Mail outgoing server is screwy - won't let me send from anywhere but home

Sorry for the long subject. Ok, so I have 3 email accounts through Mail, gmail (POP), my school (POP) and .mac
My outgoing mail server is through my wireless router which is great when i am at home but when i am out in a coffeehouse or at work, it won't send messages. Is there a way to just use a generic outgoing mail server so that I can send these messages from Mail?

How is your Mail preferences set up for outgoing? Port 25? No authentication? SSL checkbox not checked? And I assume you mean that you can send email when you are at home when your computer is affiliated to your wireless router, not that you specified 192.168.1.1 or whatever as your smtp server in Mail's setup. If your outgoing mail server is through an email account provided by your ISP, they frequently do not require authentication because they can authenticate on the fact that your IP address belongs to their pool of IP addresses -- when you are at home. But when you aren't home, then you are trying to relay mail from a "foreign" IP address through their server -- and if the mail isn't going to one of their accounts, they block those, otherwise every spammer in the universe would be relaying spam through their servers. I would try changing your outgoing mail config to port 587 with username/password authentication and SSL checkbox checked. I would try similar changes on the incoming side, SSL checked and port 993 if imap or 995 if pop -- if you leave it 143 or 110 without SSL then your incoming mail traffic, including you sending your password, is done "in the clear." The SSL settings should work whether you are at home or on the road. If they don't work, contact your email provider and ask them how to set up a common configuration that works from home and anywhere else.

I am using mail with an external mail server. I have two accounts on the same server. For some reason when I send from my primary account at my house it works fine. If I am anywhere else it will not send email. The secondary account does not have this problem. any idea why this might be happening and how to correct the problem?

if two accounts on the same server and one works, then you aren't having network issues.
It's possible that a particular message you're sending is tripping blacklists. if the subject or content has the keywords that trigger a rejection, that might be your explanation. Use test emails..
Next, I'd look to see if the accounts are configured the same. It might be that the server location works with your DNS at home, but when away, it doesn't resolve. Check to make sure the evil account matches the good one.
If this is a large service provider (gmail, yahoo, aol) it shouldn't matter, but a small personal server might have different server side rules for each account. I run a server and it has the option to require that the mail come from the same domain as the account. That makes the account incapable of sending while the account owner is out of the network.

Imac (Flat Panel) won't let me reboot from anything but hard drive! HELP !!

I was given an iMac flatpanel. Trying to erase hard drive and reinstall OS 10.2. The computer will not let me reboot from ANY cd or dvd. Tried everything, including an external firewire dvd-rom, and putting my macbook pro in target mode. (the message is that the imac doesn't recognize the HD and wants to initialize it!) I've zapped the PRAM, started in safe mode, I'M EXHAUSTED! Any idea how I can reinitialize the HD and start over?

The problem is one of the following:
Your SMTP server is provided by a carrier which only allows the outgoing mail server to be used when you are connected to their network. Receiving emails will always work, but sending emails will only work when you are connected via their connection;
Your SMTP server is down - contact your email provider

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

What I recommend you try doing first is to turn iMessage off then back on. If that doesn't work, make sure that your Apple ID and password are correct. If everything seems correct and you still can't send out messages using iMessage instead of text message, I think you should either try calling AppleCare at 1-800-MY-IPHONE (1-800-694-7466) and/or scheduling an appointment at the Genius Bar at an Apple Store (that is, if there's one close to you).

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.

Use the link to contact the iTunes Store staff in the 'Additional Information' section of that article; if you didn't previously set up a valid rescue email address, which isn't the same as an alternate email address, only Apple itself can assist with recovering lost answers.

Sounds like an issue with your carrier. You might check with them to see if they're having problems with MMS. You could always try resetting the phone if your haven't already but it's a long shot (hold on/off and home buttons simultaneously for 10-15 seconds until you see the Apple logo, release and wait for the phone to restart). Good luck!
