Losing Transparency

I create a movie in iMovie 08, export to .dv to Quicktime Pro, embed .png logos/watermarks @ desired places within the video and set transparency to either "straight alpha" or "straight alpha blend." Everything looks great when I save the video (the default is .mov).
Anyhow, to merge the video tracks, I again export to .dv (as I was previously instructed), only when I playback that new .dv file, the transparency effects are gone and backgrounds reappear. Don't remember this happening before.
Should I be selecting "deinterlace," "high quality" or "single field" for the .png files in the video properties box? or is there something else I'm neglecting to do along the line? SOS .. Please HELP!

I don't have iMovie and it's been along time since using it. You should be able to make a new video track above the video track that you have your video in. Place the .png in the new video track set alpha channel if need be., export. Look in your help file for iMovie or ask in the iMovie forum.

As for the .dv. DV must be throwing away the transparency setting in Quicktime when you compress to .dv.
+Selecting "deinterlace," "single field" or "high quality" wouldn't make a difference, correct?+ CORRECT.

  • Exporting Indd file and losing transparency

    When I export an indd file to pdf, the transparency of the png image in the file is lost. Any idea what's causing this?

    Why are you using a PNG?!!!!!!!
    I mean you should use a different file type. PNG is terrible when you want to print the file. Use PDF or PSD instead.
    Except for apps I would recommend not to use PNG in any case in InDesign.

  • Can I easily change the colour of one CMYK channel?

    Hi. I'm still working in Photoshop CS6.
    I'm working on packaging that requires two blacks to print on the pack, so I'm trying to just quickly change the Black channel in the photoshop file to a Pantone Black. Now it's easy to duplicate the black layer and rename it as a spot black and then just delete the normal black layer. The problem I'm having though, is that the image has a transparent background with different levels of transparency, and as soon as I delete the original process black channel it completely flattens the image so I lost all transparency. Does anyone know if there's an easy way to replace the channel without losing transparency, or if there is any way to store the transparency of the image so I can delete it out of the background again after I've replaced the black channel? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi, sorry. I did say layer where I meant channel. I'm just trying to replace the black channel in the CMYK with a spot colour. But that changes the transparent .psd into a multichannel file, which then flattens the image onto a white background and loses all transparency. All I want to know is if there is a way to create a multichannel image with transparency in photoshop. Unfortunately I can't post the image yet, as the packaging upgrade is not in market yet. I've found a workaround for now, but once the product is in market I'll upload some screenshots to see if there is a way we can figure it out, or I'll create a different image some time when I have a chance.

  • Tranparency Problem of SWF Foreground over 3D

    I've been having some issues with Reader XI degrading the content of my 3D PDF files.  One particularly frustrating issues is SWFs losing transparency and becoming opaque in Reader XI.  I've embedded a SWF with transparency into my 3D annotation and set it to "Foreground".  However, in Reader XI, all the transparent content on the SWF becomes opaque.  I am currently using Adobe Acrobat X to do the editing and publishing and every thing performs and looks fine when viewed from that version.  I didn't have problems in Reader X either.  Is this an inherent issue with Reader XI?  Is there a work around?

    Thank you.  Your demo PDF would load on my workstation but the SWF content is not displayed.  I changed the settings in "Trust Manager" to always allow connection to "fpdownload.adobe.com".  I don't get a pop-up dialog this time but the SWF doesn't display.  Again, my workstation is on a closed network with no access to the internet so maybe this is the problem.  It's weird but I didn't notice this bug with my originial SWF files but now when I create some simple ones from scratch, I get the connection issues.
    The coupling of Flash and 3D has such potential in enhancing the interactivity of 3D data.  I just wish there weren't all these new bugs to contend with.  It worked so elegantly in the past.  This seems like just another of Adobe's big step toward laying Flash to rest...

  • Removing background shadow on transparent PNG image without losing shading on the object?

    I have a pillow bevel applied to a paint splatter brush image, and I'm having trouble with the shadows. I want to save this splatter as a transparent PNG. The problem is that a drop shadow effect is showing up when I save it this way. I think it's a "shading" setting rather than a true drop shadow, as there is no drop shadow set in the layer styles. The shadow does not appear when a white background is applied. It only shows when the background is transparent. I've tried reducing the shading opacity in the bevel dialogue, and this does get rid of the drop shadow....the problem is that it also removes the shading from the paint splatter, making the image look flat instead of raised. Can anyone help?  Thanks!

    Good point Curt. First time poster, so I wasn't sure how to include images in my original post. Here they are:
    Above is the image saved WITH transparency. Obviously the shadows all around the blue make this unusable.
    Here is the exact same image...the only difference is that I saved it with a white background layer behind it in photoshop. As you can see, the shadow artifacts are gone, yet the splatter still maintains its correct shading to keep the raised effect.
    Both of these images are saved as png. Any suggestions?

    No matter what we [inc Oracle support] put in here, somewhere it gets removed before it hits Sql Server

    When connecting to SQL Server instances, you can define a SQL Server alias using the MS Client Configuration Tool or you can use two back slashes:
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO="SQLSERVER\\instance2.Northwind"
    or using the SERVER and DATABASE naming convention:
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO="SERVER=<SERVER NAME>\\<INSTANCE NAME>;DATABASE=<DATABASE>"

  • In LabVIEW6i, is there a way to make particular elements of an array invisible while the others stay visible (without losing any element's info.)?

    I have an array of clusters. Each cluster pertains to a certain oscilloscope I am controlling. There is another control which specifies which oscilloscopes I have "on".
    If a particular oscilloscope is "on" I want its cluster to be VISIBLE in the array. If a particular oscilloscope is "off" I want its cluster to be INVISIBLE in the array.
    How can I implement this in my program without losing ANY of the info. in my array?

    I suggest to use two arrays; one for user interface holding the ON clusters,
    and one for internal use holding all clusters. The diagram periodically
    updates the internal array with user interface array data.
    By INVISIBLE do you mean "skipped from the array" or displayed as an empty
    placeholder? To hide an OFF cluster you could put in the cluster a flat
    button boolean that is small and transparent when ON and large enough to
    cover the whole cluster area (and other controls) when OFF.

  • Illustrator creates a transparent PDF - but I don't want it to ...

    I am running CS4 on Mac. When I save an Illustrator file to a PDF and then place the file in a Powerpoint presentation the image background is transparent (it does not appear to be transparent in Illustrator). If I save the same file as a PNG file, it is transparent, but I can turn it off the transparency before I complete the save.
    I assume I have changed some preference along the way or ticked a setting that I did not mean to.
    Any thoughts on how to create a PDF from Illustrator that is NOT transparent?
    Thanks for any comments.

    Any thoughts on how to create a PDF from Illustrator that is NOT transparent?
    PDF transparency is defined by the PDF language level. If it's not critical, you can always go back to an older version that does not support this at the cost of possibly losing some otehr features. Otherwise do what Monika said and simply add a fill rectangle...

  • Problems with flash transparent drop down menu over html in some browsers

    Hi everyone... this is my first post and it's about an issue
    that's causing me a few problems.
    I'm currently designing/ building my company's web site, the
    test page be viewed here: www.musflashtv.com/test.htm
    1) This layout contains an embeded flash movie (.swf) with a
    transparent background, this is the main navigation.
    The flash navigation has a drop down menu that animates down
    and covers the html page (containing links) below.
    The problem is that in most current browsers such as; Firefox
    2.0.05 (links below template don't work), Netscape 8.1.3
    (navigation drop down and links don't work) and Opera 9.10 (links
    below template don't work), any links just below the 'invisible'
    transparent area coverd by the navigation can't be clicked 'through
    the flash file'. The exception is IE 7.0, everything is fine there.
    (it hasn't been tested in any mac browsers though).
    Because the area below the navigation on
    www.kitachi.info/work is one large dummy jpeg file, the link below
    would be a much better example to look at.
    http://www.musflashtv.com/shows/ind...tlight-Sessions
    The flash navigation is embedded in the html (tlp) template
    file using the code below and aligned using an external style
    (.css) sheet, this html code not only embeds the flash movie but it
    also tells the browser to display it's background and as
    transparent. The flash movie is embedded in a layer that sits above
    the table.
    3) The flash embed code:
    <object
    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="
    http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0"
    name="shows-navigation-tranparent" width="851" height="300"
    align="top" class="flash-navigation"
    id="shows-navigation-tranparent">
    <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
    <param name="movie"
    value="flash/navigation-tranparent.swf" />
    <param name="quality" value="high" />
    <param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
    <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" />
    <param name="SCALE" value="exactfit" />
    <embed src="flash/navigation-tranparent.swf" width="851"
    height="300" align="top" quality="high" wmode="transparent"
    bgcolor="#000000" name="navigation-tranparent"
    allowscriptaccess="sameDomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"
    pluginspage="
    http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"
    scale="exactfit" />
    </object>
    Does anybody know of any code that can solve this problem or
    know a different way of creating a flash navigation with a drop
    menu that can be embeded over html?
    Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated especially as
    this issue is holding back progress in a big way.
    Thanks in advance guys!

  • Exporting a PDF from keynote without losing hyperlinks

    exporting a PDF from keynote without losing hyperlinks
    anyone have any ideas why it doesn't export the hyperlinks to the PDF?
    i only have PDF reader on my machine, not the full PDF creator

    Or, better than that, export the PDF from InDesign as PDF/X-4!
    By default, Acrobat and Reader use overprint preview when displaying PDF/X-4 files. Plus you have the benefit of full color management and not having transparency ruined by premature flattening.
    One other note. Other than for the fairly common practice of overprinting black text over colors to avoid halo effects due to registration, one should be exceptionally careful in using overprint. Trapping, the other good, justifiable use for overprint is really best performed by the RIP. Most modern RIPs provide for automatic trapping. Overprint should absolutely not be used as a “poor man's transparency,” especially in conjuction with spot colors. With the advent of real transparency in the Adobe imaging model and hence in Illustrator, InDesign, and PDF, there is no good reason to use overprint hacks anymore to simulate transparency.

  • Photo Files Losing Color when placing in INDD...

    Hi, using INDD CS6,I am noticing my jpg files are losing some of their color information when I link them into INDD, I am doing a photo book, and the colors really need to be preserved. It's almost like they are being compressed a little in INDD similar to what we see on compressed PDF output.  I have check my color spaces, etc, all seem to be good and consistent between the apps. I am attaching a screen shot where I overlaid the same jpg displayed in preview next to the same file linked to in INDD.
    Thank you.

    A few things at play here, I think.  First, do you see the the little red dot with the question mark in the upper left of the frame in ID? That means the link is missing. ID can't do a proper preview if it can't find the link.  Second, ID is color managed. As far as I know, Preview is not. A more accurate check would be against the image in Photoshop.  Third, you've got a drop shadow. I suspect the Image is RGB and the transparency blend space is set to CMYK.  Fourth, you are, indeed, looking at a compressed preview, not the actual pixels. The quality of the preview depends on the settings (display quality) and the size/resolution ratio at which the image was saved.

  • Save to GIF without losing quality

    Hi im trying to save this small animation to GIF but the problem is the colours keep messing up, and i lose alot of quality.
    is there a way i can do it without losing the quality?

    Depending on how the animation will be used and whether you need transparency, you might have much better luck Importing your images into a Non-Linear Editor (NLE), like Premiere, or Premiere Elements. If you bring them in as numbered stills, you can set their Duration (before you Import) and even add Transitions. From there, you can Export to any hundered, or so, output formats. Depending on how you set up your Project, you can end up with great color and clarity.
    I know that you have, and are using PS, but Premiere Elements is a very inexpensive program, that will handle still animation very well.
    If you do elect to go that route, you might want to post a description of your animation and your intended use, in the Premiere Elements forum, so people can give you all of the specs and tips on how to achieve what you want. The results will make an animated GIF look like a child's finger-painting.
    Otherwise, what John and Ed said.

  • Opening Fireworks PNG-8s with alpha transparancy

    Hi all,
    I have to do some work on some files I didn't create -- a couple hundred png files. They are 8-bit, indexed files, but when viewed on the web they have 256 levels of alpha transparency. When opened in Photoshop, they have only one level of alpha transparency :(
    Turns out these are in some proprietary Fireworks format ... anyone have any ideas how I can get these into Photoshop without losing my alpha channel, hopefully without having to BUY Fireworks ... oh how I miss ImageReady ;)
    Thanks in advance.

    Photoshop doesn't work with continuous transparency in indexed color mode, only one transparent value is allowed. (ImageReady wouldn't do it, either)
    You may need to use another application to convert them to a normal RGB image with transparency.

  • How do I paste transparent png's

    If I copy a transparent PNG image from any web browser on a mac, I can paste said image into illustrator without it losing its transparency, while trying the same on my PC results in the transparent areas of the image turning black... How does one avoid this?
    (running illustrator CC 2014)

    Are forum users usually this bitter? I really don't understand how using this workflow would be stupid, as you so eloquently put it. You don't know what I'm working on nor how, and it does surprise me that you don't see how it could be time saving... But I don't really mean to discuss process quality or speeds.
    Anyone else? If I can do it on a mac, I should be able to do it on a pc as well!

  • PNG Transparency Lost on PDF Print

    I have been googling and experimenting like a maniac for the last five hours and I am close to giving up. Please help me.
    What I want to do: I want to be able to open a PDF form I created in LiveCycle Designer with Adobe Reader and print it without all the PNG's losing their transparency. I conducted an experiment to pinpoint the problem:
    I started with these pictures.
    background.jpg - a run-of-the-mill colour image
    logo.png - a PNG-24 image with transparency saved using "Save for Web" in PS
    Using MS Word, I create a blank document, insert background.jpg and then logo.png on top of it. The background is visible through the transparent portions of the PNG.
    Using LC Designer, I create a blank document, insert background.jpg and then logo.png on top of it. The background is visible through the transparent portions of the PNG.
    I save the MS Word document as a PDF, using default settings (not that I can identify any settings that ought to affect the issue at hand), as word-doc.pdf
    I save the LC Designer document as a PDF, using default settings (not that I can identify any settings that ought to affect the issue at hand), as lc-doc.pdf
    I open word-doc.pdf in Adobe Reader XI and am satisfied to see that the transparency works as intended.
    I open lc-doc.pdf in Adobe Reader XI and am satisfied to see that the transparency works as intended.
    Since the ultimate outcome of my project is a form where the user should be able to save their changes by printing to PDF, I do the following.
    I save a copy of word-doc.pdf  by printing to Adobe PDF, and name the new file word-printed.pdf
    I save a copy of LC-doc.pdf  by printing to Adobe PDF, and name the new file LC-printed.pdf
    I open word-printed.pdf in Adobe Reader XI and am satisfied to see that the transparency works as intended.
    I open lc-printed.pdf in Adobe Reader XI and am HORRIFIED to see that the transparency DOES NOT WORK as intended.
    I try the same thing with printing to a physical printer instead of to a PDF file - same results.
    I try the same thing using all different PDF version (1.X) - same results.
    I try the same thing using a GIF instead of a PNG - same results.
    ...and so on.
    PLEASE HELP!!!

    You have a bigger problem than you realise. That Adobe PDF driver comes with Acrobat. Not with Windows, and not with Adobe Reader. That's why you have it. Your end users with Adobe Reader will not have it unless they also buy Acrobat (which is of course Adobe's preferred outcome and the reason for all limitations in Reader).
    In terms of graphics issues, it's probably because you are using a LiveCycle Designer (XFA) form. These are not really PDF and don't use PDF quality graphics. They are just a thin PDF wrapper round a simple XML forms architecture. If you want graphics quality, use an acroform.
    In terms of flattening, the popular way seems to be JavaScript, but there may be significant limitations on use in Reader. (The JavaScript API document gives information in Reader compatibility for each method).
