MacPro Logic Board Dies, But...

Hi, Everyone-
Here is a Mac Pro story that may be of interest. I purchased my MacPro (2.66) 3 weeks ago from PC Connection, with 2 GB of RAM and 1 500 GB hard drive. It worked great for awhile, fast and silent.
Last week, I installed additional memory I had ordered from MacSolutions, a 2x1GB kit. One of the LEDs on the riser board came on, indicating a problem with one of the sticks. After reseating, and moving the sticks around, (always in pairs, of course), to check things out, I called MacSolutions and got an RMA to return the one bad stick.
Meanwhile, I ordered 2 more 1 GB sticks from OWC. My goal was to have a total of 6 GB, including the original 4x512MB sticks that came with the machine. While installing the MacSolutions RAM, and moving it around to get it to show up correctly in System Profiler, I noticed the fans would rev up to an extremely loud level after restart. I could always correct this by resetting the PRAM and/or the SMC.
Today I received the OWC 1 GB sticks, and installed them; (still waiting for the other MacSolutions 1 GB stick; the one I have can't be used alone, of course) On restart, I reset PRAM again, and the machine fired up. All was great for a couple of minutes; About This Mac and System Profiler showed 4GB of RAM, all OK.
Then the fans started up; louder than ever. I shut the machine down, and reset the SMC switch inside, and also reset PRAM again on restart. Fine again, and after 2 minutes, the fans were roaring. Nothing would stop this, including trying the RAM sticks in different arrangements (always in pairs, of course), switching the risers, etc.
I talked with OWC tech support, and told them I didn't think there was a problem with their sticks; none of the LEDS on the riser boards had come on. and the RAM did show up correctly in System Profiler. He couldn't tell me anything to try that I hadn't already done, so I called Apple Tech Support.
The level one person also walked me through everything I had already tried, with no success. She then turned me over to a Product Specialist, who had me do the Apple Hardware Test on the install disc.
Doing this indicated a serious problem with the MacPro's logic board. He had me run the test twice, the 2nd time with the memory risers switched, just to be sure it wasn't one of them. The same error number came up both times, indicating a bad logic board.
Then, a slight bit of good news. He indicated that this was an unusual problem that Apple engineers would be interested in checking out, so I would not have to send my computer out for warranty work. (I do not have AppleCare, and I live in an extremely remote area).
They are sending me FedEx labels, and I will be packing up my MacPro and sending it to Apple. When they receive it, they will be immediately sending me a brand new machine, fully tested.
I will be without my MacPro for a few days, but hopefully the new machine will be fine, and I can install all my extra RAM, hard drives, etc.
One question I have at the end of all of this is: could attempting to install additional RAM from MacSolutions and OWC have caused the problem with the logic board, or was it doomed from the beginning anyway? Both brands of RAM have the Apple recommended heat sinks. (The Apple tech support people couldn't say for sure either way, but they are willing to replace my machine...)

Yes, this is not common to all Apple laptops, but let's be honest here, it is common to one Apple laptop--the iBook G3. Failing logic boards in these computers was such a serious problem that Apple initiated the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program (your G4 is not covered by this program). Increasingly. over that past months there seems to be many many G4 users having their logic boards fail after the warranty period ends (google "iBook G4 faulty logic boards").
A petition has been created by other unhappy G4 owners requesting that Apple extend the coverage of their Logic Board Repair program to iBook G4s. You can access the petition at:

  • AHT finds logic board error, but computer working fine

    I ran the Apple Hardware Test to see the profile for my RAM, but 7 seconds into the test it stopped and reported a logic board error.
    1. But my computer is working fine. If anyone has experience with this, I'll gladly take your advice. Do I ignore this error at my own risk?     Eleven months ago, I had to get a new power supply installed. It was covered under the extended warranty for power issues with iMac G5s. As I've indicated, it's been working fine since then.
    2. Once AHT finds an error, it won't continue testing the remaining components. Does anyone know of a way to "force" the AHT to skip the logic board test and go on to test the other hardware items?

    Michael, pray tell, where does one find the published list of codes you refer to? I searched the whole internet (or so it seemed like it) looking for a resource like that. Are you an AASP?
    Even my experienced Apple technician and his AASP contacts didn't realize that my error code relates to the European Union. (And, BTW, I'm in Canada and I purchased my iMac from a store in Canada.) You have solved a mystery!
    The strange thing is that when I phoned Apple Tech Support and asked to speak to a product specialist, even they told me that the code means "logic board needs replacement." When I asked to speak to a higher dept., I was connected to Customer Relations (very nice, professional fellow answered). When I explained that this G5 iMac has been problematic for me (failure after 7 mos. of ownership, power supply failure after 3 yrs, etc.) he offered me $100.00 off a new iMac ($125.00 in Canada), which I accepted.
    I did use TechTool Pro to check the computer. It found no problems. Four months later and it's still going strong. I don't know whether to be upset with Apple for not bothering to look up the code, or whether I should look at this as a blessing in disguise (how else would I have received $125.00 off a new iMac? And now, my father gets a G5 that I can confidently say is in good working order). And it's strange that my local tech's AASP friends weren't any wiser. Aren't AASPs privy to this error code info? A mystery indeed...

    Hi I'm planning on giving my MacBook Pro to Apple to replace the logic board but I have run into a issue Apple are saying they won't give me the old logic board back witch is a bit stupid if my Mac's out of warranty then the logic board belongs to me as I'm paying for the new logic board to be replaced so my question is how do I get Apple to give me my old logic board ?     That is their normal way of handling things: they keep the part they replace.
    Now, if it's out of warranty and you're paying for it, I'd try to explain that part. However.... why is it that you want the logic board? If it's fried, it's no longer of any use, so why do you want it? It's not like the hard drive where you have your files stored.
    As a sidenote: make sure they flash the new logic board with your serial number; otherwise your computer will suddenly not have one. That involves a special tool they insert into a USB port and it goes directly to some apple site where that board is then registered with your serial number.

  • Replacing the Logic Board on an iMac G4 (flat panel)

    Hi all
    A friend of mine has a G4 Flat Panel iMac, and apparently, though I've not seen it for myself yet, her Logic Board died on her. She has since bought an iMac G5. But I've been trying to find where one can get a replacement logic board from, that isn't going to break the bank. I've found nothing so far. Are these available anywhere? And will they be so expensive as to make it not worth the bother? And of course I have not found any technical data about how you open and replace components in one of these iMacs. Apple don't post them since they are supposed to be tampered with only by Apple certified technicians.

    Apple doesn't typically make their repair components available to the end-user. So, it's a bit harder to find a replacement logic-board for one of their computers.
    The service centers can get them, but it's not going to be cheap.
    Typically, you can expect to pay $500 to $800 for a replacement logic-board from Apple.
    And, the service center is only going to sell it to you if you let them install it.
    But, you can sometimes find places that sell them.
    This place used to sell lots of Apple logic-boards, case parts, brackets, keyboards, etc. But, they stopped for some reason. But, you might call and see if they have what you need in a warehouse somewhere:

    And, this place does sell some parts for the Do-It-Youself person. But, they typically require you to send in your system for a new logic-board. But, you might be able to get a price from them:

    In all honesty, if you are looking for a part you can install yourself, and don't want to pay $500 or more, then you are probably better-off trying to find a used part.
    If you can find one who's screen died, but the logic-board is still good on, then you may be able to work out a deal. I hate to recommend them, but e-bay is probably your best chance for a used replacement logic-board. Just don't pay too much.
    Whatever route you / they choose, keep in-mind the price of a low-end Mac Mini. Don't spend more to repair an old system than you would spend to buy a current low-end system.

  • Facetime issue - after installing a new logic board due to liquid damage.

    I installed a new logic board this week.. after installing the os x operation system and then upgrading it to mavericks and i used migration assistant to load my backuped user from an external disk.
    I tried to log in using my apple id ( which is verified) it couldn't log in beacuse "could not sign in. please check your network connection and try again"
    and i did all the updates of mavericks. i tried also before installing mavericks i thougt upgrading will fix it..
    i saw on forums that i should add 2 DNS's (8888 and 8844) didn't work.
    i tried connection to my phones hotspot - didn't work.
    i also went to the firewall thing to allow it recieve cennections..
    pleassee help!!

    My problem solved could possiblly be your solution: Check to make sure your system serial number is being read by your logic baord.  If the tech forgot to reenter the serial number, it's a known issue for Facetime and Messages (apparantly not know enough yet though, no tech bulliten exists on the topic).
    I spent several days trouble shooting my inablility to login to my account with Facetime or Messages (other cloud services worked) after upgrading to Mavericks.  I went as far as doing a clean install on my hard drive after spending two hours with a baffled mac tech in a retail store and many hours searching the message boards.
    I have never had a logic board (or hard drive) replaced on my Macbook Air, but somehow after the Mavericks update the logic board stopped reading the serial number on my system.  It took a call to Apple and a ticket opened to engineering to figure this out (after I uploaded log files).
    They were puzzled I experienced this without a logic board replacement, but it was indeed the root cause of the facetime and messages apps failing to log in, and said they'd run in to it recently more than once.
    Wish I knew how to post this unbiquitously across all the boards for folks to troubleshoot by simply looking at their system info in the Apple menu; Apple scheduled an appointment for me at an Apple genius bar and it was fixed in fifteen minutes.

  • New logic board, still boot problems with Turbo Fans

    I bought a 2Ghz dual G5 from a guy on craigslist and he told me that the Geniuses at the Apple Store said it had a bad logic board. So I bought a brand new logic board from DVwarehouse.com, and installed it along with a new set of matched RAM from Crucial, a new HD, new PRAM battery, new video card and a new superdrive. The only thing original are the processors and power supply (and fans, of course).
    When I start it up, after the chime it quickly goes into "turbo-fan mode", which I have read that means the Op Sys didn't load correctly. Many restarts later, I was able to reset the nvram in the Open Firmware, but that didn't seem to help at all. I also pressed the SMU button (according to Apple's directions), but that didn't help much either.
    I've had a few successful boots, but always with the fans going full blast. I though that once I got Leopard loaded onto the HD, then it would calm down with a software update. But before I ever get that far, the G5 hangs. Sometimes the G5 will boot and access the HD but hangs soon after. Sometimes I can get it to boot off the Leopard DVD. But most of the time it just boots and sits there slowly spinning up the fans into turbo mode.
    The few times it has booted to access the HD or DVD, the fans go turbo right away. Other times it will boot with a chime, but then it won't access the HD or DVD and I get noting on the display.
    I should say that this behavior is almost identical to how it was acting before I replaced the logic board. But how can that be? It should be a new computer, unless the problem is in the CPUs. Is that very likely? How would I find out if the CPUs are bad?
    I've been reading alot about the problems I'm having with this G5 and what I've been having seems to be very common. But I've run out of fixes. Is there anything I can do to fix this machine or is it just money down the drain?

    my iMac 20" G5 experience since December 2004, even though I love this machine,it has gone through 3 power supply (661-3350) replacements and 3 logic board replacement since late 2004. Pretty crazy for a single machine but I still love it. The last logic board replacement did NOT fix my boot up problem, as I expected, and the genius finally agreed to replace the power supply and that fixed it.   • MacBook Pro HDD and logic board connection

    Hi! Recently my 1.5 year old MacBook Pro hanged while I was watching a movie. So I had to force shutdown the machine. On restarting, I was routed to "System Utilities" and I observed that there was some issue with the hard drive. I could not repair the hard drive myself with the disk utilities system. And therefore,I took it to the Apple service center wherein on preliminary diagnosis they said that hard drive is gone. A day later they say that the connection between the hard drive and the logic board is gone and so I need to replace the hard drive and the logic board as well (cost of which is equivalent to a new non-apple notebook). I read several discussions on "apple forums" and learnt that there is a cable connection between the hard drive and the logic board. But the service guy says that there is some other "socket connection" which is gone while the cable is all fine. I am not able to understand if there are two types of connection between the hdd and the logic board. I have not come across similar problem with anyone and somehow I feel that this service guy cannot help Me. I also fail to understand that how can one access the disk utility system if the logic board (or the heart of the laptop) is gone!!!!! The notebook was always very carefully handled with no jerk and or spillage issue. It has always worked perfectly fine with the software updated to the latest available. Please help!!

    To test if it is the connection, one can connect a known functional boot drive externally via USB and if it boots the MBP, then there is an internal connection problem.  There are differences in how the SSD is mounted in a retina MBP.  Look at these videos:

    If you have the 13" MBP, it indicates that the mounting and connection assembly may have to be replaced.  If it is a 15" MBP, it indicates that the logic board may have to be replaced.

    Hi there, I have seen a few other posts related to this, but figured I would ask for any info on my situation & sad story in these tighter economic times.
    I have: Mac G5 Tower, PPC 2.0 Ghz (late 2004)
    It has run fine for me since i bought it, not a single issue or problem. Obviously, it is out of warranty & apple care, and in fact, Apple will cease supporting this model in Oct '09.
    The computer fails to boot up, brought to Apple Store & was told "logic board AND processor need to be replaced". Cost to replace 764 (logic board) +764 (processor) +135 (labor) = a lot of money for an older machine!
    Personally, I did not believe this... i have burned logic boards before, but never a processor. I asked them if i could attempt to just replace the logic board, if that worked, just pay for that... if not, have the part returned (restocking fee only).
    In my area, there is an independent mac store, that offered a quote of 570 (logic board)+ 100 labor. This is still a high price for an older machine. The indy shop is still a lot.... my same computer sells on ebay used for roughly the same price as the indy repair.
    As I know what is specifically is wrong, has anyone had any experiences buying parts like logic boards online? I see some listed on ebay for like $240.
    Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed with this? Certainly, buying the cheap used parts can be dangerous... or not solve the problem, or whatever...
    In the present economy, I hope to get a bit more 'life' out of my G5 before replacing it... but really I dont think it is worth paying more than $300ish under the circumstances.

    Sudden Logic Board Failure(LBF Syndrome) is a pandemic everywhere you read the boards. The G5 processors or logic boards or power supplies were really terrible on these machines.
    If you want to escalate, you have to DEMAND that you speak to a higher tech manager. Apparently, they will pay for it all if you raise Cain. I'm a fan of Mac products, and my g4 laptop 17" is the best darn thing I ever bought I think.
    -Software upgrades with Power management fixes nuked my g5 the first round
    -Everytime I unplugged the machine and took it to the AppleStore the PMU reset and the machine behaved better
    -I took it in 3 times, they could not diagnose the issue
    -After a week, the machine would never boot without the option key
    -After living with the option key, the machine would have spontaneous shutdowns
    -I cleaned the interior, and that was OK for a month or 2.
    -The machine would have kernal panics after that
    -then the UNIX code would spew on screen
    -then it wouldn't boot at all, even with OS CDs
    -Gray apple only-then fans of glory would kick in.
    So, what happened? I can only guess since Genius Bar didn't help me is:
    -g5 chips ran so hot and energy management ate the Power Manager(they went to Intel because Power PC g5 would have set laptops on fire)
    -Constant shutdowns thanks to Power Manager fragged the PMU. The UPS I bought helped for 6 months...sort of.
    -The above ate the LOGIC board(bad PMUs do BAD things to Boards and RAM)
    -Once the power manager starts getting irregular, the machine kernal panics because of cooling issues or RAM panics and eventually everything corrupts and the poor voltage management destroys the machine.
    Mac techs blamed my house voltage, but the electrician tested it and it was fine. The PMU is supposed to smooth amps and volt spikes but it did such a bad job I suspect it shorted or blasted major components.
    I'm getting a new Imac which has it's own problems-I don't think the g5 is worth saving but Apple should give a rebate or refund prorated for the years it was used. It's a very bad representative of Apple products and they should be ashamed that they hid or submerged the issue. I think so many software updates dealt with Power management(ie:energy saving) because Logic boards were blowing sky high exponentially.

  • Replaced logic board on MacBook Pro; now I must reauthorize!

    I've just synched my iPhone with my MacBook Pro which came back today after having its logic board replaced under the nVidia issue recall program. But I am not that comfortable with the idea that I've now used up 2 of my 5 computers for apps/songs etc.
    What can I do? I imagine that I need to inform Apple to de-authorize my previous logic board. But how?

    If you weren't able to de-authorize your MBP before sending it in for the logic board to be replaced, I don't believe you can reset or de authorize all currently authorized computers until you reach or authorize 5 computers. You can then do a complete reset or de-authorize all authorized computers followed by re-authorizing the computer you are currently using.

  • Installed a new logic board, Woo Hoo!-Except...

    except that the computer won't turn on. I pressed the power button and the light didn't stay on and the screen never came on.
    I seem to recall hearing about this happening after logic board replacement but don't recall what the solution/remedy was.
    Otherwise, the replacement was pretty easy as Japamac had said, so thanks for the help!

    Testing needs to be done with the PSU connector connected to the logic board.
    Jamb the tester probes in the back side of the connector, along side the wire, to get the probe down to the pin for proper contact.
    Oh, make sure the PRAM battery is installed properly (plus and minus properly oriented).

  • Logic Board has failed 3 times...2011 MB Pro 15 Inch

    So I have recently had a ton of issues with my MacBook and it is really starting to get annoying. I had my logic board replaced in March of this year. The repair cost me around $350 as the warranty was up. The logic board failed again at the end of August. I brought it back in to the apple store and they replaced the logic board again, but for free this time. I was extremely impressed with their customer service, they even replaced my display which had a small crack. Everything worked good as new until last night. Once again the same issues as before, so obviously they logic board has failed for a third time, which is a little ridiculous in my opinion. I will be taking it in to the apple store after work today to see what's going on.
    Three logic boards in the span of half a year can't be normal...Is this a sign of some other issue? Is it time to ditch this POS and get a PC? Could it be something I'm doing on my end? I rely heavily on my laptop for work and need something that consistently works. Apple's customer service has been top notch through all of this, however the actual product has not been. I would love to hear other's opinions/experiences with similar issues.

    Perhaps - and I mean PERHAPS - you'll be offered a replacement unit this time around: it all depends on how the manager is feeling that day. A number of 2011 models have had three logic board replacements and USUALLY the fourth time around, folks are offered a new replacement unit.
    Don't count on it but if it comes down to pleading with a manager, DO IT!

  • Liquid found on logic board

    Hi all!
    Basically I had to get my battery replaced today, and after they replaced it they said they found liquid on the logic board and 2 other places (I did spill some water over it a couple of weeks ago). I'm now wondering whether it is worth replacing or not... my laptop does seem to be working fine, but the apple person said it could gradually get worse. The only problem is, is its going to cost £430 to replace, and I'm finding it hard to part with that money while it's currently working fine! what are the chances it will get worse? Do you think I should just bite the bullet as I probably will have to do it sooner or later?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    I don't recommend people to continue using their MacBooks Pro if they have spilled liquid because their computers may fail at any moment.
    If you spilt liquid a long time ago, you can consider the option to continue using your computer and just make backups to make sure that your files are safe, but it's dangerous because something may happen to your computer. The safest way is to have your logic board replaced, but it's up to you

  • After logic board replaced- SystemSerialNumb listed as serial number

    I just noticed this.. I had my logic board replaced a few months ago. Now when I go to About This Mac, it lists my serial number as: SystemSerialNumb
    The number is no longer there. I read about someone else who this happened to. Is there anyway to get the serial number back? I have it printed on my AppleCare.
    The problem is now, if I can't prove this is my system, the one stated in Apple Care, how do I resolve that isse? Will I be able to ever get Apple Care for this computer?

    I have a little trick for you below. But, first I'll explain how this feature works and why it doesn't.
    The serial number you were seeing in the System Profiler is written into a chip on the logic board.
    But, when they refurbish a logic board, they clear out this serial number. Since they have no way of knowing which system it's going to be installed in next, they do not re-program another number into the logic board.
    So, when you get your refurbished logic-board installed, that location that contains the serial number is cleared.
    Apple will often reprogram the number into the logic board on complete systems that they refurbish. But, it is not common for them to do it on the individual logic-boards.
    Unfortunately, the only way to get it to display in system profiler again, is to re-program that serial number back into the logic board. And, Apple is the only one with that tool.
    But, you can continue to use the serial number that is printed on the foot of your computer for all warranty related items. That number is still your "official" serial number. So, the number you use has not changed. It is just not visible in your System Profiler.
    Now, there is a little trick to make your serial number display in the "About this Mac" window.
