MAXL to update substitution variable

I want to confirm that using the MAXL statement to alter a substitution variable that is not specific to any APP or any DB will not work.
In other words, the MAXL statemet to alter a substitution variable will only work if that variable is assigned to an app and and DB..
Thanks

Doesn't "alter +system+ set variable..." work?

  • How to Update Substitution Variable

    Hi All,
    we are using Essbase 9.3.1.2. i am trying to create substitution variable using essbase console and i am getting an error as 1051082: substitution variable currmonth already exists however i have deleted all my substitution variables before creating them. When i checked in the backend using maxl i am able to see that the new substitution variable is created (*Currmonth*) however in console when i right click on the server --> edit -> variables i am not able see that variable that i have created.
    Can anyone of you help me out...

    Are you sure you're not creating the substitution variable at say, the database level, but are then looking at the application or server level? Or the reverse?
    What do you get in MaxL when you type:
    display variable all ;
    If you set a variable, can you use it in an Essbase retrieve through the Excel add-in? If yes, I'd say the variable really exists and it's EAS that is wrong. There's always the restart of the EAS service to try.

  • MaxL statement for substitution variables

    Hi,I'm trying get a script together that changes all my substitution variables, and I'm able to do this using:alter database application.database set variable string;but how do I set the substitution variables for (all apps) and (all dbs)?Any help appreciated.ThanksSunil

    I don't think MaxL is going to do this for you, although you could always use a positional parameter to set the value.
    I'm not a big fan of passing the system date to an Essbase process as it so often varies from the data date.
    Usually, I create an external scripting process (in my case, in the past, usually VBScript, I would probably tilt towards perl now) that read the file, found the year and month, and then called the MaxL with parameter lne variables to set the Substitution Variables. This is not fancy code -- the error checking is the majority of the work.

  • Maxl statement for substitution variable..

    Friends,
    Do we have a maxl command that will return substitution variables at the server level along with their values.
    This would help us do a quick check of the system at all environments using VLOOKUP before the cycle starts..
    The manual check seems boring :(
    Thanks,
    RN.

    Sir, I love the way u write your blogs :)
    this blog was just awsome with the conversation with JJ explaining with such details..^^^Thank you for your kind words. It really makes my day when I hear that people get real value out of my blog. But to be honest, I am but a conduit for Jason's knowledge. :)

  • Can't update substitution variables

    In EAS for a Planning app (v 9.3.1), I am able to list the application's substitution variables.
    However, when I change the value and click "Set" I receive the message "Create variable failed for row x" (where "x" is the row number of the variable I'm trying to change.
    I am accessing the app as an administrator, have used the same steps as in the documentation, and don't know what is causing the kick-out.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks

    Found the reason in the ever so nifty Messages panel.
    Apparently, there's a higher level of admin access than mine.
    Thanks

  • Substitution Variable update issue

    Hi,
    I am using Essbase 9.2.0.3. I have noticed a problem afetr updating Substitution Variable.
    The calculation script which uses the Substitution Variable works well after updating the variable.
    But the Member formula doesn't work, unless we restart the application .The member formula is in Period dimension to calculate QTD/YTD.
    Formula is: QTD=@MEMBER(@CONCATENATE (QTD,&ActEnd));
    Have anyone come across this? why the outline formula is not taking the updated value fronm Substitution Variable?
    Thanks,
    Tarini

    Hi,
    I reported this issue to the support and it was classified as: Bug 13072601: USING SUBSTITUTION VARIABLES IN FORMULAS OF OUTLINE MEMBERS.
    But as support didn't see this behavior as unusual or as a bug I went deeper and requested for enhancement. I asked them if it is possible to introduce a config setting which would switch on/off automatic updates of subs vars in outline as well as in partitions.
    Status is: Approved for Future Release, but there is no fixed version available yet.
    The ER# is: 13107378: AN ESSBASE CONFIG SETTING WHICH MAY SWITCH ON/OFF AUTOMATIC UPDATES OF SUBSVARIA
    So anyone interested can requested them for status.

  • Substitution Variable Issue while exporting from Essbase.sec file

    Hello All,
    I have an unusually distinct problem.
    I have 2 environments (Development and Production) where each environment has a seperate server with Essbase installed in it.
    When I tried to get information of the Substitution variables using the 'export security_file to data_file' command through MaxL and then checked the output file in Development, it showed me the right number of substitution variables and their values.
    But when I did he same with my Production environment it gives exactly 1 less no of substitution variables in the export file, specifically the last substitution variable that was updated through the Essbase Administration Console.
    I guess it is not updating the Essbase.sec file with the last updated Substitution variable. But I can't understand why since the same functionality works in development but not in production.
    Thank You.

    Hi all,
    In addition, I exported the Essbase.sec file after a long time after changing the Substitution variable and now it does show the updated substitution variable.
    I feel that Essbase does refresh the Essbase.sec file but after a long time. Is there some setting within Essbase that is done which refreshes the artifact files after a while. Or is this a setting within the system in which Essbase has been installed (in my case Linux).
    Also the Substitution Variable that has been created is for (all apps) and (all dbs). Is this the reason why this is not working because I tried changing some other Substitution variable which is for a specific app and a specific dbs and it worked fine.
    Thank You.

  • Set  Substitution Variables automaticaly with system time?

    does anyone know of a utility or a method to automatically update substitution variables with the system time?[email protected]

    Hi, another solution with maxl under NT, using environment variables:create a file test.msh:spool on to c:\test.out;login $1 $2 on $3; alter database $4 set variable $5 $6;echo "variable altered";spool off;exit;and launch via the command prompt:essmsh test.msh admin password localhost Demo.Basic datetime '%TIME%'for the date for instance:essmsh test.msh admin password localhost Demo.Basic datetime '\""%DATE%\""'Eric BelmonPartake Consulting.

  • Migration of Substitution Variables

    Hi,
    I have two environments setup and the migration path defined for transporting an application from one environment to the other is a complete backup and then restoring it on the other environment. Each time there is a change in a substitution variable I have to manually create it from the Administration Services Console.
    Is there a way to automate this process?
    Shehzad

    Hi,
    In EAS you don't have to manually create it, if you add both essbase servers in EAS you can copy variables between them.
    Otherwise you can use Maxl to update/create variables.
    e.g.
    alter application PlanSamp set variable Current_month July;
    or
    alter application PlanSamp.Consol set variable Current_month July;
    All details available in the techref - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10530_01/doc/epm.931/html_esb_techref/techref.htm

  • Sharing complex substitution variable values between ASO and BSO databases

    We have ASO and BSO Essbase database member names with spaces in, and need to store some of these member names in substitution variables. However, this has to be done differently for ASO and BSO, due to calc script syntax requiring double quotes and MDX requiring square brackets. For example:
    ASO:
    &CurWeek value = Week 1
    MDX: [&CurWeek]
    BSO:
    &CurWeek value = "Week 1"
    Calc Script: &CurWeek
    As a result, the substitution variables cannot be shared between the ASO and BSO cubes, since the BSO variable value requires double quotes due to the space in the member name.
    Is there a way to get the above to work with both ASO and BSO? Can the double quotes be escaped in calc script syntax? Or can the double quotes be removed in the MDX formula?

    Hi TimG,
    Apologies for such a late reponse to this, genuinely haven't had a spare second to reply until now!
    Yes, I suspect a complex alias name may be the best solution here, and to remove the spaces from the actual member names.
    I was not aware of the latter part at all. My colleague has confirmed as much on this too - DBAG 11.1.2.1 pp117 & 118:
    "Note: If a substitution variable value is numeric or a member name starting with a
    numeral or containing the special characters referred to above is to be used both
    in MDX and non-MDX situations, create two substitution variables, one without
    the value enclosed in quotation marks and one with the value in quotation marks."
    "To ensure that a new substitution variable value is available in formulas, partition definitions,
    and security filters, stop and restart the application. All other uses of substitution variables are
    dynamically resolved when used."
    This last paragraph is the most concerning since we were planning to be able to update substitution variables values and then access the new values from calc scripts and formulae instantaneously. This quirk is unexpected and a little inconvenient. We may have to look at scheduling a change of substitution variable value overnight, followed by a stop/start of the app ready for the next day, and to work around needing to access changed values instantly.

  • How to set timing of migration of Substitution Variables to Planning

    Hi,
    After we update Substitution Variable, we noticed it takes a 5 mins before it flows to Planning
    I read somewhere that there is a way to set timing (5 mins) of migration of Substitution Variables to Planning. Anyone knows where that is?

    Hi,
    You need to set a property, details are all here :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12825_01/epm.111/hp_admin/ch06s03s12.html

  • Can we use Substitution variables in MAXL?

    Hi,
    Can we use substitution variables in MAXL script?
    I have to run this MAXL command for clearing a slice of ASO cube on V11.1.1.3.
    alter database Apname.DBname clear data in region 'CrossJoin({[2009]},{[Dec]})';
    I am planning to use Current_year & Current_month variables instead of hardcoding 2009 & Dec as I have to use this everymonth to clear the current months data.
    If it is allowed, what is the syntax?
    Is there any alternative apart from substitution variables?
    Appreciate your thoughts.
    Thanks,
    -Ethan.

    You would just use ampersand and the variable name instead of the hard coding e.g. &yearVar &periodVar.
    Not tried it on aso clears but in theory it should work as ...'CrossJoin({&yearVar},{&periodVar})';
    just change yearVar and periodVar for your substitution variable names.
    Cheers

  • Use of Essbase substitution variables in filename of a MaxL report script

    Hey guys.
    Is there a way that I can embed the value of one or more Essbase substitution variables in the filename of a report script in a MaxL command?
    I'm running a report script that uses sub. vars for entities and accounts and based on which of those members are set in the variables I want the filenames to include those member names. I'm looking for a way to include the &varName in the filename using the export database command.
    THANKS!

    Not really.
    If you want to do a lot of string mangling in a script outside of the report script, you can use DISPLAY VARIABLE:
    MAXL> display variable CurMo;
    application         database            variable            value
    +-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+-------------------
                                             CurMo               MayRegards,

  • Using substitution variable with multiple values in Maxl Command

    Hi All,
    Is there any option to use multiple values in 1 substitution variable and use them in a Maxl command.
    alter database $app_name.$db_name clear data in region '{CrossJoin(CrossJoin(CrossJoin({StrTOMbr(&Months)},{XXX, YYY}),{StrTOMbr(&CURYR)}), {ZZZ})}'physical;
    In the above case
    Maxl is not working if I have multiple months in &Months Substitution variable.
    Let me know if there is an alternate option to implement this.
    Thanks
    Sathish

    What is the value of &Months?
    If you put that exact value into the code, does it work?

  • MaxL Pass parameter zu create substitution variable

    Hi everybody,I'm trying to pass a parameter from a DOS batch file to a MaxL script to create a substitution variable with that parameter.DOS batch file:...set var_version = "Final Version"essmsh Test.msh %var_version%MaxL file:....alter application TEST set variable SUBST_VERSION $1=> the substitution variable should be "Final Version" (incl. double-quotes because of the whitespace in the variable's value), but in fact, the substitution variable will be "Final" (without any double-quotes; they have been stripped by MaxL!?)=> if I don't use a parameter it works:alter application TEST set variable SUBST_VERSION '"Final Version"'=> I tried the following statement to keep my double-quotes, but the parameter won't be expanded then:alter application TEST set variable SUBST_VERSION '"$1"'So, does anybody know how to pass a parameter containing whitespaces to create a substitution variable within a MaxL script?Thanks for your hints!Marc

    Hi,Try this one:1. Create batch file which will produse you a whole MAXL statement. This can be done with > or >> statement at the end of the commanad.E.g.: whole_command_with_"Final" >> to file.txt2. Execute maxl with above generated file.Hope this helps,Grofaty
