Managed WGM Preferences!

Hi,
I'm trying to create a master image for Mac labs, and I have created a computers group and add all the labs to that group and assigned preferences to that specific group.. i have two questions:
1) all those computers in that computer group has an ethernet ID which doesn't change and DHCP IP address, does this gonna effect the managed settings since the ip address will be different from time to time ?.. or maybe its better to remove the ip address and keep the ethernet ID ?, and the same thing for the computer name & shortname.. i need to know which ones does matter?
2) How can i tell the workgroup manager to change the desktop background to any network user login to the computer?, i cant find an option to change the desktop background!
or should i create a customized user template and replace it with the default one?.. but if i do that then there is no reason of having managed preferences under WGM ?..
I'm just confused which one is more easy to control or maybe i should combine both together and come up with a solution?
Thanks,

the MAC address is the only thing that really matters.
to manage the desktop picture, you need to have your custom image somewhere on disk and import the preference to manage. it's doable.

  • Managing iTunes Preferences

    Good afternoon.
We are managing our students' preferences via Workgroup Manager, but we have a problem with iTunes. There is one Preference, 'Check for iTunes updates automatically', which we cannot seem to be able to manage. Looking at the iTunes plist using Property List Editor, there is no item that manages this Preference. All the other 'iApps' have a similar Preference, which is easy to deal with, but not iTunes.
Does anyone know where this iTunes Preference is stored and how to disable it via Workgroup Manager please?
    Thanks in advance.
    Brian Bowell

The various settings for iTunes can be managed - but the update check isn't one of them, unfortunately. You can use the Prefs Editor (Details) in WGM to add the iTunes preference manifest to your mcx settings and set the acceptable values for your site from there. I have posted a simple guide at my .Mac site to walk you through this - iTunes v7 has a few more settings than the iTunes v5 I used for the guide, but the steps still apply.
Also - as an FYI - prefs in the ByHost folder can be added to WGM and they become universally applicable. Only prefs with raw data cannot be used.

  • Managing System Preferences in JEE

I am currently working on a project that is beginning the process of formalizing how to manage System Preferences and was wondering if anyone had any "lessons learned" about how to go about doing this. At this point I think we are going to use Java Preferences as the back end (although I can be persuaded) but the piece I am more interested in is the Glue linking this to the UI that will be actually making the modifications. How have people in the past handled managing multiple JEE Applications and their configurations? I would prefer to have one central location which provides control for each whose logic does not depend on any of the "Preference Providers" (i.e. the individual application). In order to make this separate I had figured some configuration file would be used to indicate what preferences are configurable but am contemplating a more dynamic approach as well. Any suggestions/readings that any could provide would be much appreciated.

If you are referring to the Dock then remove it by clicking on it and dragging it to the Desktop. Then navigate to the Applications folder and double click on System Preferences to see the Preferences open. If they do then drag it from the  Applications folder back to the Dock and re-test.

  • I want to manage display preferences in WGM and can't figure out where or how to do this.

I want to manage whether the "mirror display" option is true or false and can't find the settings to control this in WGM.  Any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks

I don't believe this is possible. I believe the reason would be the fact that only some computers e.g. laptops would support this feature, and even then only if a second external display is also connected. Because therefore this would not apply consistently it cannot be enforced.

  • Managing Printer Preferences

I'm new to OS X Server, to so please forgive my naivety.
What I wish to do is add a printer to the printers list for every user in a group, so that I don't have to sit down to configure each of the 60+ computers that these users use.
The network accounts are automatically imported to OS X server from an Active Directory domain (Windows Server 2008 R2) and added to groups on the Mac server. Two of the printers I'm trying to configure are hosted on a Windows server, and one is a network printer that I've added to the Mac server.
I've tried to manage the groups printer preferences via Workgroup manager: Always Manage, printers added to the User's Printer List, users are allowed to modify the printer list, printers connected via USB are OK, no admin password required. When I log in as one of the managed users, however, no printer is visible.
What is the correct way to do what I am trying to do? Thank you.

  • Managed Mail Preferences & message caching

I'm using the managed preferences for mail in my OD network. (10.5.7 server & clients)
But as the mailboxes grow, i would like to manage the caching of e-mail so that only the bodies and not the attachments are not cached to the users home folder.
The preference used is 'com.apple.mail.managed', when manually adding the preferences of my Mail.app to workgroup manager it adds a preference 'com.apple.mail'. Extracting the relevant keys from that preference and putting them in the com.apple.mail.managed preference dit not work because the order and naming of the keys in both preferences do not match.
Anyone got an idea on how to manage caching policy of mails via workgroup manager?
(and while we are on it, also enabling ssl for the managed imap account)

    Nevermind,
I just read some blogpost saying one of the enhancements in Snow Leopard Server is the more granular setup of e-mailaccounts in workgroup manager.
Looking forward to upgrade! (Only one server available, so i'm a little hesitant)

  • How do I managed audio preferences for lab machines?

I am unable to get an audio preference to be a the default configuration for all users, local or network. I've created a user template that has all other configurations and preferences and this works great except for audio I/O. All lab machines have identical firewire audio input devices and identical usb prowered speakers for an output. Using the Audio/Midi utility I set the input to the firewire micpre, output to the usb speakers and set alert sounds to the internal speaker.
When other users log in all three settings default to the firewire device.

Turns out to be a OS bug. I am told that a script can be written to establish the configuration.

  • Managed (mcx) preferences ONLY works for Computer Groups (Lists)

AD Server 2008 R2 with extended schema.
Macs (ML 10.8.5) bound to AD, mcx settings were created for Computer Groups , User Groups (AD security groups), Users
but ONLY Computer Lists settings apply on the local machine (ANY, not just one)
I can see it with mcxquery
Anybody has an idea why that could be & how to sort it, so it DOES apply to user, user groups as well?
    Seb

Turned out that my user existed as LOCAL user (same name/pass as AD)
In that way ONLY Machine MCX applies
Renaming local user & login with AD user applies Preferences correctly

  • Automator: managing Sharing preferences panel

I would know if it's possible to write a workflow in Automator, or an AppleScript, that let me quickly activate the "sharing internet" (via Airport, from Ethernet) option in the Sharing panel of the system preferences.

  • Managing File Sharing via WGM

I can't see a way to do this, but I thought I might as well ask...
Is it possible to manage Sharing preferences from WGM? I want to ensure that users cannot turn on personal file sharing, but they have a need to be able to access the preference pane - so restricting it fro opening is not an option.
    TIA

    Hello Christopher.
I looked into this and opened my WGM. You can disable the whole "Sharing" tab from the preferences pane. You can do this setting for specific computers or computer groups or users / user groups. So open up WGM. Select one you like to set preferences to (user, group, computer/computer group), and select "Preferences" from the top menu bar. Then Select "System Preferences" from the list that opens to the middle right, and then select to manage "Always" or "Once". You see the list below of services that you wish your computer / user to grant access to. Then just uncheck all the services you want to be disabled for that computer /user, and hit Apply Now.
And you are all set! Was this helpful?
    Sincerely,
    V

  • Managed Preferences Have No Effect

I've been trying to figure this one out for a while. I have a lab of Macs running 10.3.9 that were originally set up to authenticate to our PM G5 running Tiger Server. The eMacs running 10.3.9 had preferences controlled by the server such as having the System Preference restricted from users.
Well I ran into some trouble getting the machines to authenticate on day and removed the eMacs from the managed lists altogether. However, now I cannot even get the System Preferences to be restricted for local managed users on these eMacs.
If I log into one of these eMacs as an admin and look at the account settings for the non-admin local users they restrictions for the System Pres are in place (not allowing the local users to modifiy all system prefs) but when the local user logs in they have full access to the System Prefs.
I have tried reparing permissions and the disk but that did nothing. There must be a file somewhere that I can delete to return the managability of these local accounts. Any suggestions?

    A couple of suggestions...
Are your client machines still being managed as WGM guests?
Maybe they haven't been removed properly from OD? To check this:
    1. go to WGM > Preferences > check the 'Show all records...' box.
    2. Click on the inpector icon in WGM
    3. Choose Computers from the pulldown menu
    4. If the comuters you don't want managed are on thet list you should delete them.

  • How to you prevent disabling remote login via managed preferences?

this doesn't seem to be an obvious setting.
i want to disable our users from disabling remote login on their machines. some of them know how to do this.
everyone has moblie home accounts, btw.
    hope someone can help!
    thanks in advance.

    thanks for your response, Tony.
your 2nd suggestion is more towards what i am looking to do.
we have WGM with User, Computer, Groups, and Computer Groups. right now, we aren't managing any preferences and we do make the users local admins on their machines after their first login/Home Sync.
i was hoping to add a manifest to WGM in Preferences/Details, but i am not sure if this is possible and if it is, i don't know how to do it.
we have users in remote sites that connect to our network via vpn and sometimes i need to remotely access their machines. but i can't on those that turn it off, obviously.
    thanks again!

  • Managing the Mobility preference at the computer list level

    Hi,
I'd like to get a confirm about my understanding of the role of the Mobility preference in computer lists.
Since the Mobility preference could be managed at the computer list level, it has effect both on the clients' local and network accounts. I tried to manage the preference for a computer list that contains clients with only local accounts and set it to "Synchronize account for offline use".
I saw no effect on clients' local account, but I think this is expected because portable home directories requires a network home folder to be set, and obviously local accounts cannot have it set.
    Could anyone confirm?
If the above reasoning is correct, the only point of managing the Mobility preference at the computer lists level is to allow or disallow network users with network home folders to create mobile accounts on specific computers.
    Am I right?
    TIA.

    I tried to
manage the preference for a computer list that
contains clients with only local accounts and set it
to "Synchronize account for offline use".
I saw no effect on clients' local account,
    That is the expecetd behavior.
If the above reasoning is correct, the only point of
managing the Mobility preference at the computer
lists level is to allow or disallow network users
with network home folders to create mobile accounts
    on specific computers.
    Am I right?
    Yes, you are right.

  • Centrally managing email marketing preferences in the enterprise

I would work a very large company made of several business units.  We have several instances of Eloqua as well as a few other automated marketing solutions for each business unit being used globally.   Our challenge is centrally managing email preferences in a place that can talk to all of those instances of Eloqua (and if we are lucky, other applications as well).  At its core we'd like to give users the ability to unsubscribe to a specific brand, or globally.  Then, when campaigns are sent from those disperate Eloqua instances, it can check on those unsubscribes before sending the email.
Is there a way to do this in Eloqua?  Is there a recommended third party tool to manage email preferences and has the ability to interface with Eloqua?

Possible Now might be able to handle this scenario - they are not quite live with an Eloqua integration and I am not sure of their ability for multiple instance support.
The other alternative is to build out a central data warehouse and, via API update all of the Eloqua instances with the unsubscribe data.
(a third option is to centralize your Eloqua instances - usually needs some process/people changes too)

  • Managed Client System Preference problem

I am pushing out MCX to my 10.5/10.6 clients. I'd like to manage the System Preferences pane, disabling Time Machine and Accounts preferences. However, if I manage ANY preferences, the "Other" system preference pane becomes disabled. I can't find a way to explicitly turn these "other" preferences back on. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I would get my install DVD out and do an archive and install.
