Mail doesn't auto receive email

I just setup my mother-in-law's new iMac's email. It is setup to use imap and everything seems to working correctly. However, it will only receive email once Mail is closed (Quit) and reopened. It will not automatically receive email while it is open.
I have tried setting up the pop version of the email but it also does the same thing.
Anyone out there with any suggestions?

Thank you for your...reply.
I've tried that, thus the reason of asking why it isn't working. I've also tried the manual "Get Mail" button. The only way that mail is recieved, is if Mail is Quit/closed and then reopened. Once reopened, all test emails start flooding in. Sending mail isn't an issue.

  • Mail app crashes when receiving email from a particular sender

    HI All,
Here is a problem I'm facing, Mail App crashes while receiving email from a particular sender. I'm testing our new Email Hosting solution "Rackspace" and it works fine with all other Email clients or on deveices (Android, Windows Phone & Blackbarry) but on Iphone 4s (IOS 6.1.4, i guess) it crashes the Mail App.
The email I'm using is sending over to an email at ttv-asia.com domain. The user of ttv-asia.com is based in China and just to see if the problem is with the Iphone, I've tested the Iphone's Mail App in Hong Kong and it works normal.
So now... Im confused and have no Idea on how ro fix this.

Sorted, it seems that livemail configured for exchange and having Google premier for exchange, results in the mail app on the iPhone crashing, when selecting an email in the Google exchange mail box, then calling up the folders , it crashes. switched off livemail mail, worked fine.
    Weird.
Google vs Microsoft, with a little help from Apple ???????????

  • Mail doesn't display full email text, only displays the subject line

Mail doesn't display full email text, only displays the subject line.
My preview shows first three lines of email, but when I chose the email specifically mail doesn't display any lines of text.  Been this way for about ten days.  Please help.  Ben

Awesome.  Rebooting the phone worked.  I had never turned the phone off before (for the next guy - you hold down the "sleep" button for longer than you'd think and that'll do a full shutdown).  thank you for your help.

  • Mail 6.0 Not Receiving Email

    Hi there,
I've been hounding my ISP, BigPond, for the past several weeks due to not being able to get Mail 6.0 to receive email (I should add, sends just fine). They've tried everything with no joy. Have also had Apple support on the phone... got them stumped too.
Tried alternative, i.e. gone with Gmail and experiencing exactly the same issue - email sending OK, receiving is just not going to work. Definitely something to do with Mac Mail.
Should I be taking my Mac back to the store or is there some OS tweak that someone can help me with?
I have followed the settings outlined on both the BigPond and Gmail web sites. Even tried the IMAP vs POP configurations. Any help appreciated.

    Okay - I fixed it.  Here's what I did.
    - Deleted the entire mail folder inside my Preferences folder.  ~/Library/<userfolder>
    - Kept the files in the trash just in case, but didn't need them
    - Rebooted
    - Opened the System Preferences
    - Selected "Mail, Contacts & Calendars"
    - Verified the previous account was gone
    - Clicked Create
    - Created a new account and then opened Mail
    - Voila! Email
Note - if you trash the mail folder inside Preferences, it will delete any local emails.  All my email is IMAP and I never store anything locally, so everything syched right back when the account was recreated.
    Good luck.  Hope this helps.

  • One Yahoo! mail account does not receive email sent from .mac

OK, this is an odd problem, and any help would be appreciated.
My girlfriend's Yahoo! mail account does not receive email sent from my .mac address. If I send email from my Gmail or Yahoo! accounts she receives the message. No one else has informed me that they haven't received email from the .mac address. Additionally, the .mac account is in her address book.
Anyway, has anyone seen a similar pattern with Yahoo! or any other email provider?
    Thanks.
    - Jennings

Thanks for the reply . . . and yes, the recipient's email provider likely holds the answer.
However, I was hoping someone here might have had a similar experience and could answer as the email provider is Yahoo, and they are slow in responding to help requests . . . for a period I hosted a personal, paid website through Yahoo Domains and help tickets lingered for several days on multiple occasions (this being the reason the site is no longer hosted by Yahoo). I also doubt Yahoo will expend too much energy resolving a problem for a free email account.
Anyway, I posted in the Yahoo mail forums, and hopefully something will come-up . . . .

  • Mail v7.2 rule doesn't forward received emails

I am attempting to write a Mail rule to automatically forward all emails I receive from our HOA to my wife.  I am able to creat rules that correctly intercept emails from our HOA and move them to seperate mailboxes, but I am unable to forward emails either as a second step in a mail rule or as a stand alone rule.

This doesn't work for me.  I can get a rule to correctly identify a received email from a specified source, but I cannot get a rule to forward the email.  I have written test rules that moves an email to a specified mailbox so I know the correct identification of incoming emails  and the 2nd action is working, but when I then attempt to change the test rule so that the 2nd function forwards the email and that does not work.

  • Can't create new mail or reply to received emails

I haven't changed anything on mail but suddenly 2 weeks ago when I clicked on new(mail) - nothing happened and its the same with reply or reply all or forward. Eventually the "whirly thing" comes on and I have to force quit.
    I can receive emails ok.
    Please help.

    Hi Stanley
I tried what you said regarding the disk permissions but its still the same. The thing is I can't actually create an email to send so I can't try the second option you suggested.
When I click on New Mail and nothing happens - the box doesn't even appear for me to start typing then eventually the whirly thing comes on and I have to force quit Mail. In the Force Quit Applications box it has Mail then in brackets Not responding.
My ISP is virgin and its Mac Mail and its a POP account.

  • Mail: change subject of received email?

In Mail 4.5, is it possible to change the Subject line of received email in the Inbox?

Re:  "feature requests should be addressed to Apple": That would probbbly be easier for benfrommo if Americans were even HALF as tolerant of foreigners struggling to express themselves in English as they are of Americans struggling to express themselves in their native language.
Re: This ongoing problem with Mail:  Returning to the thread topic, the inability to edit the subject line of incoming e-mail is a complaint that has been frequently voiced in the Apple's "support" forums and other Mac-centric sites since Mail 1.0 was released in 2003.
I've been using Eudora since OS 7, way back when you actually had to buy it. I tried Mail when it first came out, but not being able to edit the subject line was a deal-breaker for me, so I went back to Eudora. (Apple's "version 1" software is frequently not ready for prime time.  Keynote 1.x was horrible!  When Keynote 2 came out, Apple should have sent a free update to all version 1 purchasers, along with an apology for making them put up with such merda [another Italian word]. But I digress...)
Yesterday I  launched the latest version of Mail. You can imagine my surprise to discover that I could STILL not edit the subject line, as almost every other mail program allows. So here we are, 9 years and 4 major versions after Mail was first released (and the complaints began), and the problem has yet to be resolved. If Apple had the slightest inclination to address this "feature request," they would have done so by now.

  • Can't Open Mail Via Safari or Receive Emails - iCloud Down?

I have 2 iCloud accounts, one for my family and one personal account.  My wife also has her own personal account.  2 of the 3 accounts are working fine but my personal account is having issues where I can send emails from mobile devices but not receive any emails.  In addition, when I go to www.icloud.com to login and click on the Mail app, it circulates for a minute or so and then gives me an error saying "Cannot open Mail".
Is there some sort of outage that effects certain accounts? I've also already had some people report to me that emails they've sent me have bounced back to them.
    Any ideas/suggestions?
    Thanks

  • TS3276 Mac Mail on Lion stopped receiving emails on 1 of 3 accounts, but not showing any errors. I can still receive on iPad

I have 3 POP accounts set up on my MacBook Pro all witht eh same provider. No problem sending email. Then the main account suddenly does not receive any email. No error messages and I only worked this out when no emails ther ein the monring. Checking on webmail and on iPad I see lots of emails but then why is the MacBook not getting them. The other 2 accounts work perfectly OK.
    No settings have been changed
    A big puzzle!

    I found the problem.
I had a 21 MB email sent to me. Mac Mail obviously was unable to get it due to some form of time out (but no error messages) and since this one could not be downloaded it prevented everything else after it to be downloaded.
Surprisingly the iPad + iPhone showed the headers and thus allowed all other emails to be also displayed after it.
Deleting this big email from webmail cleared the way.
    Problem solved

  • Mac mail doesn't connect to emails

    Hi everyone,
Ever since I updated to Mavericks, my emails don't connect to Mac Mail.
I tried deleting the email addresses/accounts and adding them back in but now it doesn't connect at all.
I have gmail and hotmail and am not sure what I should be setting my Incoming and outgoing servers as.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!!
    -Judy

It attempts to set the servers.  After a long period of waiting, it gives me the message that it has to be configured manually.
urm...ok so after deleting the accounts and attempting to add it back on, it doesn't initially "work".  I restarted my macbook and now it works.
macmail has reset the incoming and outgoing servers:
    gmail:
    hotmail:
but then I have another hotmail account and it shows:
I hope it continues to work.  My mailbox has been working on/off for the past week or so...
    Thanks!!

  • Mail not sending or receiving emails

my mail refuses to receive or send any emails,it just stopped working all of a sudden

It's possible you need to login and change your passwords. The recent Heartbleed bug has required many users to change their passwords. Regardless it's a good idea to change your passswords at least once a year for security.
Open the Connection Doctor under Window when Mail is active.
You should see green lights to show accounts are connected.
You will see two entires for most accounts. One for sending (SMTP) and the other for receiving. iCloud accounts only show up as one entry.
If you see a red light you can select to Show Details button to find why you are having problems connecting.
Receiving is set in the main window for the account. Change your password then click out of the account to save.
Sending password is set in Edit SMTP. Select the account from the list. Under Advanced, add the password.
Note, sometimes you will find extra SMTP settings listed. Deleting an account does delete the SMTP settings. You can delete these.

  • Mail problem- can't receive email

    Hi-
We have two email accounts (through Comcast) and all of a sudden, only one account has the spinning wheel of endlessness, like it's trying to retrieve mail but never stops. The other account is fine. Both accounts can send mail successfully, and if we go on Comcast's webmail access, we can see the new mail that is not making it to the Mail program. Also, we have to Force Quit Mail. I called Comcast, and they had us change some server port numbers, but that didn't help, and then they referred us to you. Please help.

Hi RivaPhoto, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Quit Mail.
First, Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move the following folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
