Lync 2013 external to internal IM is slow or messages do not arrive
Hi,
I'm building a Lync 2013 setup on Windows Server 2012. Internal Lync 2013 standard server with Lync 2013 edge server in a DMZ. No federation.
Internally al users are able to chat, audio/video and conferance.
My problem is that external users are able to sign in and start a chat with an internal user but it looks like communication is only working in one way.
Example:
User 1 is external;
User 2 is internal;
User 1 starts IM with user 2 and says "hi"
User 2 receives the IM and accepts and is seeing the "Hi" messages from user 1.
User 2 reply's with "Hi" back and that messages does not arrive at user 2. Some time's not at all, some times after a minute or 2.
When user 1 is receiving the reply user 2 still see's the rotating dot's that the message is beeing send. and after a while user 2 receives: "This message may not have been sent to User1
because there was no response from the server."
The situation seems to occures only from internally to externally and also with both users externally. I cannot see any error's in the event logs of the Internal or Edge server. De debugging tools is showing me error's like:
Text: Message or one of its headers caused SIP transaction processing error
Result-Code: 0xc3e93f5b SIPPROXY_E_TRANSACTION_TIMEOUT
Text: Message was discarded by the application
Result-Code: 0xc3e93ec6 SIP_E_AUTH_CANNOT_CHALLENGE
Audio/video requests are also arriving at the other user but are unable to establish a connection.
I can't really figure out what is going wrong. Certificates are correct, i think firewall rules are in place otherwise i have no communication at all i'm guessing. Routes also seem ok.
Some help would be great
Regards
Pascal
Hi,
The internal user Lynctest is sending a message to pslijkerman who is connected externally.
User pslijkerman receives the messages but the lynctest user keeps seeing rotating dots (processing message or something) after 1 minute or so the following messages is displayed in the Lync Im screen for user lynctest.
======
This message may not have been sent to Pascal Slijkerman because there was no response from the server.
======
This is some logging from the internal lync server.

Trying to save files on "PC" side of Mac, using a FreeAgent external harddrive. I get the error message E:/not accessible access denied. Can I not use an external harddrive, if not, what is the best way to back up PC side of a Mac
Apple has really crappy NTFS read-only that does not always work. And it is probably a licensing issue.
Paragon Software is constantly being updated and supported with their NTFS for Mac OS X - they also have an HFS+ driver for Windows that works - Apple's HFS+ read-only driver for Boot Camp / Windows does not.
I keep seeing problems and lack of support for MacFUSE, that could change.

Lync 2013 External Mobility Not Working
Hello,
The issue I seem to be having is in regards to the external mobility access.
So far everything else in our environment seems to be functioning properly.
The Lync desktop client works both internally as well as externally.
The Lync internal mobility also works. The only issue seems to be with the external mobility part.
I tried going to the external autodiscover address for our system, https://lyncdiscover.mydomain.com but it doesn’t return anything either.
I think the issue lies somewhere with DNS or my reverse proxy, however I’m having a hard time being able to just start changing settings seeing as how I don’t want to break everything that is currently working for our users.
I’ve been through a lot of the post here but I still can’t seem to find the settings to fix the issue I’m having.
Here is a breakdown of my settings I feel are in question:

1 – Lync Edge Server (EDGE01)
1 – Reverse Proxy Server (RPROXY01)

Lync 2013 Mobility over internal Wifi
I'm at a loss. All functionionality works on my lync installation. i'm running an enterprise pool with two hosts internally, a single consolidated edge server, and a reverse proxy. I have read countless posts, and recommendations how how
to setup lyncdiscoverinternal and it still fails. here is my best attempt at making sense of this. I hope someone can tell me where i'm going wrong.
From outside i'm using public Ip addresses NATed to my reverse proxy for lyncdiscover.mydomain.com.
internally i'm using a CNAME record to direct lyncdiscoverinternal.mydomain.com to webext.mydomain.com, then I have a seperate A record pointing webext.mydomain.com to the External private IP address of my reverse proxy server. So this in no way uses
public addressing. my understanding is that since i'm using a Cisco ASA I can't hairpin the connection so i'm stuck directing it to the reverse proxy. can anyone tell me what is wrong?
the mobile client give a generic message about not being able to contact the servers. the lync connectivity analyzer returns the following.l...

hopefully someone can make sense of this for me.
Thanks,Yeah, hairpinning won't generally work with an ASA without a modification. Lyncdiscoverinternal shouldn't point to webext, lyncdiscover should. It looks like you're just getting a simple connection refused. Once you've got your record pointed,
make sure you can access it internally by using a web browser to navigate to
https://lyncdiscover.domain.com and see if it prompts you to download a .json file with your external web FQDNs referenced inside. You may need to point that record at the inside interface of your reverse
proxy server, but once it's working, point your external web services at the same IP internally and your mobile clients should be happier.

Lync 2013 with Windows 8.1 very slow
I upgrade to Win 8.1 this week and now I cannot use Lync 2013. I can log in but then Lync doesn't wotk.
Also, check out this thread:

Lync 2013 On Premises integration with Exchange Online Unified Messaging
I am working on deploying Lync 2013 Server on premises and integrating it with Exchange Online. We do not use Exchange on premises.
My question is how to integrate with Unified Messaging specifically. Other functions like Calendar, call logs seem to be working fine.
There are many guides online on how to do this, and I have read many and attempted to follow with no luck. All seem to assume that UM has already been deployed on prem which I don't have. Is this possible to integrate Lync with Exchange Online without having
and Exchange deployment on premises first.
Another source of confusion is the Office Voice Access number and how Lync clients dial voicemail. Where does this go if somebody dials internally (from Lync) and externally (from PSTN)? Exchange online or Lync on prem? And if Lync, then my guess would be
Lync forwards on to Exchange Online UM somehow. Do I have to purchase a number from somewhere because of it being on 365 or can I use a spare DID?
From my tests so far, when I call voicemail as any user, it seems to dial that same user and then the call fails.
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me.You can integrate Exchange UM with Lync Server 2013.

Migrating to Lync 2013 from OCS 2007 R2 ... to unprep or not to unprep
I've been reading on TechNet that I should unprep the domain and forest after decommissioning / uninstalling all OCS 2007 R2 server roles:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd572243(v=office.13).aspx
...but then, in other places (such as blogs and TechNet forums), I've read not to unprep the domain and forest if Lync 2013 is already deployed:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/lync/en-US/6b8cd7ca-fe67-418b-ae66-5be682d8d2d6/unprep-ocs-2007-r2-domain-and-forest-with-existing-lync-installation?forum=ocsplanningdeployment
http://www.ucprofessional.com/2011/04/decommisioning-ocs-2007-r2-after.html
Would someone please clarify what to do here and why? While I haven't personally done a deep dive on everything it does, my understanding is that's it's more than just a simple mod to the system container. For example, from the OCS decommission article you referenced: "Running
Unprep for a domain removes the access control entries (ACEs) granted to Active Directory universal groups". Lync still uses the same RTCUniversal groups, so touching it at all with Lync in production as well could be bad.
Forest prep actually creates these groups:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd441353(v=office.13).aspx That said, I haven't seen an unprep referenced in the migration from OCS to Lync docs, and the doc you referenced is specifically for completely removing OCS from your environment
where these groups wouldn't be needed. So, while I can't tell you exactly what all it does, I really wouldn't mess with it unless you have a strong reason to or are willing to rebuild Lync to get a few old objects out of the system container.

Lync 2013 with Windows 8.1 unusably slow
Hi, I have a Windows 8 Enterprise (VL) laptop with 64-bit Office 2013 installed on it. A couple of days ago I updated my laptop with Windows 8.1.
That seems to have upset Lync. It has slowed dow so much as to be unusable. For instance, if I open a conversation with someone and type something into the input area, my characters appear there with a 5 to 10 second delay per character. For
instance if I type 'hello there', it will take between one and 2 minutes before all the text is in and visible (and that is not because I am a slow typist :)).
Connecting to a video conference just locks the whole thing up. Which is a problem since I have just signed up to a training course which is delivered via Lync.
Only a handful of other people in my office have upgraded, but none of them have the same problem. Has anyone else come across this? Or have any suggestions? I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office but it made no difference. I have
also checked that my machine is up-to-date with Microsoft Update (both via WSUS and direct with MS).
Regards,
Andrew
Andrew vRHi Kelvin, thanks for the response.
Before I saw your comments, I had made some progress towards identifying the cause. It seems to be related to my sound drivers. If I uninstall my Dell drivers
(an IDT driver, dated March 2011), then Lync works perfectly.<o:p></o:p>
The problem I then have though, is that my system no longer recognises my headphones. If I go into the Sound settings, it does not seem to
recognise that my laptop has a single combined audio+mic jack plug – it thinks I should have separate ones.
Unfortunately, there are no more advanced drivers available on the Dell web site.
So I have Lync working again, but at the cost of being able to use my headset.
I will follow your advice and give the Lync 2010 option a try.
Andrew vR
I actually stumbled upon the exact same scenario yesterday. Clean installed 8.1 and Office 2013 on a Latitude E4310, and Lync is extremely slow/crashing. Also, the audio device stopped working. Reinstalled the audio drivers, rebooted a hundred times, repaired
the office installation, but still no go. Then I removed the audio drivers yet again, and immediately rebooted, and then it suddenly started to work again - with Microsoft vanilla audio drivers.
I have also seen on another E4310 which has been upgraded from 8 to 8.1, that Lync got very, very sluggish. A repair of the Office installation solved the problem there - without touching any audio settings/drivers, so I'm not entirely sure this is just
related to the IDT drivers.
We are also seeing similiar problems with Microsoft Visio.... :/ -
Issues with mobility and autodiscovery with Lync 2013 and IIS/ARR
Hi all,
this is my last resort after days and days searching a solution for this problem... unsuccessfully.
All works fine unless the autodiscovery service with external users and the mobility service for both internal and external ones.
I deployed a Standard Edition Lync Server 2013 with:
a consolidated Frontend server in LAN
an Archiving and Monitoring server in LAN
an Edge server in DMZ with 2 NICs (one in DMZ network and one in LAN)
a IIS/ARR 2.5 reverse proxy in DMZ with 2 NICs (one in DMZ network and one in LAN)
All these roles are on Windows Server 2012 R2.
No split-DNS is deployed since I have different domains for internal and external. In any case I used the pinpoint DNS tip to resolve some records internally (I followed this guide http://tsoorad.blogspot.ch/2012/10/lync-server-dns-pinpoint-zones.html)
Here DNS records into internal domain:
A-record for meet.domain-ext.com points to Frontend server local IP
A-record for dialin.domain-ext.com points to Frontend server local IP
A-record for lyncdiscoverinternal.domain-ext.com points to Frontend server IP
A-record for lyncwebexternal.domain-ext.com points to Frontend sever local IP
A-record for autodiscover.domain-ext.com points to Exchange server local IP
Here DNS records into external domain:
CNAME-record for lyncdiscover.domain-ext.com points to lyncwebexternal.domain-ext.com
CNAME-record for sipexternal.domain-ext.com points to lyncwebexternal.domain-ext.com
A-record for meet.domain-ext.com points to Reverse Proxy public IP
A-record for dialin.domain-ext.com points to Reverse Proxy public IP
A-record for lyncwebexternal.domain-ext.com points to Reverse Proxy public IP
I installed and configured IIS/ARR 2.5 with KB2732764 and KB2785586 on Reverse Proxy following the NextHop guide. The local IP address of external NIC on Reverse Proxy is NATTED by a Cisco ASA firewall with public IP address and only 80/443
ports are permitted.
The problems occurs when I try to connect whit my Lync 2013 APP on iPad using autodiscovery service, both internally and externally. After some seconds the APP shows the message “Cannot connect to the server because it could be busy or
temporarily unavailable. Retry.” When I used the IIS/ARR 3.0 the problem looked like an authentication issue, then I came back to ISS/ARR 2.5 version with its KB. Now I cannot understand what is the cause about logfail.
The same behavior occurs with Android Lync 2013 APP and Windows Phone 8 APP.
Moreover my Lync 2013 client on Windows 7 can connect internally with autodiscovery settings but it cannot do it externally.
I'm a bit confused because I cannot understand if the problem is about external webservice of Frontend server or about Reverse Proxy configuration or about Lync Control Panel configuration.
Here is an extracted of iPad Lync 2013 log (sorry if it’s a bit long).
Any helps are very appreciated, thansk a lot!

thanks a lot for your reply!
I created _sip._tls.domain-ext.com SRV record in the external DNS and now autodiscovery works fine. At the beginning I had not created it because I thought lyncdiscover.domain-ext.com A record was enough for autodiscovery. I still cannot understand
why lyncdiscover.domain-ext.com points to reverse proxy, while _sip._tls.domain-ext.com points to Edge server. It's strange because both are part of the research order of Lync 2013 desktop clients.
By the way, mobility still does not work. I tried to insert bot the https URLs as manual configuration but Lync 2013 for iPad was not be able to login. I tried to paste both the URLs in the web browser and:
with https://<ExtwebFQDN>/Autodiscover/autodiscoverservice.svc/Root appears the "Root.json" file to be downloaded;
with https://<IntwebFQDN>/AutoDiscover/AutoDiscover.svc/Root
the message "500-Internal error of server" appears.
Any suggests from you about how to check the configuration of ISS/ARR 2.5?
Thanks again! -
Hi Everyone
I'm having a little trouble getting my head around the setup for Lync external access.
I have setup an ADFS server, Lync 2013 server(works internally), 2012 web proxy server(doing nothing) and an edge server(currently doing nothing).
My understanding is that the Edge and Web proxy server are in "parallel", I.E, they both face the WAN as they perform different tasks.
The problem I have is that I'm unsure how to map everything correctly, I also don't understand how an external Lync client will get it's config. If my domain setup is:
something.domain.internal, and I would like to register a DNS entry externally as something.domain.external. How do I map those correctly via the web proxy and edge server? Sending the request via the firewall is easy enough, however I'm unsure how I'm supposed
to define them on my servers. Is the Lync server supposed to know about the external URL? Or does it not care?Hi,
The Edge Servers run the services that allow external access to IM and presence, conferencing, audio/video, and other media services. You can also configure the Edge Server to federate with other Lync Server and other XMPP deployments.
Lync Server uses the reverse proxy to publish a number of features, such as conferencing meetings, conference join locations, the address book, distribution list expansion, downloading meeting content, device updates, Mobility services, and more. Any reverse
proxy that can meet the requirements for publishing the necessary resource locations can be used.
You just need to define the Edge information in topology builder and publish it. Then configure the server as defined in topology and install local configuration store, setup Lync components and assign certificate. Here is a topology that
using private IP addresses and NAT.

Lync 2013 android client fails to login bug when ISP overrides DNS
Hello all,
I've noticed an issue occurring in the latest Android client (as of 3/9/2015) with internet networks where the provider resolves all DNS queries to an IP address (e.g. T-Mobile, Cox Cable, and lots of others).
Essentially, sometimes I have noticed my android client stuck on "Signing in". The diagnostic logs show that the client is attempting to resolve http://lyncdiscover.contoso.com (which is not resolvable
externally), but T-Mobile is sending it into a search engine. The app continues to try to connect despite not realizing that it really did not resolve properly. See below logs.

Since DNS overrides by ISPs are a common occurance, I believe the app should properly handle this situation. I installed an app to override my DNS and use Google's DNS servers, and the client connects fine.Hi,
Did you login Lync 2013 mobile client internal or external the company?
Did the issue also happen for IOS/Windows Phones or just happen for Android Phones?
Please try to check if the issue only happen for your mobile Lync client or also happen for other Android mobile clients.
If the issue only happen for your Android mobile, please try to uninstall Lync client and install the latest version from Android Market and test the issue again.
If the issue happen for multiple mobile clients, please double check the Reverse Proxy settings, if you use IIS ARR for Reverse Proxy, you can troubleshooting with the help of the link below:

Ok, I figured out that I had a partial misconfiguration, but the existing client behavior still leads to long delays on a variety of networks. I had the reverse proxy forwarding into port 80 instead of 8080, which seemingly caused problems
during the second autodiscovery phase after the first timed out. I have since confirmed that it's not just T-Mobile, but any such provider (e.g. Cox Cable, see below) that resolves all DNS entries.
Essentially, the following is happening:
1) Client attempts to resolve lyncdiscoverinternal first.
2) DNS record resolves to ISP's website, because they resolve everything and will return their own page if the entry really doesn't exist.
3) Lync client continues to try to connect to the ISP's address, and sits for at least a minute until it eventually falls to the lyncdiscover record.
From the below log entries, you can see that the login process is delayed a full minute due to the client being stuck on the lyncdiscoverinternal record! Again, this does not occur on ISPs that do not catch all DNS resolution
attempts, regardless of validity.

Lync 2013 client is showing EWS not deployed.
Hi,
I am facing issue with lync 2013 client in the configuration information. it is showing EWS not deployed .
UCS Connectivity State; Exchange connection Down; --;
MAPI Information; Status OK;MAPI Status OK;
EWS Information;; EWS not deployed;
I am facing this issue both internally and externally.
I am using Lync 2010 server and exchange 2010.
Lync 2010 client is showing all EWS information correct. No issue with lync 2010 client.
ThanksHad the same issue. Couple of things you can try:
1. Verify EWS virtual directory is configured properly on your Exchange CAS or Front-End servers (Get-WebServicesVirtualDirectory)
But the thing that fixed it for me was:
2. Create SRV records for (_autodiscover, _TCP, 443) pointing to your CAS or Front-End server/array. This has to be done for the forward zone of your public domain name (i.e. contoso.com, not contoso.local). I did them both just
to be on the safe side, but was the public domain that did it. -
Lync 2013-Office Web Access Server-IPAD
I have configured a Office Web App server onto a Windows Server 2012. I was able to upload a PowerPoint from a Lync 2013 client both internally and externally. When I test external access to that PowerPoint from an IPAD using the 2013 clinet,
I am not able to see the PowerPoint. If I VPN into the network from the IPAD it works. There seems to be a problem with my AAR but, like I said my Lync 2013 client works fine though AAR. I can browse to the external url http:\\externalurl\hosting\discovery
and I can see the XML page. I have confirmed that I can ping the internal name on the AAR.
I am using the following pattern us/|^hosting/|^m/|^o/|^oh/|^op/|^p/|^we/|^wv/|^x/).*) in my AAR
Any help would be appreciated. Are you able to access the PowerPoint externally using the desktop Lync client?
If not, check that you are able to access your Web Conferencing ports on your Edge infrastructure. (usually TCP 443 on the webconf.domain.com (or whatever you called it) on the Edge server or TCP 444 if you have only a single IP on your Edge)
The test you've done, shows that you are able to connect to your Office WAC. But if you can't connect to webconf service, this can cause this type of issue - and it's not obvious.

Lync 2013 Clients prompting repeatedly for credentials for calendar data from outlook
Our Exchange server had crashed recently (nothing major) and a reboot of the CAS server resolved the issues. However since then all our domain computers with Lync 2013 clients are prompting for credentials for calendar data from outlook. We would but in
our domain credentials but it still asks. It would sometime ask once a day or sometimes repeatedly throughout the day.
I have look on the forums and tried fixes that included: editing IIS Autodiscover and ESW to use NTLM first , rebuilt lyncs cache in app data etc and none seems to resolve the issue. Any help would be appreciated.
Note: Our Lync 2013 environment is internal only. Only users on domain computers can access the service. We do use a proxy server here for internet but I do not believe Lync is going through the proxy since its internal to our network only. This is NOT happing
to our users with the Lync 2010 client. Please update your Lync client with the latest version.
You can check the following KB:

November 7, 2013 update for Lync 2013 fix the issue Proxy authentication dialog box appears when you sign in to Lync 2013.
