Macports/digiKam - install in ADMIN-account or as USER ?

Hi,
for all my main apps, I want to switch over to open source / cross-platform. With the discontinuation of iPhoto, I think this would be a good moment to do this for my photo app, since one has to switch anyway. I chose digiKam. To install it on a Mac, one has to first install Macports, which I have absolutely no experience with (I'm NOT a developer, but I thought you guys might know best).
To save me some trial and error:
My main user account is  (of course )  a NON-ADMIN account. When installing Macports / digiKam, is this best done:
from within the account of the user who later wants to use digiKam?
from within an ADMIN-ACCOUNT, and then ALL USERS can later use digiKam in their respective accounts?
or maybe it doesn't matter ...
I still like OSX, but it's always good to have options ...
Cheers.

Why do you want to do this? Anything you get from MacPorts is going to be kludgy tool developed for Linux. They almost always have to be installed as the root user.
i strongly urge you to reconsider this plan. The new Photos is a nice app. Why not use it?

  • Downloading and installing on admin account vs standard account

What is the difference for downloading and installing files when:
logged in on an admin account
logged in on a standard account (using the admin details when prompted)
I ask this, because when I am in my standard account, the downloaded files and installed applications are owned by the standard account. Does this affect how the files run on other standard accounts?

In other words, is it better to do all downloading and installing whilst logged into the admin account? The Ownership & Permissions is stopping me from doing this when logged in on my standard account. There are many other standard accounts, and I am concerned that my standard account will not be equal. This is because of the permissions issues outlined previously.
P.S. Sorry for the multiple posts. I can't find a way to edit the original post.

  • Does disabling specific OS functionality in Terminal with Admin account affect standard users too?

    Hello,
I am performing some security enhanacements and had a question:
Is it safe to assume that any service-disabling Terminal command that I enter under my Admin account will affect all standard users as well?  I other words, any string that includes "System/Library/LaunchDaemon..." etc will affect all standard users too, right?  I am presuming that if the services I am disabling were only for individual user logins, the string would start with 'user' and not 'system.'  Is this correct?
I disabled all that I wanted under my Admin account, but am wondering if I need to do the same for each standard account too (which would pose a problem because the standard accounts don't have 'sudoer' access) . . .
    Thanks!

any string that includes "System/Library/LaunchDaemon..." etc will affect all standard users too, right?
Yes. I suggest you make yourself completely familiar with the OS X startup process before you start making changes.

  • Exporting photos from iPhoto admins account to another users iphoto account

    Hi all
Probably a silly question but I have just set up another family member with their own login on my mac and am wondering how to transfer/export pictures from my iPhoto folders to the other user login' iPhoto

Enable iPhoto Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane. Pics can then be dragged from your Library in the iPhoto Window to theirs.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.

  • Installing Elements 6 (non Admin account)

I have been reading the posts in the forum regarding Elements as this is software which I am considering for purchase with Barbara Brundage's book. I have recently switched to a mac which I love and don't want to introduce problems which I might be able to avoid by asking first. Permissions etc are new to me as my experience with Windows was just to run as Admin something I don't want to do in Leopard.
I posted in one thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8912633#8912633
My initial concerns came from user reviews about the actual install which has now had more light shed on it as I run as a Standard user on my Mac. I have an Admin account created n day one but only use this to do my updates and install iWorks plus the new iLife when it arrives. Day to day I am a standard user but after reading the post I have linked I am now unsure if I could use Elements as a standard user even if I did the install from my Admin account.
I prefer to be a standard use on the Mac therefore would appreciate advice if it is possible to use Elements as myself or do I have to create another account (Admin user) which doesn't have all my photos etc in order to run Elements smoothly?
I am also considering Aperture but think I still need Elements for extra tools. Hopefully someone will know if this is possible as a standard user. My initial thoughts were to install from Admin account and then log out and start to use Elements as my own account but this is where the big question comes in after reading the way Adobe installs and works with permissions.
I will be prepared to wait rather than find I have introduced problems by the wrong type of install and use. Thanks for any advice, I have checked Adobe's forum and various read reviews but still haven't overcome my worries about this.

ld simply keep their photos in their Home Folder and use Photoshop Elements to process them.
Thank you Roger your help is appreciated as it helps with my other installs too.
I am still uncertain if Elements will work for me as a standard user as the other topic made me aware of problems which I presume would make my use as a standard user after the install troublesome?
    Quote from http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1806242&start=30&tstart=0
+Elements needs to be installed by admin account, and to be run from the same account or you can run into a problem with certain things not working correctly. Some of the permissions on some of the files are just plain wrong. On my own install I went in and changed them to what they really ought to be so that everything works in all *admin accounts*.+
Thank you for your patience with my feeble understanding of the way Elements would work for me if I am not a day to day Admin. Hopefully I am thinking along the wrong path and I would be able to continue with my account setup using Elements after the Admin install.

  • Restoring admin account from non-admin account

For a while I've had a problems booting and logging in, which is either a HD or corruption problem, but once in to my admin account, I'm fine for the rest of the day. (This isn't a question about these problems, I know I must do something separately about that.)
This morning I had greater problems than usual, followed by a problem in my admin account - having saved a document once, the next time I got ("[document] could not be saved"). So I restarted, but couldn't get from my login account to my main admin account (after the login details box disappeared, I was left with the empty Leopard splash screen). A second restart brought the same result. I can assume my admin account has some corruption?
I'd like to restore the admin account from the Users folder on yesterday's Time Machine backup, but how do I do that from one of my other accounts, all of which are non-admin accounts?

    2. They put Leopard on my machine as - incredibly - they didn't have Tiger install disks, but they couldn't give me the Leopard install disks so I can't do a system restore.
That's a violation of the license. Legally, you're running pirated software. Worse, you can't restore OSX or Apple apps, repair your internal HD, do a full system restore from your TM backups, etc.
You need a retail Leopard disc, period. If the folks who installed it won't supply it (you might gently suggest that you'll report them to Apple), call AppleCare and pay the $129. If you're going to run Leopard, you need to pay for it.
Or, return to Tiger. On your EHD running Tiger, use the Restore tab to copy the entire Tiger OSX volume to the internal HD. Be sure to check the +Erase destination+ box. That will, of course, erase everything on your Leopard installation. You might be able to copy some of the data elsewhere temporarily, then copy it back, but any data used by Leopard may not work with the Tiger apps.
I've now determined, by trying to login to the iMac HD via Restart+option that my admin account is corrupted - I can login to every other account but not that one.
However, as I explained, i can see all its folders and files via the Tiger account with the same name and password. Here is a possible action plan, let me know what you think?
    Does that sound workable?
    Doubtful.

    Hi All,
Got the solution. This is what I did to unlock the admin account:
    systemidentity_update <ormapp-user> <admin-user> <attrfile>

  • Should I have the same admin account name on multiple computers

Currently I have a Macbook with an admin account plus 2 user accounts. When get a 2nd macbook, should I use the same admin name on the 2nd computer? I was thinking of making all admin account names the same for multiple macbooks, time machine, network etc. Maybe it doesn't really matter and it just means remembering multiple login names and passwords. On a related question, should the same account name be used on multiple computers. This would create a home directory on each computer with the same name. Would it be best to keep seperate names? I am refering to computer accounts, not itunes or app store accounts.

It doesn't really matter, but my vote is for different Admin names and passwords and for different computer/disk names.
The first one is for increased security (if someone breaks your password on one, they won't have access to the other). The second one is to easilly distinguish the different macs and disks in a file sharing, network browsing and syncing situations.

  • Admin accounts now standard

I have a MacBook Pro that overnight changed all the admin accounts to standard user account including the ROOT account. I even followed the instructions in the apple article TS1278 but it still leaves the root account as an admin. Other than performing a reinstall, is there anything else that can be done.

    Hi,
I've to revamp this discussion to clearify few doubts about V.K.'s procedure
I've read the procedure at this link:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7747478
I've to ask something to you V.K.:
    1) Sorry but English is not my mother-language so... I can't completely understand this part of your post:
+"If you can't get rid of errors do not proceed with other commands and enter+
    reboot
+This will reboot the computer. Post back. "+
Do you mean that if I NOT get errors message I've to reboot the computer and reapeat the "fsck -fy" procedure or I've to reboot anyway and checking again the disk?
    2) When you talk about recreating the Administrator Group, if I have more then a user (for istance: A and B), but I want only 1 admin (A), I'll digit only the unix command about user A, is it right?
Will it not cause any problem to user B? Will it still remain a standard user?
Thanks for any response to my questions,
    Matteo

  • I can't login to admin account properly after installing Lion

It's been a week since I installed OS X Lion and everything was fine until a couple of days ago. When I was logging in to my account (an admin account), I could not get past the gray screen with the spinning rainbow wheel, or my desktop would show up but doesn't show any progress. I've already tried booting on Safe Mode and it worked, except that the audio input/output were disabled. I tried logging in to the other accounts and I didn't experience any problems. Please help me, I really don't know what I should do to fix and resolve this problem. Thanks in advance!

    Hi rodeo21
Did you enable this particular admin account when you enable FileVault?

  • Can I delete all files and users (including admin account) without re-installing SL?

I have a 1st generation Macbook Air, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Just bought myself a new MBA, want to sell the old one (privately, not soliciting here).
The original install disks were Leopard.  I bought a family pack SL and upgraded the MBA at that point.  Earlier this year I sold my old Mac Mini (when I upgraded) and included the SL install disks with that sale (stupid of me).
Now I want to sell the old MBA.  Ideally, I'd have a clean install on SL on it, minus all previous files and accounts.  I've done that before when selling old computers, reformatted / erased the HD, then reinstalled the OS.  But I don't have the SL disk anymore, and I don't really want to pay for it just to prep this notebook for sale.
    AFAICT, my options are:
wipe the HD and reinstall Leopard (the only OSX disks I have).  Whoever buys it from me would need to upgrade to SL themselves, and from there to Lion if they want.
somehow try to delete all files and users without touching the current install of SL.  I'm not terribly worried about security of what little information is on the MBA (nothing important to me), so I don't mind trashing files and then emptying trash instead of wiping the HD block by block.
Any ideas for how to do #2?  I can trash all files/folders under /user, uninstall all applications and delete their folders from Library, uninstall all browsers except Safari and wipe the history from that...
Is there other stuff I should be deleting?  plist files, maybe?  I'm leery of messing around too much and disrupting the install of the underlying OS.
Can I also delete the admin account (or rename it "admin" with a generic default password?)?
    Any other suggestions?  Thanks.

Trashing files you have created is relatively easy. Getting rid of an account is a bit harder. Trashing the .plist files, etc., that may contain personal info is a lot harder, and there is always the risk that you will miss something.
Best, and easiest, and customary, is to do option #1 - wipe the drive and re-install the original OS from the original disk set. The receiver of the machine can then decide which OS they want to upgrade it to, and purchse accordingly.
The original disk set for that machine should be included with it when it is sold.

Looking forward to hearing from somebody with a littlemore expertise than me, Chris

you can remove preferences files by navigating to the Preferences folder for your user as follows:
    0) Quit ALL iWork apps (Keynote, Pages and Numbers)
    1) from the Finder select the menu item "Go > Go To Folder…".  This will bring up a dialog:
    2) enter the path "~/Library/Preferences" (no double quotes)
    3) find the files:
    com.apple.iWork.Keynote.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
and move these to the trash.  I would NOT empty until later.
    4) restart Numbers
