Mapping raw luns to a vm

Hi,
While trying to add a physical disk(raw LUN) to a VM, I get the following error.
OVMRU_005027E Virtual machine: oraclevm5 - Cannot remove disk: oraclevm5, which has the lowest target number: 0, from the running virtual machine.
I'm running OVM 3.0.3 so I think it should support mapping raw LUNs dynamically. The error comes up after the "Disk order" option while editing the VM. I've made sure to check the "Do not change network settings" option.
Has anyone seen this error before?
Thanks

That error is showing up because its saying your trying to modify the lowest disk index (0) which is considered a boot drive. Try adding the LUN to another slot and see if it lets you.

    HI All,
When i run the initial install, the gilr appliance wont pickup the raw lun (esxi.5.5) to cinfigure for data storage, but when i finish the install and go to yast, i can in partitiona manager create the partition, how can i trigger the initial install again .. i have tried the "NovellVainit" under yast , but that does not again adress the storage/partions, just passwords , dns etc etc ..
So guess i am looking for somtething or how to clear th efilr config so that when i startup, it takes me to the initial configuration steps, so i can then point to my storage i created in yast before... those this make any sense ...

  • Raw LUN access from guest LDOM

    Hi,
Is it possible to have raw access to LUNs from guest LDOM ?
Scenario is - 2 mpxio HBAs conected to control domain, 20 LUNs presented, 10 for ZFS filesystems inside LDOMs and 10 with raw access for HORCM operations inside LDOMs for switching TrueCopy pairs. So each LDOm should have exclusive access to two LUNs. This is requred for campus cluster with TrueCopy replicated storage for HA service running inside two ldoms.
We do not have T4 connected to storage yet and I can't check output of ldm list-io, but I've yet to see any examples of such setup on the net so a bit worrying if this possible at all.
    Thanks !

You might be looking at PCIe Direct I/O - This extends current PCIe support to enable you to assign either individual PCIe cards or entire PCIe buses to a guest domain.
You would probably need more pci cards on different slots

  • NSS Pools/Volumes Deactivate - VMware

    Greetings,
I've been trying to virtualize two of our NetWare 6.5 servers. My thought
was to install two new virtual servers and migrate the data from the
physical server to the virtual server. However, I've been running into
problems with the NSS volumes on the virtual servers deactivating
themselves ... not exactly the sort of thing you really want happening to
    a production box.
When the pools deactivate, the errors displayed are similar to the
    following:
    10-05-2007 3:36:54am: COMN-3.25-1092 [nmID=A0025]
NSS-3.00-5001: Pool SERVERNAME/IFOLDER is being deactivated.
An I/O error (20204(zio.c[2260])) at block 23602279(file block

Device "[V358-A2-D2:0] VMware Virtual disk f/w:1.0" deactivated by
    driver
    due to device failure.
FWIW, the VMware hosts are running ESX 3.0.2 and are connected to a NetApp
3050C filer via fiber channel. There are about 60 other Linux and Windows
virtual machines in the mix, all connected the same way that are not
    exhibiting these sorts of issues.
I contacted VMware support regarding the issue and was told to use
VMDK-based disks rather than mapped raw LUNs. When that server
experienced the same issue the tech suggested I use locally attached
storage (!?). Other than that, the only other suggestion he gave to me
was to wait for a new LSIMPTNW.HAM to correct the problem I was
    experiencing.
Obviously, many of you are running NetWare 6.5 on VMware...what's the key
    for success?
    Thanks,
    Rob

Rob, I'm having the same problem on one of my NW6.5 servers that's on
VMWare. Last time, I think it showed the same error message you report.
It happened again just this morning, but this time it says:
    10-11-2007 8:50:44 am: COMN-3.25-1196 [nmID=A0026]
NSS-3.00-5002: Pool MEDDIR/VOL2 is being deactivated.
An error (20012(nameTree.c[45])) at block 20227(file block -20227)
    (ZID6) has compromised volume integrity.
Several other NW6.5 servers on the same VMware host have never given me
any problem. Too weird. If you find out what the culprit is, please
    let me know.
    Thanks,

  • How do I map Hitachi SAN LUNs to Solaris 10 and Oracle 10g ASM?

    Hi all,
I am working on an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM installation with Sun E6900 servers attached to a Hitachi SAN for shared storage with Sun Solaris 10 as the server OS. We are using Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) RAC clusterware
for the clustering software and raw devices for shared storage and Veritas VxFs 4.1 filesystem.
    My question is this:
How do I map the raw devices and LUNs on the Hitachi SAN to Solaris 10 OS and Oracle 10g RAC ASM?
I am aware that with an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM instance, one needs to configure the ASM instance initialization parameter file to set the asm_diskstring setting to recognize the LUNs that are presented to the host.
I know that Sun Solaris 10 uses /dev/rdsk/CwTxDySz naming convention at the OS level for disks. However, how would I map this to Oracle 10g ASM settings?
I cannot find this critical piece of information ANYWHERE!!!!
    Thanks for your help!

Yes that is correct however due to use of Solaris 10 MPxIO multipathing software that we are using with the Hitachi SAN it does present an extra layer of complexity and issues with ASM configuration. Which means that ASM may get confused when it attempts to find the new LUNs from the Hitachi SAN at the Solaris OS level. Oracle Metalink note 396015.1 states this issue.
So my question is this: how to configure the ASM instance initialization parameter asm_diskstring to recognize the new Hitachi LUNs presented to the Solaris 10 host?
Lets say that I have the following new LUNs:
    /dev/rdsk/c7t1d1s6
    /dev/rdsk/c7t1d2s6
    /dev/rdsk/c7t1d3s6
    /dev/rdsk/c7t1d4s6
Would I set the ASM initialization parameter for asm_diskstring to /dev/rdsk/c7t1d*s6
as correct setting so that the ASM instance recognizes my new Hitachi LUNs? Solaris needs to map these LUNs using pseudo devices in the Solaris OS for ASM to recognize the new disks.
How would I set this up in Solaris 10 with Sun multipathing (MPxIO) and Oracle 10g RAC ASM?
I want to get this right to avoid the dreaded ORA-15072 errors when creating a diskgroup with external redundancy for the Oracle 10g RAC ASM installation process.

  • Map a SAN LUN to a WS2012 R2 virtual machine

    Hello,
I need some help from someone who has dealt with this before.
    I have:
an HP DL380 G6 running the unlimited eval copy of Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.
an HP MSA 2040 SAN enclosure.
    a WS2012 R2 Std. x64 virtual machine running on the Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 host.
an HP/LSI SAS 9207-8e host adapter.
I've been asked to configure the WS2012 R2 Std. x64 virtual machine as a file server, but really the data will be on an MSA 2040 SAN enclosure volume, so I need to map an LUN from the MSA 2040 to the WS2012 R2 Std. x64 virtual machine.
Of course I can't actually install the HP/LSI SAS 9207-8e host adapter into the WS2012 R2 Std. x64 virtual machine, but is there an emulation/software solution for this?
If I install the physical HP/LSI SAS 9207-8e host adapter into the physical Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 host, will I be able to add a virtual version of said host adapter to my VM?
I'm searching and reading posts now, but if someone, who knows, has the answer, I would really appreciate a pointer or two.
Thanks in advance for your time and help.
    SOLVED!
    Hello Elton_Ji/Darshana Jayathilake
And thanks for trying to help, but please stop repeating disinformation.
It CAN be done; I did it last week with the specific hardware/software listed.
Domain Environment - Server 2003 AD with DFL/FFL set to Windows Server 2003.
    1 - HP DL308 G6 running the unlimited eval of Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (core).
1 - member server (desktop class hardware) running WS2012 R2 Std. (used for remote mgmt.).
(there are 5/6 netsh advfirewall firewall commands that need to be run in order to use the computer
mgmt. console on a WS2012 R2 Std box to manage the Hyper-V Server core install; look 'em up.).
1 - HP MSA 2040 Enclosure with Dual Controllers - purchased in the last two months; no firmware changes
    have been made.
1 - HP/LSI SAS 9207-8e HBA - purchased in the last two months.
2 - SFF-8644 to SFF-8088 SAS HBA connector cables - purchased in the last two months.
Two SAN volumes were successfully mapped to the phys. SAS 9207-8e HBA in the Hyper-V Server using the
dual ctrlr connection scenario per the MSA2040 UserGuide. p.36

i didn't have to choose another lun while cfging ctrlr B; lun 1 is still set.
The file server VM is OFF!
the File Server VM's settings > SCSI ctrlr > Hard Drive settings DID change; the "physical disk option"
    was NOW available with

    disk 2 1117.11 GB bus 0 lun 2 target 2
a rescan disks in disk mgmt. on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (core) did not show any new drives yet; that's
OK, you won't see them there.
I selected scsi disk 1 in the File Server VM's settings > scsi ctrlr > hard drive > physical disk
option, and did likewise with the second scsi hard drive phy. disk 2.
Then I started the File Server VM, and logged in > opened the computer mgmt. console > disk mgmt. >
EUREKA! > there were two, new, unknown/offline/unallocated disks.
The properties of both offline disks identified them as an "HP MSA 2040 SAS SCSI Disk Device"
the offline disk info ballon reads "offline (the disk is offline because of policy set by an
    administrator)
Disk 1 was set to online and initialized as GPT (went with GPT due to size/plans for future growth).
I created a simple volume partition and formatted it as ntfs (1115.6 GB)

    2:22 PM 37%
    3:40 PM done
I opened a unc window to \\VirtualFileServer\e$, pasted a text file and deleted it.
I'm domain admin, so I was able to open the window without sharing or setting ntfs permissions.
    fantástico!

    Hi Sir,
    >>so I need to map an LUN from the MSA 2040 to the WS2012 R2 Std. x64 virtual machine.
Please ensure NPIV is enabled on HBA and SAN switch .
"Virtual Fibre Channel support in Windows Server 2012 leverages Fibre Channel HBAs and switches that are compatible with N_Port ID Virtualization (
NPIV ).  NPIV is leveraged by Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V and the FREE Hyper-V Server 2012 to define virtualized World Wide Node Names (
WWNNs ) and World Wide Port Names (
WWPNs ) that can be assigned to virtual Fibre Channel HBAs within the settings of each VM.  These virtualized World Wide Names can then be zoned into the storage and masked into
the LUNs that should be presented to each clustered Virtual Machine."

  • How to map LUN via Raid Admin?

i want to map a LUN used by a ESXi 5 server to another 2 ESXi servers but I could not find option for it on Raid Admin 1.5.1

It's been a while, but I seem to recall that LUN masking was removed in version 1.5.1 for unknown reasons.
If you can roll back to (I think) RAID Admin 1.5.0 you have the option to use LUN masking, but 1.5.1 doesn't have it.

    Hi,
In order to measure the disk performances or bottlenecks, we need to map the disk devices name from zpool iostat -v and the sar -d output ?
Is there a way to map the 2 device names ?

"/usr/bin/iostat -xpnCXMmz [interval] [count]" would be much easier to use, quicker, and requires no further work on your part.
Otherwise you'll have to convert the MPXIO device back to the underlying physical devices and from that to their equivalent sd device, then lookup those devices in your sar output. It's doable, but not quick or easy to do:
    1) Identify the devices
    # luxadm probe
    2) For each Node WWN listed in "luxadm probe" run:
    # luxadm display WWN
    3) Grep the WWN in /etc/path_to_inst to get the ssd number

    --- luxadm probe ---

  • RAW disks for Oracle 10R2 RAC NO SUN CLUSTER

Yes you read it correctly....no Sun cluster. Then why am I on the Forum right? Well we have one Sun Cluster and another that is RAC only for testing. Between Oracle and Sun, neither accept any fault for problems with their perfectly honed products. Currently, I have multipathed fiber hba's to a Storedge 3510, and I've tried to get Oracle to use a raw lun for the ocr and voting disks. It doesn't see the disk. I've made sure they are stamped for oracle:dba, and tried oracle:oinstall. When presenting /dev/rdsk/C7t<long number>d0s6 for the ocr, I get a "can not find disk path." Does Oracle raw mean SVM raw? Should I create metadisks?

"Between Oracle and Sun, neither accept any fault for problems with their perfectly honed products"...more specific:
Not that the word "fault" is characterization of any liability, but a technical characterization of acting like a responsible stakeholder when you sell your product to a corporation. I've been working on the same project for a year, as an engineer. Not withstanding a huge expanse of management issues over the project, when technical gray areas have been reached, whereas our team has tried to get information to solve the issue. The area has become a big bouncing hot potato. Specifically, when Oracle has a problem reading a storage device, according to Oracle, that is a Sun issue. According to Sun, they didn't certify the software on that piece of equipment, so go talk to Oracle. In the sun cluster arena, if starting the database creates a node eviction from the cluster, good luck getting any specific team to say, that's our problem. Sun will say that Oracle writes crappy cluster verify scripts, and Oracle will say that Sun has not properly certified the device for use with their product. Man, I've seen it. The first time I said O.K. how do we avoid this in the future, the second time I said how did I let this happen again, and after more issues, money spent, hours lost, and customers, pissed --do the math.   I've even went as far as say, find me a plug and play production model for this specific environment, but good luck getting two companies to sign the specs for it...neither wants to stamp their name on the product due to the liability.  Yes your right, I should beat the account team, but as an engineer, man that's not my area, and I have other problems that I was hired to deal with.  I could go on.  What really is a slap in face is no one wants to work on these projects, if given the choice with doing a Windows deployment, because they can pop out mind bending amounts of builds why we plop along figuring out why clusterware doesn't like slice 6 of a /device/scsi_vhci/ .  Try finding good documentation on that.  ~You can deploy faster, but you can't pay more!

Do the install and then when done, rename the disks from block devices back to character devices - there's a Metalink note that covers how to do that. Sorry - not in the office and do not have the Metalink note at hand. However, have used this approach successfully with 3 RAC installation (RHEL4 and RHEL5) in recent months.

  • Deleting Windows Logical Drives and Reallocating for Reuse as Raw Devices

Can I delete 2 obsolete OCR/Voting Disk Windows 2003 SP 1 logical drives on a raw disk? They are at the beginning of a disk volume that contains other raw ASM and active OCR/Voting disk logical drives. I want to recreate these 2 logical drives for testing OCR and Voting disk mirroring.

Well I deleted the old logical drives that were previously used for OCR and Voting Disk. They were on the beginning of a LUN that also has ASM logical drives as well as new logical drives for OCR and Voting. All this was to test out procedures for moving the voting and ocr.
The test went well and everything still worked after deleting the old logical drives. I never got to the point of reprovisiong that space for reuse...but I assume I could. Unfortunately, I am running 10.2.0.1 Windows and the inter-node workings become unstable whenever I do a new config to the raw LUN. I learned the hard way that it is best to set all services to manual on both nodes, reboot and restart CRS a node at a time.
I'm assuming that many of inter-node stability issues are fixed if I got to 10.2.0.3, right?

  • Big LUN's?

I have 3 RAID 5's initializing now - they've been at it about 8 hours.
I'm expecting ach of these RAID 5's to add amount to 3.2 terabytes.
I heard that both Solaris 9 and Solaris 10 (to be fixed in Solaris 10 update 2) have problems with LUN's over 2 terabytes.
Does that mean that I'm either going to have to decrease the capacity of the RAID 5's, or perhaps add all these RAID 5's together into an LVM on the 3511 and then carve up that LVM into a bunch of smaller Logical Disks to be mapped to LUN's individually?
I called Sun tech support about this, and they suggested just trying it, which is something my management has signed off on, so that's probably what I'll be trying first....
    Thanks!

Someone on comp.unix.solaris indicated that LUN's above 2 Terabytes are
just not going to work, and suggested partitioning the logical drives.
However, when I attempt to to do this, I'm getting:
    smft1-root sbin) ./sccli /dev/es/ses0 show partitions
sccli: selected device /dev/es/ses0 [SUN StorEdge 3511 SN#09203A]

    esmft1-root sbin) ./sccli /dev/es/ses0 configure partition 1E7C869C-00 1714421MB

sccli: cannot increase size of only partition
    esmft1-root sbin) ./sccli /dev/es/ses0 configure partition 1E7C869C-01 1714421MB
sccli: selected device /dev/es/ses0 [SUN StorEdge 3511 SN#09203A]
sccli: not enough space available from previous partition
Any suggestions? Is it possible that the initial partition sizes of 0MB
are the problem? And if so, what alternatives do we have?
    Thanks!

    hi onedbaguru,
    thanks for the reply.
    my questions are still there.
As per my plans: i shall use 200GB as ASM DG1 with external redudency, 80GB as ASM DG2 with external redudency and ASM 100GB and each 2GB for voting and OCR with external redudency.
    1. My Question is: how to do it command by command? what i need is, what do from current state and how to do so that my Disks are ready for OCR,VD and ASM assuming if i have no support for system/storage admin?
    2. Do i need to leave first MB for all disks including OCR, VD and ASM Disks as well?
    3. If this thread needs to be moved to some other group then please suggest how to do it?
Point#3 is not important at all, i would love to see some expert DBA replying me here.
    Waiting for Expert guide.

    Adnan

  • Direct Attached Storage LUNs Performance Slow compared to VHDx

    Hi,
We have a problem with performance on pass-thru disks on our VMs and Hyper-V hosts. When we directly provision LUNs from 3PAR via Fibre HBAs the performance is shocking (diskspd tests). However, when we use a VHDx file stored on the same LUN the performance
    is nearly 3 times faster.
Surely this doesnt sound right. We also tried provisioning a SSD volume from our 3PAR but the performance on this is the same compared to VHDx. How can VHDx be faster than SSD volume. Anyone got any ideas on this? What sort of performance do you see on your
    pass-thru disks compared to VHDx.
Really struggling to figure out what could cause should dramatic difference. Any help or suggestions highly appreciated.
    The diskspd parameters i am using are: -o8 -t1 -c25G -d120.
    Thank You

    Hi,
I have done tests with different parameters i.e. 30% write, 100% write, 100% read etc. Also changed the the number of threads, outstanding I/Os etc.
As for the tests with caching (-h) switch goes, please see the below table for results for these tests.

I have also performed some of the tests as per the blog by Jose Barreto but the results are same, performance on VHDx is far better than RAW LUNs whether thats on a VM or Hyper-V Host. If you want me to perform some specific tests and post the results, please
    let me know.
HP have been troubleshooting this problem with us and so far they have been unable to trace the problem. They have looked at 3PAR performance as a whole and that appears OK, they are doing to do some more tests this morning. I will keep you guys posted on
how this develops. Thanks for all your input so far.

  • OCR and Voting Disk Migration to new media

    Hello,
We need to move OCR,voting disk and ASM from one storage media to another .I think ASM related files are very easy to move/re map but how OCR and Voting Disk files will be migrated to the new storage media?
    Thanks,
    S.Mann

    Hi,
    when you said:
"Move Voting Disk : run as root.
    crsctl query css votedisk
    crsctl add css votedisk new_backup_san_device
crsctl query css votedisk - Make sure the new device is added
    crsctl delete css votedisk current_san_device_to_be_encrypted
crsctl query css votedisk - Make sure that the old one is removed "
I supose the new_backup_san_device could be a raw device??
In my system I have a 2 nodes cluster, oracle 10gR2, RAC and ASM
the ocr and voting disk are stored in /dev/raw/raw1 and /dev/raw/raw2
thoses 2 raw devices are mapped with LUNS in the first storade media.
We are about to change it..
So what must I do at this step? What are the logical steps I must done?
add the new LUNS in the nodes and map it as raw devices?
I have this at the moment:
    crw-r----- 1 root oinstall 162, 1 Feb 8 17:33 /dev/raw/raw1
    crw-r----- 1 root oinstall 162, 2 Feb 8 17:33 /dev/raw/raw2
    crw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall 162, 3 Feb 8 17:33 /dev/raw/raw3
in the case of migration, I must add 3 new row devices?
    as this?
    crw-r----- 1 root oinstall 162, 1 Feb 8 17:33 /dev/raw/raw1
    crw-r----- 1 root oinstall 162, 2 Feb 8 17:33 /dev/raw/raw2
    crw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall 162, 3 Feb 8 17:33 /dev/raw/raw3
    crw-r----- 1 root oinstall 162, 1 Feb 8 17:33 /dev/raw/raw4
    crw-r----- 1 root oinstall 162, 2 Feb 8 17:33 /dev/raw/raw5
    crw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall 162, 3 Feb 8 17:33 /dev/raw/raw6
    That's it?
    Thanks to help
