Lots of problems in changeover from OSX to OS9

Hi,
I have a G4 bought in 2001. It operates fine in OS9, but I recently got broadband, which isn’t compatible with OS9. Therefore I had to start using OSX and I have had nothing but problems since. Here is the list of problems:
1. Internet Explorer regularly freezes or quits. I have tried to download both Safari and Firefox but my computer won’t open or install a ‘.dmg’ file. When I click on ‘get helper application’, a window opens to show my Internet Plug Ins folder, which is empty.
2. If I shut down OSX, then start up again, the computer appears to boot up correctly. However, if I shut down from OSX and restart in OS9, I get the message ‘your computer did not shut down properly’.
3. If I am in OS9 and select OSX as the start-up disk and click ‘Restart’, the computer shuts down instead of restarting. If I then push the start up button on the front of the tower, the computer begins to start up but then shuts down after about 30 secs.
4. If I am in OSX and it freezes and I am forced to start it up with the button on the front of the tower, I do not get the message ‘your computer did not shut down properly. Disk First Aid will repair'.
5. In OSX, Microsoft Word often freezes and I cannot exit the programme so I have to restart the computer forcibly.
6. I cannot print from OSX, only from OS9.
7. In OSX, in Outlook, if I attach a document from the Classic Environment to an e-mail, the recipient cannot open the attachment. I can move the document to the OSX desktop, but then I can’t print it without putting it back in the Classic Environment and going back to OS9 to print.
8. In OSX, the CD drive won’t close when I press the ‘close’ button. It does however close in OS9.
I would welcome urgent advice on how to handle these problems.
Many thanks, Suzie.
G4   Mac OS 9.2.x

Hi,
I have a G4 bought in 2001. It operates fine in OS9,
but I recently got broadband, which isn’t compatible
with OS9.
What kind of 'broadband'? Broadband should be compatible with OS 9. I know I used it when I had OS 9. What problems were you having.
Therefore I had to start using OSX
Which version of OS X? If you're using the version which shipped with your G4, that might be 10.0.x... which is Not Ready For Prime Time. In fact, 10.0.x is little more than a joke and is unusable. 10.1.x was at least usable, if slow; 10.2.x was a nice system. 10.3.x was much better, and 10.4.x better still.
I hope you have enough RAM. Running 10.1.x with less than 256 MB is not going to be enjoyable; ramp that up to at least 512 before trying 10.4.x.
and I
have had nothing but problems since. Here is the
list of problems:
1. Internet Explorer regularly freezes or quits.
MSIE on OS X isn't very good. Get Firefox, or, if you have the right version of OS X, Safari.
I
have tried to download both Safari and Firefox but my
computer won’t open or install a ‘.dmg’ file.
Save the file to disk, open it with DIsk Utility.
When I
click on ‘get helper application’, a window opens to
show my Internet Plug Ins folder, which is empty.
I suspect that you're using 10.0.x and are finding out why that version is NRFPT.
2. If I shut down OSX, then start up again, the
computer appears to boot up correctly. However, if I
shut down from OSX and restart in OS9, I get the
message ‘your computer did not shut down properly’.
I suspect you had Classic open, under 10.0.x, and didn't close it before shutting OS X down. This was not a good idea in 10.0.x.
3. If I am in OS9 and select OSX as the start-up
disk and click ‘Restart’, the computer shuts down
instead of restarting. If I then push the start up
button on the front of the tower, the computer begins
to start up but then shuts down after about 30 secs.
I'm not sure what that is, but I suspect 10.0.x is misbehaving.
4. If I am in OSX and it freezes and I am forced to
start it up with the button on the front of the
tower, I do not get the message ‘your computer did
not shut down properly. Disk First Aid will repair'.
You've got directory errors. Run Disk Utility or buy Disk Warrior and run that.
5. In OSX, Microsoft Word often freezes and I cannot
exit the programme so I have to restart the computer
forcibly.
Which version of Word? I suspect that you're using either 98 or 2001 under Classic. If that's the case, and you're running 10.0.x, it's not Word that's the problem, it's Classic, and the fix is to get a newer version of OS X.
6. I cannot print from OSX, only from OS9.
Which printer are you trying to use? And do you have the Printer Center set up?
7. In OSX, in Outlook, if I attach a document from
the Classic Environment to an e-mail, the recipient
cannot open the attachment. I can move the document
to the OSX desktop, but then I can’t print it without
putting it back in the Classic Environment and going
back to OS9 to print.
This wasn't clear. You should be able to have a doc open from OS X or Classic, no problem. And if you can print in OS 9, you should be able to print in Classic.
8. In OSX, the CD drive won’t close when I press the
‘close’ button. It does however close in OS9.
It shouldn't do that.
I would welcome urgent advice on how to handle these
problems.
Many thanks, Suzie.

  • Problems importing Mails from OSX 10.3.9

    Hi there,
today I updated to Mac OSX 10.4 from 10.3
When starting Mail under 10.4 for the first time it imported the mails from the previous Mail-Version (10.3).
Unfortunately nearly all the mails that where in the Inbox of the old Mail Version are gone and the few Mails which were imported can not be displayed. And I only a text is displayed that says that I should connect this account to the internet. But this account is already connected!
Is the inbox from the older Version of Mail somwhere stored on the harddisk, so that I can try to import the inbox again? Or is the inbox overwritten with that of the new Version of Mail?
    Any hints?
    Best regards,
    Frank
    PowerMac G5 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Frank.
The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problem. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Take a look at the following article (also referenced in the thread I mentioned at the beginning of this post) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • External Hard Disc problems after upgrade from OSX 10.4 to 10.6

I have a La Cie external hardisk which I connect to my MacBook Pro with a firewire cable. It is formatted with UFS/Unix filesystem and was very fussy about being unplugged without being ejected under 10.4. If it was accidently unplugged with 10.4 it would take about 10 minutes to mount the next time it was plugged in, while it was checked, but would work fine.
Now with 10.6.1 the permissions show me having only read access (so I decided to make a copy of the disk and reformat it). Unfortunately when the disk is plugged in, it immediately shows in the finder, but is behaving strangely - it only shows some of the files in the filesystem and ceases to function at all after a few minutes. If I try to verify the disk using Disk Utility I get an error message saying that it is unable to unmount. I've also tried DiskWarrior, but it says the filesystem is unsupported.
Any ideas would be gratefully received...
    Thanks!
    Chris

this very much sounds like a failing/failed hard drive. you can try reformatting it wile booted from the snow leopard install dvd using disk utility there. if that does not work (I suspect it won't) I would get rid of it altogether.

  • Downgrade from OSX to OS9?

I currently have OSX 10.4.5 on my Powermac BW, but I'm trying to do a boot install of OS 9, I have both os 9.1, and OS 9.2.1, I do not have the restore disc, and I have tried holding C, which does nothing, as well as zapping pram, which causes OSX to fail to boot, I'd either like to install classic, or wipe the hard drive and just run OS9. Thanks in advance!
    PowerMac BW G3   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

It sounds like a couple of things possibly.
A non-bootable DVD drive (unlikely as you got Tiger installed).
An OEM version of OS 9 rather than retail/universal.
You don't have a partition that doesn't have OS X?
How about a 2nd drive? Always good to have a backup drive; and, with B&W where booting external is only possible with SCSI. A PCI drive controller for 2nd drive (and better performance as well as large drive support) in either ATA or SATA interface.
My system will always find OS X if I let it (I don't even have OS 9 drivers).
Sounds like you need to shop for another drive. Why wipe Tiger? and that way you can have backup, OS 9 partition.

  • Why would upgrade from OSX 10.5.8 to 10.6.3 create browser problem?

Please help! Since upgrading my MacBook from OSX 10.5.8 to 10.6.3 I cannot access one of my online accounts anymore, neither on Safari (now 5.1.10) nor on Firefox (26.0). It worked fine before.
To access this account and as a second login step, the website requires that you select the 6 digits of your password/number from a login panel whose numbers 0 to 9 are located in different squares everytime you try and log on. The first login step that requires typing a continuous number into a field works fine, but it's this next step that's refused.
Could something (e.g. a new security or network setting) be blocking this digit-by-digit identification process?
I'd appreciate any suggestions what I could go through and check.
P.S. I just upgraded again to 10.6.8 hoping this might fix the problem, but to no avail.

    bzmedia,
Make sure your software is up to date (run software update) also see if Firefox needs to be updated.
You may have to call the Main office, they must have an IT person to help customers. (I had an issue with one of my banks sites, and I had to call the Main office and they had me switch something)
By preferences I was refereing to Safari making sure that block cookies was not checked,(Safari preferences/Privacy, also check security tab and make sure that Java script is enabled) also see if your firewall may be causing the issue (system preferences/Security,firewall tab)
Seeing that it is both browsers, has me scratching my head.
I did find something similar to your issue, it may or may not be the problem, but check them anyway.
    Try going to applications/Utililies/Keychain Access.
    Close all windows.
Keychain Access ->  click on System Roots on the left, and then click on Certifcates on the bottom left.
Check to see if any of the certificates on the right have the blue "triangle" symbol - this means they have custom trust settings.
You may have to go thru all the certificates, so you'll have to change them via the method below.  Changing them just by changing the access to "system defaults" doesn't seem to save.  The method below worked for me.
Double-click on each certificate with the custom setting (blue "triangle"), expand the section labled "trust".  Change the "Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)if that is set" setting to "no value specified".  Close window - you should be prompted for the password.  Double-click on the certificate again, expand trust, change the "When using this certificate" setting to "Use System Defaults".  Close window, and re-enter password.
If you didn't re-enter your password upon closing the window, the setting didn't take.  The blue "triangle" should disappear after a few seconds when it's set back to default.  Once all of the certificates are changed back to default, restart Safari.
Also there must be someone from the bank that can help with this matter, although most likely not at a branch. Did it work when you were at the bank?
Maybe seventyone will have the answer you need, I know he has been trying to get a post to you, but the system is messing him up.
Hope this helps,as I can't seem to think of anything else at this time, although I will keep looking around.
    All the best

  • Moving from WSUS to SCCM12, users experiencing a lot of problems

    I just have to ask:
Is Microsoft Security Software Updates from Windows Update installed the EXACT same way when it comes from SCCM12 compared to downloaded from WSUS servers?
In my experience, it does not seem so. I have now ran this for 2 months and we have
experienced a LOT of problems. The problems are: Office updates seem to stop Microsoft Outlook from contacting server, and Software Center shows that the computer is waiting for a restart or updates seemingly to be stuck on 0% and other
    problems.
This solution was set up in cooperation with an experienced CM-consultant from Microsoft.
I have never ever seen that Microsoft updates break Outlook, even SP1-upgrades when they come from the Windows update service. I wonder if updates are installed differently when using CM12?

With ConfigMgr, WSUS is only responsible for providing the update catalog (and EULAs) to the managed systems. Actual updates (the binaries) are delivered using the ConfigMgr infrastructure.
As explicitly stated by Torsten above, the Windows Update Agent (WUA) on managed systems performs the update applicability scan against the update catalog and installs the updates that ConfigMgr delivers to the managed system. Also note that the binaries
that ConfigMgr delivers are downloaded from the exact same place that WSUS would download them so these are the same also just delivered using a slightly different mechanism. Thus, from the managed system's perspective, there is no difference whatsoever except
    in when the process happens.
The GPO you speak of isn't pointing the WUA to your ConfigMgr server, it's pointing it to the WSUS instance controlled by the SUP role in ConfigMgr. In its default state/configuration, the ConfigMgr agent sets a local group policy for this. Using a domain
group policy would simply overwrite this but it is still controlling where the WUA points to get the update catalog regardless of which policy is enforced.
Thus, once again, it's the same thing as far as the managed system is concerned.

  • Trying to go from iDVD 08 back to iDVD 06. Lots of problems

    Hi,
Had iDVD '06 installed and loved it. It worked great. Installed iDVD '08 because of the professional quality feature and had lots of problems. Decided to reinstall iDVD 06. I Removed as much of iDVD 08 as I could find from the hard drive. Reinstalled iDVD 06 and I cannot get it to open at all. Please help. Thanks.

Did you do a permissions repair and delete preferences after reinstalling?
To delete preferences, with iDVD closed trash the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist found in User (the house icon)/Library/Preferences. Then do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app found in HD/Applications/Utilities. In the left hand pane of the Disk Utility window select your hard drive icon and then click on repair permissions. Takes about 3 minutes to repair. Then try to launch iDVD and see if you still have the problem. iDVD will recreate the .plist file that you deleted.

Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from Sep 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install (2) tiger discs version 10.4.10.  I want to know if it is safe and what are the necessary steps to do so. Also by downgrading im wondering if a lot of apps nowadays support tiger for example I have photoshop version 5 and 4 these are very important to me. One last question does anyone know of any reliable virus protection for mac that doesnt slow down your computer? because I have read that a lot of them do so. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Here are the specs for my iMac
    Model Name:
    iMac
      Model Identifier:
    iMac7,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core 2 Duo

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.

First , I have been with Mac for many years ( 14 to be exact ) I do have some knowledge and understanding of Apple product .
At the present time I'm having lots of problems with the router so I was looking in to some info , and come across one web site regarding : port forwarding , IP addresses .
In my frustration , amongst lots of open web pages tutorials and other useless information , I come across innocent looking link and software to installed called Genieo , which suppose to help with any router .
Software ask for permission to install , and about 30 % in , my instinct was telling me , there is something not right . I stop installation . Delete everything , look for any
trace in Spotlight , Library . Nothing could be find .
Now , every time I open Safari , Firefox or Chrome , it will open in my home page , but when I start looking for something in steed of Google page , there is
''search.genieo.com'' page acting like a Google . I try again to get raid of this but I can not find solution .
With more research , again using genieo.com search eng. there is lots of articles and warnings . From that I learn do not use uninstall software , because doing this will install more things where it come from.
I do have AppleCare support but its to late to phone them , so maybe there some people with knowledge , how to get this of my computer
Any help is welcome , English is my learned language , you may notice this , so I'm not that quick with the respond

Genieo definitely doesn't help with your router. It's just adware, and has no benefit to you at all. They scammed you so that they could display their ads on your computer.
    To remove it, see:

Do not use the Genieo uninstaller!

I ended up letting my itunes match subscription go because I was having a lot of problems with it. I had updated my library by downloading a number of AAC versions from itunes and then manually deleted all of them and added the proper files back by re-ripping my CD's again. I also added a bunch of new music and because I use a rating system, re organized all my music and rated some stuff with new ratings and higher star ratings.
About 3 months passed and I decided to give match another try. After getting it, I found it odd that my database was put there in virtually no time. Not only that, a significant amount of music I deleted (but was in the old match subscription) showed up. I knew it was broken at that point, but today, I was listening to music and items which I know have been updated and changed, have also reverted back to old settings. Is there a way to fix this?
Also, I'm REALLY annoyed with match again. After all my work, I STILL have censored music as my match music. It is really annoying to have different music on my computer than what is in the cloud (not to mention the music which will not upload to the cloud and just constantly says "waiting"!!)

    Yeah, and it didn't work.
I had problems when I updated to iOS 5 (lost all my apps - a few of my friends had the same problem) and when there was an update to iOS 4 (camera wouldn't work). The iOS 5 issue was sorted by backup (but I lost the app data) but for the iOS 4 issue I had to return my iPod to get a new one.
