Lost My Main Internal Drive in Device List

I somehow unmounted my main internal hard drive and as a result I do not see it in my device list. So i do not have access to the root of my drive. As a new Mac user I do not know if I am explaining this correctly. But any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok - got in touch with SmithMicro and learned this is actually a known issue in Mac OS X and that Apple is working on it. The fix, from Apple's site, involves first downloading the Developer xcode tools over here:
http://developer.apple.com/technology/xcode.html
Its a pretty big download, about a gig, but once installed do this:
Fire up Terminal and type: (make sure to include spaces)
/Developer/Tools/SetFile -a v / and press return
You may see an error (-5000). If so, it means you need administrator access to the root. Type this:
sudo /Develper/Tools/SetFile -a v / It will ask for your password. Type it in, however be careful as it will not appear in terminal at all - just type it, then press return. Presto! Icons are back. It resets a visibility flag.
Might want to then exit and restart. Icon should appear on both desktop and finder toolbar.
Hopefully we'll see an update from Apple that address's this against future installs. Apparently there are a number of apps that when installed can cause this, so it's not poser's fault entirely.
Hope this has helped anyone with this problem! -Robert

What does it mean when a lost iPhone stops showing up in device list on find iPhone app?

    That means:
    The battery is dead
The phone has been turned off
The phone is no longer connected to the cellular network or a WiFi network
The Find my iPhone service has been turned off
    The phone has been wiped.
The bottom line is, it means you're probably never going to be able to locate it unless you can physically find it.

  • S.M.A.R.T. failed on main internal drive, is my disk dying?

    Hi,
Wanted to repair permissions before updating to 10.6.8 only to find a red message saying my main internal disk is damaged beyond repair, s.m.a.r.t checkup has failed.
I was able to repair damages on the HD with disk utility but not the media drive.
My iMac works fine, no slow-ups, no bugs, no freezes, nothing, only the message saying my disk is damaged.
I have an iMac i7 2.8 GHz (late 2009) with 1To media drive with a HD with 99,86 Go running 10.6.8. (I was able to update), 4 Go 1067 mHz DDR3 Ram.
I consider my iMac like new, still have 629 Go available disk space.
Should I ignore this message since every thing seems in working order or I am looking for trouble?
    Thank's

I would say to replace the HD. You can run additional tests in Apple Hardware Test to verify and also download and SMART Utility at:
    http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
BTW If the machine is covered by AppleCare then this will certainly be covered.
Of course make sure the system has at least one viable backup using either Time Machine or a bootable clone using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner or preferable both TM & the clone.

  • Main internal drive gone: won't mount

    Hello, everybody:
My primary internal drive has…gone away. This morning, after the screen had slept (the computer is set never to sleep) the machine wouldn't respond--obviously frozen. No key sequences would jar it loose, so I shut it down with the power switch on the cpu. On reboot, it booted from the second, or original, drive, which I had abandoned a few years ago after it had begun to fail, but which I had left in its bay when I installed the replacement (which is now my primary). Now, that failing one is the only internal drive it sees. I then booted from an external firewire drive--my backup--but even now, while running from that drive, neither disk utility nor the "diskutil list" command line shows any trace of my primary internal drive. It doesn't even show up when I run System Profiler from the "About this Mac" Apple-menu item. Before I remove and reconnect the vanished drive in a hopeful attempt to correct what might be merely a loose connection, can anyone steer me toward a probable cause of this problem?
    My best to you,
    James.

Well, I disconnected and reconnected the drive, and still zero. Nothing seems to see it. I'm downloading DataRescue II right now, but tonight I think I'll be shopping for drives. This is the second Maxtor drive that's gone south in less than four years, and this one lasted for only two years and change. You have a favorite drive or brand that you've found fast and reliable?

  • 2 Internal Drives 2 External Drives

I have two internal drives that I would like to backup to two external drives. I love Time Machine and have been using it to backup my primary (startup) internal drive to one of the externals. Now I'd like to backup the other internal to the other external drive, but I don't see a way to do this with Time Machine. Really don't want to go back to using Retrospect. Any ideas?
    To clarify:
Drive A, my main internal drive, backs up to Drive B, an external drive, via Time Machine. I want to use Time Machine to backup Drive C, my secondary internal drive, to Drive D, another external drive.

i have been looking for same answers, but i think depending on your usage you CAN do what you need, only you need to look at it with less user control - i.e. specifically being able to back up ONLY A to B and ONLY C to D.
what you can do though is, You can 'join' drive B and D as concatenated under disk utils. so for example if A, B, C, D, are all 250Gb drives, you join B&D to become a single 500Gb concatenated disk set called "BD", and set time machine to use "BD" as it's disk. then select both drives A & C (your two internal drives) to be 'backed up' using time machine.
assuming all goes well, you'll rarely need to call on time machine anyway. If A or C have a problem, you will be able to source the files from the externals using time machine as normal and if neccessary, replace A or C and get back up and running from "BD".
and if B or D fail at any point, they were only the 'back-up' anyway. and same issue is there for all TM users.
so all would be as apple intended, with the possible exception of size / storage / usage issues, IF your external drives are same size or smaller than the internals. Apple suggest 2.5x the storage for TM back-ups, but i think that assumes heavy disk usage, large files and never invoking any (too long ago to back up) problems using TM. but even same size drives offers at least daily back ups and even more assuming you don't run your internal drives at more than 75% capacity?
you could even take a Clone of your Boot drive using something such as CCC or Super Duper once a month or whatever suits (using a separate or smaller/cheaper external) then exclude a whole bunch of big files that don't change often (such as applications folder) from taking up space on "BD" / time machine.
anyway, i think i've talked myself into it, and i'm off to fettle with my huge array of currently wasted disk space!
p.s. if anyone running into this thread knows what happens if Concatenated disks fail. i.e. "can you extract data from one disk if the other dies?" might be handy to know...

when i say 'daily' i mean, if TM is set to back up daily, you may use you entire TM space each day, and only every be abel to go 'back in time' by one day. it's a recent and reliable back up none the less.

  • Cannot write to other internal drive after OS reinstall

I replaced my main internal drive and reinstalled Snow Leopard. Now when I try to create a folder on the other internal drive I can only create one on the root of the other non primary drives If I try to create a folder on the non root folder the new folder option is gone or if I try to create with a program it will not allow me
Looking at the permissions it shows Admin with Read/write and the others with Read only. I am signed on as admin but still cannot create a folder
    Suggestions ?

I'd check to see what the ACLs are (in terminal):
Type "ls -le " then drag the folder into terminal window.
Also, you can check flags that may be set.
Type: "ls -lO " then drag the folder into terminal.

  • TS1538 What do I do after step 6 in "If the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is not listed"?

i'm very confused about step 5, "Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed" > "If the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is not listed", what do I do after step 6? I looked for and found the entry that recognizes the device as a camera, "Apple iPhone, now what? I'm trying to resolve an issue. After an iTunes upgrade in July 2012, I have not been able to get my iTunes to recognize any of my devices. I have uninstalled/reinstalled iTunes, all the steps. Now I'm on this one and I don't know what to do after this step 6. I looked and found the entry.... now what??? I am out of room on my phone because everything I buy on iTunes on the computer mysteriously appears on my iPhone 4, and everything I buy on my iPhone mysteriously uploads onto my iTunes the next time I open it. My phone will charge when connected to the computer, and Windows recognizes it and asks how I want to open pictures, etc. But in iTunes it will not show up under Devices. This is getting beyond ridiculous and I have to get some of this music off of my phone!

Found a possible solution for me.
While the phone was plugged into my computer and iTunes is CLOSED.
    1. I went to Services in Windows.
    2. I selected Apple Mobile Device and right clicked and selected "Stop".
    3. Then I right-clicked again and selected "Start".
    4. Then I went to Device Manager and right clicked my iPhone with the yellow alert icon and selected "Uninstall".  You will get a warning about uninstalling the device.  Click OK.
    5.  At the top of Device Manager I clicked the Action menu and selected "Scan for Hardware Changes".
This re-installed the iPhone and everything started working again.

  • After updating to iTunes 12  the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is not listed, I use Windows 8.1, how can i solve this?

After I updates ITunes to the latest version (12), ITunes wont find my iphone and Ipad anymore, after searching I found that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is not listed anymore, on the support website of Apple it doesnt explain how to solve this,.
I use Windows 8.1 and so now also ITunes 12, both my Iphone 4S and Ipad Air have the latest IOS version.
I hope anybody can tell me how to solve this that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is back, thank you

  • External Hard Drive not showing in Device List

I'm having a problem with an external HDD on my Macbook Air under Mavericks
My External drive is divided into four partitions - the problem is that one of them is refusing to show in the Sidebar "Device" list in Finder
The missing partition is showing in Disk Utility, Terminal and when clicking on the Machine Name under Finder (top level)
Disk Utility reports the disk as being OK.  SuperDuper can see the disk as a target.
    Any suggestions?

Matrox drive.  Was fine under 10.8
Formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and is mounted as a drive under Finder Machine name and Disk Utility.
The one thing that I see under Disk Utility that differs to the other partitions is that Owners Enabled is set to Yes

  • My internal "A" drive is not listed as an import destination

    I have 7 internal drives/partitions labledl a, c, f, i,k,, L and n
In LR 2 I had no issues importing directly to the A drive. For some reason, LR 3 does not list my "A" drive is as an import destination. It allows me to hit the + sign and
"add" a new folder. But I am actually just clicking through the folders until I get to the folder on the A drive that I need.  After import that destination is still not reflected in the choices.
I can change the drive letter but before I go through that effort (it affects other programs too) I wanted to see if anyone had a work around.
I am guessing this is a bug. LR may not look for drive starting with a or b since they precede the typical system drive letter of C. Not sure why but I am just guessing here.
    Anyone?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I lost my iPad and now it's not showing up on the Find my iPhone App devices list.  I just have my iPhone and my iPad on it.  I know that the app is enabled on my iPad b/c I have tested it from my iPad in the past.  Any ideas why it's not showing up on the devices list?  And how can I get it back on my device list so I can find it?

Is the app compatible with the iOS on the phone? Do you have automatic downloads enabled on the phone?
