MBP15 Retina: Cant wake from Display Sleep

I've bought my MBP15 with Retina a week or two ago.
You know how your display turns off after a minute of leaving you Mac idle?
When I touch the trackpad or any key on the keyboard to log back in, the display turns back on for 1 second, then goes black again.
It continues to do this everytime I touch a key or the trackpad. Turns back on for 1 second, then turns off again. I can't log in, and have to force-shutoff the Mac to get back in.
This is very unfortunate, as I'm from Guatemala. We don't have Apple Stores here. So I can't just walk in and get it serviced.
Anyone has a solution? I've already done a permission fix on the Disk Utility, to no avail.
+ If I close the lid to make it sleep, then open it up again, it turns back on no proble. It's only when the display sleeps.
Thanks so much everyone.

Hi Nikolaus
I have the same issue. Having got myself in the habit of a quick swipe across the Magic Trackpad to reawaken my external 27" display from display sleep, this bug is very annoying. It happens for me when connected to AC power, so the problem is not restricted to running off battery power.
I shall report this as (another) Lion bug here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Please feel free to add your own complaint, too - the more the merrier

  • MBP (early 2009) won't wake from Display Sleep

My MBP has started to not wake from Display Sleep (the machine is not sleeping, only the display). The only way to get it back is to force power off by holding the power button down.
The weird thing is, when I power it on, it shows the 'loading RAM from disk' progress bar down the bottom of the all grey screen, as if the battery ran out. But I have it connected to a power source. Once it loads the RAM, the screen goes blank and it hangs. Another force restart and it boots to the login screen as per normal.
One thing I have noticed is that when this all happens (ie, when I try to wake it and nothing happens) the fans are on about medium speed and its very warm, as if there is some process thats causing high CPU usage and preventing the display waking. I usually have a few browsers open, iTunes, etc, nothing out of the ordinary.
I might try connecting via screen sharing next this happens to see if its responsive over the network -- i'll post my findings here.
I have screen saver with password protection turned on, and its connected to an external apple display.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

    Try a SMC reset.

  • External Display doesn't wake from display sleep

My display is set to sleep after an idle period (computer itself set to not sleep), when I return to the computer and wake the displays the external display most of the time does not "wake" or come back with picture. I need to disconnect the adapter and plug it in again.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

    Guys, please read THIS thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1760586&tstart=0
EVERYONE is experiencing this bug if you're using your new MacBook Pro with an external display. In the thread above, I detail how to fix it without having to unplug the DisplayPort adapter.
    The symptoms you're experiencing are:
1.) Bizarre interference all over the external display when either a) waking your notebook from sleep, or b) turning screen on if the screen is set to turn off after x minutes.
2.) External display not actually turning on at all after either a) waking your notebook from sleep, or b) turning screen on if the screen is set to turn off after x minutes.
The fix is listed in the above thread. It's only a temporary workaround, and Apple REALLY needs to address this issue ASAP.

  • Cannot wake from display sleeping freezes up

I just did a HD upgrade on my 24" imac 2.16ghz to a 1TB drive. All went well as I have done several others and I also switched from 10.4.11 to 10.5 and updated to 10.5.8 with no issues. I have a problem with it waking back up when the display goes to sleep, first it comes up to an all black screen with nothing on it at all and then it comes up to a frozen image of the screen saver with a spinning beach ball. No matter how long it sits it stays there unless I hold the power button to turn it off and restart it. I also was running 10.5.8 prior to this in an OWC external enclosure with the same brand/model 1TB drive and it did it with that too but I attributed that to it being an external drive. Any ideas???

  • My iMac 24" late 2006 refuses to wake from deep sleep,

My iMac is refusing to wake from deep sleep or from a shutdown, will start if I persist in either using safe mode or command mode (cmd + s)but can take many attempts, have repaired permissions and verified disk, on permissions it is constantly changing the permissions on preference panes as listed below, but this is a shortened view, there are 23 lines like this.
    permissions differ on "SystemLibrary/PreferencePanes/Displays.prefPane/Contents/Resources/sk.lproj/Di splaysPref.nib" should be drwxr-xr-x they are -rw-r- -r- -
Would it be ok to trash the Preference Pane folder and let it rebuild ???
    Any help welcome

Helio, you can mostly ignore repeated Permission Repairs.
To remove Prefpanes, right click on one & nchoose Remove.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • 27 inch iMac to hang during waking from display sleep

Every morning when I come to work and try to wake my imac from display sleep (not full mac sleep) it will freeze.
    the freeze goes like this:
the screen is dark and I press the space bar to wakr the screen.
it will show the desktop and folders just as I left it but after 10 seconds the screen starts to populate with pinkish graphic squares - imagine the old space invaders graphics - this will get worse and will eventually freeze.
the freeze will happen quicker if I try to open up a folder or application.
I can restart the mac and it will freeze again - I can usually restart 3 or 4 times before I can eventually get the mac to work fine.
If I leave the mac for an hour during the day for a meeting say and on the return it will freeze when I try to wake the screen.
Spoke with Apple technical support who say reinstall software or try swopping user account - the problem I have with this is it will take me half a day to get the applications back to how I like it before I can start working and I dont have this time.
I wonder if its a hardware problem but it passes the tooltech diagnostics fine
I have a screen grab if that helps
    Any ideas?

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • 890FXA-GD70 Will Not Wake From S3 Sleep

890FXA-GD70 will not wake from S3 sleep; the power comes back on and the fans run but the video never returns and the system hard locks with a POST code of 22 or 24. Other than this issue the system is rock solid.
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor
    Sapphire 5870 Graphics
    Crucial M4 SSD
    Corsair DDR3
    No overclock
I have reproduced the issue on two 890FXA-GD70s motherboards and I am convinced that this is not a result of a failed motherboard. I also was able to move my fully installed SSD hard drive, processor, memory and graphics card to an Asus 890FX board and successfully wake from S3 sleep proving that my OS and driver installation are working correctly.
I know how to properly set the BIOS as I have installed many 890GXM-G65 motherboards for S3 sleep without issue. The problem seems unique to the 890FXA-GD70.
Is there a fix for this?

I have identified the cause. The "Extra RAID/IDE Controller" must be "Enabled" to use S3; otherwise the system will hang on the wake event. This is true even if the "Extra RAID/IDE Controller" goes unused. The "Extra RAID/IDE Controller" must be set to "Enabled" for S3 sleep to wake.
This would seem to me to be a bug since none of the other MSI boards I have used require the optional IDE controller to be enabled in order for S3 to function properly.

  • Macboor air 13 late 2010 freezes when wake from deep sleep

Hi. I have had this problem for a few months and still havent found a solution. This macbook air freezes and is totally unresponsive for five or six seconds when it wakes from deep sleep. I have tried:
1 Apple hardware test, which came up negative. No hardware problem detected
2 reset the SMC several times. No fix.
3 repaired permissions in disk utility, and also verified and repaired disk. Still no results.
    4 restarted many times.
5 tried booting in safe mode, but it made the machine hang.
The only thing I havent tried yet is resetting the PRAM. in the event that that doesnt work, does anyone have any ideas. I only found thre

I think it might just depend on how often your machine does this. My MBA 13 has done what you are describing one or twice, but its a rare event. I'm not too worried about it, but you might want to contact AppleCare and see if they have any more information...

have recently upgraded and am finding my iMac won't wake from a sleep state 80% of the time. What do I need to change or do to prevent this?

    Hi 02SilverSport,
Try using the power button to wake the iMac.

  • Waking up display from display sleep

This is a minor thing, but I'm curious. On my MBP, I have my display set to sleep after 15 minutes of non-use. The MBP itself never sleeps.
Before upgrading to Lion I could wake up the display by touch the trackpad, or moving the magic mouse.
After upgrade, the only way I can wake the display seems to be by pressing the spacebar.
Is there a way to have the display wake up in response to trackpad/mouse touching like before?
    Thanks,
    doug

Sorry, igmackenzie, but the OS X documentation (for all previous versions, not updated yet for Lion) says otherwise:
Display sleep: When display sleep occurs, the display will go black, but running applications remain active. If your display has a power indicator, it may change to indicate that the display is in a low-power mode. To wake the display, simply move the mouse, touch the trackpad, or press a key on the keyboard.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
You seem to be suggesting that Apple has proof that all cats know they must avoid running over keyboards and instead only run over mice or trackpads
I can confirm for a fact that no-one explained this to my sister's cat, as I recently spent the better part of an hour helping her to undo her cat's keyboard-dancing fun.
I remain of the firm belief that this is a bug that needs fixing. The swipe of a trackpad to awaken from sleep is a very much more intuitive and easy way to go about things - you swipe to the hot corner to sleep it, you swipe it again to awaken it. Simples.

  • Macbook Pro random restart during wake from Safe Sleep

When my Macbook Pro is waking up from Safe Sleep, sometimes it spontaneously restarts halfway through the process. The Safe Sleep progress bar gets half way, then you hear the startup chime, and then the login screen appears. Obviously, all my unsaved but supposedly 'safe' work is lost at that point.

    Hello there DaveWoo,
It sounds like your computer is occasionally restarting on its own when you wake it from sleep. There can be a number of reasons for this to happen, and I recommend you use the following article to help you resolve or isolate the issue. Its pretty thorough and has a lot of information.
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

  • 22" ACD won't wake from system sleep

Someone gave me their old G4 Dual 450, with the stock ATI Rage Pro 128 video card. I took a 22" Apple Cinema Display (ACD22, we'll call it) which worked perfectly with a G5 1.6 and hooked it up to the G4--using the handy, all-in-one ADC connector. The display looks great and works perfectly with the G4, except for one thing: If you do *manually invoked* sleep on the G4, the ACD22 won't wake up.
If you let the display go to sleep via its own timer (set in Energy Saver), it will wake via mouse/kb input. (Keyboard is plugged into the ACD22, mouse it plugged into the keyboard.) But it will NOT wake up if you manually invoke sleep via the apple/sleep menu command OR the power button on the G4 OR the power button on the ACD22. The power light on the ACD22's power button pulses evenly and softly ONLY when system sleep is manually invoked. There is no waking When automatic display sleep kicks in, making the screen dark, the steady power light on the display remains steady.
What I've done so far: reset PRAM, reset CUDA (power management) button, pulled video card and dusted/cleaned contacts before reseating.
There's probably nothing wrong with the ACD--It wakes up fine from manually invoked sleep when connected to the G5. Why won't it respond to the G4 from manually invoked sleep?

Sorry for my lack of clarity. I'm not sure how my wording got so jumbled. The display wakes from automatically invoked sleep (as set in Energy Saver), but will not wake from manually invoked sleep. One other possible clue is that when I invoke sleep manually, the ACD's activity LED does its soft "sleep" pulsing--When automatic sleep kicks in, there is no pulsing. The light just glows steadily as it does when the display is awake and being used normally.
I have started up in safe mode with only an Apple keyboard and Apple mouse plugged into the ACD itself. Nothing changes--it still won't wake up from manually induced sleep. The only other PCI card that I can see is one with 3 USB ports and one FireWire port. I assumed it came with this computer when the person who gave it to me bought it. Maybe not.

  • Eclipse SLI wont wake from S3 sleep in Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit

I have just upgraded my OS to Windows 7 64 bit. I am setting the PC up so that I can work on it over the internet using Remote Desktop. I want to be able to turn the PC on over the internet on request so that I don't need to leave it switched on all the time. I also want to the PC to go to sleep when it isn't being used to save power and extend the lifetime of the mother board.
So far, I can successfully wake the PC up remotely from an S1 and S5 state no problem. However, the PC doesn't successfully wake up from an S3 hybrid sleep state. When I send the magic packet or move the mouse, the machine tries to wake up, the fans start and the lights come on but there is no hard disk activity and the monitor remains blank. At this point the only thing I can do is press and hold the power button to shut the PC down. When I power up the PC for the first time afterwards, it starts for about 2 seconds then turns its self off, then it come back on about 5 seconds later and recovers my previous windows session as if the machine had just woken up from a sleep.
Any help will be gratefully received.
    Mike H

I have more information. I read a post here that claimed wake up from S3 stops working if you over clock BCLK past 170.  I reset my bios to safe settings and set up hybrid S3 sleep and it worked !!!
Next step was to start to apply my over clock one step at a time and find which bit was messing up S3 wake up. It does seem to be the BCLK. With memory clock multiplier set very low so that memory wasn't the problem, I adjusted BCLK upwards until S3 wakeup stopped working. I haven't finished testing yet but it is somewhere between 165 and 170. As long as BCLK is at 165, wake up from S3 works fine. The other post can be red here:-
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=136780.0
If this is the problem, it's very disappointing because my system runs stable at BCLK 195 with the multiplier at 21.

  • Msi 760ga-p43 crashes on wake from S3 sleep

    Hello,
I have the msi 760GA-P43 motherboard with Windows 8.1 installed on a 250gb Samsung 840 Evo SSD, and I'm unable to get the computer to wake up from sleep in S3 mode without Windows crashing a few seconds after wakeup. I also can't wake up from keyboard or USB mouse (can only wake from power button). When it does wake up and crash, the system restarts itself and then returns to Windows as if waking from hibernated state - i.e. all programs still running.
Sleep works in S1 mode, but in S1 mode the fans don't stop so this seems kind of pointless. I have played around with various power settings within Windows but nothing makes a difference. Tried setting 'boot from PS/2' and 'boot from USB device' to Enabled in BIOS, no success.
I have a Phenom II X6 1055T CPU @125W, 8gb of 1333MHz RAM. Any advice very welcome, thanks in advance.

    A couple more details:
I have hybrid sleep disabled in Windows.
I get the same result whether the Wakeup Event (in BIOS) is set to BIOS or OS.
BIOS is updated to most recent, ver 1.2

  • Mac Pro won't wake from prolonged sleep in Mountain Lion

My Mac Pro won't wake from sleep after it is in sleep mode for several hours at a time.  It will wake if the sleep period is short.  But if it sleeps overnight it will not wake the next morning.  Nothing seems to work.  It requires a hard restart.  I am running OS X 10.8.2.  I read in another site that this problem was fixed for Macbook Air and Macbook Pro by turning off hibernate mode in Terminal.  But I doubt this would help with my Mac Pro.
    Any thoughts or ideas?
    Thanks.
