Making mongrel_rails_persist work with Macports

Question

I have just installed Ruby, Rails and some other packages that I needed using macports.
Unfortunately it seems that the script provided by Apple to make a mongrel service persistent across restarts only work with the factory installed Ruby and Rails.
I have tried to change the path at the top of the scripts mongrelrailspersist and mongrel_rails etc but it seems that there are a lot of dependencies involved like ruby-cocoa which macport installation failed on me.
Can anyone provide info on how to get the mongrelrailspersist to work with macports installed Ruby, Rails and mongrel or how to configure the apache config file etc directly so that the mongrel server will start automatically?

just realised that the previous solution is not very good as it breaks the mongrelrailspersist restart.... command.
A better solution I found is to
1) install dnssd gem using macports
2) change the script header in /usr/bin/mongrelrailsserver and /usr/bin/mongrel_rails from
#!/usr/bin/ruby or #!/System/Library...
to
#!/opt/local/bin/ruby
or whichever directory that you installed the macports ruby in.
The original Apple's version of mongrelrailspersist should be used.
Remove the hacked version of mongrelrailspersist if you did the previous hack.
