MBP Sleep or Shutdown which should I be choosing?

I recently read a section of the book OSX Missing Manual and it mentioned that cycling a Macs power was rarely required. Being a recent convert from the world of Windows I have always powered off my laptop at the end of the day and powered it on again when needed and I have been doing the same with my MBP.
Is it really advisable to put my MBP to sleep rather than shutting down even if I will be transporting the MBP to and from the office?

A couple of things to consider:
1) Regardless of how great OS X is there are memory leaks and problems with apps. Eventually a reboot is a good thing. But OS X is great that way in that it will run for weeks before a reboot might even help.
2) For me I go from just a laptop at home to plugging in a 20" Dell flat screen and a keyboard/mouse at work. My MacBookPro doesn't always wake up from sleep nicely in this configuration. Sometimes it has presented me with a blue screen but no log in prompt. One time I even had to power down then reboot to get anywhere. I've never had this happen just as a laptop waking from sleep.
3) If you plan to travel on an airplane I would HIGHLY recommend a shutdown. Here is way. Most airplane cabins are pressurized and present no problems to humans or computers. However a friend of mine was on a flight that experienced pressurization difficulties. For a short time the cabin rose to almost 10,000 feet before the pilots got it under control. Several elderly people passed out etc. His Window XP laptop had just been put to sleep but something woke it up and started the disk spinning. Disk heads are designed to "fly" over the disk on a micro-cushon of air. At 10,000 feet the air was too thin and the head could not fly. It scraped the disk and tore the heads off the drive. (Rare occurance yes... Do I recommend not using a laptop on a plane while in flight, absolutely not, but when you are done shut it down that way you know for sure your disk is not spinning accidentally while you are boarding, loading and unloading).
This is also a warning for private pilots. I fly regularly and most aircraft I have access to will do 12,000 to 15,000 feet but are not pressurized so I carry O2. But I had a girl along for a ride from Fort Collins to Wenatchee Washington one time who at 12,000 feet was bored and wanted to use her laptop. I caught her just in time before she ran the risk of destroying it.
Anyway these are just my thoughts. I love the concept of sleep but sort of don't trust it fully. That's probably my Windows paranoia coming out.

  • What is better for a fast MBP sleep or shutdown

    Hi
is it okay to shutdown the computer instead of sleep like 4 time in 24 hours?
I would like to know what's best for the MBP. because I shut it down like once every three days or so. But when I leave it sleeping a lot of times I come and find it dead and needs to be plugged. So I'm thinking of shutting it down more often to save the battery.
    what do you think?
    P.S. running Lion OS X 10.7.2

If the computer will not be used for more than 8 hours then it would be better to shut it down and save power. Otherwise, use sleep. However, if you will leave the computer near an AC outlet then connect the AC adaptor. Use the battery when you cannot connect to an AC outlet.

  • Which java do I choose?

I've got java working with dos so I thought that may have helped make bluej work...I was wrong.
However I do still want it working even if my efforts are only half hearted now. I
    My question:
On the launcher I have the choice of 2 javas:
    c:\program files\java\jdk1.5.0_06
    and
    c:\sun\appserver\jdk
    which should I be choosing?

    OK.
    That's the one I had....
Its working strange, not as much on the total crashes as I used to get (imagination?) but it is working weird. I can compile but then when I go to click on run it decompiles itself...

  • Which is better... Sleep or shutdown?

Which is better for your computer... sleep or shutdown?
    Thanks

Technically, it doesn´t matter much if you shut your computer down or just put it to sleep., i.e. nothing is more detrimental to your computer´s "well-being" than the other, respectively.
I´m not sure about the Sleep Mode with the iMac, but I believe it´s a suspend-to-ram, right?
That would mean any unsaved data isn´t saved and could get lost if the computer fails to wake up from sleep.
That could be a point against making the computer sleep.
When it´s sleeping, the computer will also consume a steady, albeit very low quantity of electrical power. From an energy-saving standpoint, that could also be counted as a negative aspect.
MacBooks and MBPs use suspend-to-disk as sleep mode, which means the contents of the ram is saved onto the hard drive and then the computer is fully turned off. Takes a bit longer than suspend-to-ram.
I always put my computers to sleep... both my iBook G3 and my Win laptop.
My win laptop will automatically enter suspend-to-disk after 2 hours if it isn´t used again by then.

  • Macbook pro will not sleep or shutdown

Help! My macbook restarts anytime I try to put it to sleep or shutdown. The only way is to do a hard shutdown.

Start by removing "Kaspersky," which is worse than useless and should be removed even if it's not causing the problem.
Remove "Kaspersky Security" by following the instructions on this page. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. The product includes a Safari extension that may not be removed by the uninstaller.
Back up all data before making any changes.

  • X201s not properly going to sleep / hibernate / shutdown mode and instead gets piping hot

My 3.5 year old X201s that has been working like a charm has developed a nasty problem:
None of the "normal" methods to get the system to "turn off" seems to be working any longer. The OS (Win7Pro-32bit) does its normal thing during  sleep / hibernate / shutdown, the screen eventually goes blank but the system never goes into the appropriate powered down state. The area under the CPU becomes hot and the system is totally unresponsive to Fn button, mouse button, lid opening, power button press.
    More specifically:
"Start->Shutdown" or single Power button press results in battery LED solidly lit, no "beep". Systemis  unresponsive to subsequent normal power on.
"Fn+F4 Sleep" or Close Lid  results in Battery and Moon LED solidly lit, single "beep". System is unresponsive to any subsequent normal wakeup attempts.
"Fn+F4 Hibernate" results in Battery and Power and LED solidly lit, moon blinking, no "beep". System is unresponsive to any subsequent normal wakeup attempts.
In all cases, I have to press and hold the power button for 5 sec (at which point all LEDs turn off as they should) to then be able to normally boot the system again. Upon booting, Windows does not complain of any improper shutdown and boots normally from scratch (sleep/shutdown scenario) and in the hibernate scenario, resumes properly.
I have the latest BIOS and Thinkvantage updates installed, have turned off Blutooth, disabled "always-on USB" , have also uninstalled Thinkvantage Power Manager but have not seen any change.
Reading some of the other threads on here about aging thermal paste and hot running CPUs, could this have fried some of my Power management circuitry?
    Could an overheated
Any insight would be much appreciated!

    Some follow-up:
    - I applied the Intel ME firmware update 6.1.32.1076, see
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-77175
but this did not fix anything.
    - Reinstalled latest Lenovo Power Manager and driver, - no luck.
    - Recovered original factory image, - still the same ill-behavior.
Has anyone had experience with sending out of warranty laptops to Lenovo for repair (likely motherboard replacement)?

  • G4 MacMini won't sleep or shutdown after update to 10.4.8

Since updating using software update to 10.4.8 on the logout screen I mostly used the "Sleep" option after logging out from my account. To begin with things seemed fine, but now, it won't go to sleep. If I click on the button to sleep the computer, the controls get greyed out for about 30 seconds to a minute, then return to their normal state - but the computer does not enter sleep mode.
Shutdown doesn't work either! I had to hold the power switch on the back down for a few seconds to force it to switch off. Interestingly, the internet connection light on the router was flashing irregularly while I was waiting for it to switch off.
I have reset the permissions (only after the install, not before), reset the PRAM, and searched the system preferences to see if something is glaringly obvious as being wrong but have found nothing and no have no further clue what I can do...
Is it related to my not wanting iTunes to provide Album Artwork at all? For some time, every time I opened iTunes it demanded I update my Album Artwork, but I don't want to and don't have an iTunes account. I had put off downloading both 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0 for almost a week - until software update failed to provide a Cancel button for me to refuse again!
How can I get sleep and shutdown to work properly?
MacMini, PowerBook, PowerMac G5 DC   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Mac OS X Server 10.4.8

    Problem Solved!
I copied the combo update over the existing system but this alone changed nothing. Because I was unsure of which of my seemingly many OS X disks to load I rang Applecare (thank God I signed up for the three years of extra phone support - a real bargain) and they suggested I do a PMU reset - after which everything worked fine - so far.
They warned me about not doing a PMU reset very often (I guess the PMU can only stand a certain number of these events before breaking). In order to do one follow these steps:
    1) Switch off computer;
    2) Unplug ALL leads and power cables to the computer;
    3) Wait ten seconds;
    4) Simultaneously hold the power on button down while plugging the power cable in to your Mac;
    5) Connect your other cables.
    6) Switch on and go.
For me, this fixed all my other problems - Sleep, Restart, Shutdown, Printing, iSight, Internet connection speed, Quick Time performance, and so far I haven't seen anything else wrong to fix. Hopefully there won't be anything else to fix!
If anything does go wrong after this, I will do the Archive and Install, which was the next suggestion from Apple which I did not need to do. So far.
Thanks to all those who gave suggestions, I appreciate your help.
    Thanks,
    Mac

  • My HP Split x2 cannot go to sleep or shutdown, keep waking up by itself

My HP Split x2 recently cannot go to sleep or shutdown. It will sleep / shutdown for a few second and wake up by itself until battery died.
    Anyone having the same issue?
Seems that HP is not reliable because beside this I also have pointer freeze and SD Card slot that cannot read SD Card (can't even spring out the SD card out properly).
I will not buy HP device anymore !!!

    Hey @Rayzng ,
    Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand you're experiencing issues with your Split x2 notebook not going to sleep, freezing, and the SD card reader not working.
The sleep issue should be pretty easy to figure out. On your PC, open an elevated command prompt window and type the following command: powercfg -requests
Press enter and it should show you any display, system, awaymode, execution, or perfboost settings/drivers/programs that are affecting sleep settings.
Let me know what shows up in the results and we can go from there.
For the SD slot, I need to know your exact model. For information on finding your product or model number click here: Finding Your HP Product Model Number.
For the freezing, the general steps to take include updating drivers and BIOS. Main drivers to focus on should be the display adapter, wireless adapter, and chipset. Drivers can be downloaded by entering your product info here: HP - Drivers & Downloads.
This should get us started. I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Thanks!

  • The restart/sleep/cancel/shutdown menu shows up all the time.

We have one of the newest imacs (beveled back), and it has started automatically asking if we want to restart/sleep/cancel/shutdown as if we had pressed the on/off button. If I hit cancel it comes back up again shortly thereafter.
Is it a faulty on/off button that need to go in for repair?

You should really use the Apple dropdown menu to select Sleep, Restart or Shutdown instead of using the power button.
To "Allow the power button to put the computer to sleep" Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Energy Saver and check the box "Allow the power button to put the computer to sleep"
Noting that: the power button should only be used to shutdown an iMac, if it is totally unresponsive.

    Hi,
You can use a jQuery dialog.
    http://docs.jquery.com/UI/Dialog
    e.g. create html region, just say you give the region static id: floating-region, make it hidden by adding attributes: style="display: none;"then do like: $('#floating-region).dialog();
    I made another post on steps to create a dialog. See: {message:id=9506160}

If you received character strings' variable value such as '56,34',
then you can get it as follows.
    where regexp_instr( '56,34' , '(^|,)('||t.catid||')(,|$)') >= 1
    Ex)
    with
    test_param as
(select '56' param from dual union all
select '34' from dual union all

    select '5,344' from dual

select 3 from dual union all
select 56 from dual union all
select 34 from dual union all
select 566 from dual union all
    select 344 from dual

  • Which should I use to import my photos in tho my MacBook Pro - iPhoto '11 or Lightroom 4 ? And, why, please ?

    I have two questions, please.
    1. Which should I use to import, edit and manage my photos - iPhoto 11 or Lightroom 4, and why?
    2. How do I save my edited photos as albums and export them to be stored in my Apple Time Capsule for members of my family to import and add to their Apple devices.
    Thank you.

This is an impossible question for anyone to answer for you. Only you know what you're shooting - Raw or Jpeg? Are you a Pro or an Amateur? If you're an Amateur are you a serious hobbyist or just a guy who snaps pics at the kid's birthday parties to send to Grandma.
You can compare the feature sets of the two apps. In a nutshell:
iPhoto is a $15 app. It's designed with the family snapper in mind. For that you get a lot: Lossless processing, complete management, lightweight editing, integration throughout the entire OS.
LIghtroom is about $150 these days. It's designed for a professional setting.  For that you get lossless processing - but a lot more fine control, less management, powerful editing, no integration with the OS.
From a photography point of view, if you're a pro or a serious hobbyist then there's no discussion. If you're not, then LR might well be a sledgehammer to crack a monkey nut.
If you want all the convenience of iPhoto with the power of Lightroom, check out Aperture.
As to your Q2: depends on your answer to Q1. But that's not an intended use of a Time Capsule.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
