Low Speed after apparent fix

Hi there,
Recently (The past 5 - 6 weeks) i have been experiencing very low internet connection speeds, im used to 3.30mb down and 0.80mb up and a ping of around 32 to 42.
2 weeks ago a made a call to BT technical support that helped me work out what was going on, i did the usualy line testing, using the tester socket and so on that lead them to send out a engineer who replaced the drop cable to the house as i live on a lane that only has one other house here and the cables are very old an poorly maintained even some of the cables vanish into the trees/branches at some points (Outside of the property boundries ofcourse).
After he left and did his final tests the line was fine again it was up to 4mb down and a good 0.90mbs (wireless test) up as the drop cable was now new so a boost in quality was kinda expected, the weather effected the quality oftern before it was replaced and sometimes when you used the phone in the poor weather you could hear crackles on the line.
I know the line is montored after a repair job like this but i have only ever seen it go down untill i'm back to the speed it was before the drop cabel was replaced.
After doing the line test recommented here i can see the speed is very low, I would'nt even call this broadband at the moment, and the IP profile now only says 1mb Max upload which can't be right as ive been consistantly having an uploading speed of 3 - 4mb for a few years now roughly 5 - 7, so instantly thats a potently error at the exchange.
Here are the results of the BT Test  (Tester Socket Wired)
And here is a noise test taken at the same time.
Hope this information helps, other tests show that speed arraving from the exchange is 1.15
Thank you
Arron Davies

  • Slow speed after line fixed

    Hi,
We recently had a problem with our line (lots of noise), so an openreach engineer came out, who was very helpful, and replaced a large section of the outside line that had degraded and fitted a new master box. I was aware that after fixing the fault, I would have to wait for the broadband to retrain, and reset the noise margin on the IP profile.
But I was quite supprised that the day after my speed had actually reduced further. Ive phone the help line, where I was told there was a problem, but no-one seems to be able to sort it, and ive been told to wait. This is very annoying as I had over 11Mbps before the fault, and now its that slow its pretty much unusable for streaming video / games.
This is my current ADSL stats,

Any Suggestions of what to do next would be greatly appreciated, as the call centre's dont seem to be of any use.

Upto 2d 10hours it remained exactly the same. Ive just come in from work now, where it should have reached 3d 5hours, but here is the status

It looks like it has resynced, and the upstream nosie margin has reduced, and the upstream speed improved. The downstream though is exactly the same. I really cant wait another 3 days again, as ive now been without usable internet for 7 days already, and i will probably need it for work this weekend.
So what do i do next?

  • Low speed after 10 day stabilisation period

    Hi all,
I had my BB activated on the 1st Nov & was syncing at 17.000kbps, Next day we were only getting 4.543kbps.
Not knowing what was happening i rang BT. The chap on the phone told me about the 10 day stabilisation period, So i thought ok fair doo's and left it at that.
So the 11th of Nov comes and i go to check the router stats...
     ADSL Link                 Downstream          Upstream
Connection Speed      4543 kbps     1211 kbps
Line Attenuation        20.5 db            12.2 db
Noise Margin              30.1 db             6.2 db
These stats have been the same as from the 2nd of November till now the 12th.
Sooooo i rings up BT again and askes if they could manually configure my line as im thinking the 10 day stabilisation period is up and that ip profile must of got stuck or something.
But this chap is telling me he can not manually configure the line i've got to wait another 10 days?
Is this the norm for BT? As before i switched to BT i was with Sky & could not remember 20 days stabilisation period.
Was i just beeing fobbed off or do i really have to wait another 10 days? The chap on the phone was pritty sure he could not do anything till the 20th if my speed had not changed.
Begining to wish i stayed with Sky now

Hi, i've no problems with disconnections but i have manualy power cycled the router a few times and we have a token electric meter which tends to go off every 2-3 days which cant be helped
The electric went today around 8 or 9am this morning, im guessing this is no good for my line all these power cycles

  • Low speed after latest update of Ellipsis Jetpack (MHS700L) software

    Hi,
I did the update to the Ellipsis Jetpack (MHS700L) about a week ago.
Up to that point my "speed" was normally 65mbps..but since the upgdate
to the Jetpack I get no better than 54mbps.
Nothing else has changed..there are still 3 items connected to the Jetpack,
a Laptop, a Printer and a Desktop system. Nothing about those three has
changed. The only change was the software update to the jetpack...
Any ideas as to why the speed has dropped and not returned to 65mbps!!
    thanks

    HI,
I guess I solved my problem...
Uninstalled all software realted to using
    this jetpack...reinstalled latest updated
    software for jetpack, desktop wireless
    adapter and restatred everying...and
    voila!!! everything works now..
    Getting steady 65mbps speed..
not great but I do live in the boondocks.!!
    so..problem solved

  • Lower speeds after moving BACK to master socket

Around a week ago, I relocated my HH5 and mastersocket back to the entry point into my home (it was using all manner of rubbish extension cabling) and since then my sync speeds have dropped. Before the relocation, I was achieving a sync of > 60Mbps, now it won't exceed 56Mbps. HH5 stats:
The "zero" values on the line and signal attenuation are a little odd. Any ideas at what I should look for?

Are you looking for a missing 4Mbps sync speed?
The speeds don't seem unreasonable for the attenuation and the noise margin is near to 6. If you attracted DLMs attention when you were tidying up the wiring, normal service should be restored in a few days, maybe a couple of weeks.
If sync speed reduces however, you may have a noise problem.

  • Broadband speed after phoneline fault fixed.

How long does it take for broadband to get back up to speed after a phoneline fault has been resolved?
Our phone fault has just been fixed after being out for more than a week. The broadband remained connected but cripplingly slow. Now the phone is back the bb is slightly better but nothing like it's old speed.
I appreciate that it may take a while but any idea how long?
    Thanks.

please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Satellite C850 - Low fan speed after BIOS update

    Hello,
So I have my Satellite C850-PSKCEV bios updated around 6 months ago to version 6.80 (I bought my laptop in 2012), and since then the fan is running at low speeds and will never run full speed as before, and as a consequence the laptop overheats prematurely and very fast, and even when the laptop is not in use but left running it does overheat, also gaming is not even possible as any game that I run (even with the lowest settings) gets a fps drop every 5 seconds and lasts 5-10 seconds which renders even the lightest games unplayable, also I am afraid of the continuous overheat to damage the laptop's internal components.
I did clean the fan and vents from dust and there is not even one particle inside them and yet the fan won't run fast and I can't feel but very slight airflow from the vents as apposed to the strong one before this problem.

    Hi
Have you tried to change cooling method settings and set it to maximum performance?

  • Low speed

Have very low speed - 0.225 mbs, download. On signing up I was told I will be receiving minimum of 8mbs, average of 15mbs and a maximum of 19mbs. Besides being passed from pillar to post as no-one understands why the broadband is so low I have just been informed that the maximum I can get is now 10mbs - quite a big difference? I have also been told I will be charged to have the phone line looked at even though it was only installed by BT two months previously so I will be paying twice. Is this right? I have been lied to, called a liar, transferred to every department within BT. Each member of staff has told me they can't help that I need to be transferred to a different department so after five hours on the phone I am still at square one! This has been going on for two months. Oh I was also told I would receive compensation for not receiving a service but apparently I'm suddenly not eligible for this. I can get faster broadband (more than 10mbs) for cheaper elsewhere. BT have broken the contract by not supplying me with the service that they promised. BT staff don't seem to know much as they can't even agree on the rate of broadband I should be receiving. This is not to mention how rude they have all been towards me. I am thankful that everything is recorded as this proves that I am not at fault and there are obviously training issues that need to be addressed within all departments in the company. Has anyone else had the same experience? Can any moderators respond?

    Hello, thanks for your response.
I can assure you that i have tried absolutely everything including replacement router, filters etc.
The line was only installed on the 14th April, and BT only guarantee their work for a month! I paid £130 to have a line installed...
They have admitted there is a fault in the line, but even after 6 hours of diagnostic tests still cant find the problem. These tests werent all carried out today but over the past 2 months yet they still didn't send another engineer round to check the line had been installed correctly. I was only offered this option once the "28 day" warranty on the line had expired hence I was expected to pay for it. If this information is incorrect, i have been lied to by the Technical team at BT once again.
The end result after approx 6 hours on the phone today was that i demanded a full refund for the past 2 months of broadband that i was paying for but not receiving, which was granted after a struggle, and a cancellation of the contract due to BT breaching the contract on at least 2 counts. The first being that i was lied to by the initial sales advisor about the speed of the internet connection i was to expect and BT could not honour this and the second due to paying for a service that i was not receiving. I still have not resolved the problem with the line itself which needs to be looked at by BT regardless of which isp i decide to go with now.
I think BT really need to look into the staff they have on the end of the phone as they have been nothing but helpless and i can imagine that they have lost BT 1000's of customers due to their lack of knowledge or training.

  • Slow broadband speed after BT replaced cable to th...

    Hi,
Until recently I always had a good stable broadband connection. However a couple of weeks ago it started dropping out often. This turned out to be because of a very noisy line, I rarely use the phone and when I went to check it I could hear a lot of noise on the line. I went through BT and an engineer came round this Monday and discovered the cable from outside my house had pretty much corroded away - it had likely been there 40 years! So the cable was replaced and the noise on the phone line went away (Engineer fixed it on the 11th June in the afternoon)
However during the time the line was bad my broadband (clearly in an attempt to cope with the noise) gained much higher noise margins and gradually got slower and slower, this I can understand.
The problem is now the line is repaired its still stuck at this lower speed which is really rather slow. I have read that eventually the IP profile will reset itself, but I work from home some of the time and this current speed is a real problem for me. Is there anything I can get done to get it back up to speed?

Keith, is this really the only Solution? My conneciton made it to a bit over 3 days, then for some reason its reset again
This time the upload speed has gone up some but download is unacceptable. If I have to wait another 5 days then its going to end up about 2 weeks I have had very slow broadband from BT (and who knows if it will stay up 5 days this time...), yet I boubt they will be refunding me my money for the BT vision service I can't use due to the speed issues with the BT connection. Seriously having to wait 5 days after they fix a problem is ridiculous, especially when it might reset at any point!

  • Internet connecting at much lower speed lately

I have HSI Enhanced and have had it for 10 months at this location and for a number of years at my previous location. Last October I was connecting at 3360 / 832 kbps. After some months it went down to  around 2800 / 832 kpbs. I wasn't crazy about speeds getting lower as time went on rather than the connection being improved, but it was pretty much free of disconnects and reliable so I was happy with it.
In the past month or so I had noise on my voice line which Verizon fixed, but my connection is now 1792 / 448 Kbps all the time, that is a drop I will not accept if this is the way it is going to be from now on. Also there is a lot of losing the connection, not to the DSL, that light stays on but the internet light goes off. I went through the usual channels online chat, telephone support to wherever that goes. I'm done with all that, that's good for people with trouble using their modem, etc. or can't connect it but not what I am looking for.
Finally they sent out a tech who was a nice enough person, what he did was call a central office and after them first claiming the lower speed was the right speed they put the connection back in the area of 3360/832. Then they said it will probably adjust itself to down around 2800 down, which it what I had before so I was OK with it. After several days with a number of disconnects (they don't last too long but very annoying) I am back to 1792 / 448.
I am using the same modem - Actiontec GT704WGB
I don't need a tech call here in the house again, nothing has changed in here since I moved in months ago. They can check the outside signal without me waiting around for them. They don't have to stand in here to call an office on their tablet.
I need to hear from Verizon personnel that can tell me LOCAL information about why my connection speed has tanked and why there are dropouts now. And most importantly, why it can't be the same as it was for all those months. As I said, I was happy with that - especially when it was 3360 / 832 kbps.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When Verizon turns your speed back up, they have to disable the optimization system they use on the lines to maintain your speed, since it sounds like that is just turning your speed back down after a few days. Make them fix it back again.
For future note, if you do have problems with your DSL and you're also having audio quality issues with your phone, call Voice Repair, and leave DSL support out of the mix. DSL support usually dials back the speed for a line issue from what I've seen as a first try basis. If you do have noise that disappears when the DSL modem is off, then that could be from other things which DSL support OR phone support will be needed for.
Ex: Two years ago I had a problem with my Frontier DSL line having a ton of static on the line. The DSL modem was not synchronizing, however the noise stopped when I shut off the modem. It turns out, the night before lightning struck a tree outside of my home, and caused the DSL modem which was several years old to fry. The modem was still powering up, but the chip responsible for the DSL connection itself was blown. A new modem from Frontier via DSL Support fixed the DSL connection AND the static.
Ex2: At a local business with Verizon DSL, they hear static on their line from time to time, but only while the DSL is active. The problem was not with the DSL itself or any filters, but as the static got worse it began to show up without the DSL being connected. Voice repair was dispatched instead of calling DSL Support, and resolved the problem by running new cable between the building and the Verizon copper trunk. In addition, they found and corrected some corroding splices.

  • I Can't Burn a CD any more! and a lower speed does nothing - HELP!

I have been burning CDs on this machine (imac 10.3.9) the same way for years and years. (7)
    Up till last month.
This is what I get when I burn a playlist.
"itunes can not burn this cd because your burn speed is too fast for you cd burner or media. Choose a lower speed in the burning pane then try burning again."
I've tried that - even though that seems silly considering I've had no problems at my current settings until now. The lowest burn speed (1) gives me the same error.
I'm hating life and my mac right now, something I though I'd never say.
    Anyone?

If you don't have Nero, check out http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9229334#9229334. I think some people have found a way to get just the Burn Rights program.
If that doesn't work, some people seem to have luck with editing the registry or messing with filters or gear drivers. Check out this discussion starting with Tytus (he came up with the Nero fix) on March 22:

  • IS THERE ANY SIMPLE WAY TO RETURN SPEED PERFORMANCE TO FACTORY SPEED AFTER ABOUT 3 YEARS OF RELATIVELY STANDARD USE?

Everyone is often so quick to bash all these 'cleaning' utilities but rarely give any solutions.
There's a lot of critiques and endless lists of what NOT to do to avoid performance problems.
My Powerbook is 3 years old. It runs like molasses... SLOW.
I'm not a computer geek, but I'm smart and understand quite a bit more than a newbie.
Do I need a degree in computer engineering to fix/speed up my mac?
Yes, I know, the cleaning utilities suck. But is it really true of all of them?
I'm not totally convinced because there seems to be such a huge market for them.
Sure, there's a huge market for bottled water too, so maybe they are just useless/marketing crap, but I really want to return to my original speed performance quickly and can't seem to find out if it's possible with a utility.
I'm not willing to sit down for 3 hours and study line by line b.s. about how to fix it.
I have no problem if it's not fixable. I've always assumed operating systems outgrow their hardware's capacity to keep up, and sell my old one for a new one, no prob.
I don't care, really, but again, I'm curious if there is any quick, easy, user-friendly utility or method that I can use to return the speed performance I had as recently as a year ago? (I'd be satisfied with that).
Anyone willing to bite on that? Anyone willing to not critique, complain, tell me what NOT to do and actually know a solution?
IS THERE ANY SIMPLE WAY TO RETURN SPEED PERFORMANCE BACK TO (OR CLOSE TO) ORIGINAL FACTORY SPEED AFTER ABOUT 3 YEARS OF RELATIVELY STANDARD USE?
The only thing I may have done outside of the norm was some video editing, but very little.

  • Receiving 'low speed usb 1.1' error when syncing

I updated itunes to 10.0.1 a day after it was released and have synced my ipod a few times without any problems. A few days ago, an error message popped up when I connected my ipod saying that my ipod was connected to a "low-speed usb 1.1 port" and says I should "connect to a high-speed usb 2.0 port if one is available on my computer". The sync seemed to be slower than usual. My mac mini only has usb 2.0 ports and was connected directly into the computer and not to a usb hub.
I have reset my ipod, restored it, and restarted my computer and still receive the same error message.
Has anyone received a similar message and have any suggestions on what I can try next? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
