Mac vs. PC differences

I get different results when viewing my form on mac and pc. Form created with Designer 7,0,041126,0 on a PC. Viewing on pc with Acrobat 7.0.8. Viewing on mac with Acrobat 7.0.3. Also, I am new to scripting with FormCalc.
I have two calculated numeric fields named Subtotal_A and Subtotal_D. The following script gives different results, both subtotals show on the pc, only Subtotal_D shows on the mac. This calculation happens when a radio button is pressed (mousedown).
varSubtotal_A = 875.00
Subtotal_A = 875.00
varSubtotal_D = (varSubtotal_A - varSubtotal_B - varSubtotal_C)
Subtotal_D = (varSubtotal_A - varSubtotal_B - varSubtotal_C)
Thanks for any suggestions,
Tim

Performance. None, as long as the machines are similarly powered.
Interface. None while inside CS apps. But to facilitate moving documents between platforms consider sticking to Open Type fonts.
There are differences in how the two OS's use windows and display panels. With two CS3 applications open in Windows and the panels on a second monitor, the user can see both sets of panels which can be rather confusing. I used to open a blank Acrobat document to keep in between the applications to avoid this. The panels are no problem on a Mac, but I have read about Mac users doing the same thing on the main monitor to block out background application windows. These are things you just have to get used to.
There is one thing that I really appreciated when working on a PC, and that was the ability to create folders, rename files, move, copy and paste files all from within the dialogue boxes of the applications. It just makes file management that much simpler when you can make changes right then and there.
Problems. Users that are unfamiliar with Windows and so find the simplest little things confusing, or simply assume it can't be done. Windows may not "feel" as nice, but there is a lot of functionality that is not evident to the casual or new user.
As for technical problems there have been threads complaining about problems with both Leopard and Vista in about equal measures. I have experience with both, though I more or less stick to the Mac now, and I haven't had any real problems on either OS.

  • Does windows or mac make a difference in this scenario?

I work for a small educational institution planning to produce some of its own material into print format. The final products have the following characteristics:
Either small A5 booklets (staple on the spine) or thicker books (perfect/glue bound down the spine)
Either printed in the office (for small batches) or sent to a professional printer (+ binding for large batches)
Content language range from English to Spanish to Chinese.
Content format is mainly bw text (like a novel), with the occasional tables and bw graphics (made by outside graphic designers)
I'm conversant with computers, but have no experience with professional desktop publishing. Here are a few questions in my mind:
Do we really need to invest in InDesign? Our requirement seems to be achievable using Microsoft Word (as it is now) - except I don't know how well Word interacts with printers for large batch printing.
How different would InDesign be on Windows and Mac? Obviously the interface may be different given the characteristics of the OS, but will there be substantial advantage of one OS to another in the professional printing world?
Thanks in advance if you have any advice/opinion/thoughts!
    tim

Understanding that I do work for Adobe (and have for over twenty years) and that I obviously have a vested interest in people buying copies of InDesign, let me take as honest a stab at answering your two major questions:
    (1)     If you have no real experience with professional desktop publishing, you will find a fairly steep learning curve for InDesign and all of its features. It is not a word processor and some things which may be fairly simple to do if you are fairly good with Microsoft Word may seem very difficult in InDesign. Not that they can't be done, but there is more discipline and factors involved in using this type of software. It is oriented towards serving the needs of those who need to design and execute graphically-rich content for professional publication. Yes, you can type a simple "memo" (remember what those were?) in InDesign, but the overhead of doing so especially if you really aren't at all familiar with this type of software can be quite high. At the same time, you could conceivably use Microsoft Word to do some fairly sophisticated publications, but doing so not only tests the limits of that software, but also your patience and willingness to hack around software limitations. In terms of what you describe as large batch printing, my advice would be the same for both Microsoft Word and InDesign. Create a PDF file from the document and then print the resultant PDF file from either Adobe Reader or Acrobat. If you are going to a commercial printer, that printer will probably appreciate a PDF file (fonts embedded of course) as opposed to a bunch of source files, whether they be Word or InDesign.
    (2)     Assuming that you use either OpenType (either TrueType or Adobe Type 1 - CFF flavoured) or TrueType fonts for the document, Windows or Macintosh is fairly irrelevant in terms of how InDesign works, including the vast majority of its user interface. Contrary to what many Macintosh fanboys would have you believe, InDesign (and for that matter, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and other Adobe Creative Suite applications) work at least as well under Windows as on a Macintosh and you can go from one platform to the other without having to learn anything really new. Once the printer has your PDF file, it doesn't make a bit of a difference what platform InDesign was run on!
In conclusion, you actually seem fairly satisfied with your current Word-based workflow and your documents are really not graphically-intensive. Until such time as you have such needs and the time to learn InDesign, you might be best off staying with Word. For printing from either Word or InDesign, I most strongly recommend that you create a PDF file and print from that. The PDF file should be in logical page order, single copy. Any imposition or booklet-making should be done either in Acrobat/Reader or at the print device itself.

  • Mac/PC GUI Differences

I am not too sure if there is some sort of property that is supposed to let me correct this, or if it's just a bug, but at school, I program on a MAC using Visual Cafe. It puts the menubar up at the top of the screen (like all menubars are on MACs). When I take my .java files home and work on them (JDK 1.2.2), and I re-compile, it throws the menubar at the top of my frame (like Windows apps do). My program is an image viewer/converter so it is important to have the windows the correct size. Please help me figure this one out.

I'm not too su re if you've already done (or thought of) this, but you could consider using an MDI interface style. One way to accomplish this, would be to keep the menubar at the top of your primary frame and use a JDesktop (in that primary frame) with the images as JInternalFrames. That would be one way of handling it, if you aren't opposed to SWING or are able to do it on a MAC (never tried on a MAC, sounds cool!)...

  • Mac/Unix path differences causing linking problems?

At our organization, we have a single monster Xserve running Mac OS X 10.6.7 and Aqua Connect where up to 15 users log in concurrently with different UI sessions and work on pages using InDesign CS3 and CS5.
Each user mounts the same AFP sharepoints ("PageShare" for .indd files, and "ImageShare" for page resources) at the same time and they work on neighboring files.
Things have been (mostly) peachy for a year now.
Recently, we've been running into trouble linking images on pages.
The first user who connects has absolutely no trouble. But every subsequent user is unable to automatically link resources on pages.
Curiously, when we attempt to relink a resource, its path as shown in InDesign's Links pallete doesn't change. What was originally reported as a broken link is now considered legitimate.
We're fairly certain this is caused by a mixup between the Mac OS file path (ImageShare:Logos:logo.eps) vs. the UNIX file path (/Volumes/ImageShare/Logos/logo.eps). When multiple instances of a sharepoint are mounted at the same time, a "-#" is appended to the share's UNIX path. In this example case, /Volumes/ImageShare-1, /Volumes/ImageShare-2, etc.
But, the Mac OS file path does not change, even if multiple instances are mounted at the same time — the other users' shares are ignored. The share you have access to is always referenced by the system as "ImageShare".
So, there's a real miscommunication in InDesign between what style path to use and what path is actually displayed. Mucking around in a hex editor, it seems that InDesign includes both Mac OS and UNIX file paths in .indd files, but the Links pallete only displays Mac OS paths...
Is there a way to get InDesign to exclusively follow Mac OS paths which won't change from mount to mount, or is there a way to be more resilient in resolving link changes when the UNIX path has an appended number?
From all I've read and studied, it seems that the workflow we've been using and enjoying for the better part of a year (up to last Wednesday) is somehow impossible. I'm pretty sure it existed though...and I'd like to have it back.
Any thoughts you have would be appreciated.

The Aqua Connect server is a small, yet important, part of our production (so yes, we're properly licensed).
Generally, pages worked on through our multiple-use server are then passed to others to work on. These other users operate individual workstations. A requirement of this workflow is that the Aqua Connect server use the same paths and links as our other users do. Our non-remote users are happily linking away without this issue, as is the initially-connected remote user.
The server was rebooted on Wednesday as we end up doing about once a week. No other changes were made (as far as I can tell, of course).
I've found that no matter what user mounts an AFP/SMB volume (even root), other users cannot access its contents. The Computer window in Finder shows each mounted instance of each sharepoint, but only one of each share for each user can actually be opened by that user. This has been the case since at least Leopard (if not earlier).

  • HT4928 Mac App Store Difference?

If you buy an app on your mobile device like an iPhone, do you still have to buy the same app again on your iMac's App Store? I'm asking this because i noticed that all of my paid apps on IOS arent available for me to download on OS without having to buy it again.

The apps for iDevices are different than the Mac version and will need to be purchased separately.

  • Experience Scanning with Acrobat 9 on a Mac

Friends asked for a copy of a 4-page document we'd used in a study group.  I'll just scan it in with Acrobat!  Then we have the benefits of its being electronic.  Plus it'll give me a chance to try out Acrobat 9, which I just got, and scanning on my Mac (on Windows until recently).
Why it took me an hour to scan the document:
Acrobat can assemble a PDF file from scanned pages and OCR it.  I'll just scan in this four page doc and send it out as PDF.  Simple, right?
Bring up the Acrobat panel to Create PDF From Scanner, and it says to select a scanner.  There are none on the list.  Hmm.
When I set up my Mac a few weeks ago I tested and was able to scan.  Maybe it's because my printer/scanner is now plugged in via TimeCapsule rather than directly as before.  Can my Mac see it?  How do I know?  Can it see the printer device--perhaps both printer and scanner don't come online at the same time.  Bring up Sys Prefs, it shows a green light by the TimeCapsule-connected printer.  Ah, but it did that yesterday even though it could NOT print to it.  Bring up the Print Queue for that printer and click Utility.   ...scanning for printers...found none.  Do I believe that?  Try printing to it.  It works.  Finding none doesn't mean it isn't working.
Try plugging the printer/scanner directly into the Mac.  No difference.
Follow the "maybe scan is different from printing" thought.  Where is the System Prefs for Scan/Fax?  Doesn't seem to be one.  Maybe it's just TWAIN drivers.  How was it I tested scanning initially?  Search [Finder] for scanner.  Nothing obvious.  Futz around a bit.  Ah, it was Image Capture.
Image Capture CAN see the scanner.  So I could scan in by hand to separate files and assemble in Acrobat.  Sure would be easier if Acrobat had control of the scanner as it [presumably] knows more about what it needs re scan settings.  Search Internet for problem.  Aha, found it on the third hit.  The Epson TWAIN (scan) driver must not be Universal binary.  Acrobat sees only Mac Universal binaries.
Check Adobe documentation to see if there's a way around this.  None found.  They don't even acknowledge the Universal binary requirement when talking about Mac.
So, scan separate pages using Image Capture.  Ahh.  The document's printed on really thin paper so type from the back side is bleeding through, badly.  How can I adjust the contrast on the scanner to compensate?  Nothing obvious.  What if I tell Image Capture it's Text?  No, that just seems to change Bit Depth to 1.  Changing it back to 8 causes the Document type to be Photo.  Well, at least there's a setting for B&W Photo.
Scan to TIFF files (the default).  Go into Acrobat and create a PDF from the four TIFFs.  Run OCR.  Hmm.  Still looks awful because of bleed through in image--OCR just adds invisible (selectable, searchable) text on top, without discarding image--and file size is rather large.  It's good enough, but now I'm curious as I've had better results with this in the past with Acrobat 8 on Windows, though it's been so long I can't remember exactly how.
Back to the Internet to read about OCR in Acrobat 9.  Ahh.  I think they phased out the previous method I used and replaced it with "ClearScan", a new technology which creates Type 3 approximation fonts on the fly and places those visible on top with the scanned image, greatly compressed (and de-skewed) underneath.  They recommend scanning at 300 dpi (I'd used whatever the default was, 150 I think).
OK.  Try scanning again.  Set to 300 dpi.  Hmm.  Must be SOME way to change the contrast to correct the bleed through.  Ahh.  It's set to "Image Correction: None".  I'd missed that before--my bad.  Try "Manual".  I get a control panel.  No contrast but I can affect brightness separately in Dark, Midtones, and Light.  Turning up Light does it.  Scan all the pages again.  Bleed through is gone (as seen in Preview windows that pop up).
Go into Acrobat and recreate the PDF from the TIFFs.  Well, it won't let me see the files.  I scanned them into /tmp.  (I've set up a symlink of /tmp to /FinderVisibleRoot/tmp (along with other hidden / dirs).)  tmp is greyed out though not others in that dir.  Futz around a bit trying other operations which open a file panel, come back, and now tmp's not greyed out.  Sigh.
Create the PDF from the TIFFs.  Looks exactly like before, bleed through and all.  WTF?  Check the TIFFs in Preview--as expected; no bleed through.  Perhaps something got cached.  Close and restart Acrobat and try again.  Same result.
The Image Capture adjustment to Brightness must not have changed the actual scan but some meta data stored in the TIFF. ??
Where can I tell Acrobat to honor that?  There are no options when I open files to be combined to create the PDF.  "Try again, Luke."   Nope.
Let's try just one file at a time with Create PDF From File.  Same problem.  The files panel for opening those files DOES have a Settings... button, but it's greyed out.  It's set to "All Types", which includes TIFF.  What if I change it to just TIFF?  AHA!!  Now the Settings... button is active.  Not obvious to me (I get why, given multiple types could be selected, but my gosh).
Now I can control how Acrobat changes the incoming TIFFs (I'm guessing PDF doesn't support TIFF directly so converts to JPEG, CCITT, etc.).  Not exactly sure how conversion works so futz with a few of what I imagine are the obvious options.  No effect.  Hmm.
Ah.  Maybe Image Capture (or the driver) is actually creating a color profile to affect the image adjustments I made, and embedding that in the TIFF.  Can color profiles be put in TIFFs?  I didn't think so.  Turns out they can.  And retaining embedded profiles was turned on in the conversion settings by default for all image types EXCEPT greyscale. :-)  Turn it on for greyscale and try again.  Voila!
OK.  Go back to Merge Files Into Single PDF to do all the pages.  Oops.  There's no Settings... option where I can tell it to keep the embedded profiles.  Sigh.  Use Create PDF From File for each page then merge those.
Now run OCR with ClearScan on the resulting PDF, and keep only very low resolution of original scan.  Result is a small (196K for 4 pg), clean looking, fully searchable document!
The on-the-fly Type 3 fonts it created aren't great (flaws visible when zoomed).  I think an older technology we had at Adobe of trying to match scanned chars to available fonts stands a better chance for high fidelity (and this may still be avail in a non-ClearScan option).  However, I still like the new ClearScan technology for some uses like this, where fidelity isn't such an issue.
Hopefully, the Universal binary problem on Mac with Acrobat will go away at some point (when I get a new printer? ) so I'll just be able to scan directly into PDF.  And Adobe will need to add Settings for Merge Files Into A Single PDF to control color profile handling, etc.
Thanks to all the Adobe forum folk whose posts informed me for this task.
    --Dan

When I posted the message, it showed me "More Like This" with some relevant threads.  Relevance was pretty cool.
I read there are Acrobat app-wide conversion settings for importing different file types.  If I set Preferences/Convert To PDF/TIFF settings, it affects files specified to Merge Files Into A Single PDF.  It's still inconsistent that I specify it one way for Create PDF From File and another for Merge Files Into A Single PDF, but at least it can be done.

  • Mac lost contact with HP color Laserjet 3700 via USB

    Hi,
Since a few days I can't get connection anymore with my HP color Laserjet 3700 via USB-cable. My Mac recognizes the printer with its name, also states when I plug in the USB that the printer is online. However, when I want to print documents, it states "wait until the printer is available" and no prints are generated.
Via an iMAC, I tried to print via the same USB cable, and that works fine. I tried rebooting, software updates, all the lot. Nothing worked. I found some technical details via About this MAC and the difference between my MacBook en iMAC is:
PPD-version = 16.4 on the iMAC and 17.3 on my MacBook
CUPS-version = 1.4.4 on the iMAC and 1.4.5 on my MacBook Pro
Who has any ideas what I can do the get printing again?
    Thx,
    Aldert

Via other threads I found the solution:
    see: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2640270&start=15&tstart=0
I had the same problem "Waiting for printer to become available... " - HP LaserJet 2500 L with iMAC 11.1 running Mac OS X Version 10.6.5. since the "HP Printer Software Update 2.5.2".
    This also helped for me:
    1) delete all of the items whose name starts with "hp_" in System/Library/Extensions
    2) Disconnect the printer and turn off the printer
    3) delete the printer if it's still there
    4) reset the printing system
    5) restart the Mac
    6) empty the trash
    7) turn on the printer and reconnect the printer to the MAC
    8) reinstall the printer

  • Mac .app projector oddities

    Hello.
I have a project that was working fine with the .hqx
projector files on the Mac. We'd drop them onto the Mac to unstuff
the file and the resulting player worked great locally as well as
via a DVD. With Flash CS3, we do the same thing with the .app
folder, however, on the Mac (OSX) desktop, the app doesn't play
with several attempts. However, after burning the project to a DVD
with Toast, the app works fine on the desktop. It only works after
    the DVD is burned, however.
The only explanation I could find from Adobe thus far was due
to the path requirement on a Mac needing to be colon-based
    (drivename:path:sub-path) versus slash-based
    (drivename\path\sub-path). I'm assuming that isn't a requirement on
the DVD but doesn't explain why the app doesn't play on the desktop
initially and then works fine after the project has been burned to
    DVD.
My biggest concern is with older Macs and if the .app process
will play fine from DVD on those computers. Is there a minimum
system requirement for this new projector? (e.g., Intel-based, OS8,
etc?) And, if there is any problem with older Macs, will I have to
drop my files back to Flash 8 to export an .hqx file to fix that
    problem?
Thank you for any assistance with this.

Some additional information that I found out...
The .app file seems to be corrected somehow when a DVD is
burned. We tried Intel-based and pre-Intel-based Macs with no
difference in the ability for the original .app playing. However,
each time the DVD is burned, the player on the Mac desktop works as
expected. So, I'm trying to determine at this point what would
change to allow the project on the desktop to be playable. It works
for the duration, even with the DVD out of the drive. When the
project is removed and a new version is dropped to the desktop, the
    new version won't play.
We never had this problem on previous Flash versions because
the .hqx file was unstuffed on the Mac. I'm thinkin' the current
problem is due to the fact that the original project was published
on a PC, put up on the network and then dropped to a Mac.
    Anyone else experienced this?

  • Is JDeveloper production ready for the mac?

    Hi
I have a macbook pro (dual core, 4 gb of ram, OS 10.6.3), and I am trying to start developing webcenter applications in JDeveloper. I am using version 11.1.1.3.0, with the webcenter extension installed, but I cannot really work with this.
    Problems include:
Crashes (several this morning), being very slow, taking ages to deploy even the simplest applications, huge CPU and memory usage (100% and >1000MB) and a lot of errors with the weblogic server, including an unreachable console and taking forever to load a simple application.
I have followed the official installation procedures (including defaulting to Java 6, making a symbolic link to classes.jar).
In its current state I cannot use JDeveloper for any real work. So my questions are:
Is JDeveloper considered usable for production on the Mac, and does anybody have any useful tips to improve?

    Hi Jesse,
I have been using 11.1.1.2.0 for a few months now, so the following comments apply to that release.
Everyday I use jdev and adf on my macbook pro. I also have a PC set up with the environment so I can compare. It crashes a little more often on my mac, but the difference is not catastrophic as if you are used to work with adf/jdev, your used to a few crashes here and there.
Here is a post I followed to install the environment http://jipp-jipp.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2009-11-18T12%3A35%3A00-08%3A00 which is mainly a reference to a post from Andrejus http://andrejusb.blogspot.com/2008/10/jdeveloper-11g-production-on-mac-os.html
For the memory usage it is normal for jdev to use more than 1GB gb, and from my experience it keeps on requisitioning more as time go by so I restart jdev a few times a day.
    Good luck
    JP

  • Mac to buy or not to buy

is it worth buying a mac book? I know this us a support discussion so um asking for just that. I have a pc w/ vista. Its a year old compaq. Use it mostly for school n entertainment. How does it compare to a mac book. I'm looking at the one that is 1099. Pc vs mac what major differences? Pros n cons of it. Anyone think mac is over hyped? Software? Pls be honest n response. Thanks in advance

well lets see where to start. well you say you have a compaq running vista, comparing that to a macbook i would say the macbook would be better for entertainment. the macbook is very powerful yet very portable. the macbook includes i life 08 which had itunes(a music software),iphoto(photo editing and storage software), imovie(movie making software),garageband(music making software),idvd(dvd making software),and iweb(website publishing software). these are all included with the macbook when you buy it. A compaq running vista of course dosnt come with all of this great software. including the fact that overall the macbook features MacosX10.5 leopard which is way better than vista in my opinion, id say that a macbook would be the choice for you. well i hope this answer helped a little .

  • Replacing Mac App Data w/ iPad App Data.  Possible?

My question is simple...although I don't know if it's possible.
What I mean by this is my iPad is organized with 4 pages of my apps, in folders etc.  I use my iPad every day, don't use my Mac as much.
What I'm getting at is that I don't sync my iPad with my Mac anymore because it wants to take those 4 pages I have and turn it into 12 pages and install random applications that I downloaded on my iPhone ages ago.
Basically i'm looking to do like the simple mobile me sync feature "REPLACE DATA ON X COMPUTER WITH THIS COMPUTER's DATA"
I don't want all the apps my iTunes library things I want, and when I un-check SYNC APPS in iTunes it just says "You'll erase all apps from your iPad"... not what I'm looking to do.
Thanks in advanced, hope I can get this rectified so I can start syncing movies back and forth.

iTunes on your Mac knows the difference between your iPhone and your iPad.  You can configure it so that it will install only those apps that you want installed on each IOS device.  In fact, I have some that don't load anywhere but I keep them on the Mac just in case I change my mind (it's easier than searching for them at the App Store).
Your iPad must be connected to your Mac in order to configure iTunes to load specific apps.  Wait until it finishes the automatic syncing and then change your settings and force a manual sync.  After that, the auto-sync will work just fine.

  • Power pc  programs of mac pro

hey i am thinking of selling my imac g5 coz i want to be able to have that a builtly to expand and have dual monitors and better graphics cards but i am just wondering i haveloads of power pc programs will they comvert them selfs and run normaly or will i have to buy everything again?
    thanks for reading
    rob

The vast majority of PowerPC applications will work without issue on an Intel Mac. The difference that most encounter is lesser performance. For instance, Photoshop CS2 will perform better on a quad-core PowerMac G5 than a quad-core Mac Pro. This will all change when these applications are released as Universal Binaries.
You are NOT required to upgrade your applications before you are ready to. Unless of course they don't work although these are very few and far between.

  • I lost mail smart folders on iMac after delete them on Mac Air

I lost mail smart folders on iMac after delete them on Mac Air with differents mail accounts.
I don't undestand, I have email accounts totally differents between iMac and Mac Air, I don't know if is an iCloud issue.
When I open Mail on Air I see a lot of smart folders I use on iMac and I thinked of a some old sync mismatch, so I deleted smart folders on Air.
Today when I turn on my iMac I see I lost ol my smart folders, but are differents computers, differents email accounts, one used for work the other at home (gmail).
Of course I have time machine backup but don't know how to restore smart folders.
Please help me, I don't want smart folders be synced beetween differents accounts
    I attach my iCloud settings...

I don't know the answer to your question, but smart folders do not actaually contain messages, just links to messages from other folders. So nothing has actually been lost. Once you recreate the smart folders, you'll see the same mail inside them that you did before.

  • After Effects on Mac

    Hello,
i've a problem. i've installed the same Adobe after effects on my macbook and on a mac pro.
