MacBook Pro Retina (15") intermittant freeze connecting firewire drive to Thunderbolt adapter

Since having my MacBook Pro Retina (15") I have been having intermittant (often only have 5 days or so) hard freeze on connecting firewire 800 drives to it via the thunderbolt adapter.  This occurs with both powered  (LaCie 2gb) and unpowered (Iomega GO 1gb) drives.  After the last few times I tried connecting the thunderbolt adapter and then plugging in the drive (rather than having the firewire cable already plugged into the adapter and then plugging the adapter in).  I was able to reproduce a hard freeze after nothing happened when the adapter alone was plugged in, plugging in the powered drive caused an immediate freeze.
By a hard freeze I mean that when the system reboots it doesn't even recognise a crash occured.  There was no kernel panic screen.
I plug into these drives at least once a day but it usually takes up to a week before the freeze occurs.  I have had no trouble with leaving the unpowered drive cnnected during sleep it appears to be when I change drives.  I always unplug the adapter and make sure the computer is still running before putting to sleep and make sure it is functioning properly after wake before connecting the drive.
Using USB 2.0 there have been no problems with the same drives.
Any ideas?

I believe this issue is caused by bad ground coupling between the two devices, some of the induced charge can spark between connectors in the thunderbolt port causing computer to basicly freeze.
To solve this issue try touching the connectors outside metal part to your macbooks body first to discharge it, then while plugging int the connector do it at slight angle so the metal of the connector touches Mac's body.
This method has been working for me.

    Hi Auracles1,
Here's a pretty discussion regarding wireless printing with this device and a Mac.

I have a similar OfficeJet and it was a multi-step process. (1) Install printer drivers on the machine, (2) Add the printer queue in print & fax, (3) Run the "setup wizard" from the disc for wireless printing.

  • Macbook Pro Retina (15") can't connect to wireless mouse and external USB keyboard

    Hi All,
I got my new MacBook Pro Retina (15 inch) about 3 weeks ago. It works fine. I got a 30" Dell screen that I am using via thunderbolt/usb adapter. Also, I am using a thunderbolt ethernet adapter. Both adapters work fine without any problems.
I have an apple usb keyboard connected to the USB hub of the screen, as well as my iphone cable. It is a regular, full size apple keyboard. In addition to this, I have a logitech nano connected directly to the right usb port of the macbook pro.
This setup was working well until a few days ago. I lost connectivity with my mouse. Initially, I thought the batteries are empty. After replacing them, I still had no connection (again, the usb receiver is *directly* connected to the macbook).
I changed a few cables here and there and noticed that I can get either the keyboard to work or the mouse but not both at the same time. A reboot did not help.
Did anybody encounter such a strange problem already? If so, what could I possibly do?
    Thank You,
    --Martin

    Hello nikkig00,
It is certainly difficult to use the computer if your wireless keyboard and mouse do not connect.  I found a few resources I recommend for this issue.
I recommend reviewing this article first:
Troubleshooting wireless mouse and keyboard issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3048
If the issue persists, I recommend reviewing the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the article below.  Step 9 specifically stands out to me for the issue you described:
    9. Restart your computer
Sometimes a simple restart of your Mac is all it takes to get things running smoothly again. You may also want to try resetting your computer's PRAM and NVRAM.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Mouse/Keyboard freeze

    Hi there,
I have a 2013 macbook pro retina that's less than a month old. I have experienced a number of trackpad/mousepad freeze issues while using the computer. They occurred in close succession while using 10.93. I update to 10.94 and had not experienced the problem again since then(a week or more) but today it crashed. this is a big problem as i am a dj and use this laptop to play live gigs. I was hoping that you could help me isolate the problem. What happens is I will be working away and suddenly the mouse will freeze and the computer will become unresponsive, the keyboard doesn't work except for the power button.... also, the desktop background disappears upon forced restart.... any ideas? what may be causing this? Thanks in advance, Richard

If your machine is less than a month old, you should use your warranty and call AppleCare (you have 90 days of phone support) or take your machine back to the Apple Store (make an appointment with the Genius Bar first) and let them deal with the issue.
If yours is the 13" model, there is a thread on here (somewhere) about trackpad and keyboard failures when also using Bluetooth, I think (don't quote me on that - I don't have the affected machines so I don't follow the thread too closely).
But I do believe that Apple is aware of the issue and had 'fixed' it in either a patch preceding 10.9.4 or in 10.9.4 itself.
    Give them a call...

  • Macbook Pro Retina Mountain lion freezes after deep sleep

    Hello All,
I am having a strange problem with my MacBook Pro Retina, Mid 2012 (Mountain Lion 10.8.3). Since about January time It keeps crashing after I put it into a deep sleep. After closing the lid - waiting for 1 hour or so - then reopening the lid, i get presented with the normal Apple login screen (breifly) and then it crashes and i get a grey screen saying my mac has had an issue and it needs to restart.
When i log back on i get an error message that I can send onto Apple and then my Mac carries on as normal. Very weird.
I have searched these forums, been into the Apple store, spoken to Apple done hardware diagnostics, reinstalled the OS (worked breifly then stopped working again) - so i assume its one of the programs or bits of hardware that i use (which i have tried to isolate/remove)- but i am still strugling to solve these issues.
It would be great if someone could give me some advice around:
    1. Where I can find these log files/error messages, etc.
    2. Understanding what it is causing this issue.
    Thanks in advance.

The solution is to dump the 100€ mini-display port DVI-D adapter that apple sells and buy a mini-Display to Display-Port cable for 6€. No crashes, no annoying interruption of the display (which I had several times the day for 2 or 3 seconds). There are very short interruptions now, but it is much better than with the apple adapter. The apple adapter needs a USB port, which is not necessary with the simple cable.
As for the monitor: Burn In, otherwise great. The burn in can be erased via monitor menu but should not be there in the first place.
    Hope this helps.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 2013 will freeze if waked from long sleep if left with open lid

    Hello!
    Have a strange problem.
My new MacBook Pro Retina 13 will not wake from sleep state if left with open lid for a long period of time. (8-12 hours)
Ship happens ONLY in this case and only if left with open lid.
Screen lights up, I see a user window with password invitation - but no mouse pointer is present and keyboard doesn't respond and the apple on the backside of the lid is light up even if I close the lid.
TimeCapsule backups are creted during sleep state, no other malfunctions detected during use - laptop funtions normally from any side except this problem

    Solved.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 2013 15" freezes when using safari

I have a 2013 MacBook Pro Retina 15" 2.7ghz, 16gb Ram with 512 gb SSD.  Since the recent EFI update and the OSX 10.8.3 update, when I have been using Safari, my mac has become very sluggish and I get the spinning beachball whihch doesn't clear.  I have only had this MacBook for 17 days.  has anyone else had this problem?

hope there will be a fix soon…
Yours is not a common problem, and no fix for it will be forthcoming automatically anytime soon.
The symptoms you describe could indicate a failing Hard drive, and you should set all else aside and make certain your Backups are completely up-to-date.
"Any drive can fail at any time."
In cases like this, a visit to the Genius Bar is really the best solution. Your appointment at the Genius Bar for an evaluation is FREE, in warranty or out.

  • My Macbook Pro (retina) doesn't want to read an IDE with adapter?

I purchase a Sabrent USB 2.0 to Sata/IDE hard drive Adapter, as I would like to look at all the data on three old hard drives I've extracted from old PC's (which had Windows 95 - 98 I believe) as it's mainly just photo's and perhaps a few documents needed.   May be some .mp3 music files as well.
Now, I sit here with my Macbook Pro on my lap, the old Hard drive is humming nicely, the red LED showing on my adapter showing the USB is hooked up nicely to the Macbook....but if I open either Finder or Disk Utility nothing is showing up?
By what I can tell, the IDE HD is set as 'master' if that helps?
I'm not quite sure why there is an issue, but I thought some of you folks would be much more an expert on this than I, as I it just took me most of a day to figure out how to correctly put a new Samsung EVO SSD in my wife's 2012 Macbook Pro, where I then took out the optical drive and put a caddy with her old HD in it.  I ran 'Carbon Copy' cloner, and all is good....albeit, I haven't yet eliminated the data on the Sata drive, as it asks me for a password to be able to do this, and I'm not sure if that is the correct way to delete all files and repartition?   So in reality, I guess I have TWO questions!
All three drives I have are from PC's, and are IDE drives from a Window based PC, so should my Macbook Pro be able to read these drives, and be able to copy the files I'd like to save/copy from it?   I'd then like to transfer them to my external hard drive (4 TB) which are mainly photo's of my kids when they where little.   Not sure if having the IDE set as 'master' is the issue, or if the data being Windows based might be it?   I'm new to doing this sort of thing, so I appreciate any advice you might have.
    Thanks in advance!

Remove the WiFi profile in System Preferences/Network and reset up the connection.

  • Macbook Pro Retina doesn't see internal SSD drive

    Hi Guys,
I have a problem with my Macbook Pro Retina 13(late 2012). Yesterday I've done clean install of Yosemite. Everything worked fine, and I wanted to restore my files using Time Machine. So I restarted it (command +R), plugged in my extertal hard drive, turned on TM restore option and chose my SSD drive as a place to install. Mac asked me to enter password for the SSD (default filevault2 in yosemite), I entered the password, system accepted it and then something went wrong. System told me to restart mac and try again. I restarted it, and did like previous but this time, my mac stopped to see his internal SSD drive. System was asking where to install yosemite form Time Machine and there were no drive to choose. I turned on disc utility, and I see my SSD drive there but I can't erase it, or unlock (picture in appendage). I can only verify disc and it shows that drive is fine. I've tried to install Yosemite on my external drive and boot from there,to unlock SSD in settings(I've chose my Ex. drive as a place to install Yosemite) but it didn't work. I even tried internet recovery (command+option+R) but I didn't help, SSD drive was still useless.
I think my SSD is still locked, but I don't know how to unlock it now. I don't need to use Time Machine anymore(I have my files in other drive too). It can be clean install but please, can somebody tell me what to do? I have exams this week and really need a computer :<

Start your mac up by holding the alt key. That is boot from function.
If its empty then you might have a hard drive issue. Due to your hard drive being picked up but not the partition on the drive. This will most probably be a OS X reinstall.
Erase the drive and reinstall the OS X or run a recovery mode.
    Good luck

  • Trouble using firewire drives via thunderbolt adapter on bootcamped Mac Pro 2013 towers

Here at the university, we've just installed a new classroom of Mac Pro towers (late 2013).  We like to use Bootcamp in said classroom, and so I (painstakingly) installed Windows 8.1 on a test machine.  I've found that the brand new firewire-to-thunderbolt adapters we bought don't seem to work when booted into Windows.  I have few LaCie firewire drives I use to install software packages, and the occasional WD My Book, and our students are encourage to purchase G-Drives to back up their film projects.
I have a couple of LaCie drives that I've partitioned as part Mac OS Extended and part ExFat (or even MS-DOS just in case).   The Windows-friendly partitions don't mount or even get detected, so I think it's the adapter(s) not being recognized by Windoes, especially since the firewire to thunderbolt adapters work on the Mac side.
Could this be a driver problem like what's mentioned here?

Well, no one answered at all, but somehow the problem solved itself.  I'm not sure if one of the automatic Windows updates cleared things up or what, but now I can connect Firewire drives with no problems.  Also, as some kind of bonus, Windows 8 is able to read Mac partitioned firewire drives, which I don't think was possible in Windows 7.
The problem may also have been that I hadn't entered the Windows activation key in yet? I'm not sure that makes sense in terms of Thunderbolt adapters...
10+ years ago, I read a Microsoft tip of the day that said "Problems that go away by themselves can come back by themselves." It's haunted me ever since.

  • MacBook Pro Core i7 intermittent freezes lasting ~5-30 seconds

    MacBook Pro
    CPU Core i7 2.66GHz
    RAM 4GB 1067MHz DDR3
    HDD Seagate 500GB 7200RPM
    MacBookPro6,2
    Boot ROM Version: MBP61.0057.B09
    SMC Version (system): 1.58f16
    Serial ATA HDD: ST9500420ASG
    Revision: 0008APM2
    Link Speed: 3 Gigabit
    Negotiated Link Speed: 1.5 Gigabit
I'm experiencing frequent freezes while doing trivial light tasks that shouldn't really put any strain on this system (e.g. as basic as writing an email). These freezes last anywhere between 5-20 seconds where the music (if playing) stops, mouse cursor changes to a spinning beach-ball and all applications one by one stop responding (e.g. click to activate app works but then immediately it goes to beach ball, this for 2-3 apps and then even this stops responding).
The biggest problem is that the freezes are very unpredictable and hard to connect to any particular event (application activity or something like that). There are times where I can experience 4-5 freezes in a period of 20 minutes or it could go on for hours without them.
I tried quite a few things to resolve this issue but without any success
    — reset PRAM
    — reset SMC
    — repaired permissions
    — turned off sudden motion sensor
    — turned off Spotlight
    — disabled automatic graphics switching
    — created a new account in OS X
    — disabled Airport and used Ethernet
    — disabled hard disk drive sleep
None of the above fully resolves the issue. Some of the items appear to make it less frequent but I doubt they actually make any difference at all, considering the inconsistent frequency of the problem.
Tracked the temperature of the system — the problem does not seem to be related in any way to high temperature. In fact it sometimes occurs almost immediately after wake-up or power-on.
There are no console messages when the hangs occur either.
The thread below describes a very similar (if not the same) problem
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2407560&tstart=45
Anyone else experiencing this? Any idea about a solution short of changing the hard drive? Ideas for communicating the problem with Apple (as it's intermittent it's hard to reproduce it on demand).

I seemed to have fixed mine by accident...
in system preferences...start up disc...mine had network start up highlighted, i selected the other and have not had any more problems... hope this helps

  • Can I use the HDMI Out on my macbook pro retina for audio without connecting a video device?

While the MBP has TOSLINK output from the headphone jack, TOSLINK does not have the bandwidth to carry the high resolution audio from many blu-rays and DVD-Audio disks. I would like to hook my MBP to an audio-only HDMI sink so I can pipe the multichannel output to my surround speaker setup.
My concern is that the MBP will get "confused" and do one of the following things - both of which are "bad":
    1) It will decide that a video device is there, and put the desktop on the nonexistent HDMI display OR
    2) It will decide to send no signal at all (no video, no audio) because it sees no video device.
    Any thoughts on this?
In short - thinking of using something like this: http://www.ambery.com/2hddodtsdihd.html
with the HDMI out of the MBP and then piping its 6 discrete analog outputs to my old (but excellent for computer speakers) Logitech Z680 setup.
But I want any movie video to remain unperterbed on my Thunderbolt display. And if I am not watching a movie and am just listening to multichannel FLACs or something, then I'd like to run the media player normally and have the usual desktop on my MBP or Thunderbolt display.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks to all!!
