MacOS X 10.4.8 & Dual G5 2.0 GHz freezes lately

Hello,
Due to no apparent reason my Dual G5 2GHz running MacOS X 10.4.8 freezes every day! The only way out is to pull the power plug!
Troubles maybe startet when installing 10.4.7 or 10.4.8, but I can't track this down.
I've got 1GB RAM, several volumes, one--my startup volume--called 'System', having a total size of 77,8GB, currently holds 41,39GB of free space.
Any clues on how to solve this one?

Could be due to any number of things. Your system may have a corrupted file. You may be using third-party software that's incompatible. You may have a corrupted cache. You may have a defect in the drive directory.
You can start by doing a few things:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. Note that Disk Warrior will not work on Intel Macs.
Download the shareware utility TinkerTool System or an equivalent utility and use it to clear out the user, system, and font caches as well as remove old log files. Be sure you run the OS X maintenance scripts.
Boot into safe mode. If you don't have any problems then the freeze is likely due to something that isn't loaded in safe mode such as third-party startupitems, login items, and extensions.

For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption. However, DW is not yet compatible with Intel Macs; TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility called Macaroni that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. SuperDuper (Commercial)
6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - not universal binary.)
7. LaCie SilverKeeper (Freeware - not universal binary)
8. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)

    Why don't you take your 'old' MBP into your local Apple Store and have them check out everything that's wrong with it - and I mean everything? Then, when you get an estimate about how much it would cost to get the machine completely repaired, ask about the Apple flat-rate repair pricing?
    It's worth a shot - and with what you may save, you can put in the bank for a new MBP.

  • Purchasing a new Boot drive  for Power PC Mac dual G5 2.7 GHz ( early 2005)

    As I’ve mentioned I have Power MAC Dual G5 2,7 GHz( early 2005)
    I’m doing “ erase and install” on my boot drive Caviar and starting from the scratch - Basically doing whole new setup with my music apps,sample libraries and back up.
    To describe it little better - My plan is to move Caviar to second slot ( mostly will be used for I-tunes,documents,photos and maybe some back up) and purchase new boot drive.
    All my audio and music samples I’m running from 4 bay ( sata ) exterior hot swap enclosure with Lycom card so my boot drive will be clearly for OS X and applications.
    Now - I’ve gone through a big research and even though I have not really make up my mind about my purchase - here is what I’ve found out so far.
    As a boot drive I’ve been considering following ( I’m adding my comments as well)
    1) My first pick was Hitachi T7K500 320GB SATA II HD 16MB Cache -
    seemed to me like a very good choice for a boot drive since it has a great random access .But after reading review in “ AMUG reviews “ Using a Hitachi T7K500 320GB with a Mac Pro I was not that sure .Apparently They don’t recommend Hitachi T7K500 for internal Mac Pro usage since it is slower without using SATA host adapter. But that is Mac Pro - I have Dual processor so it might be different?
    Second choice was
    2) Maxtor MaXLine III 500GB or Maxtor MaXLine Pro 500 GB
    here I’m not sure -some guys don’t really recommend this brand but in bunch of online reviews I’ve read it was mentioned as a very good choice for a boot drive .
    I’ve been told that this drive is too noisy and too cheap which I think is not a bad thing though.
    And finally
    3) Raptor 74 GB or 150 GB
    Everyone knows those drives are fast
    Downside is that size is not very big ( just my OS X will be around 50 GB)
    plus 150 Gig won’t work natively on my G5 without host card which would be another extra expense .
    Maybe one more thing to add - I have not consider neither seagate drives (since random access speed is not that great) nor pairing any of those previously mentioned drives into raid 0 configuration .
    So basically that is my selection.I’m trying to pick up drive which would work natively without PCI - X card and would be reliable and fast.( Only if I would have no choice - Than I would probably buy a host card )
    Also I’m not sure whether for example in the case of hitachi ( or even other brands ) would be smarter to go with bigger size - maybe 400 or 500 GB for a boot since all drives getting slower as they get filled up.
    I would really appreciate if anyone can give me a feedback as far as what drive would be the best choice in my case.

  • Buying dual G5 2.5 ghz or mac mini?

    I currently have a Mac G3. I want to get a powermac dual G5 2.5 ghz, but i also want os x 10.6 to work on it. does the G% have the Intel processor?

    I'm toying with a similar choice.
    I have a G5PM but would love an Intel so my choice is either a 'pre loved' Mac Pro or for about the same money a base model iMac.
    My advice is to go for the iMac over the Mac Mini, unless you have a good and relatively new DVI LCD monitor larger than 22 inches. Once you add in the cost of the monitor for the Mac Mini the iMac comes out on top considering the new model iMac is much faster (than the Mac Mini or early Intel Pro Mac's) has more RAM and a bigger HDD than the iMac and other nice features like the camera. Also the Mac Mini doesn't include a KB or Mouse.
    Now if the Mac Mini had the i3 Intel CPU, 4Gb RAM and 500Gb HDD, then it might be a closer fight.
    Just My Opinion.
    You could always sell your existing LCD/KB/Mouse on eBay if you don't need them.

  • Powermac G5 Dual Core 2.0 GHZ or Macbook Pro Dual Core 2.0 GHZ

    I have a Macbook Pro Dual Core 2.0 GHZ that currently has 1 GB of RAM in it. For the most part it runs fine, but I do come into problems with it sometimes while I'm doing video editing which is my main usage for my computer. I currently run Final Cut Studio 2. Would it be worth it to sell this computer and get a Powermac G5 Dual Core 2.0 GHZ or 2.3 GHZ and upgrade the RAM to 8 GB to help my video editing run smoother? The reason why I am considering this is because I would like a computer that would work better with my video editing at a cost that I can afford. I also would like to have a firewire 800 port for my external hard drives. I rarely use my internal hard drive, so that is no factor in my decision. Currently I cannot afford a new Mac Pro, but will be buying one in about a year. I'm just trying to decide if this would be a good switch for right now. Thanks for your help.

    Although I don't own a Mac Pro, rumor has it that they run video chores significantly more efficiently than do the last generation G5's. I bought my 2.3 GHz, w/the 7800 card, for $600, last November on eBay. The case wasn't cosmetically perfect (a rather nasty looking crimp on the front handle) but it has performed well running my video (EyeTV and recording) and academic (I teach math & Mathematica) needs. I picked-up extra memory (it now has 6 Gigs) pretty cheap (around $75, IIRC), from Kingston. I also took the advice of many here and got a WD 640GB HD that made a significant difference in both boot-time and opening applications. However, if you're going to get a new Mac Pro in a year, it's almost like throwing money away - the G5 will probably have its' depreciation rate decrease once the software vendors no longer continue supporting pre-Intel machines. That being said, my G5 is more than sufficient handling my present version of Mathematica - I don't think that paying $3000, or whatever it takes to get a new Mac Pro, would balance the marginal increase of utility I would get using Mathematica. If I were a video guru, I might feel differently. I thought I could give you a definitive yes, buy the G5, because I really love mine. Unless something happens, I plan on having it for at least a few years. At about $250/year, if one figures that I'll have owned it for a total of 3 years, that's less than 70¢/day. But I also value the opinions of many of the posters who have commented on the new machine's speed, compared to the 2.5 GHz Quad, say.

  • G5 Dual Core 2.3 GHz Multiple Repairs

    I have a G5 Dual Core 2.3 GHz that has been in for multiple repairs in the last 3 months and everything has been replaced (motherboard, video card, power supply, and processor), luckily it was under apple care. Originally the machine was randomly going to sleep in the middle of an application.
    Figuring that I would get a good year out of this one, the processor went bad again after a week...back to Apple.
    I'm thinking about selling it but somehow I would feel guilty passing on a lemon to someone else, then again everything has been replaced, so statistically the machine should be OK (though that's what I thought before the processor went bad again the last time).
    Any users here that have a G5 that has NOT had any repairs?...or have had similar bad luck? My G4 DP 1.42 has been super reliable, though it's hard to go back to the high fan noise compared to the quiet G5.

    You definitely don't want to pass on a lemon. It sounds like this one could be iffy.
    Research your local consumer protection laws. My state gives a manufacturer three attempts to fix a problem and then the machine is declared a "lemon" and is eligible for replacement. Apple generally abides by this type of policy, however if your laws are more favorable to the consumer they will generally abide by those laws as well.

  • Dual G5 1.8 GHz screen/keyboard freezes (new with 10.4.6)

    Three times in the past month the screen and keyboard on my dual 1.8 GHz G5 (first generation) have "frozen" as I closed windows or Command-tabbed between running applications.
    When the screen and keyboard are frozen, the menubar clock does not increment, but I can still move the cursor across the screen with the mouse. The machine itself is not frozen. I can log into it as a server from my MacBook Pro, read files from its hard drives and write files to its hard drives, but I cannot do anything from the machine's own keyboard. If I press the "sleep" LED on my Apple LCD display, the LED dims but doesn't extinguish, and the machine doesn't sleep. If I hold down that LED on the monitor, the machine will power off. On reboot, the recovered files folder in the trash holds six files whose names all start with "dftmp" (five of the six are named dftmpGELNNHAM with some subsequent lower case k and other characters, the sixth dftmpCPEMKHAM, also followed by a string of k and other lower case characters. The Recovered Files folder in the trash also contains a SENDMAIL folder, which is empty.
    One diagnostic suggestion I received was to open Activity Monitor and the Console to see if anything unusual occurred (spikes in processor usage or RAM usage, for example). I have the logs, and just a few minutes ago another freeze occurred (the console's display and the Activity Monitor display freeze along with everything else). I'm not capable of interpreting the logs.
    Rebooting after this most recent freeze, the CPU usage bar graph now shows the two processors alternating in rhythmic spikes of CPU usage by System (from a low of 5% to a high of more than 30%, the spikes being about 18 seconds apart per processor (so total System CPU usage peaks at 30% or thereabouts every 9 seconds). My sense is that this is not normal, and my MacBook Pro certainly doesn't do this. At the moment, the only things I'm doing on the machine are typing this message, downloading in Thoth, and watching the logs and Activity Monitor.
    Is anyone interested in looking at my console logs? Is there someone else I should report this to? It's not something I can show to my local Genius, because this has happened only 3 times in a month. On each occasion, the freeze occurred when I was closing windows or changing focus from one window to another, but I cannot reproduce the freeze at will.

    Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption and see if that helps.

    If you don't use 64-bit you get 1.9GB RAM to work with, not really much.
    If you use Home Premium you have one processor.
    If you install 32-bit on one drive, you can then install 64-bit from inside on a 2nd partition, but that means two copies of System Builder 7 - 32 and 64-bit.
    The error is UEFI boot screen. Supported and req'd when working with EFI and GPT intro'd in very late 2007 and found on Mac Pro Early 2008 for Windows from Vista SP1 64-bit and later. It wasn't an issue with the original Vista Business 64-bit 2007 which is where I started basically (Ultimate RC1 beta also).
    There are ways to reburn the DVD so it works by modifying it from an ISO which you save to disk and use ImgBurn to redo.
    No issue running Windows in a VM like VirtualBox 4, and you may need to use a VM like that to use ImgBurn.
    If you search for "Select CD-ROM" there are some How-To articles and forum threads here and over on MacRumors and Microsoft. The one I used is no longer available or online from "jowie" or I'd link to it.

  • POWER PC G5 DUAL 2.5 GHZ FREEZING EVERYTIME THE FINDER OPENS.

    I HAD TROUBLE SINCE THE VERY BEGINNING.
    I HAVE A DUAL 2.5 GHZ G5 WITH 7 GB RAM. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A FLAWLESS INSTALL SINCE I HAVE A TOTAL OF 2.6 TB STORAGE. INSTEAD IT HAS BEEN A TOTAL NIGHTMARE, SLEEPLESS NIGHT WITH A CRASH-FREEZE AFTER FREEZE. I DID EVERYTHING POSSIBLE ERASE PRAM, TRY TO OPEN W/O XTENSIONS (DID NOT EVEN START THAT WAY) REINSTALL WITH ARCHIVE, INSTALL IN A SECOND HARD DRIVE OF MY FIVE ONES. NOW I AM A LITTLE DESPERATE . I SPOKE OVER AN HOUR TO APPLE SUPPORT. THEY RECOMMENDED THE INSTALL/ARCHIVE, AND GAVE ME A CASE # TO CALL BACK, IN CASE WOULD NOT WORK, WELL IT DID NOT WORK AND I HAD TO COME TO WORK. I NEED HELP.

    Me too! Dual 2Ghz with 3mb ram & multiple drives. I got 10.5 working - went well for about a week with occasional problems - keyboard keys sticking, occassionally hanging (have to shut down & startup using power key). Purchased a new keyboard thinking this was the difficulty + using bluetooth mighty mouse. Upgraded to 10.5.1 - experienced increased hangs. Zapped parameter ram (System started up on failed install on 2nd disk - grey screen of death - so inserted Leopard install disk, did permissions and disk check, chose startup disk - hung on choice. Since then have had repeated increasing slowness of system getting stuck on spotlight indexing which is highly variable - taking from 5 mins to 12hours to complete, meanwhile unable to open programmes. Occasionally able to open Mail but hangs, unable to force quit anything. Have tried to clear system by running chron, cleaning caches etc all to no avail. Tried reinstalling 10.5 (Archive & install)-hung in process, so now restore system from backup to 2nd disk with system on it, hangs at restart.
    Now going to try shut down via power button again & see what happens. Failing this I'll do a erase and install (or try) - been trying to avoid this as a lot of very important work on the drive in question, had put faith in Backup & time machine so should be on third backup disk but as I can't access this have no way of knowing. Also heaps of software to reinstall! Frustrated as for the last 4 days have spent almost entire time trying to get computer running rather than doing work. This is costing me lots. Left with the conclusion if this doesn't work I'll have no choice but to purchase new computer in order to complete work.
    Desperate for any assistance anyone could render. - Disks check out fine both using HD utility fsck etc.
    Very interested in any progress you have on this via apple.

  • Dual G4 1.8 GHz on steroids?

    Hi all,
    I'm contemplating purchasing a Mac Dual 1.8 GHz system. Apparently it's been upgraded as I don't believe Apple sold dual 1.8 stock systems. A screen snapshop shows such under the hardware overview:
    PowerMac G4
    PowerMac 3,5
    PowerPC G4 (0.0)
    Processor Speed (1.8 GHz)
    Number of CPUs: 2
    L2 Cache (per CPU) 512 KB
    Memory 1.5 GB
    Bus Speed 133 MHz
    Shouldn't it also display the L3 cache. I know there are L3 caches on the other stock dual 1.25 and 1.42 systems. Also, when this person upgraded, do they just swap or add faster CPUs? Or are other things upgraded as well? I guess what I'm trying to ask is, when machines are upgraded to faster CPUs, what is the process? What actually gets upgraded besides the CPU if any? I'm just afraid although the CPUs would be faster the infrastructure (L2 L3 cache, Bus speed) would be left behind and therefore not optimum upgrade. Would this Mac be considered faster than the last G4 made: dual G4 1.42? Thanks all.

    Sounds like a QuickSilver with a dual 7447 processor upgrade.
    Processor upgrades typically require a firmware patch, and then the CPU daughtercard and heatsinks are replaced.
    Though not as fast in video processes as a CPU with L3 cache, the 2x 1.8ghz 7447 with 512mb L2 is a very good performer, and will boost overall system performance well beyond the fastest QS, the dual 1.0ghz model.
    The upgrade isn't a waste of time, and a dual processor G4 system will handle multi-tasking, video, and multi-processing optimized software very well.
    The system should perform in the realm of the MDD dual 1.25/1.42ghz machine, better in many tasks.

    I currently have a Imac G5 single 2.o processor and looking to get a desktop for dual screen video editing. All of my software is pre mac pro versions Final cut/Adobe After Effects - Photoshop. My question is since u have to upgrade/crossgrade to all new software for the mac pros would i be better off getting a used dual 2.5 ghz instead of the mac pro intel 2.66 ghz. My single processor has been "OK" but I could definitely used the speed for dvd authoring and the expansion capability and use the money saved for other toys.

  • Want to Upgrade my MacPro (Dual Core) 2.66 Ghz to a SSD

    Hi,
    I would like to upgrade my current MacPro (Dual Core) 2.66Ghz computer that has a 250GB HD to a possible 256 SSD or bigger. Are they compatible? I dont know if this matters or not but I also have 10gb of RAMM.

    Once  you install the SSD do the following. First, prepare the new SSD:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    Next, clone your existing drive to the SSD (assuming the SSD is 256 GBs this will work.)
    Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the SSD. Source means the startup drive.
    Now, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the SSD's disk icon then click on the arrow button below the icon. This will boot the computer from the SSD if all is well.
    If it boots successfully then open Startup Disk preferences, select the SSD, then click on the Restart button which will restart from the SSD.

  • Dual Layer DVD-R are freezing

    I got Lacie dual layer recorder (*** according consumer report)
    I made 5 copies 2 hours DVD from Mpeg2, which exported from FCP5. Each copy either freezes or skips in a half way. My media is 4X RiData. I wonder if the DVD was burned to fast. I have to use 1X. If DVD players are playing fine the commercial DVD, which are dual layers, why they would not play well my burned copies? Is there a setting to tell the DVD burner to use a slow, 1X speed?

  • Dual port/Snow AIrport BS freezes intermittently

    I have a Snow airport base station which used to work perfectly. Now it jams up every 24 hours or so, although I haven't made any changes that I am aware of. The Airport is connected to a cable modem through the WAN port, and I have a Powerbook linked by wireless and a G5 linked by ethernet cable to it. When it locks, neither computer can get through to the internet. The Powerbook continues to show a strong wifi signal. Airport Admin cannot find the base station from either computer. Nevertheless, the status lights continue to show no problem (centre on steadily, left and right both flickering). Pulling out the mains plug and restarting gets it going again until the next time it locks.
    What is the likely problem - and is there a cure?

    I don't believe you'll find an option to turn off the radio on a Snow using Airport Utility. You may be able to reduce its transmitter power though.
    If you're not averse to disassembling it you can simply remove its Airport card. I don't know if that will affect its router though. The card may be of value to those with older equipment, since it's not made any more. At worst you can just disconnect its antenna.
