Lots of teething problems

had Lumia 7 days.  I've found it impossible to use "contacts transfer" from an E61 to a Lumia 800 - both of which have bluetooth - it gets half way there then gives an error message. I've now synced from E61 to old copy of PC Suite (Ovi has stopped working), but now the USB sync to Lumia 800, via Zune, hasn't worked.  Zune claims to be syncing, but the progress bar goes nowhere and the sync counter just fluctuates between 0% and 1%.   Until this works I don't have any of my phone numbers on my new phone.  It really shouldn't be this difficult!
Also on Zune I see the list of photos apparently syncing (the number left to sync goes down from 80 to 20 or so, then jumps back to 80).
I find it often impossible to place cursor in middle of word - it just highlights the whole word so I have to delete it all if I want to edit a word.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

1) After your advice I am bashing my head against ANOTHER set of tasks:
-transferring my 1600 contacts from E61 into Outlook,
-tranferring again from Outlook into csv format (Live cannot handle anything more sophisticated it seems)
-batching those into separate spreadsheets 100 at a time (because Live won't accept more)
-then, half way through, finding that ALL OF THE UK PHONE NUMBERS are now missing the zero at the beginning so are unlikely to work when...IF...I ever get them onto this new f****** phone.
2) thank you - that's helpful
3) Sorry to disagree, but:
Settings > Applications > Pictures + Camera > Quick Share Account = Skydrive.
It seems I can't edit this.
I'm sorry VoodooKing, but I started off delighted at seeing a "Contacts Transfer" option on the phone which suggests a painless, wireless pairing and everything moving seemlessly from one phone to the other.  To be sitting here at 1am after 2 evenings in a row spent trying to sort out a workaround and still no contacts on the new phone...well, let's say I'm not happy. Returning the phone and going with Google is looking increasingly attractive.

Good to know!  OS 9.1 is my favorite OS to date.  Tiger & SL running in close 2nd.
Me personally, I will not upgrade until OS 10.9.02 is released.

  • Yoga 13 - Lot's of problems and no answers from Lenovo

    Hi everyone
Just wanted to post my experiences with the Yoga 13 issues and explain the problems and what Lenovo is doing (or mostly not doing) in relation to these. I have been dealing with this for 9 weeks now already, for the first 7 weeks I remained quite calm with them about it. After that I’m afraid the situation has had to be escalated considerably. I won’t go into the full details of everything that has happened as it would take all day. Suffice to say that Lenovo have been terrible to deal with, lied continually and ignore anything they don’t want to do (much like on this forum).
I appreciate that not everyone seems to be having all of these issues. But each of them is widely reported on Lenovo’s forums here. Lenovo accept it conversations with me that these are all valid issues with the Yoga and justify it by saying that Ideapad laptops are not as good quality as Thinkpads.
Also worth stating is that my work is in an advisory role for a company that is a large Lenovo customer. This should never have been a consideration as the Yoga was a personal purchase. Unfortunately Lenovo chose to involve their sales people and teams who I deal with for work related issues. This only really meant that internal communication at Lenovo between departments was even worse than usual and it meant different departments offered different things and gave different explanations. I wanted to be treated as any other customer would be who had purchased a Yoga 13.
Wifi card, range and signal strength are terrible. It also drops connections and sometimes won’t wake from sleep. During general usage the low quality, cheap realtek wifi card proves to be very poor. It is connected via an internal USB hub which goes someway to explain why it has sleep issues. For some reason Lenovo decided to design this computer with the antennas beneath the keyboard under a layer of metal shielding. This already provides a terrible level of signal. Couple this with the two additional layers of metal on the top and bottom of the machine and turning it into tablet mode seriously reduces the wifi strength even further. This is a flawed design decision and I consider it a fault, especially considering the pricing of this computer. Due to the wireless issues the computer drops connections often and many times won’t reconnect. I set up the yoga after it’s replacement wifi card next to a Thinkpad, Macbook Pro and Sony Vaio, all of the other computers connected at more than twice the speed that the Yoga is able to even at only 6ft from the wifi access point. If Lenovo wish to charge so much for a laptop and advertise it as having ‘n speed’ wifi then it should be comparable to other similarly priced laptops. While not a fault, I also find the inclusion of only a single band 2.4ghz wifi card to be quite unacceptable considering the price of the computer, no other competing products choose to go for such low quality components in their premium priced products, it is simply not fit for purpose. Lenovo accepted the wifi as a major issue with the U310 and U410 models but of course making any kind of statement of a known problem will be costly for them, so they choose to ignore customers as it is less expensive to deal with.
I find it interesting that some users report their wifi as being perfect. I would ask anyone who claims this to connect it along with another laptop to the same network and move more than 15 ft from the router and try to copy some files across the network. Compare the two and see the difference. If you already have less than a 20Mbps internet connection and don’t use your wireless network for anything other than internet access quite close to the router then you’ll probably not have the same problem as much.
Solution: There is none. Lenovo will replace the wifi card for another one under the warranty but it won’t fix the problem and the flawed design. For a proper solution to this problem then read at the bottom of this post regarding replacement/refund options that Lenovo are offering in this situation. Fiddling with wifi settings and routers is not a solution when every other computer (including Lenovo ones) works perfectly on that network.
The touchscreen cuts out and requires a reset to start working again. During operation the touchscreen simply stops responding. A full reset is required to make it work again. The fact that a reset fixes it instantly shows to me that this isn’t a hardware fault. It is a further example of Lenovo’s flawed design and also perhaps a software issue. The touchscreen is also attached to the internal USB hub, whether this is related to the wifi problem above I am unsure. This is completely unacceptable on a touch based device and is not fit for purpose.
Solution: There is none. Lenovo will replace the touchscreen under the warranty but it won’t fix the problem and the flawed design. For a proper solution to this problem then read at the bottom of this post regarding replacement/refund options that Lenovo are offering in this situation.
The autorotate stops responding. Again as a tablet device the autorotate is an important feature. Since coming back from repair with Lenovo it has started occasionally not responding. I was told to flip the machine over, open and close and press the ‘autorotate on/off’ button a few times as a solution. This is not an acceptable solution on an expensive machine and is not fit for purpose on a tablet based machine.
Solution: Lenovo recommend pressing the button a few times and opening and closing the lid. Restarting also might help. This is not a solution.
The keyboard is extremely low quality, bounces and is uncomfortable to use over an extended period. Lenovo have always been well known for producing great quality keyboards. However the cheap one they decided to put on the Yoga is really not fit for purpose. It is a simple panel keyboard that is secured in place using double sided sticky tape. Seriously, a taped down keyboard on a premium priced computer! It started to come up in one corner and pivots around several of the keys in the upper right corner. I added more double sided sticky tape under it to better secure it (as recommended on Lenovo’s customer support forums), this worked for a short while to hold it down better. The keyboard was replaced by lenovo as part of the repairs. It is still bouncy though, low quality and uncomfortable to type on for extended periods.
Solution: Lenovo will replace the keyboard under warranty. But the new one is still stuck down with double sided sticky tape.
The touchpad sticks and occasionally stops working. As the touchpad is the same as others used in competing products I can only assume this is a driver related issue. However, as the Yoga has been released for 6 months now it should have been addressed with a driver update by now. Lenovo don’t seem to care about this. They will replace it under warranty, but it won’t fix anything.
Solution: Lenovo will replace the touchpad under warranty. The new one will still be the same.
The paint peels off the corners of the device’s metal top and bottom. Due to the soft touch paint finish applied to the metal top and bottom of the machine then it rubs of in high usage areas such as the hinge and the corners. The aesthetics of a premium priced computer are actually important and it should not happen. This appears to be a flaw in the design of the machine again and makes it unfit for purpose.
Solution: Lenovo will try to tell you that it is not covered by the warranty and that you did it yourself. After a lot of pushing they will replace both the top and bottom panels under the warranty.
Lenovo, particularly their service centre team, are very unresponsive to questions about these issues. They will claim on first ask that they have no knowledge of any of these issues. Then they will try to blame the user and how they use the machine. After further pushing they actually will start to do something.
Options available to customers. These have all been offered to me by Lenovo over the last few weeks.
Repair: Lenovo will take in your machine for repair and replace every single component (as they did with mine). They refuse to replace the machine initially as the terms of the warranty state ‘repair’. This will not fix the issues as it is due to flawed design and cheap internal components. I have had mine taken in now 4 times, of which they kept it for a week twice now.
Sell it privately with free product compensation: This was a very strange offer and one I felt a little uncomfortable about. Lenovo offered that if I chose to sell the machine privately (as they have so many problems) then they would give me a free Thinkpad Tablet 2 as compensation for the loss of value. I thought about this but turned them down, it seemed a little too dodgy to me.
Replacement with another Yoga: Lenovo offered me a replacement Yoga machine. They claimed a couple of weeks ago that a new model was arriving with a revised wifi design and CPU. Unfortunately when these arrived in stock (these are the ones reported a few posts back) they found they still have the same Realtek wifi card and flawed antenna design. So they quickly told me they didn’t want to do this anymore and offered new options. I would have been happy with the option if they had fixed the issues in the new one.
Replacement with a Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch at no extra cost: I have been offered a replacement for my Yoga with an X1 Carbon Touch. It is the only other machine in Lenovo’s product lineup that has an equivalent specs list. I said that this was a perfectly acceptable solution but they have since pushed me into the final option, refund.
Refund: Lenovo have offered me a full refund for the machine even though it was bought from a retail shop. In Hong Kong we are not lucky enough to have 30 day returns and things like that so shops don’t want to be involved after 7 days. Lenovo have said that they will issue a full refund to me. This was the option they chose in the end of the three acceptable ones. However they are now kicking their heels on it and have told me it will be another 3 weeks before they can think about doing it.
Although reading these may seem like Lenovo have attempted to do their best. Unfortunately that couldn’t be further from the truth. This has taken nearly 10 weeks of my time so far. Lenovo have attempted at every step of the way to tell me it is not covered by warranty or that the issue does not exist (or is my own fault). I have had to create videos showing the problems, document and take photos of everything. They have hardly ever initiated a conversation about this and I have had to make every single call. It reached the point where I had to threaten legal action before they finally offered some proper solutions.
My recommendation for anyone thinking of buying a Yoga 13 is to think again. Although some people seem happy with theirs, I can’t see that any of the machines can really be perfect with so many flaws. The price is the same as other premium machines from Apple, Sony, Asus and Samsung. Buy one of these and you will be much happier.
For those that already bought one and has problems then it is a little bleak without some arguing. Lenovo are ignoring the problems posted here on the forums and trying to tell customers that ‘no one else is having that problem’. It took a lot of online attention before they accepted the flawed design with the U310 and U410 models. My hope is that they do take notice of their customers in this case but I am very doubtful that they will as it would cost them money (they are after all a business so money comes first over customers). If anyone would like to follow up with Lenovo and would like to reference my case when seeking the resolution options then I will post my customer service reference numbers when I get back to the office on Monday. I am based in Hong Kong but Lenovo warranties on the Yoga are international so I feel options should be the same for all customers.
Maybe my expectations are too high, I just expected a computer that costs more than $1000 to work properly out of the box.

  • Do i have a virus, or is it just Mountain Lion teething problems?

Ever since i upgraded to Mountain Lion, it has impressed me, but also shocked me. It has some really useful features, and looks beautiful, but i cant help wondering if Apple is loosing it's touch, when it behaves like Windows Vista. The first problem was that it randomly kept restarting whilst in sleep, whick causes lots of problems. That has stopped now, but the are even worse problems. Web based application ofthen crash and are unresponsive, and it denies the existance of my Air port, which it is connected to, which keeps all the backups. Also, I recently noticed a Java DMG in Disk utility, but it wasn't in finder, when i looked, so i ejected it using disk utility. These are all tell tale signs of a virus, however, it also claims that the bootcamp partition doesn't exist, (yet i can still boot from it, and use windows), and also it told me that it couldn't eject Macintosh HD, because itunes was using it. Why would I ask my best computer to commit suicide? Also, when i connect my portable hard drive to it, it doesnt show up, but if i connect it in Windows or on another Mac, it works fine. So, it's either a virus, a reliability issue in Mountain Lion, Please help.

You don't have a "virus." That's the Windows way of thinking. You have a misconfigured system. What exactly happens when web-based applications crash?

  • LOTS of Memory problems on new 8 core

I just moved from my totally stable G5  running Logic Pro8 on Tiger to my new Mac Pro 8 core. I am having nothing but problems with
low memory issues. Everything is up to date and it doesn't seem to matter if I'm in 32 or 64 bit, running reason in Rewire or not. I am having
trouble narrowing down the problem. It seems to be random. I have seen a lot of posts about this but no real solutions. I'm thinking I got
a bad computer. it's 2 months old. This computer has 6 gig of RAM. I have talked with lots of friends running the same systems with
no problems. What is the latest? I have been on the phone with Apple and Sweetwater and it's all vague. A couple examples and as you can see I don't have
that much going yet. WAY less than I could run on my G5. I have also been unable to get a second monitor to work with the mini display to DVI connector
but it did work with mini display to VGA on the same monitor which is weird, and it seemed slow.
    (Mac Pro 8 Core Snow Leopard 10.6.8 - Logic Pro9 9.1.5 - Reason5 (tried 6 for 64 bit as well) - APOGEE Ensemble - Omnisphere, Stylus, KONTACT4,
East West Play, Superior Drums, UAD 2 and others)

OK. Here is a perfect example of what I am dealing with. I have a song open with a movie because I am scoring today (I never had trouble on my G5 importing and workin with movies and dialogue tracks). I have Reason open
with one of the Reason5 Bass sounds, which takes alot of memory but again never an issue on my G5. I have TWO audio tracks with no plug-ins. Superior Drums, one kit. 1 ESX with a simple cymbal swell sound. I try and load a pad in Omnisphere and I get the below message. If I turn the bass into audio and quit Reason5 it will let
me load the omnisphere sound, so I'm wondering how much of this is a Reason/ Rewire issue. Again never had
trouble with this on G5, Tiger, Reason4 and Logic8. I am running at 32 bit because Reason5 is not 64 bit. Reason6 is 64 bit and even though I don't like the new interface I will pruchase it and run at 64 bit if it will
work. Again I keep hearing different things about 64 bit and 32 bit. I'm trying both and I don't see any
consistent change, still weird and random memory issues.

  • Whiten Teeth Problem with Perfect Portrait Tool or Smart Brush Tool

The "whiten teeth" tool does not work ... while using either the "Perfect Portrait With Guided Edit" mode or the "Smart Brush - Quick Fix" mode.  When I select the toothbrush and drag the curser across the teeth (as the on-line instructor did on the Adobe TV video), I get the following message "Could not use the Smart Brush Tool because no adjustment was selected".  Is something wrong with my Photoshop software?  I'm using a MacBook Pro (OS 10.7.1) and Photoshop Elements 9 (updated Oct 1, 2011).  I "unistalled" Photoshop Elements 9 and reinstalled it and I'm still having the same issue.

You could also try using the dodge tool (keep pressing the letter O on your keyboard) until you see the blue dodge tool. No selection is necessary; you simply brush. A lot of people find this much easier but don’t overdo it.
Enlarge your image to about 200% and use the square bracket keys to increase or decrease the cursor size to fit the area to be whitened. Set exposure in the options bar to about 50% or lower. Gently brush over the teeth area until you get them as you like.

  • H E L P! Updated my iPhone and now LOTS of new problems never had before!

Everything was working perfectly. Then I updated my iPhone and iTunes software (via the automatic update which notified me this week that a new version of one or the other was available so I said "yes" and figured everything would be ok as usual).
NUTHIN' but problems ever since and yes, I have rebooted my iPhone several times, quit and restarted my Mac, quit and restarted iTunes, turned off the iPhone and on again, et al. CONTINUE to have problems - I get message:
Cannot sync. Mac sayd - Device timed out (re my iPhone). iPhone says it's syncing but when I slide the slider, it just goes to the phone like it wasn't even syncing or anything.
Mac PBook 1.5 gig ram 10.4.10
    iTunes 7.5 (19)
    iPhone 1.1.2
Cannot get a call out via 611 for the usual AT&T support but CAN call regular phone numbers.
HELP!!!! Everything was fine before! What in the world happened here????!!!

"From the above alone, it has to be your computer, it is the only thing left related to the phone" That's nice but Apple says it's NOT the problem so I'm not sure how it is you think you know more than they do. You know what the Genius bar guys said (all 3 of the ones I worked with)... they say they read a lot of stuff on this forum that is completely off and just full of BS and that people here tend that I should definitely take analysis and advice - such as yours - with a large grain of salt. Had you paid attention to my posts, you would have read back there that I DID bring my computer to them and they went through it and determined it was NOT the computer/Mac. THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS and you have less experience than they and you think you know what it is... I don't think so, buddy.
You must have stock in Apple to be so quick to come to their defense. Having myself worked for Apple, I know that Apple does its best to LOOK AT WHAT WAS DONE RIGHT AND NOT RIGHT and make improvements. And I worked on a committee that dealt with support issues. They want to know when a user feels they have not gotten what they paid for vs. your kind of defensive blather. Give it a rest, ok? I CLOSED MY CASE and Apple has already asked me to give them feedback about my experience - MY experience... not yours or colored by your opinion.
This forum is not for opinions. It's for straightening out technical issues so give it a rest and get back to the issues here which are technical only, period.
PS The amount of time required by me to go to Apple (3 visits now) out of a work day has now cost me more than the amount of money spent by Apple to replace this stuff which they say they don't know what is wrong with. And the cable you mention... they didn't swap it out. They did not replace the cable in the end - they gave me a used cheaper cable to use upon the first visit and the 2nd visit, instead of replacing the original cable, they swapped out the phone. And I have lost about 3 days on a schedule for work which I'm already behind on.
Last words - CASE CLOSED. NO FURTHER COMMENTARIES, et al needed, period.

  • Lots of publishing problems following site split

    Hi,
I'm having lots of problems publishing my iWeb site. I have quite a big site (~100 pages, >1Gb) and it was becoming a bit difficult to maintain. So, I decided to split my site into several sections. First of all, I had lots of problems just doing this - specifically, when I tried to drag over a "My Albums" page containing several albums, and my blog page (lots of entries), iWeb seem to become corrupted. I couldn't open some of the pages (in iWeb), and when I closed iWeb down it wouldnt reopen properly. Thank god for TimeCapsule!
So, I restored my domain site from backup and started again. Anyhow, I eventually realised that I wouldnt have problems, if I first moved the ALbum pages from under the MyAlbum page, and moved them individually....but same problem with my blog. Eventually I figured out that I could keep my blog in my original site, move everything else, then rename the two sites. This seemed to work, at least, no errors or crashing, BUT since then, I haven't been able to publish. The red pages dont turn red, and the html files dont appear on my iDisk.
I've tried everything that I can find suggesting on the forum:
    - I dont have problem saving other files to iDisk
    - I dont have a problem publishing to a local disk
    - I've deleted the plist files, repaired permissions and rebooted.
I restored my original domain file and was able to publish that, but since the changes, nothing. I dont get any error messages - iWeb happily chugs away supposedly creating and publishing the pages, they just dont seem to turn up at their intended destination.
I cant think of anything else to try - anyone got any good ideas?
    Thanks a lot.

Hi mate, I have a website with 92 pages (2.6GB) and have experienced exactly the same dramas. It takes ages to publish and then just when you think you are home - it aborts and gives some temporary file error message. I have been to the Genius Bar at Apple, who have not acknowledged there is a problem until I show them these forum pages. Then they huddle together and go through the threads shielding their screens!
I tried to split my site to then only publish smaller sections, as I have encountered the familiar problem of change 1 part of a page and the whole site turns red and so wants to republish the entire site even when you select Publish Site Changes. I have tried Web Site Maestro to upload only 1 Folder (ie page) at a time - and no joy. I have tried using CyberDuck to get around this - and no joy.
I appreciate that this isn't helping you, but at least you know you aren't alone. And it is highly frustrating to say the very least.

  • Hidden files & lots of other problems!

hi everyone! im new to the mac world and im having some major beginners problems!
i want to hide some files on my laptop, but i have absolutely no idea how. ive searched the web and some people say to type lots of 'commands' in the 'terminal' (no idea what this even is) others say to put it in the 'library'. i have found the library, but is there no way of hidding a file on macs like there is on windows?
also, during my attempt to try and hide files, i did the following:
    finder
    file
    find
    this mac
    kind is document
and its come up with just LOADS of things! like all sorts of crazy pictures (like of cakes and leprochauns and winston churchill) and also documents from about 4 or 5 years ago which i didnt write on this laptop nor have i ever stored them on this laptop! as far as im aware they were even deleted off my old laptop!
so where have all these pictures and long lost documents come from?
my only guess is that as ive got my mail linked up to the 'mail' app, that perhaps they have come from there?
also, it has shown files which i THINK must have been hidden through windows, i tried saving them on to my mac and i cant find them anywhere!!! can you not see files which were hidden on windows? if so, how do i change it so i CAN see them?
any help would be much appreciated!
Thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply!
    Hayley

To address your immediate question 'how to hide files', I suggest you try this app:
    http://www.altomac.com
It comes with directions, and it's free.
On other implied questions, your search process asked the Mac to find all "documents" on "this mac". That's what was found. Apparently a lot of old files were copied over to your new Mac, so they were found when you did a find.
I have recommended this site to folks coming to grips with a Mac for the first time. Once again, it is free:
    http://www.dummies.com/how-to/computers-software/macs-os-x/Mac-Basics.html
Finally, take a look at the Missing Manual series. Some of them are available for free download.

  • Lots of serious problems.

About a week ago, i started having some major problems with my late 2009 MBP.
First off all, the trackpad does not click anymore. it doesnt have the click feel like it used to. if i click on the left side of the trackpad, it will not register, and i have to push with a good ammount of force on the right side of the trackpad to get a response. It's been so bad i had to go into settings and start using touch sensitivity. it's been a real pain and i miss the clicking.
2nd, if i pick it up by holding the front left of the computer when it's open (left of the trackpad, below the command keys) the computer shuts itself off with no warning.
Also, after some use the sound stops. i think it has to do with the front left side because when im playing music and rest my palm there, it makes an odd beep noise until i lift up my hand. when the sound stops entirely i either have to restart or close the computer for half an hour for the sound to go back on.
the computer runs fine, it's cool, cpu and memory run low, and it's still fast.
what is happening? it hasnt been dropped or gotten wet to my knowledge, and i live by myself so i think it's okay. what could be faulty?
i do not have a reinstall disk.

Rental insurance, parent/guardian rental/homeowner insurance. Any or all could help. Apple might charge more than you can afford, but only by taking it in can you tell for sure. If the price is more than you can afford, the following places may be cheaper:

Worst comes to worse, you could try to repair it yourself with instructions from http://www.ifixit.com/ and http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ but you'd have to have a pretty good feel for what the problem is.
    Good luck!

  • Lots of ipod problems

Hi this is my first post...i recently got a new 30GB Black iPod. A few days after i got it i started having all kinds of problems. I was trying to watch a movie and then none of the buttons would work. I reset my iPod and then got the sad faced icon. Then i tried plugging it in to my PC and it was non responsive. I got a screen on my ipod saying to restore my ipod so i did. Now neither my computer nor iTunes can recognize it. I cant get any music back on it. Also when i plug in my ipod it freezes, i can't remove disk safely and when i unplug the ipod it still says "Do Not Disconnect".
I have tried reinstalling iPod Updater, now it wont even start up...it says iPod Service error and exits ipod updater.
I have also had the problem with my ipod skipping songs. Also one time while i was listening to a song i started hearing a sreeching noise and then the music stopped.
I have an iPod mini and none of these problems ever occured until i downloaded the new software. I think i might have faulty software disk.
I have no idea what is going on Please HELP!!!

This is what you can do about the iPod Service Error

As far as the sad iPod, take a look at this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61771
If you're not able to get it working, there's a link at the end of that article to set up an iPod service request.
    Hope this is helpful
