Maintaining a 'best of' catalog on another machine

Hi all, I have a head-scratcher I'd really like some help with.
I've migrated my entire digital life from a MacBook to a new iMac but still want to run a copy of Lightroom 2 on my old machine in a 'stripped-down' state.
This will be a single catalog containing only the top-rated images relating to the main catalog now resident on the new iMac. The plan is to frequently update the catalog on the old MacBook with selected images from the new iMac's catalog – including a backup copy of the 'asset' file –  as much a means of having a portable portfolio as a secure backup.
I should add my main motivation to do this is to save disk space, speed up LR performance and simplify the catalog hierarchy on the old Mac, which was really struggling to cope.
I'm going to be removing around 320Gb of RAW files once this is all done and want to do it as 'cleanly' as possible. Is it best to delete everything related to LR in the MacBook's finder, or do it within LR? I'm particularly keen to get rid of cached previews but *only* those relating to deleted files.
The second question kind of depends on the first (and maybe should have been the first... anyway...) what's the best way to periodically export both the RAW file asset and the LR settings relating to it to the old machine? The standard 'export' dialog allows me to pick 'originals' (presumably RAW files) but I'm hopeful there's a way of syncing catalogs over a network..?
LIke i say, taking the second question first might be better. There's a devil on my shoulder saying: 'delete the lot, then export/rebuild the mini MacBook catalog from the ground up'. Can anyone offer some guidance?
Thanks
Mik

It's really very easy.
In the main catalog, select the photos and then File->Export As Catalog. (Do not Export the photos using File->Export. Make sure you are using  File->Export as Catalog.) You probably want to check the box that says "Include Negatives" and "Include Available Previews". Move everything to the other computer. Then, File->Import From Catalog.
You can do this as many times as you want. The second and later exports from the main catalog to the subset catalog should contain only new stuff, but if you forget what's new and what's already sent, no biggie, Lightroom will figure it out.
If you want to get rid of EVERYTHING on the old computer before you do this, I would imagine you would find this easiest to do in the Finder.

  • Using Lightroom Cloud to Sync Catalog Between Two Machines

    I have use of so many cloud services including the 20gb that Adobe gives me.  Is there a way i can sync my catalog on the cloud so that i can have all my metadata on both my laptop and desk top?  I also have 300gb of cloud storage though Copy.  I would just like some recomendations on how best to go about it. Thanks

    Hi Pat,
    Using Lightroom Cloud to Sync Catalog Between Two Machines
    If you’re running Lightroom on a laptop during your location shoots, you might want to take all the edits, keywords, metadata, and of course the photos themselves, and add them to the Lightroom catalog on your studio computer. It’s easier than it sounds: basically, you choose which catalog to export from your laptop, then you take the folder it creates over to your studio computer and import it.
    You need to decide whether you want to export a folder (all the imported photos from your shoot), or a collection (just your Picks from the shoot). In this case, we’ll go with a collection, so go to the Collections panel and click on the collection you want to merge with your main catalog back in your studio. (If you had chosen a folder, the only difference would be you’d go to the Folders panel and click on the folder from that shoot instead. Either way, all the metadata you added, and any edits you made in Lightroom, will still be transferred over to the other machine.)

    Thanks!

  • Managed Servers on another machine

              I'm having problems getting a managed server running on
              another machine with NT. For simplicity, I'm using the
              'mydomain' that comes in the install. From the
              'mydomain' directory, I just:
              startWebLogic.cmd
              which starts up the weblogic server after adding my
              system password. Then, from the console, I add a new
              machine and a server on this machine. Then from the
              other machine in the equivalent 'mydomain' directory, I
              run:
              startManagedWebLogic.cmd server-2 machine1:7001
              And, it gives me this error:
              D:\bea\wlserver6.0>"D:\bea\jdk130\bin\java" -hotspot
              -ms64m -mx64m -classpath .;

              I had a similar error when starting a managed server on

              "machine1:7001".
              Any ideas?

              I finally got this going, so I want to share it with others getting started in
              managed servers/clusters.
              Apparently, "weblogic.admin.host" and "weblogic.management.server" are equivalent
              properties. After I got things working, it didn't seem to matter which one I
              used.
              Beware of adding a trailing slash on the end of the URL such as
              "http://localhost:7001". I've been trained that this is not a well formed URL,
              so I add it by habit; however, Weblogic will complain about not finding your
              server. Just giving the "localhost:7001" will work as well.
              Whenever changing machines, servers, etc with the console, it's best to reboot
              all the servers. I realize that it should be dynamic, but it doesn't seem to
              work out that way. I'm learning to edit the 'config.xml' which seems to be a
              safer bet at the moment.

  • Trouble with keyword import in LR5 from one catalog to another

    Hi; I am trying to open a new catalog because my original catalog is getting somewhat sluggish.  It has about 60000 images.  First, will opening a new catalog improve anything?  Second, I have tried to import the prior catalog "keywords" by going: metadata, import keywords, light room settings, key word sets   and get "no items match your search.  What am I doing wrong?

    I have had this Nikon 7100 for about 6 months.  It has more whistles and bells than I am likely to use.  I haven't been troubled by 24 megs in LR I guess because I use it mostly for filing and Photoshop for editing.  I only edit a few.  If I were in need of batch editing, which I may in the future, I think LR would be better.
    As to the timing, don't we all get spoiled.  We have more computer power now than NASA had 15 years ago.  It makes you wonder how the original Apple 2+ with 48k memory even functioned.

    It doesn't sound unreasonable, it is the size of my current camera and I do have to wait for imports to complete but never timed them. Is this a new camera? The reason for the question is that megapixels matter a lot for Lightroom, it is something I haven't gotten used to yet. There are certain Develop adjustments Lightroom struggles with on a 24 megapixel file (cropping, and the Upright and Manual lens corrections, for example). In other words, there are things that Lightroom does on a 6, 12, 14 megapixel file with ease and cannot do with ease on a 24 megapixel file. Memory does not seem to matter, I recently upgraded my laptop and the performance improvement is marginal. You can almost hear the cogwheels moving sometimes. What error do you meet after you move your service to another machine?
    In your service config file, you have used the following address:
    <baseAddresses>
    <add baseAddress="net.tcp://172.16.35.10:8845/DuplexWCFService" />
    </baseAddresses>
    Then in your client config file, you have used the following address:

    binding="netTcpBinding" bindingConfiguration="data" contract="WCFServicesCal.ICalculatorDuplex"
    name="data">
    The sevice and client address are different, please try to use the same endpoint address as your service endpoint.
    Besides, by default the netTcpBinding will use the Windows Authentication, please make sure that your service and client are in the same domain or a trusted domain.

  • After upgrade to 10.10, can't send email (SMTP cert. error).  On previous version running on another machine, can still send find.  This new version is missing the "Usual Ports" checkbox option.  Can someone please help?

    I just upgraded to 10.10.  On the mail program, one of my accounts is having an issue sending email.  I am getting the following error message:
    The certificate for this server is invalid.
    Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.
    But on another machine running Mavericks, I can still continue to send email.  The same is try from my iPhone 5S.
    On that machine running Mavericks the SMTP is configured as SSL and for "Usual Ports" (25, 465, 587) but THIS OPTION IS MISSING ON THE NEW VERSION.  On the new version I have tried configuring the port to 25 and then 465 and 587 with no success.  I have used the Network Utility to see if my provider is blocking me -- it is not.  I have no third-party software on this machine (anti virus).  I can receive email fine.  On the new Yosemitie Mail there are new checkbox options of Automatically check my settings and Allow unsecure connections.  I tried to uncheck SSL for SMTP but then it says it cannot send securely my passowrd and i need to check the option "Allow to send unsecurely".  I did that but the same error message keeps appearing.  So I have tried nearly everything I have been able to, all to no avail.  Please can somebody help?

    Thanks for your reply.  Yes, it is a POP account.  Incoming mail is fine.  My port for incoming is also 110.  But the outgoing port should be 587 (or 24, 465 and 587 as on Mavericks' "Usual Ports" option).  I am using the same configuration across three different devices and only the machine running Yosemite is having issues.  I notice in the new version of Mail there is no longer the "Usual Ports" option.  I am not sure this is the culprit or not.  But the fact is no matter how I configure it, it will not send mail for these particular servers.  I have multiple clients and only one is affected, meaning I can send email from other email addresses (different hosting contracts) on Yosemite but on this one particular one I cannot.

  • How do I move booksmark to another machine without replacing the bookmarks on the new machine, i.e combine a number of bookmark files

    I'm setting up a laptop and want to have all the bookmarks from my desk machine to be moved there from different accounts, but in end up in one file so that I don't have to have loads of separate accounts.

    You need to combine all the links to one HTML file.
    You only need a file with Anchor links like this:
    <pre><nowiki>
    <a href="https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/754997">How do I move booksmark to another machine without replacing the bookmarks on the new machine, i.e combine a number of bookmark files | Firefox Support Forum | Firefox Support</a></nowiki></pre>
    If you export bookmarks to an HTML file then you create a copy of your bookmarks and you edit that copy and you do not affect the original bookmarks.

    It's not a good idea to create multiple catalogs. For one thing, this defeats the purpose of the Organizer as a way to search for and find your photos; the search can only operate within a single catalog. Also, there are no functions in PSE that work across multiple catalogs. And even though you can "manually" combine the catalogs if you so desire, you lose information such as collection/album membership, stacks, version sets, creations and a few other things.

  • How can i transfer files from forms10g to another machine..?

    Dear All,
    We would like to transfer image files from forms10g to another machine rather than Application server using webutil,
    Can any body give me a workaround for the same, because its occupying more space in the application server, so it would be better if we can able to transfer to another networked machine..
    Thanks in advance
    Thangaraj

    Actually we are not mapping machine name something in webutil.cfg file. We just need to specify the path that from where we will transfer the file from application server to client. And the time time of transfer the path you will
    choose for client webutil will transfer the file on that location automatically.

    Hi
    I have built my program using the much maligned Borland JBuilder, so being quite proud of my new programe i want to run it on other machines, ie i want to put it on a cd and distribute it.!! So how do i do this, i understand that another machine will have JVM installed however is there somthing similar to .exe. exes? What for? How do you run an exe under UNIX?Something you may very well have to do is grant execute permission on the executable file that was thus created. UNIX and Linux do not automatically grant execute privileges on files the way Winblows does.
    PS.

  • I bought Lion from the App Store. It installed to my laptop and I would like to install it on another machine. Can I do this without having to buy another copy?

  • How to transfer Lightroom settings  from one catalog to another?

    Lightroom 5. I have combined two catalogs into one "Master Catalog" per Julian Kosts tutorial ( http://tv.adobe.com/watch/adobe-evangelists-julieanne-kost/lr3-merging-individual-lightroo m-catalogs-into-a-master-catalog-/ ) without incident. However, my presets are not to be found. Could there be other issues? How Do I properly get these presets into my Master Catalog?
    How to transfer Lightroom settings  from one catalog to another?

    Nevermind.
    Per the turorials, this is suppose to occur automatically.
    In the rare event that it does not, forced by lack of support through Adobe or the forums, I am relagated to resolve my problem the old fasjion way. Guessing at a solution of dragging and dropping (risking overwritting current the newer LR5 files (careful now).
    I love the product but trying to get problem resolution here has been disapointing.
    I'd like to retract this entire question session.
