Malware - trojan on mac

hi all.
I just had an experience where my emai account running through mac mail was spamming thousands of emails to the world. I was getting over 2000 replied emails  with address unknown, can't find server and all of those kinds of errors. my hosting company thinks that my computer was infected with a trojan or malware, but I was under the impression that mac's don't get viruses.
They have changed my password and my cpanel log in for security and have asked me to check me system
can you guys lend me more information on what I can use or what I shoudl look for that may have caused this issue?
thanks
bret

thanks for the reply guys.

Helpful Links Regarding Flashback Trojan and Virus Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
A link to a great User Tip about the trojan: Flashback Trojan User Tip.
To check for the trojan: Anti Flashback Trojan 2.0.4.
A Google search can reveal a variety of alternatives on how the remove the trojan should your computer get infected. This can get you started. Or the preferred method is to use Apple's protection tool: Flashback Malware Removal Tool 1.0.
Or, open Software Update. If you do not have the Apple protection software installed it will download and install it via Software Update. If no update appears that means you either already have it installed or it isn't needed for your system. The software is only available for Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion versions of OS X.
Also see Apple's article About Flashback malware.
For general anti-virus protection I only recommend using ClamXav.

  • Email phishing, malware, trojan horses, key stroke

I have a iMac with the new Yosemite 10.10.1 SW installed. I received an email and clicked on a web link that was characterised as Phishing and I enterred private information. I have since truned off all online contacts that may be compromised. What is the likelyhood that when I went to this scam website and enterred information that Malware, Trojan Horse, Key stroke counting type SW was installed?  Would the new Yosemite OS prevented this from happening?

Those sites are mostly designed for Windows PCs, so OS X should not be affected. Furthermore, OS X Yosemite uses Gatekeeper, which only allows to install apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers by default.
If you want to be sure there is nothing bad in your Mac, you can use ClamXav and scan the hard disk.

  • Malware/Trojans on a new MacBook Pro

My MBP is only 2 weeks old. The day after I got it I began to notice suspicious behavior when surfing the net (Yahoo Mail, Yahoo News, Facebook) when the screen I was on would be hijacked to an another site or ad of some kind. I screen-capped the examples and headed for the genius bar. They advised it was not the machine but probably pop ups from the sites I was visiting, in other words it was my keystroking habit and the sites I visited. Never knew Yahoo Mail and News were "problems"!
They loaded Sophos and said it won't find anything but would give me peace of mind. Well when I ran a full scan I've got a trojan and 2 malware (all java related). I assume this may be the root cause of my hijacking issue. I know the prevailing wisdom is that MACs don't get viruses and only get malware/trojans if the user/admin accepts them. I've not accepted anything or given permission for any downloads...ever. Which leads me to question if somehow these problems were transferred from my XP during the data transfer process? Is that possible? Does anyone have any suggestions about the best course of action? The malware can't be cleaned in Sophos...it must be manually removed. Which I've yet to figure out how to do. The primary reason I switched to a MAC was the security. And I love the machine but I'm disheartened to say the least. Any advice is appreciated.

You undoubtedly imported the malware from your PC running Windows. If the malware came from there, it can't do anything on a Mac unless the Mac is running Windows, and is therefore completely harmless. Antivirus software may detect Windows-based malware on your computer, but that doesn't mean any of it can run in the Mac OS.
The day after I got it I began to notice suspicious behavior when surfing the net (Yahoo Mail, Yahoo News, Facebook) when the screen I was on would be hijacked to an another site or ad of some kind.
This happens all the time and has nothing to do with malware, unless sneaky and devious website design is classified as malware.
...in other words it was my keystroking habit and the sites I visited.
I don't know what "keystroking habit" means, but the sites you're visiting are responsible for the popups and diversions that annoy you.

  • TENCENT QQ Trojan on Mac

    Hi,
After researching on Google, my friend and I have determined that I have the Tencent QQ trojan. I'm not surprised that its a QQ trojan because I use QQ (an instant messenger service in China). Apparently, the company openly recognizes that they put malware on your computer, but I never investigated it, never knew it, and assumed it could never happen on a Mac. My situation now is that I have this trojan (which exists on a Mac, according to several pages I found on Google) and I don't know what to do. Right now, I'm running ClamXAv to see what it finds. MacScan found nothing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Experts at SophosLabs™, Sophos's global network of virus, spyware and spam analysis centers, have announced the discovery of the first virus for the Apple Mac OS X platform. The virus, named OSX/Leap-A (also known as OSX/Oompa-A) spreads via instant messaging systems.
The OSX/Leap-A worm spreads via the iChat instant messaging system, forwarding itself as a file called latestpics.tgz to contacts on the infected users' buddy list. When the latestpics.tgz archive file is opened on a computer it disguises its contents with a JPEG graphic icon in an attempt to fool people into thinking it is harmless.
Some owners of Mac computers have held the belief that Mac OS X is incapable of harboring computer viruses, but Leap-A will leave them shellshocked.
The worm uses the text "oompa" as an infection marker in the resource forks of infected programs to prevent it from reinfecting the same files.
"Some owners of Mac computers have held the belief that Mac OS X is incapable of harboring computer viruses, but Leap-A will leave them shellshocked, as it shows that the malware threat on Mac OS X is real," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos. "Mac users shouldn't think it's okay to lie back and not worry about viruses."
Sophos customers have been automatically protected against the worm since 12:25 GMT, 16 February 2006.
"This is the first real virus for the Mac OS X platform," continued Cluley. "Apple Mac users need to be just as careful running unknown or unsolicited code on their computers as their friends and colleagues running Windows."
Sophos advises all computer users, whether running PCs or Macs, to practise safe computing and keep their anti-virus software updated.
    Is Leap-A a virus or a Trojan?
Some members of the Apple Macintosh community have claimed that OSX/Leap-A is a Trojan horse, and not a virus or worm, because it requires user interaction (the user has to receive a file via iChat, and manually choose to open and run the file contained inside).
However, this is not the definition of a Trojan horse.
A Trojan horse is a seemingly legitimate computer program that has been intentionally designed to disrupt and damage computer activity. Importantly, Trojan horses do not replicate or have any mechanism of spreading themselves. They have to be deliberately planted on a website, or accidentally shared with another user, or spammed out to email addresses. There is nothing inside a Trojan's code to distribute themselves further to other victims.
Trojan horses do not contain any code to distribute or spread themselves, viruses and worms do.
OSX/Leap-A is programmed to use the iChat instant messaging system to spread itself to other users. As such, it is comparable to an email or instant messaging worm on the Windows platform. Worms are a sub category of the group of malware known as viruses.
Therefore, it is correct to call OSX/Leap-A a virus or a worm. It is not correct to call OSX/Leap-A a Trojan horse.
This is one of many. All the users out their that assume they will remain safe are in denial. More harmful material is being aimed at Mac daily.
I use no AV ware, and I consider myself safe, I just thought I'd offer good reading.
    Ray

How can I eradicate this "Visual Touch" malware form my Mac OS X on google chrome?
I have tried everything i've seen in these forums so far, removing all extensions, manually added suggested filters & even uninstalled the entire browser and its contents on my device but still i am seeing the disgusting double underlined advertising haunting a large proportion of web pages i am visiting.
Any help would be appreciated to finding a credible solution. Although it's advised to remove the adblock software as it is the potential cause it is unbearable surfing without it. So after trying every advised antidote i've just reinstalled it, and living with the double green line bullsh*t.
Also i almost never use safari, just google chrome but when i went to try safari it looks like the parisite and found its way on to that browser too.
Is there any type of malware software to search the computer which can successfully find and remove the cause of this ongoing issue? please it's insatiably irritating

I had failed to mention in my previous comments that each time the attempted attacks took place, a blank Adobe PDF page appeared. As you suggested, I disabled the Adobe add-on and have had no further attacks. I am extremely dilligent in keeping my SuperAntiSpyware Pro, AvastAntiVirus 5.0, ThreatFire, Vista Firewall Control, Malewarebytes and Windows Defender up to date. However, after any attack I always run these in safe mode just as a precaution. I had suspected the Adobe drop-in may have been the culprit because of the page that appeared and your suggested fix has in fact fixed it!
Thank you again for your unselfish time in coming to my rescue. "Deaf Dave"

    Hello Deaf Dave.
It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
Also, it's possible that your system is infected with malware. To scan for malware, install, update and run these programs ''in this order''. They are all free for personal use, but some have limited functionality in their "free mode", but the features you'll miss are not really needed to find and remove the problem you have. Remember that ''not all programs detect the same malware''!

  • Did someone put malware on my mac?

How do I know if someone put malware on my mac? I thought I was getting tech support from DLink, but in fact it was a scam and I let iyogi.ca have access to my mac via their log-in system. Duh. Now that I've done that, how do I know if I have problems, or my files have been copied or personal info stolen?

The only way to be sure is to erase and reinstall your OS. Since that'll wipe out everything, make sure you back up your own stuff/files first. Since you allowed them access and the company is not DLink, but just someone advertising "support", I would absolutely erase and reinstall.

  • I think I've installed malware/trojan...

I think ive installed malware/trojan by downloading and installing software from gimpshop.com - is there a way i can tell? Total lapse of concentration on my behalf but now panicking.....

I just checked that site with Sucuri SiteCheck. It comes up clean, except with a notice that it's using an oudated version of wordpress.
    http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/results/gimpshop.com
Then I checked with Quterra, which reports one potentially suspicious file. Note potentially. But that site, which is based on heuristics, not the presence of any actual malware, is only making a guess.
    http://quttera.com/detailed_report/gimpshop.com
Could be it's installing adware. Obnoxious but less vicious than a trojan. See
    http://www.thesafemac.com/arg/
If Virus Barrier Express doesn't come up with anything, though not  foolproof, I'd probably relax. Besides that, since you are only allowing code signed or MAS apps in, and this guy, though maybe disreputable, isn't fly by night using code signing for a quick hit, that's another sign you can relax, especially if your browser and OS are up to date.
EDIT: Well, actually, there's a caveat with what I said about an updated OS. Both 10.8 and 10.7 haven't received security updates in quite a while. And neither has XProect (the built in anti malware program) since Oct 9. Apple is dragging its feet there. Only 10.9 got patched. But I wouldn't let that make me crazy.

  • HELP! I had a Flashback Trojan/Malware on my Mac, I deleted it in trash, and now my Mac won't start.

At first my Mac Finder showed n81, n82, etc when you right-click it, instead of the commands " open new finder window", "hide" etc. I also noticed that sometimes, when I would go to sites such as facebook, it would redirect to a different site and I'd have to type in the address again to get to the site. Nothing else was wrong with it. Safari was not shutting down. It wasn't slow.
I did some research and found that I probably have the Flashback Trojan/Malware virus (whatever that is?) And so I followed what some people did (which got their mac fixed) .. I downloaded clamvax and tinkertool to find the malware (hidden files) and I deleted it in trash.. my computer seemed fine but when I restarted it, it wont turn on anymore.. the screen remains blue, the mouse could still be moved, but it stays that way..
did I lose all my files? am I being hacked as we speak? Is this virus very dangerous?! I am very paranoid and know nothing about this kind of stuff so please help!
BTW, the malware was from the game Farm Frenzy.. I have no idea how I got this... I never play online games.

@Thomas, Thanks for jumping in. I had to take my wife to a Doctor appointment and things went down hill from there.
I note that you are using Mac OS X 10.5.x.  It's important to understand that the Java vulnerabilities that allowed this malware to get established on your machine cannot be fixed in 10.5.x.  You would need to upgrade to at least 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to be able to get a version of Java with those vulnerabilities fixed.  (Correct me if I'm wrong there, Al!)
That's 100% correct. Natalia has the distinction of being the first OS X 10.5 user confirmed to be infected by Flashback as far as I can tell. That operating system is becoming increasingly dangerous as the days go by. The OS has not been updated since Aug 2009 and the last Security and Java updates were in June 2011. There is no XProtect system and more and more third party's have dropped support in updating their Applications.

I actually ran disk utility, and it said that the Macintosh HD is fine... I also tried safe mode/safe boot and did the FSCK command.. even that said that my laptop was fine? but somehow it still stays blue when I start up!
And I think it probably is fine, except that something is hanging during the initial loading process. Could be most anything.
As for my files, I appreciate your advice but I am scared I might do something wrong and mess my laptop up even more!
There is almost no chance of that and at this point it should be obvious to you that if the files on your laptop are that important, you should already have a backup.
I will take it to Apple and hopefully they can help me... because it seems that my files aren't wiped out... yet... It still displayed that I had my files in there..
One word of caution, then. I have been told that Apple has instructed their support folks not to attempt to clean up a malware infection. If I were you I wouldn't bring it up unless you have to.
By the way, while the disk was running, it was making very loud noises.. humming/grinding/etc... what could this mean?
Only one thing in my experience, you're hard drive is toast. All the more reason to try and get all the data you can off it immediately.
The only way to test it is to do a surface scan which Disk Utility cannot do. You would need a third party utility to do that. If it tells you there are bad sectors, that is 100% proof that it's going bad, as modern hard drives repair themselves of bad sectors until they run out of reserves to substitute.

Firefox never finishes loading certain websites
If specific websites (not all) start to load, but never finish (i.e. The Firefox activity indicator may spin for several minutes, or the status bar may show "Done" on a blank page), it is either because of a software trojan called Vundo, or a file being in the wrong format.

If you're having a problem loading sites other than the one described above, see the Error loading websites article to see if it addresses your problem. You can also check your Internet security software - resetting permissions for Firefox can often fix similar problems.
There can be other causes of the symptoms described above. Before attempting these instructions, try the methods described in the Basic Troubleshooting article to see if they will address your problem.
If you still have problems after scanning, you may ask a support question.

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:

If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?
