MacBook only types in symbols

tried to restart my computer and can't even type password... How did I turn on symbols only and how do I turn it off?

This has happened to me as well. If you hold down the function key, it will work but it also makes it almost impossible to type correctly. I have seen this in several forums but no one has a fix. There is a fix for regular windows laptops but not for the mac. I am lost because this is the only computer in my home at the moment. still searchin on the internet, hoping for a fix. Mainly everyone is saying that one of the alt keys is stuck. I have tried every combination and none work

  • Macbook Keyboard Only Types Weird Symbols

Yesterday my macbook all of a sudden started typing only weird symbols. Every key pressed provides these weird symbols. I have searched for answers on how to fix this but none seem to work:
I have plugged in an external keyboard and that works, so it isn't the OS/software, it is the laptops keyboard.
I have cleaned the "alt keys" in case they were sticking.
I have checked my preferences and the US American Flag is selected.
I am completely open to starting from scratch and resetting the entire system but it doesn't appear to be a solution to this problem.
Any help would be appreciated. I can bring it into a apple store but was hoping I could figure it out through here first.
    Thank you.

    Odd!
Has anything been spilled on the computer at any point in time? Are you under warranty?
I missed the bit about the external keyboard working. You may have a hardware issue that needs repair or replacement.
If you computer has a removable battery, save your work, connect the AC adapter then remove the battery. Does the keyboard still act strangely with the keyboard removed?

OK. I'm getting you moved to the forum for newer iMacs. The smartest person in the world would have trouble with the non-intuitive labeling for some of these forums! You have an Intel iMac; this forum covers pre-Intel iMacs that were discontinued in 2006.
I think someone can help you there much faster and better than can I.

  • Macbook Pro only writes in symbols.. now i can't sign in!

I've had my macbook pro for almost 2 years now. I always go on it right before I got to bed, which is what i did last night. When i woke up this morning, i opened up my macbook and tried to type a website into firefox, and it would only type in symbols!
I checked my language settings in System Preferences, and it said that it would update my settings after I restarted the computer. When I did that, clearly the language settings weren't my problem because they didn't fix anything. Now, I can't even sign back into my computer!
I tried doing the thing where you press command + S at the same time to make a new password, but when it would come up, i wasn't able to type anything. I would press keys and nothing would come up on the screen that i was typing.
Please please please... someone help me!!

Yes, åß∂ƒ©, is what I get when I type. Is there any way to fix the alt button myself, or is my only option going to the genius bar or getting a wireless keyboard?
and no, I have not messed with any of the system fonts.

  • MY MACBOOK KEYBOARD ONLY TYPES IN CAPITAL LETTERS

my macbook keyboard only types in capial letters

And you posted here with a different computer?
...If not, does the Caps shift around by itself?
Are you using an external keyboard at the same time
and if so, was the Shift key locked on it? You can
choose to set Keyboard settings to ignore input from
the internal keyboard or trackpad, not sure on external.
    {Or have you posted with a USB external keyboard?}
I'm presuming the issue is not as obvious as the lighted
'Caps Lock key' that shifts this function on/off. There
may be something sticking in the MacBook keyboard
or perhaps it has some kind of defect issue going on.
    Good luck & happy computing!

    Welcome to the discussion area!
Just a hunch. The Sony and iBook may not be able to handle WPA2 Personal Security, which is the default Security setting of the Time Capsule.
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Change the setting for Wireless Security to WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Update to save settings
    Any luck?

You can try resetting the SMC and PRAM.

However, I suspect that the milk is causing some keys to show full or partial pressing and that is interfering with signals from other key pressings.
I suspect yo need to to clean/replace the internal KB
    Try fixing it yourself

Download RecBoot and see if that will kick it into recovery mode, so your computer sees it and you can do a restore.

  • MY MACBOOK ONLY WORKS WITH CAPS LOCK ON HOW CAN I FIX THIS?

I CAN ONLY TYPOE IN ALL CAPS. IF I TURN CAPS OFF AND PRESS NUMBERS IT WILL TYPE OUT SYMBOLS, IF I HIT DELETE THE SAME WILL HAPPEN AND IT WILL TURN ON CAPS LOCK. IF I HIT THE VOLUME CONTROLS IT CLOSES AND OPENS RANDOM APPS. HELP ME PLEASE.

Have you spilled anything on your keyboard? Sounds to me like your ALT key is stuck on. It's possible that the key is just stuck down, but if there's liquid damage, you may need a new keyboard unit.

  • Apple wireless keyboard only types caps

Found this on several other discussions but it was the first time it had happened to me.
Using an Apple wireless keyboard with a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, 15", non-retina display. All had been fine but all of a sudden the wireless keyboard would only type caps. Hitting the cap lock button turned the light on and off but the keystrokes would produce nothing but caps. Additionally, clicking a link in web pages would only add the link to the reading list, instead of going to the link. Not sure if it is related or not but I suspect it is.
Tried several things found in other discussions - replacing batteries, restarting, repaired permissions and the like. Even trashed the cashes folder prior to a restart. This allowed the keyboard to respond correctly but only for a couple seconds, then it reverted to all caps again.
What fixed it for me (as you can see I am now typing in upper and lower case) was disconnecting the wireless keyboard via the Bluetooth menu in the menu bar, a suggestion I saw on another page. Don't delete it, just use the disconnect function, wait about 10 seconds then reconnect via the same menu.
So far so good, but I also just noticed that the shift key was stuck in the depressed position. Not sure how it got that way but I suppose that could have been part of the issue although I never saw anything like mentioned in other discussions.

If the wireless keyboard is still under warranty call tech support.  Let them deal w/it.

  • I have 2 macbooks each with an account for me and one for my wife. I use one Macbook logged in with my account and my wife uses the other Macbook only loged in on her account. We both make regular time-machine back-ups each on a separate external disk

I have 2 Macbooks each with an account for me and one for my wife. I use one Macbook logged in with my account and my wife uses the other Macbook only logged in on her account. We both make regular time-machine back-ups each on a separate external disk. Is it possible to update her account on my macbook using her external disk without overwriting my stuff on the same Macbook and vice versa?

Time Machine does not do individual accounts. It records the complete drive. So if you were to use her TM backup on your Mac it would make your Mac just like hers. Both yours and her account on your MAC.
Just copy the missing files over from her Mac to yours. If there are differennt programs on each then they would need to be installed on both.

When I get to the login page on my macbook, I type in my password and it starts to load, but then the screen turns blue and it goes back to the login.
Iv tryed this numerious times still keeps going back to pasword. Can not get any further. Tried restart holding shift key.. still nothing. What do i do?

    Thank you for your help.
I couldnt get to the hard drive/ desktop. Soft login not even working. So i could not do any of that.
In the end i took it to Apple and its actually the hard drive on its way out. A common issue with that series of Mac. Funny seeing i dont use this mac much. However being 2.5 years old and out of warrently, Apple have recognise this issue with this series/ Model and installing a new hard drive at no cost.
Very luck and greatful. And not feeling so dumb that it was something i did or could troubleshoot myself.
Hope this helps others that it just might be your hard drive failing.

    Go to Geekbench
    http://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks
and check out the relative values for the system you're currently using versus the one you're going to buy. My guess is a fullly spec'd MBP Retina will do the job, but you're undoubtedly better qualified than anyone on here to tell what kind of a machine you need.
