Maximum Performance gain for 10g Rel 2 on Win2003

Hi All,
For a 4 CPU Widows 2003 Adv Server m/c with 10g Rel 2 , 8G RAM, SGA_TARGET = 1.4G,PGA_TARGET= 1.4G which runs Procs involving expensive queries and lots of INSERTS (ETL jobs), what should be the value of PARALLEL_MAX_SERVERS , currently I have given it as 4 (as against 80 which is the default), through the 10g DB Control dashboard I can see only 26% CPU utilization. All my data files are in just 1 partition, do I need to have more disk partitions etc.
Do advise ....how can I have the maximum perf. gain out of the setup.
Regards,
Gaurav S.

Just to add , we have implemented RAID 6 on the Server m/c (its a 8 disk 1TB hard disk)

Performance Gain for IRIX servers if Personal flag is removed from magnus.conf file.
    <p>
As shipped by SGI, some of the server products have a flag set in the
magnus.conf file setting a small footprint for the servers, generally
less than 1 megabyte of memory. This flag is the Personal flag, and
    looks something like:
    <P>
    MaxProcs 1
    MinThreads 1
    MaxThreads 8
    Personal on
    <P>
For one's own personal use, this is fine. But if CGIs are called, or
if the site sees more traffic, then the flag may need to be removed,
    to look like:
    <P>
    MaxProcs 1
    MinThreads 1
    MaxThreads 8
    <P>
A significant performance gain, (and a corresponding increase in
memory used), would be seen by increasing the MaxThreads, as well.
    <P>

That's a comment in the file. It has no effect at all.

  • Suggested migration path for 10G rel 1 (90400) installation to 10.1.2.0.2?

We are a heavy forms/reports shop. We have just gotten done installing 10G Rel 1 (9.0.4.0.0), and now that the latest version of the App Server has been released, I'm wondering what the suggested Migration Path should be? And whether there are any "must have" features that will make an appreciable difference in forms/reports. Or, should we just install the latest patchset for our 904 installation and be done with it?
    Thanks in advance.
    Phil McDermott

Hmm... well, I'm going to be testing the forms/reports features of 10.1.2.0.2 just as soon as I get time, but what I'm hoping for most is that forms will work with SSO through the webcache. There is a bug in 9.0.4 that I'm aware of where SSO fails while working through the webcache. Oracle said they were working on the issue...
...anyone here know if Oracle fixed that bug? It may be a while before I'll have the time to play with 10.1.2.0.2.

  • Materialized views performance gain  estimation

    Hi;
I have to estimate the performance gain of a materialized view for a particular query without creating it.
    that means, i have:
    - A query with initial execution plan
    - A select statement with is considered as a probable MV
i need to show what is the performance gain of creating the MV for the previous Query.
I see the DBMS_MVIEW.EXPLAIN_REWRITE but it shows the performance gain for a yet created MV.
    any idea .
    Thanks

    Hi Bidi,
    - for the first (agregation ones), i don't know how to estimate the performance gain. It's the difference in the elapsed time between the original aggregation and the time required to fetch the pre-computed summary, ususally a single logical I/O (if you index the MV).
i want to determinate the impact of creating materialized views on the performance of a workload of queries. Perfect! Real-world workload tests are always better than contrived test cases!
If you have the SQLAccess advisor, you can define a SQL Tuning Set, and run a representative benchmark with dbms_sqltune:

    Hope this helps. . .

    Hi Sreekant,
    Try this: If it helps
    select g_com_bu_entity bunt_entity
    , g_com_rep_cd srep_cd

  • RAID 1 for performance gain??

in contrast of what i would think, it seems that the OSX implementation of RAID 1 doesn't give a performance gain according to this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106594
since the article is very old, does anyone know whether this the info is still up to date? posts i've found in the archives indicate not..
    thanks
    arri

    Hi arri;
If you are looking to improve performance for an application that is limited by how quickly it is able to get data from or to a disk then you want RAID 0 or striping is the solution. For those applications that are limited by disk I/O RAID 0 can help because it allows the system to do reads/writes to multiple disks in sequence overlapping them for increased performance. This is only true if the performance of the application is limited by it's access to data.

  • Forms 10g rel 1( 9.0.4 ) vs SUN JVM 1.5

    Hello:
From SUN site you can read :
    "Changes in 1.5.0_06
The full internal version number for this update release is 1.5.0_06-b05 (where "b" means "build"). The external version number is 5.0u6.
    Security Enhancements
Prior to this update, an applet or application could specify the version of the JRE on which it would run. This has changed. All applets are executed with the latest JRE version. Unsigned Java Web Start applications that specify a version other than the latest trigger a warning, requiring explicit user permission before the application will run. Signed Java Web start applications are not affected. "
Assuming that our customer will use SUN JVM , NOT Oracle JInitiator.
We have seen that if in a client machine it is installed SUN JVM 1.4.2_10 ( certified ) AND SUN JVM 1.5 or newer.
there is NO WAY to force Forms 9.0.4 applications to run with SUN JVM 1.4.2_10.
In spite of doing the following settings at formsweb.cfg
    # Parameter related to the version of the Java Plugin
    jpi_mimetype=application/x-java-applet;jpi-version=1.4.2_10
when you run forms 9.0.4 applications from a browser in that machine, SUN JVM 1.5 is mandatory used by the browser.
It seems that IT IS IMPOSSIBLE to tell 9.0.4 to use SUN JVM 1.4.2_10 because SUN prevents it according to the above documentation .
Q1) I thank your comments on this
Then, when you look for certification info:
    a) you can get this info for Forms 10g R2
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/htdocs/10gR2/clientsod_forms10gR2.html
    b) you can get this info for Forms 10g R1
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/htdocs/10g/clientsod_forms10g.ht
    ml
Q2) What are ORACLE plans about certification of SUN JVM 1.5 AND Forms 10g Rel 1 ( 9.0.4 ) ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Fernando Rey

    Hi Guys,
I am currently testing our portal with a number of JRE version or Jinitiator and the SUN JRE.
I found some very useful information about changing the registry of the local PC to re-enable specific versioning, see info, below.
I have tested this and it does work, but you need to be careful with Sun JRE versions to ensure that you are on 1.5.0.7 or higher.
Another useful link is this discussion over on the sun forums.
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=730855
    Good Luck
    Scott
We have found a conflict with the Sun JRE 1.4.2.6 and version Sun JRE 1.5.0.6
To get around this conflict a registry key has to be added onto the users PC and the user needs to remove 1.5.0.6 and install 1.5.0.7 or higher. To make matters worse the auto-update feature in version 1.4, if left enabled, will update the user to 1.5.0.6 even thought the latest release from the sun web site is 1.5.0.8 !
Therefore can you add this registry key onto the automated install of the Sun 1.4.2.6 setup as per the instructions below.
Troubleshooting Conflicting JPI Versions on the Desktop:
Per oracle note 368775.1, JRE 1.5 will not allow static versions. In other words version 1.5
may override your required version of 1.4.2. They call it a security feature, but it can reek
havoc with oracle forms. This section addresses a possible workaround.
If your users either need to run JPI 1.5 for any reason, here is the workaround to force
BANNER to use ONLY version 1.4.2.
If you launch forms and in the java console it shows version 1.5.X, perform the following
    steps.
    1. Make a backup of the windows registry
    2. Edit the registry
    3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\
    4. Create a new directory by highlighting the key above and pressing <RIGHT
    CLICK>/<NEW KEY>
    5. Rename the key to [Java Deployment]
    6. Highlight the new key created in step 5 and press <RIGHT CLICK>/<NEW KEY>
    7. Rename this new value to [Policy]
    8. Highlight the new key created in step 7 and press <RIGHT CLICK>/<NEW DWORD>
    9. Rename this DWORD to “EnableSecureStaticVersioning”
Re-launch forms and verify via the java console that the desktop is returning 1.4.2.

  • Cannot install Oracle 10g rel. 2 on Win Server 2003 SB

    Hello,
I cannot install Oracle 10g rel. 2 on Win Server 2003 SB, because when the the configuration assistant installer try to copy the db files, it stop with the following errors:
    ORA-24324 Service Handle not Initialized
    ORA-24323 Value not authorized
ORA-28547 Connection to Server failed probable Oracle NET ADMIN errorRegards
    Siyavuş

You should be connected as a local administrator to perform the install process.
Try to perfom a software only install, then once you make sure the installation was successful, launch the dbca. It is important for you to use a local account to perform the installation and db setup process, otherwise, if you have authentication problems, even if you comment the authentication line at the sqlnet.ora file you will be facing issues that will make fail the assistant, since it is designed to work assuming the user is OS authenticated.

OK, I did this once and did not follow the oracle docs
If you saved your targets.xml before you started you might save it by renaming it back.
(Double check to make sure you did not miss a rename)
Otherwise, all I have to offer is my rough notes:
    1. Backup the file $ORACLE_HOME/sysman/emd/targets.xml.
    [oracle@ias02 emd]$ pwd
    /u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/sysman/emd
    cp targets.xml targets.xmlbackup
    2. Modify the file targets.xml by changing all the occurrences of the wrong reports server name by the correct one.
    i.e. Replace rep_test_midtier with rep_new (4 places - changes)
Copy the conf file as follows: ( this will named different from system to system )
    cp /u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/reports/conf/rep_pia_oracleas.conf /u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/reports/conf/rep_fam.conf
    run this script:
/u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/bin/addNewServerTarget.sh rep_fam          (change rep_fam to new report server name)
    3.Update the changed configuration .
    /u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/dcm/bin/dcmctl updateconfig -ct opmn -v -d
    /u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/dcm/bin/dcmctl resyncinstance -v -d
    4. Restart the Application Server Control Console
    /u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/bin/emctl stop iasconsole
    /u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/bin/emctl start iasconsole
    In the file:
    /u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/reports/config/reportsConfig.properties
Change the Reports_Server_Name setting from rep_test_midtier to rep_fam (change rep_fam to new report server name)
Best Wishes (I was able to save mime)
The other option is to reinstall

  • Real-time apply in Maximum Performance Mode Not Working

We have configured physical standby database in maximum performance mode. It's working perfectly fine. Archive logs are being applied to the physical standby.
We can open the DB in read-only mode, but real-time apply is not working. Physical standby database is lagging behind the primary db by an archive log. As soon as primary database generates an archive log, it's transported over to the standby and applied immediately by the media recovery process. But real-time redo is not working. Standby redo logs have been configured.
    On Physcial Standby:
    SQL> alter database recover managed standby database using current logfile disconnect ;
    Database Altered.
    SQL> select group#, DBID, status,first_time, last_time from v$standby_log ;
    GROUP# DBID STATUS FIRST_TIM LAST_TIME
    4 UNASSIGNED UNASSIGNED
    5 UNASSIGNED UNASSIGNED
    6 UNASSIGNED UNASSIGNED
    7 UNASSIGNED UNASSIGNED
    SQL> select * from v$dataguard_stats ;
    NAME
    VALUE
    UNIT TIME_COMPUTED
    apply lag
    +00 00:31:36
    day(2) to second(0) interval 22-JUN-2010 08:42:06
    transport lag
    +00 00:31:34
    day(2) to second(0) interval 22-JUN-2010 08:42:06
As you could see from the output above, value of transport and apply lag is equal to the elapsed time since last archive log switch.

    Hi,
In your case you are using ARC process for redo transfer as you have not specified any process in log_archive_dest_2 and default is arch.
I will suggest you to use LGWR to transfer the redo to standby and also check the size of standby redo logs on standby is same to the size of online redo logs on primary

  • Is it a bug in Oracle 10g rel 1

I have server installed in Oracle 10g rel 1 and I have client installed as oracle10grel2. I am unable to export data from client machine. It is giving me a error. Can anyone help me out.
    Regards
    Vijay Kumar

    You need exp from 10gR1.
Oracle works in downwards compatibility mode.
This means lower version clients can connect to higher versions server, not necessarily the other way around.
exp is a specific case as exp has sql statements hardcoded in the tool.
    Those statements are version specific.
(One would wish Oracle would change exp to bail out immediately when connected to a lower version database)Due to this only, I need the URL for client of version 10g rel 1 for the server 10g rel 1.

  • Is there a maximum program size for the AWM GUI?

Is there a maximum program size for the AWM GUI?
I have a program that I migrated from Oracle Exress to Oracle 9i. The program runs fine, but I get buffer errors whenever I edit it with the Analytic Workspace Manager GUI. Only my longest program has this problem.
Has anyone seen this before? Is there a fix/workaround?
    Thank you,
    James

This problem is solved with the 10.0.0.1.0 AWM client, which is on the 10G CD.

  • Not able to get performance gain using Multidimensional Clustering

    Hi All,
We are trying to test the effect of Multidimensional Clustering on the
performance of queries, infocubes/DSO loading and deletion of requests
    from BW objects.
Unfortunately we are not able to see any performance gain when we use
    MDC.
We are using following steps to test MDC:
1> We have created copy infocube ZPOS10_CP from original infocube
    ZPOS10_V5.
2>In the new infocube ZPOS10_CP, we switched on the MDC Settings.
3> We are using following dimensions as MDC Dimensions:
           1> SID_0CALMONTH Calendar Year/Month
2> Dimension ZPOS10_CP5 (This dimension is based on Site, Dist.
    Channel etc).
Dimensions were selected based on consideration that:
We should use those dimensions which are often used in query
    Restriction.
When we are trying to load the same file in both original infocube with
NO MDC and new infocube with MDC there does not seem to be any major
improvement. Both of these loads are taking almost same time.
Can you please tell us how can we effectively use MDC? Is there any
setting that we need to do regarding extent size of tablespace etc?
Kindly help us to resolve this issue.
    Regards,
    Nilima Rodrigues

    Hi,
In MDC we are not creating any dimensions.
Basically we just select some dimensions of Infocube as MDC Dimensions.
based on the suggestions provided by SAP on MDC, we have selected 0CALMONTH as one of the MDC Dimensions.
Other dimensions are chosen on the following recommendation provided by SAP:
    ●      Select dimensions for which you often use restrictions in queries.
    ●      Select dimensions with a low cardinality.

  • AlertfileErr: ORA-02097 and ORA-00439 on Oracle 10g Rel 2 Stdrd Instances

    Hello,
I need some help for the following alert file erros, that I get periodically on every database instance.
ORA-02097: parameter cannot be modified because specified value is invalid
ORA-00439: feature not enabled: Database resource manager
I red in another newsforum, that this ist a bug, cause Oracle Standard Edition uses functionality of the Enterprise Edition(=DB Resource manager). Is there any workaround for this? I don't have access to the Oracle metalink section.
Database Resource Manager isn't installed in my environment.
    Environment:
    Windows 2003 SP1
Oracle Database 10g Rel 2 (10.2.0.1) Standard Edition
    Hope anybody can help me.
    Thanks in advance,
    Zigi

    Yes,
and That's exactly my problem. I haven't installed the resource manager. And I don't know which process, session, jobs or what ever tries to use the resource manager.
I only created round about 50 Tables and views in the database, no stored procedures or anything special, no jobs.... only simple SQL Statements.
and I'll get this message nearly every 6 hours. so what is going on there.
The only thing, that i found was this:
    http://ora-02097.ora-code.com/msg/49049.html
I don't have access to metalink so I don't know how to solve this problem.
    Can anybody help?
