MacBook DIY RAM Installation = warranty violation?

Hope it's not too rude for me to ask this here since there's no MacBook forum yet...
Since it's apparently so easy to install RAM in the MacBook, I'm awfully tempted to order a pair of 1GB DIMMs in anticipation of a MacBook purchase in the next couple of days. Would I be voiding the warranty and/or my AppleCare agreement if I installed them myself, or would that be totally cool? TIA for your help...

There is a macbook forum now

You would in no way viod your warranty if you instal RAM yourself. It is really the way to go as you can save several hundred dollars on the 2gb configuration.

  • Macbook pro 13" service warranty

Hello. I purchased a 13" Macbook pro from Best Buy back in December of 2012.
Is my Macbook eligible for service @ my local Apple Store without any charges? I haven't yet purchased apple care.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Macs have got a 1-year warranty. You can take the computer to an Apple Store for free without any problem because the MacBook Pro is in warranty. However, when the warranty expires, you will have to pay for all the repairs the computer needs.
If you purchase AppleCare, you will have three years more of warranty, and all the problems you have, except accidents, will be repaired free of charge. Also, you can contact with Apple for free

  • Using 13" Macbook pro ram in a 15" macbook pro

Hey Community I hope everyone is doing well.
I just put my 2009 13" 2.53 ghz macbook pro ram in my new 2011 15" Macbook pro 2.0 ghz.
I bought the 15" with 4 gb of ram so i upgraded it to 8 gb which i had in the 13".
The 15" stock ram has four nodes on it, while the 13" ram has 8 nodes on it. However it was a great fit.
    Now my question:
are there any longevity/performance issues i should be concerned about using this ram?
I'm a heavy ram user in logic studio so the ram is definitely needed, i'm just wondering if i should be concerned enough to buy another 8gb's from crucial.
    Thanks!!!

I apologize guys i didnt even specify the ram that i put in!
The ram is 1066 ghz ddr 3 also purchased from crucial.
The 15" takes 1333MHz. At the very minimum, you are creating a bottleneck. Buy new RAM.

I don't know what service options are available in India but if this helps I do know that once you purchase your Apple product the warranty is valid anywhere in the world.

  • I can't turn off my Macbook pro since installation Mavericks

I can't turn off my Macbook pro since installation Mavericks.  When I push the start/power button, a black screen appears. asa I touch anything, the desktop reappears.  If I push the start/power button long enough, it shuts down, but I cannot keep doing this forever ? What's happening ?  I made sure alle programs/windows quit before trying to turn off...

    Hi Biouche,
the first three days after installing mavericks, the choice window you talk about didn't appear at all. (only that black screen and a forced "turnoff click" (which didn't feel fine to hear ;-)   But !  AFter the first three days, the choice window did appear again, with the choice to switch off/restart/etc.  so evertything back to normal (except, before the installation of mavericks, the choice window appeared already the same second after pushing the start button.  Now, it's like you said, waiting 2 full seconds.  still feels "scary", but anyway, at least i can turn off the macbook in a normal, safe way again.  So thanks for your reaction , a nice day toU2 ;-)

  • Does Adding Ram To A New MacBook Pro Void The Warranty?

I am considering getting one at the end of the month and this answer will probably help me decide whether to get the 2 gig or 4 gig model.

Not an issue at all. I have upgraded all of my systems, and never have I had an issue with Apple support.

  • Can my macbook's Ram work on a minimac?

Hi I was wondering if the ram that came with my black macbook be used to upgrade a minimac?
    Thanks

If it's an Intel-based Mac mini, then yes you can use it. If it's a PowerPC-based Mac mini, then no, they use a different type of RAM.
However, keep in mind that the RAM on a Mac mini is not a user-installable part. You'll have to have an Apple Authorized Service Provider replace the RAM on the Mac mini or you risk voiding your warranty.

  • Apple has posted MacBook DIY hard drive replacement manual

    topic says it,
Apple has posted the manual for diy hard drive replacement for the MacBook at <http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook13inch_HardDriveDIY.pdf>
guess that settles whether you would void your warranty, doesn't it?

Yes, that's the "official word" we've been waiting for. Installing a hard drive yourself will not void your warranty. However, just like the RAM, unless you are an Apple Authorized Service Provider, any damage you do to your MacBook in the process of changing the hard drive will not be covered by the warranty or AppleCare Protection Plan.

  • Updating Macbook Pro RAM

Having just finished installing my MacBook Pro 4GB RAM (replacing the standard issue 2GB), would just like to offer a few tips that I wish I had known before starting to do this.
    1) The RAM memory door is held down by three screws. It is HIGHLY recommended that you use a Phillips 00 screwdriver. The screws are made of cheap metal, and if you try with anything that doesn't fit, you end up with stripped screws, i.e. the screw metal gets distorted and even if you try again with the right screwdriver, the screw will not turn.
    2) If you do happen to have one screw left that you can not get out, as a LAST option, you can try swiveling the door back and forth until the metal loosens (bends) enough so that you can rotate the door / remove the door to be able to replace the RAM. This will generally result in a messed up memory door (at the site of the stripped screw). Best that you consult Apple Store / Apple specialists before doing this "brute force" method.

Apple sells RAM, and you can have the store install it for you. It's an all or nothing arrangement, and you pay them for both the product and the installation. You can save money both on the RAM and the installation costs by DIY.
Apple does not oppose upgrading as long as they do it and sell you the RAM. They do not recommend DIY options, although they consider both as "authorized."
I don't make a recommendation with respect to memory products as all three are fine. OWC is best for the SSDs in my opinion. They guarantee Mac compatibility.
MBPs have only two slots, so you cannot increase memory to 8 GBs and also keep the other modules. You will be replacing both modules. However, you will be happy to learn that you can install two 8 GB modules for 16 GBs:
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
If you get the DataDoubler bracket from OWC you could install the HDD by replacing the optical drive. I've done this in several of my notebooks. OWC includes the required tools.

  • Macbook 2007 ram upgrade

    Hi,
Searching this site.. its hard to find a basic answer for i think a simple question. which is NOT in the user manual.
I have a late 2007 macbook (black, intel duo 2 core, 2,1) which comes with 1 GB RAM.
I would like to upgrade to 2 or 4GB. i understand the 2 slots need to be match or upgraded with same ram. i.e. 2x1GB or 2x2GB.
I need to know which RAM to buy, as there are many varieties and asking a sales person might nit always give the correct answer.
What model no of RAM do i need.? RAM speed and RAM capacity?
    is it simple?
    Thanks and cheers,
    Jerry

You mac requires the following type of ram:
200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  You can install 4gb and slightly over 3gb will be addressed.  Look for ram with a good warranty.  Do not purchase ram from a retail store.  You are better off getting it from an online vendor such as Crucial.com or macsales.com.

  • Help regarding a macbook 2gb RAM HELP!

hey guys, i am 15 and i am really getting interested in graphic design and video editing (aka photoshop and imovie). I have used PC's all my life but i think it is finally time to jump to the real deal, a Mac. Specifically a MacBook. Now my question is, is this a good deal or no on 2gb of RAM on ebay.
    http://cgi.ebay.ca/2GB-DDR2-OPTIVAL-RAM-MEMORY-APPLE-MACBOOK-13-SPECIAL_W0QQitem Z180012522054QQihZ008QQcategoryZ80037QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
    ^^^(copy and paste whole thing)
so is this a good piece of RAM or is it junk?
also, will this fit in a MacBook and/or should i buy a different brand? if so, from where?
    thanks alot for any help.
    Chris

I wouldn't take the risk of buying RAM from an eBay vendor. You ask a very relevant question -- "is this a good piece of RAM or is it junk?" -- and with a no-name vendor, nobody is likely to be able to tell you.
Many people can answer that question for a whole bunch of known, reputable vendors.
Some good choices in the US include OtherWorld Computing and Small Dog Electronics; scan the discussions on this forum for many, many others.
Macs can be touchy about RAM, and the few dollars you might save buying from an eBay vendor simply aren't worth the risk.
Buy from a reputable, known vendor who will stand behind their product and offer a warranty.

  • Mac Mini (mid 2010) horizontal screen flicker after new RAM installation

Hi, trying to help someone fix their mid 2010 mac mini here.
The model he bought came with 4GB of RAM; but he upgraded and put 8GB of RAM in. (the kingston variety KVR1066D3D4R7S/4GI 4GB DDR3-1066 I think)
Before the RAM there were no display problems, after installation small horizontal lines of flickering would appear around every minute or so. The screen is a Samsung 2333 Syncmaster connected via the mini display adaptor.
We've tried the display and adaptor in a Macbook Pro late 2008 and no problems so we think we've eliminated that variable. We've just gone through the screen calibration in Sys Prefs and we're still seeing if that's fixed it. We'll also try adjusting the refresh rate but we're doubtful.
    Any ideas?

Apple support advised me to use RAM sold by Apple ($400 for 8GB).
I have 2x4GB hynix modules (by the way I had hynix stock modules in my mini) and if I mix 4GB(not Apple) and 1GB(Apple) it works just fine. It's obvious that 2 different modules won't work in dual channel BUT Xbench shows no difference in performance in any configuration. I tested different configurations: 2x4GB(not apple memory), 2x1GB(stock modules), 1Gb+4GB(stock and non stock) all of them show very similar performance +/- 3%.
This mean that mac mini doesn't use dual-channel memory mode (( There's also a chance that Xbench shows wrong results regarding RAM performance but to me, it seems very unlikely.

  • Macbook Pro RAM

    hello guys,
    need your suggestion
is the MacBook Pro Mid 2012 upgradable to SSD drives?
and tell me which is the best brand RAM i can buy ,is it safe to go for 3rd party RAM and what should i be careful on buying these 3rd party like ram pin size or something ?
i have seen apple uses HYNIX RAM's which comes out of the box.
    thanks in advance
    Peace

    NJ29,
yes, the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro models can be upgraded to have an internal SSD drive.
You can use third-party RAM as long as it meets the requirement for your model. If you plan on owning your MacBook Pro for several years, then you might consider OWC’s RAM, since it has a lifetime advance replacement warranty. Their RAM for a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro can be found here.

  • Upgrades to Late 2011 MacBook Pro (RAM, etc.)

I have a new, late 2011 MacBook Pro, and I was wondering about certain upgrades...namely, RAM and graphics.
To start off, here are the specs:
    2.5 GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
    4 GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
    750 GB Serial ATA @ 7200 rpm
    AMD Radeon HD 6770M
    Intel HD Graphics 3000
I run some pretty resource-intensive programs like Photoshop, Logic Pro, and Final Cut Pro X. Programs like iTunes, Chrome, and Transmission are almost always running too.
I also do some gaming like Starcraft 2, which as some of you may now, is very demanding at high settings (when I do run SC 2 though, or other games, I shut down all other applications).
You may be thinking that if high-end performance is my main concern, a Mac Pro would be more appropriate. And I agree. But this new computer however, is a CRU. It's a long story, but Apple basically gave it to me (early xmas gift, I guess!), so I'm trying to see what I can get out of it.
I know that the 2011 MBP's are capable running 16GB of RAM, and OWC offers this upgrade for a reasonable price. Now, this upgrade doesn't void warranty, correct (my cursory research shows that it does not) ? Secondly, do you think this upgrade is worth it? I know that in Logic Pro, for example, DSP plug-ins and such can eat up RAM, so I certainly wouldn't mind more resources at my disposal in that regard.
As far as gaming is concerned, my understanding is that RAM upgrades will not help much, but then again, it certainly won't make it worse (By the way, do RAM upgrades increase virtual memory?). I believe that gaming performance is very often bottlenecked with the graphics card(s). Can those be upgraded on a MacBook Pro?
    Thanks

we are not allowed to speculate much if any in this forum
Actually, the Terms of Use really only prohibits the following with respect to speculation:
Speculations or rumors about unannounced products.
Discussions of Apple policies or procedures or speculation on Apple decisions.
At some point, folks just started saying that "speculation" in general is not permitted, but they actually have only a fairly narrow area that they don't want us to discuss.
