Media Manager - Prores to DV-Pal(offline) back to online?

Hi,
I'm using FCP 7. Have 5 streams of XDcam 1920 x1080 converted to prores for editing.
My system can't handle multicam editing these five HD streams so I converted my footage to prores.
With all of my prores seq synced I used Media Manager to Recompress into DV-Pal for multicam editing.
Now I am finished my edit and want to make an online version (back to original Prores)
Do I now use media Manager to Recompress again to prores or is there a way of just relinking back to my original prores which already exists on my system??
Thanks

If you done this properly all you need to do is use media manager to make an offline version at the original format and relink to the original files.  At least that's the way I've worked without any problems.  But my projects did not involve multicam, so it's possible it mighrt be a good idea to collapse your multiclips before doing the media manage.  But you should always TEST your workflow before diving in at the deep end of the pool.

  • Using Media Manager to 'Make Offline' it re-names media files to 'Private'

For some reason Media Manager is changing the name of media files when processing them making it impossible to reconnect them.
My director always has a complete copy of our film's media files on his 'home set-up' (FCP 5.0 on a Powerbook with 2 x 500gb firewire drives) so he can look at our cuts at home. This has caused problems in the past with firewire drives expiring or failing to mount: making the whole process pointless. Also, as the amount of footage increased, he struggled to find space for the 6-8 drives required.
My solution was to down-convert our DV resolution media files to Photo-Jpeg resolution which allowed me to fit 3TB of footage onto 2 brand new G-Tech drives. Every time I sent him a cut to view all I had to do was use media manager to make the sequence offline and convert it to exactly the same Photo-Jpeg setting I used to export the files. All he has to do is reconnect the sequence to his drives at his end.
A wonderful plan except when you came to reconnecting. I found that 95% of clips connect perfectly and then you get asked for the location of some media files called 'Trashes' 'Applications' or more commonly, 'Private'. Obviously no such files existed - I use an impeccably organised and structured filename system when capturing. Therefore it made random clips in my sequence impossible to reconnect once it had been converted to the settings used by the director.
When this only happened once or twice I thought I could easily just work out what files it was actually looking for by the clip names on the timeline and tell FCP to reconnect to the correct file by ignoring the file name but this is so time consuming and impractical when you have 20/30 clips that have been renamed on a sequence. It is also not the sort of thing my director is technically capable/willing to do.
It also seems to be happening when you convert things in the other direction. When I took a sequence from the director's project and brought it back onto my system by converting his sequence to my DV-PAL settings we got the same problems with 'Private and 'Applications' clips. And we know for sure that all of these clips were online on his computer.
Has anyone seen this before or know any steps I could take to prevent it happening.
I fear that if I can't get this method to work I will have to give him full resolution media to work with and I will be fated to spend the rest of my days replacing. smashing or swearing at firewire drives that only work when they feel like it.
    Anybody got any ideas.
    Cheers

haven't tried this but it may be worth some investigation.
try exporting an XML of your sequence and passing that to the director
on the director's FCP setup, import the xml, and in the Import XML... window uncheck the "Override with setting from XML" checkbox, and choose the approriate offline res that matches the directors media.
see if the resulting sequence will reconnect

  • ProRes 422 MOV files offline in Adobe Media Encoder 2014 (but online in Premiere)

The question is NOT about exporting PreRes files from a Windows PC, which is what I keep finding in my searches.
My client gave me ProRes 422 MOV files. I imported them into Premiere Pro CC 2014. I could see and edit them fine. But when I export them via Adobe Media Encoder, they appear to be offline. BTW, other media sources exported fine, such as the PNGs and JPGs I cut to. (I don't think it matters, but I'm attempting to make h.462 mp4s, which I do all the time, and have done with ProRes sources before using CC 2014.)
I tried exporting a short video clip (using same ProRes 422 source) from Premiere and it worked fine. Why not Adobe Media Encoder? I need to encode batches of videos with ProRes sources overnight, so exporting from Premiere is not a good option.
I'm on a Win 7 PC and I have QT Pro and iTunes (which I think also installs codecs).

Everything seems to be working fine now, though I don’t know why. I did update my iTunes (which I’d rather not even have installed on my PC because I never use it, but removing it seems to mess things up). I’ll also make sure to keep my QT updated. I thought it was because I upgraded to the paid version a couple months ago hoping to fix a similar problem, but again, it seemed to get fixed when I updated iTunes.
Thanks for getting back to me!

  • Media Manager Back Up Issue

    Hi,
I have nearly finished project: a 30 minute documentary and 4 short variants (DV PAL) that I want to create a full media back up on a 1TB Lacie firewire drive to take off site in case of the worst possible scenario over Christmas and New Year and our offices flood/have a fire (hope I'm not tempting fate here...)
I created a new sequence and edited all four sequences into this one new sequence. I did this, because some of the short films use most of the same media as used in the main film, and I didn't want to duplicate the media unnecessarily by using the MM to copy each sequence separately. I have given the duplicated items 1:00:00 handles.
My first question is, is my strategy the best way of doing this? I don't have room to duplicate all the media, which is sitting on several different drives (70 one hour DV tapes were digitised to create this project). I don't have any other digital media back up at present - only the original tapes - although I back up the .fcp files each day on top of autosaves on different drives.
Whilst the sequence was copying through the MM, a drive became disconnected and FCP locked up. I had to force quit and wonder (assuming the above strategy is OK) whether I have to start the whole process again ditching what I've already copied, even though half the back up MM project is already there on my 1TB drive. I can't think of a way I can export using the media manager from 'where I left off'.
    Any help gratefully received.
    Cheers,
    Ant

I've tried all the available options, including archive and install and then erase and install, however, when I tried to erase got the following message:
'volume erase failed: could not unmount disk'
I have tried unmounting in disk utility to no avail. Does anybody have any suggestions or should I visit the apple store ( I have no protection plan)?
Is the hard drive shot, even though I was able to access it in target mode to drag and drop my user folders on to an external hd?

  • Using Media Manager to Decompose offline clips only (Like Avid)

OK... Here's the scenario. I have a Timeline sequence lasting 10 mins. This timeline has been edited direclty from 20 x 1 hour clips from 20 x 1 hour tapes with timecode. I have stored the media on 2 external FW800 drives but one of the drives has failed leaving me with a timeline with half of the clips missing iy's media. The edit is at a pretty final stage and we need to re-dig the media but want to only re-dig that which is missing.
Using Media manager or any other software element is there a way of batch capturing only the short offline (decomposed) clips from the timeline without re-digising the whole of the 10 hours which is missing from the drives. Also., to make things more complicated, this has to be done automatically i.e. without re-editing the clips from the browser back into the timeline.
I would be most grateful for any help on this matter as this is the only thing that seperates Avid Media Composer from FCP as a proper media manager tool.
    Thanks!!!

  • Cant locate offline clips after deleting unused media using Media Manager

    Hi,
I recently used Media Manager for the first time to clean up an old project of mine, and delete unused media to save some space. Having read and re-read all manuals/help I proceeded with the 'Use Existing' command in the Media Manager...and now a big portion of my files are offline.
There was no option to 'save to a location' but when I go to 'reconnect media' the pathway for these offline files is -
    Macintosh HD:private:var:tmp:folders.501:TemporaryItems
and the clips are labelled with '-2' or '-3' after their name.
Ive used spotlight and searched through my HD and lacie - and I cant find the location above at all! Im getting worried, as i need to go back into the project to make some really minor changes but cant face re-capturing material then eye-matching the shots ive used, it will take days! These clips must be floating around somewhere on the system?
    Please please help! Thank you!!

Thanks Chris - I can go back to my source material although dont know if I can batch capture ok as the source material was captured in an old version of FC Express and had been moved over to my new FCP 4 - dont know if this might cause problems...i hope not!
Regarding the backup of source material - just wondering if theres any other way to make those files smaller - it seems a waste of valuable storage space if Ive captured say an hours worth of footage but only ended up using 20 mins of it in my end sequence (for example). Is there no way to get rid of that extra 40 mins of media that ill never use again?

  • Media Managing to Prores for 5d clips on mixed timeline

Hi, I have a largish project (1TB footage) whitch is mainly SD but I have some 5d & Sony Ex footage.  The majorety of the timeline is SD but there is a little 5D/Ex whitch is native footage and has to render (it is a SD timeline).  Is there a way of converting the 5D/Ex clips I have used in situe (i.e. not having to convert the clip and redo cut).  I know I could just convert the whole timeline into prores but this is a feature doc and would take a long time and use a lot of disk space.  Also I am not ready to media manage for grading/sound edit (it is still a rough cut).
The reason I ask is I know this can be done with Avid if I consolidate.
    Any ideas?
    Ben

Move the clips you want to convert to their own video track.  Duplicate your sequence, delete the SD footage and media manage what's left.  Then replace the original tracks with the Mediamanaged tracks.

  • Media Manager - offline to online issue

Hope someone can help with this issue.
first for reference here is my work flow.
I copy the timeline sent from my client into a new project. from there I media manage the timeline to create an offline so that I can conform the show in hd.
The problem I am having is that on some reels for example there are 10 clips to capture but when I go to capture them fcp tells me that there are 20 clips to capture. This is adding time to my conform.
Has anyone else had this issue? And is there something I'm doing wrong or could do to correct the issue?
    Regards;
    Rocky

You'll need to give more information.
What makes you think there are only 10 clips?
Do you count the cideoclips only? Are there maybe cuts in the audio that you need to take in account?
Did you check the Reelnumbers in the browser columns?: Are there clips of which you think they come from different reels, but in the browser thay accidently have the same reel name?
Is it always 2 times the amount you expected. (You said 10 becomes 20. Is this always doubled, or is it sometimes 10 clips become 18? or 23?)
If the former, then you might have your system settings set to capture Audio and Video to different files, which will double the amount of Captured clips from the masterclips

  • After RT offline, media manager imports DV but timeline imports JPEG qualit

After RT edit I use media manager to re-import seclected full rez footage into a sequence w. DV presets. Afterward when I play the sequence, all the video is a 320x280 jpeg size inside the larger, black 720 frame. Sequence has DV settings but each clips brought into the viewer shows jpeg settings.
Two questions: 1) what am I doing wrong with Media Manager and
    2) can I use "reconnect media" somehow to connect 720 timeline with the 720 video. The which is on hardrive - it was imported during media management operation. Just didn't make it to the timeline. I dont want to reimport a second time. Thank you.
Mac Book Pro 2 gig   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   FCP 5.0 IMport via DVX 100A

Captured in Offline RT initially, finished the sequence then used media manager to reimport the footage used in the sequence. Defined DV settings for the sequence but even though media manager had me insert all my tapes and captured DV quality footage - which I can see on my drive - the new sequence (which has DV full frame settings) plays 320 jpeg sized video.
I had done a test of media manager before I started the project and it worked. So I may be doing something wrong with a setting somewhere. FCP Help is a little light on explaing the steps.
Also, since media manager DID import the DV footage I need, can I connect the DV seqenece to this footge without having to import again. I tried highlighting a few cuts in the sequence and selecting "reconnect media" but that just reconnected me to the JPEG material.
    Thanks.

  • Media Manage 10-Bit to DV

I've just captured DigiBeta material via SDI to Uncompressed 10-Bit and storing on a 1 Ter G-Raid on FW800.
To do my editing a little speadier I thought to use Media Manager and copy the files, but recompressing them as DV media... editing from those and then reconnecting to the uncompressed files for final rendering.
300 Gig and 3 hrs later the files were transfered but when I dragged them into a DV timeline each one was flickery when viewed on my PAL monitor. Looked fine on the Cinema Display though.
The timeline is OK as I've got other DV material successfully on it and I've checked the settings on the browser to see if there are any differences between the media managed DV files and other DV files that I have just digitised in. All seems idendical.
At first I thought it was a field dominance thing so tried changing the settings for the errant files in the browser but that gave no joy.
I have made the pictures look smooth by de-interlacing with a Nattress G Fast De-Interlacer, (media field order - lower, select field - first,) but then of course everything needs rendering and that will be a pain for subsequent editing.
I'd even thought of rendering the whole of each file and reconnecting to each render file instead of the DV file. Then editing in the normal way and afterwards reconnecting again but to the uncompressed 10-Bit files.
Is this file recompression problem a "quirk" on media manager?
Is there a better way to do this... keeping TC information intact and hopefully being able to copy multiple files at a time?
Can I get rid of the flicker on the errant DV files a different way without using a filter that will incur a red render bar?
As an aside, my system is always rock solid and never crashes - but I've only edited with a DV timeline to date. My system has quit a couple of times over the last 2 days on this 10-Bit project and I'm wondering if its because I'm pushing the limits by using a FW800 G-Raid for media storage. (Project files saved to an internal extra drive and auto save files to the system drive.)
I've trashed / repaired and copied my system back from a cloned back-up, (and then repaired and run through Onyx,) so I'm sure that my Mac is healthy.
Oodles of thanks in advance for encouraging words of wisdom.
    LEE.

Not sure what caused your problem, as I've done the same with 8 bit to DV with MM and it worked fine... so?
To really have a smooth offline/online experience though, down convert the 10 bit to offline RT... or another photo JPEG compression... it can look as good as DV and be smaller file size wise at the same time. I recall a 75% Compression quality setting looked really good, and the files ranged in size of course, but came out to about 30% smaller than had they been DV files, and looked better actually. (also maintained 4:2:2 color space that way)
OfflineRT is a 35?% or so photo JPEG compression, and would be 1/8th the size of a DV file of the same footage.

  • Bullseye Media Manager

    Hello,
I just finished a working version of a media manager I use for my personal account to handle my music and pictures collection. I decided to published it on AUR as I assume it might interest some people.
It's a python app with several modules.
Here's a little sum up of what it is about :
    Music module
    - Inspired by Amarok 1.4 and Exaile
    - Library browser show rating sum, playcount sum and burn factor by node (artist, album, track, etc...). Burn factor is high if you've listened a lot to a few tracks of a node.
    - Advanced queue managment with several flags to apply on queued tracks :
Stop flag : Once the player is done playing this track it will stop global playback
Temp jump : Once the player is done playing the current track, it will play this track and then go back where it left
Perm jump : Once the player is done playing the current track, it will play this track and then continue playback from here
Bridge source : Once the player is done playing this track, it will move to the bridge dest of this bridge source (if there is one)
Bride dest : Tells that this track is where the matching bridge source will lead when listened
    - Passive filters : hide tracks you do not want to see by showing only those matching filters, useful if you have a large collection and at some point just listen to a few tracks. Can be seen as content view modes.
    - Session saving/loading
    - Last.fm scrobbling with offline cache support
    - Function to sync playcounts with Last.fm account
    - Function to import ratings from another Bullseye database (including BullseyeDroid)
Other modules (pictures, videos, and later custom)
    - Manages files based on what there are and not just where they are on the disk
Basically, what you have to do with these modules is creating categories (~ based on subject form) and universes (~ based on subject content). Then after Bullseye has scanned indexed folders for new files, you load some of these files and drag and drop them in the matching categories / universes. You can create an arborescence of categories and universes. For example, I can create the root category "Characters" and a sub-category "Warriors" to it. I can also create a root universe "Dragon Ball" and a sub-universe "Piccolo" to it. Then if I have a picture of the warrior character Piccolo from Dragon Ball, I'll load it and drag and drop it in "Warriors" and "Piccolo". This picture will then matches the criteria "Characters", "Warriors", "Dragon Ball" and "Piccolo".
    - Can move every indexed files to a proper structure. If you just download and copy files, search for them in Bullseye then add them in the proper category and universe, it will work. But it will be a real mess on disk. Bullseye can move every indexed files to a proper structure on disk, based on categories, universes or both.
    - Function to check for doubloons
    - Video & Music module support multiple backends : GStreamer, VLC, Phonon and MPlayer (not there right now)
Music module browser and flags demo : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF5114mLWhQ
Categories & Universes management introduction with pictures module : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3i1plNSpsg
    Gtk2 package : https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=58903
    Qt4 package : https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=58905
Theses versions are not really polished but should work quite properly (but they probably contain bugs since no one has used them except me).
    Thanks for any feedback.

Qt Version was broken, and wasn't loading the database (thus no music was showing).
My vim setup trims extra whitespace from files, so I created a diff that ignores white space to allow a cleaner application of the patch:

As a side note, there seems to be a lot of differences between the gtk and qt versions. Aside from potentially not having qt installed, is there a reason to maintain two versions? Alternatively, i wonder if it would make since to separate the project into a library and the gui's which implement the library (kind of like xmms and mpd do)? • Media Manager grabs full capture files

    Hi All,
I'm attempting to archive a finished project comprised of ProRes clips. Typically, I've done this by using Media Manager to copy just the clips used in my timeline, and then backing that data up. However, for some unexplained reason, when I select my timeline in the Browser window and open up Media Manager, there's virtually no difference between the "Original" bar and the "Modified" bar, regardless of whether I check "Delete unused media" or "Include master clips outside the selection". It seems to be trying to include ALL of my source media in this managed version, which is befuddling.
    Any suggestions??
    josh

    Awesome, that would be great.
It's the strangest thing. I have a 3-hour long program feed in DVCPRO HD 1080i60 that was used for b-roll on a project (not the best source, I suppose, but it's all we had), and when I try to media manage it copies the entire master clip, even though that option isn't selected. I'm copying only the footage used, like you mentioned, with 2 second handles, but it still copies the master clip.
I've tried making the clips independent and subclips, I've trashed my preferences, I've copied the sequence into a new project and even brought the original footage into a new project as well, but Media Manager always brings along the master clip.
Does it just not work with files that big?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    jesse.

  • Media Manager mistake - Can it be fixed?

Hi, we have tried to back up a FCP project on Media Manager but accidentally 'moved' the files instead of 'copying' them.
Now when we try to retrieve the project, about half the files are offline and we can't reconnect them. The project still plays fine in the timeline but we can't seem to reconnect them. We have been able to reconnect media previously but as MM renamed everything when we 'moved' the files, we can't seem to reconnect now.
    Any ideas?
As always, really appreciate anyone's help!
    Thanks

Do you remember if you did create a new project (That's an option in the MM window). Or did you not?
If you did not, then the next question comes up?
Did you check the 'delete Unused Media' checkbox?
If you did not, then you can simply reconnect (one by one, because the names changed) to the oved media.
But if you did check the 'delete Unused Media' checkbox, then it will be hard to reconnect the media.
If so, Backup the project and do either one of two things:
    A. Re-ingest the 'lost' footage
    or
    B. Make the missing clips in the timeline 'independent clips' (menu: Modify > Make Independent Clip')
Reconnect those to the moved files. One by one. On the error message choose 'Continue'.
Editing those clips will be limited since you deleted the unused media (=Everything that was not in the timeline).
I thing option A is the best option to prevent more problems down the road.

  • Backup - Media Manager - FireStore

Any suggestions for a good Backup procedure?
I tried working with Media Manager BUT I have a problem namely:
I work on quicktime files generated from a FireStore (I don't capture from tapes). So those files don't have Reel Names. So when I use in the Media Manager "delete unused parts of the clip" ... it actually doesn't. In the manual, it's written that for clips that don't have real names or source timecode - FCP DOES NOT delete the unused parts of the media files.
I actually use parts of media files using IN & Out points and I NEED to backup the whole clips because Media Manager does not help me in that. Any clue????

In the media manager, I'm doing a "copy" and have
"delete unused media from duplicated items" selected.
Since this is a copy, my original source medial will
be untouched, right? Very clearly stated, nothing is
    deleted?
Yes, that's right. Make sure it's a copy, and preferably make it to a different drive (why coming up).
Also, I have titles and effect shots linked via
motion projects in the sequence. How are these
    handled...
MM will also copy Motion, Soundtrack Pro, LiveType project files as well as still images, PhotoShop documents, and who knows what else.
...and how can I make sure if all my original
data is lost, that this backup will have all my media
    used in the motion segments?
You want to check the new project thoroughly to make sure it's all there. This means at least stepping through, playing segments to make sure the right stuff is there. Really it should include rendering it out and playing back the whole thing to make sure there are no glitches.
This is where copying it to a different drive can come in. If you do that, then you can take the original drive offline to make positively sure the new project isn't reading anything from there. Another option is to rename any folders that are relevant to the first project, so that if they're referenced in the MM project they won't be found. Red flag. Be especially careful about images and Motion etc. projects, which may be scattered depending how you work.

  • Media manager adding frames

i'm trying to export 4 layers of video (rough composite layer, blue screen layer, matte layer and background layer) with media manager. i need to send these shots to compositors to make the final composites. i'm using media manager because it seems like the easiest way to give them what they need as separate files. i want to create new quicktimes of the shots in my sequence at exactly the same length as they appear in my edit (no handles).
when i try to export with media manager, the sequence that it creates is the same as my sequence but the quicktime clips that it creates are not. media manager has somehow added 4 frames to the head of the clip on layer 1 and 9 frames to the head of layer 2. i need for the compositors to be able to line up the layers by just lining up the heads of the shots.
    my media manager settings are:
-"copy media referenced by duplicated items"
-"include master clips outside selection" is NOT checked on
-"delete unused media from duplicated items" IS checked ON
-"use handles" is NOT checked on
-"include affiliate clips outside selection" is NOT checked on
-"base media file names on existing file names"
-"duplicate selected items and place into a new project" IS checked ON
-"include nonactive multiclip angles" IS checked ON
footage and sequence are: AJA Kona LHi: 1080psf 23.98 Apple ProRes 422
any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hi Brian,
    Thanks for replying.
I am working on an animation edit. The clients send us a master QT with audio. I export the audio for animation lipsync, the animators then send me QTs with the audio I have exported embedded within them. The clients have the original audio and have requested that the QTs we send back contain just picture.
The delivery specs state I need to send a project and media to the client.
There are no audio clips in my timeline apart from the QT sent by the clients. In my edit I add our animations above the client QT and send the sequence. Before, when I was using QTs with audio I was not cutting the audio into the sequence just using the audio from the master QT the clients sent. My new QTs (with no audio) are being dropped onto the timeline on a higher video track but when I export them they add '-v' at the end which does not fit into the clients naming convention.
I hope that made sense, any help is greatly appreciated.
    Tom.
