Mailbox naming issue

I went to rename some folders within my mail box with all caps so they'd be easier/quicker to spot (I have things organized in higher level folders like work, personal, etc. and then have subfolders within each of those). Some renamed fine but some gave me an error that reads: Mail was unable to rename "~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/WORK/photography". Those that give me that error make a copy of the folder & subfolders with the original folder being white and the new one (or the renamed copy) being blue like the other mail folders. I deleted one of the white versions but that caused all the subfolders in the new one to be deleted and that material can not be found anywhere. What am I doing wrong? I don't want to delete all the "white" originals and lose material in my "new renamed" folders but now I have two folders of all this stuff and my original goal of helping my organization is made worst. Is this making any sense? Thanks!

This appears to be a bug that I’ve seen reported here many times, but haven’t looked into it myself.
If the messages are not on the server and you don’t have a backup, you may try to salvage as many deleted .emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II or FileSalvage. Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted .emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using the computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.
What follows below is an explanation that may allow you to better understand what happened but won’t make the deleted messages to reappear...
<hr>
Take a look at the following article first for an explanation of what blue and white Mail folders are from a user’s point of view:
Blue and white Mail folders explained
Mail allows the same folder to behave as both a mailbox (i.e. contain messages of its own) and as a parent folder (i.e. contain other folders and mailboxes). Although such folders appear as a single folder in Mail, there is a different folder in the filesystem to support each aspect of this duality.
The mailbox functionality is provided by an .mbox or an .imapmbox folder in the filesystem, depending on whether the mailbox is stored locally on the computer or it’s a cached server-stored IMAP mailbox. Mail 2.x mailboxes should contain just an Info.plist file that may or may not be present and a Messages folder with an .emlx file for each message stored in that mailbox.
The parent folder functionality is provided by a folder without suffix in the filesystem. They shouldn't contain any messages of their own. For .emlx files to be recognized by Mail, they must be in a Messages folder within an .mbox or an .imapmbox folder.
If only the folder without suffix exists, Mail shows it as a white folder in the mailbox list (i.e. a folder that cannot contain messages of its own). If a folder with an .mbox or an .imapmbox suffix exists, it appears in Mail as a blue folder, regardless of whether a corresponding folder without the suffix exists as well. That is, for each blue folder in Mail there is a corresponding .mbox or .imapmbox folder and maybe also a folder without suffix in the filesystem, whereas for each white folder in Mail there can only be a folder without suffix in the filesystem.
Mail has some bugs & glitches when it comes to reorganizing mailboxes, more so if dual folders are involved. Things usually work better if each folder behaves as either a mailbox (blue) or as a parent folder (white), but not both (blue).
The problem you’ve experienced is probably also related to the fact that, in addition to being two actual folders in the filesystem associated with the single folder that Mail shows in the mailbox list, the filesystem that Mac OS X uses by default is case-preserving but case-insensitive, which means it preserves how file names are written, but treats file names that differ in capitalization only as if they were the same.
What appears to have happened is that one of the two folders in the filesystem initially associated with the folder that you renamed in Mail was successfully renamed while the other wasn’t, and that confused Mail about the duality of the folder and what to display where — note that the nested folders should have been displayed within the white folder, not within the blue one.
The thing is, Mail was clearly not working properly, so you shouldn’t have tried to “fix” the problem by deleting anything, at least not without making a backup first, or at the very least a copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, which is very easy to do.
A workaround for this bug would be renaming the folder to something different first, then renaming it to what you want, i.e. avoid changing only the capitalization of the name — but of course that requires knowing that Mail has this bug in the first place...
<hr>
You may be able to fix what hasn’t been deleted yet by quitting Mail and manually renaming in the Finder one the folders of each pair, so that the capitalization of each pair of folders matches exactly again. Not sure whether it would be better to change the name of the folder that was successfully renamed back to the original name or the other way around — I’d try restoring the original name.
Be sure to make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder first, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the Mail folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Can you have a mailbox named Admin AND a postfix alias named Admin that goes to one or more other actual mailboxes?

    My question is re: Mail service in Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server 10.6. Can you have an actual mailbox named Admin AND a postfix alias named Admin that goes to one or more other actual mailboxes?  Or is only one or ther other?  I have customer who currently has a bunch of mailboxes (info, admin, etc.) and those that need access to it do so via Mail client, etc.  Now they are asking about aliases so they dont have to all access same mailbox, requiring setup, etc.  Do I have to delete actual mailboxes in order to create Postfix aliases (admin, info, etc) or can they coexist?
    Thanx in advance,
    Eric

    Thanx Camelot.
    Leads to me more questions, if you would be so kind.  The client uses Virtual Hosts on Mac OS X Server and the aliases they desire are all @virtual_domain.com.  So, do I create aliases via /etc/postfix/virtual or via /etc/postfix/aliases.  As I said before, they desire aliases that go to at least 2 if not more actual local server accounts/mailboxes, but aliases are @virtual_domain.com.
    For example: admin is local account on server @ main_domain.com.  Now they want alias admin@virtual_domain.com that goes to local accounts Bob, Susan, etc.
    Thanx again!

  • [naming issue] how to call a method...

    Now, this may sound silly, but believe me, for a non-english guy sometimes those naming issues are really serious (especially when you know someone else is to see your code). So what I'm doing is a network simulation software (my b.sc. project). How would you call a method that takes traffic into a queue/network node (let's call it METHOD1 for now) and a method that pushes that traffic out (METHOD2). It's more or less like this:
    class TransmissionLine{
       private Node node1;
       private Node node2;
       public void performAction(){
          node1.METHOD1(node2.METHOD2());
          node2.METHOD1(node1.METHOD2());
    }Right now they are called TrafficUnit push(), and void pull(TrafficUnit tu). Seems good for me since the first pushes its traffic out, and the second pulls it in, but I dont know - it doesn't sound pro ;) Please let me now what you think and what would you call them. Thanks!
    Best Regards,
    M.

    I think when you're talking about some functionality that links two classes together, one of which needs to generate data and the other which needs to receive data, send and receive is probably still a good choice. Even if you're not talking about a network, you're talking about two independent parts of a system. Think of them as little machines that build up your program, and that might give you a good idea of how you should name them.
    On the other hand, if you're just looking for readable code, pick something that makes sense to you if you were describing the method to someone else, and then make sure you write clear comments. Even if you pick a name that's not perfect, the comments will make up for it. Something like:
      * Gets the traffic coming in so that it can be processed.
      * @param node The sending node
      * @return The traffic data from the sending node
    public TrafficData pull(TrafficUnit node)
      * Sends the traffic data out to the target after processing.
    public void push()
    ..This will always be better than...
    public TrafficData receive(TrafficUnit node)
    public void send()
    ...

  • Mailbox Rules issue

    I have made 'rules' to ensure all newly received email is automatically placed into relevant mailboxes. Works nicely. However the same can't be said about mail I send. Instead of placing mail I send into 'Sent', I would like it to be automatically placed into the mailbox of the person I am sending it to, along with the mail I receive from them.
    Eg. If I receive mail from Fred, it is automatically placed into the mailbox named 'Fred's Mailbox. When I send mail to Fred, the copy is automatically into 'Sent Mailbox' rather 'Fred's Mailbox.
    If I make a rule that says Put messages to Fred into 'Fred's Mailbox', Mail searches & finds all the messages I've sent to Fred & places them into 'Fred's Mailbox (from 'Sent Mailbox'). However this only seems to work as a 'one-off'. The next time I send mail to Fred, the copy goes to 'Sent Mailbox' again, & none to 'Fred's Mailbox'.
    It was like this under Tiger on my powerbook, & still the same in Leopard on my Macbook Pro. Have I missed something? Is this a known bug?
    Hoping someone may shed some light on this.
    Thanks
    Cuppa
    cuppa500.com

    Rules are applied automatically to incoming messages. They are not applied automatically to outgoing messages.
    You could set up a smart mailbox for Fred, but this would not get the sent messages out of the Sent mailbox. Alternatively you could set up an Applescript to move messages to Fred from the Sent box to the Fred box, and run it on a timer, or even have it run every time there is any incoming message.

  • Weird iTunes naming issue

    So I've got this bizarre naming issue in iTunes that is driving me crazy. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Occasionally, and somewhat randomly, when I drag a folder of mp3's into my iTunes, it automatically adds a square [that wingding-looking symbol that usually denotes an unreadable character] to the end of every song, artist name, and album. Renaming wouldn't be a big problem, except it won't seem to work. When I go into the file info and try to rename, there's (1) no square that shows up in any of the fields for me to delete, and (2) no effect even if I retype each song, artist, album, etc.
    It's driving me nuts, because especially in the artist field, iTunes reads the artist name with the square at the end as a different artist, which has the effect of making my library and iPod a mess.
    I would be incredibly grateful for any help that anyone could provide. I'm going nuts trying to figure it out. Thanks in advance.

    A certain number of Genres are hard wired into the app and can't be gotten rid of. However, all you need is one track to be given a genre like - Hip-Hop Classical Opera - for that to turn up in the genre list. The best way to track these down is to use the Browser (apple-b). Selecting a genre in the left hd column will list the tracks that carry that genre, and you can then edit them using the apple-i command.

  • Batch Exporting File Naming Issue

    I have to batch export about 30 images at a time, but I am having an issue now that the "Export" piece of the action includes a specific file name in the "save in" property, where as it's supposed to only include the name of the containing folder. This causes all the images included in the batch to be saved with the same file name thus saving over the previous export each time. I cannot figure out how to execute the Save for Web and devices action without it recording the specific file name.
    My process is:
    - Open one image
    - Create a new Action (it begins recording)
    - Crop the image
    - Save for Web and devices (I leave the file name as is, but save it to a different folder) Ex. "annoying_child_screaming.jpeg"
    - Close without saving
    - Stop the action
    - File > Automate > Batch
    - I select the source folder with all the original photos
    - Specify a Destination folder (a different folder where all the cropped ones will be)
    - I don't select any checkboxes
    - File Naming: I leave the default "Document Name" + "extension" Starting serial#: 1
    When I hit okay, I can see Photoshop going through each image and doing the specified actions, but instead of preserving the original file name, it saves each one with the file name that I saved the first one when originally creating the action (Ex. it rewrites "annoying_child_screaming.jpeg" for each file)
    I just upgraded to CS5 from CS4 (where I hadn't been having this problem). I have compared my settings to a coworker's who's computer it does work on, but we can't figure out what's wrong. The difference is in the Export details in the Actions dialog box - where it has the "IN" property, usually only a folder location is specified, but on my comp, it also specifies the file name.
    Please help.

    When you record the save for web step use the original file name
    (you noted you did that in post 1)
    Is the name you used the same as the file
    you opened when recording the save for web step?
    Don't specify any destination in the batch dialog or the files will possibly
    be overwritten and you'll see the results your seeing.
    The destination is the folder you specified during the save for web step while recording the action.

  • Exchange 2007 - Exchange 2013 Mailbox Migration Issues

    Exchange 2013 -  Mail Flow is working.   OWA Access is great.   We have issues connecting Outlook 2010 Clients.  If I create a new user and mailbox Outlook 2010 works fine.   However, if we migrate a user's mailbox to the new Exchange
    2013 server.  Outlook Web (OWA) works and mail flow but "OUTLOOK 2010 can not connect to the new server"  There is something different about a newly created account and a migrated account.  Any help would be great.   I did check
    inheritance in AD and it was on for these accounts.  This occurs with any account migrated to the new server.

    1. Could you double check your Exchange 2007 Internal Autodiscover URI - it should be pointing to Exchange 2013. All clients should be receiving their autodiscover config from the Exchange 2013 server. Based on the client's mailbox location, Exchange 2013
    generates and provides the correct information.
    2. If the autodiscover URI is "autodiscover.yourdomain.com" and you've configured Split-Brain DNS or Pin-Point DNS zones on the local network, make sure the name is resolved to Exchange 2013 internal IP address.

  • Mailbox Move Issues and Errors - Exchange 2010 to 2013

    I'm trying to move mailboxes from 2010 to 2013, but I'm experiencing a lot of issues.
    My move batches keep hanging (stalled) for minutes and hours on end, and I can't seem to keep them going consistently.
    I have two DAG's, one for Archive boxes, and one for Primary mailboxes. Each DAG has three members with DB copies of each DB. The npdes and the clusters themselves are up and healthy. However, at random some of the DB's Content Index state will go to Failed
    or SuspendedandFailed. At which point I force a catalog refresh and DB index update, and it goes to healthy.
    I've created the "ContentSubmitters" AD group (and assigned it permissions), reset the Search and Host controller services on each server, and restarted the Replication service. I also deleted and recreated the Index for each DB prior to restarting
    services. No dice. I've also already moved the system mailboxes over to the 2013 databases.
    I'm also getting some "Transient" errors in the user move log, things like this:
    Transient error ResourceUnhealthyException has occurred. The system will retry"

    Hi
    I would suggest you to run the below command for this "My move batches keep hanging (stalled) for minutes and hours on end" issue and see the result
    Get-MoveRequest -Identity "Mailbox Name" | Get-MoveRequestStatistics -IncludeReport | FL Report
    Just check if the MRS health is fine by running the below command
    Test-MRSHealth -Identity "CAS Server" -MonitoringContext $true | Export-CliXml "C:\temp\CAS_MRSHealth.xml" and look at the xml file to get more information
    When I run the Test command against either of my CAS servers, I get: " 'EXCH1' does not have the right Exchange Server version or role required to support this operation."
    Run i run that command against any of the mailbox servers, it completes and generates the XML file, but I'm not sure what I need to be looking for within that file.

  • Resource bundle naming issue across platforms

    Sorry, but there's no issue anymore. After a complete restart of the windows server it now accepts lowercase "da".
    We're using resource bundles to internationalize our app for English and Danish users. The default resource bundle is named "ViewControllerBundle" and the Danish bundle is named "ViewControllerBundle_DA" (on windows at least).
    Our problem occurs, when we deploy the application on different platforms. At the moment we have Weblogic 10.3.5 running on Linux and on Windows. Our development environment (JDeveloper 11.1.2) is running on Windows.
    When we deploy the application on Weblogic/Linux we need to rename the Danish resource bundle to lowercase "da", like "ViewControllerBundle_da".
    When we deploy on Windows or runs the application from JDeveloper we need to name the Danish resource bundle with uppercase "DA", like "ViewControllerBundle_DA".
    If we don't rename the bundles we're not able to display danish labels etc.
    I would like to know, whether we are naming the bundle the right way or whether it is possible to avoid this manual renaming before deploy. We would like to use the same EAR file for all the servers, if possible.
    From faces-config:
    <locale-config>
    <default-locale>da_DK</default-locale>
    <supported-locale>da_DK</supported-locale>
    <supported-locale>en_GB</supported-locale>
    </locale-config>

    b) In some parts on our website, we need to show data, depending on an attribute in a user's profile. So, for instance, if the user is not an administrator, the address shouldn't be shown when his profile is shown to a regular user. Is there an elegant way to solve this? I'm a Struts programmer (first JSF project) and normally you do <c:if test="${}">, but that's not possible in JSF :-).You can certainly use JSTL in JSF. You need at least JSF 1.2 at a JSP 2.1 environment and JSTL 1.2. Google for "unified EL" in Sun.com. But if you want to use a JSF-only solution, then make use of the 'rendered' attribute which is supported by every JSF HTML component and a few JSF core components. It accepts a boolean expression and when it evaluates to true, then the component will be rendered in the view.
    E.g.<h:panelGroup rendered="#{user.admin}">
        <h:outputText value="I am an admin." />
    </h:panelGroup>where the User bean look likepublic class User {
        public boolean isAdmin() {
            return admin;
    }Here are some more EL examples which you can use in the 'rendered' attribute:<h:someComponent rendered="#{myBean.booleanValue}" />
    <h:someComponent rendered="#{!myBean.booleanValue}" />
    <h:someComponent rendered="#{myBean.intValue > 10}" />
    <h:someComponent rendered="#{myBean.objectValue == null}" />
    <h:someComponent rendered="#{myBean.stringValue != 'someValue'}" />
    <h:someComponent rendered="#{!empty myBean.collectionValue}" />
    <h:someComponent rendered="#{!myBean.booleanValue && myBean.intValue != 0}" />
    <h:someComponent rendered="#{myBean.stringValue == 'oneValue' || myBean.stringValue == 'anotherValue'}" />

    So Exchage 2013 is set up, sending and receiving emails is working, OWA access is working and redirecting to our old 2010 if the mailbox resides there.However after moving a mailbox from 2010 to 2013 there have been a few issues.The mailbox connects ok with Outlook 2013, but will not open the onprem Archive."cannot expand the folder. The set of folders cannot be opened. Microsoft Exchange is not available.."This works ok in OWA.I then deleted the outlook profile, but now Outlook cannot connect to create a profile at all!It detects my name and email ok, then when it gets to "logging on to the mail server" I get the error"Outlook cannot log on. Verify you are connected to the network and are using the proper server and mailbox name. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this...

  • Large Mailbox sync issues

    Hi,
    Is there any limitations in Apple mail.app for synching large mailboxes?
    I have an account which mailbox size exceeds 30 GB. The email server is Exchange 2007. When using Microsoft Outlook or webmail everything is working OK. When using mail.app on Apple computers, one over Exchange protocol and one over IMAP protocol, both of them are having troubles synching the account. Some messages appear then dissapear and comming back again in several hours. Some messages appear in inbox after several hours after their retrieval on server (I can see them over webmail or over Microsoft Outlook computer).
    Are there any limitations in mail.app?
    Thanks!

  • Outlook 365 Shared Mailbox's Issues

    Hi Martina
    I am very much of the same opinion.
    I have created a new Exchange account under the same user profile. I have set it touse a different ost file, with a unique name. When I open Outlook it seems to look happy, but it does not cache the new Exchange account. I have the Cached mode option selected
    for the account, but the OST does not seem to be populating. Do I need to do something additional to get this working? I know that Exchange will automatically open any additional mailboxes to which the logged on user has full permissions. Could this be clashing?
    Thank you very much for your assistance.

  • Exchange 2010 Mailbox automapping issues after updated to Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2010 SP3

    Hi,
    i have problem with Outlook Uses who have Full Access on other mailbox.
    An authentication window pop up very time a user start Outlook.
    If i remove the access everything is ok.
    if i insert manual the mailbox everything is ok
    The System was for 3 days ago updated to Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2010 SP3
    Before the update, was no issue.
    i will appreciated any help
    Thanks

    Same issue here. Ever since we installed Update Rollup 5 for SP3 Exchange 2010 mailboxes that were auto mapped are not accessible. They all get the same error.
    Cannot expand the folder. The set of folders cannot be opened. The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange has failed.
    What I have been doing is removing the users permission, then adding them back using the noautomap switch in Powershell. After doing that, the user manually adds the mailbox and all is well.
    Just a note here, I suspect it may have something to do with the version of Outlook 2010. We are running an older version here. I think only SP1 with no other incremental updates. Office is up to SP2. Also, one of the users I was working with could not access
    the mailbox no matter what we tried but she can walk over to another workstation and open Outlook and access the very same mailbox so that pretty much proves its software related particularly with Outlook.
    I cannot reproduce the problem on a workstation (XP) with a newer version of Outlook.
    This has been wearing me out and I suspected the Update Rollup all long. Now I am confident as others are having the same problem. If you find out anything on how to fix this other than the steps above, let me know.

  • Mailbox Move Issue - Mailbox Locked

    Hi
    I have tried 3 user mailboxes for local move request.
    It get-moverequest says all three completed.
    Then I cleared the same with Clear-moverequest command.
    Now get-moverequest says none.
    Now if i login with owa, it says mailbox locked for Movement.
    If i try to delete content or once again try to move, it says Mailbox locked by MRS and will be released automatically after 2 hrs.
    but its been more than a day still the error remains the same.
    Restarted all Exchange services.. Restarted Exchange server.. still no hope
    The Exchange console still shows these 3 mailboxes with Old DB name.
    If i query through shell, for Mailboxdb for these users, it shows blank.
    How do i bring back these mailboxes active and make it usable?
    regards Sundaresan.C

    This has been resolved now.
    The problem was the movement of mailboxes when the users are accessing it.
    This has gone to a stage where both the database has these users listing. One in Live and other in disconnected state.
    I need to reduce the DB Mailbox retention to Zero -> disable the mailbox -> clean DB -> reconnect the Mailbox to existing user -> Clean DB.
    This made users access their mailboxes with all old mails.
    Lesson learnt: Do not move mailboxes when users accessing it though Microsoft says no issues. It may be locked inbetween.
