Midi latency in huge template

Hi.
I have an template that  I'm using for a score project.
It has a lot of tracks, both internal Logic sounds an AU, where everything together is using a lot of CPU.
When i start a new session using the template, all is fine, but father some time, as new tracks are added there is suddenly some latency in the midi, without any warning. It doesn't  have to be many tracks playing at the same time even.
Does anybody have any idea what is causing this?
G

Hi Paul,
What CoastalMaineBird has suggested is a possible reason for such latency in your readings. Polling the open and close operations by having open close functions inside the borders of a while loop would create overhead. The normal process model for reading would be
Open > read > close
If you had this code all be inside the while loop it may turn out to be slow and create latency. Alternatively if you were to just open then poll the read operation only i.e. have the open and close on the outside of the while loop it would be more efficient.
There are other ways you can programmatically create such overheads. In most cases there are good programming styles / practices you can adopt to easily avoid running into such issues. It would be helpful for us to inspect how you are programmatically performing the acquisition hence helpful if you could attach your VI for us to inspect the code.
Such programmatic style guidelines and good practices are discussed in our very well rated LabVIEW courses.
Kind Regards,

  • Adjustint Midi latency

I know this has been asked a million times but despite RTFM and looking through the discussions I still can't make head nor tail of this:
I'm running LP8 via a 003 Rack, I've just gotten back into improvising on the piano and thought I was going mad when all my riffs sounded late (I was convinced I was really out of practice!) To do a comparison, I played some stuff live using my piano (NI's Akoustik Piano and also one of the EXS24 ones) then super-imposed my stage piano's (which I use as a midi keyboard) internal piano patch over the top by wearing ipod earphones and my studio headphones together and was surprised to hear (but relieved I'm not that out of practice!) a massive amount of latency in my Logic/NI pianos. I can't give an accurate time as I can measure it but it feels around about a 1/2 second...
Now the manual talks about PDC but from what I read this regarding plugin delay, rather than Midi delay? I've tweaked some settings around, such as reducing the buffer from 1024 to 256 samples, but still I have this Midi latency.
My piano (Roland RD 700SX) has two modes of Midi transmission: MIDI and USB, both have the same amount of latency when playing back a Logic-based piano.
Is there anything else I can try, as I can't really improvise with this level of latency! Any questions please ask....
    Cheers,
    Ben

  • Terrible midi latency XP via Bootcamp

    Hi eveybody,
Don't know if someone could help but this issue is driving me nut
I'm running XP on my Imac via bootcamp and I'm using a Motu 828 MkII Firewire audio interface to produce music in Ableton Live.
Problem is that I've have a terrible midi latency when trying to use my midi keyboard (that is directly connected to the Motu soundcard). Don't have the same problem when I use this configuration on OSX Leopard but I need to use Windows plugins for some collaboration works... I've already tried to update the soundcard driver but problem stills there!
Is there someone who have experimented the same issue?
    I need help!
    Thanks a lot.

but would the assistant be inlcuded in the 2.1 update....?
shall i download anything from apple website...?
or just use what came with my macbook??
I don't really know. I did this 2 years ago - DL'd bootcamp beta, followed the instructions and in about an hour was loading apps. I can't believe it's any harder now. All it does is set up a separate partition so that you can dual boot windows.
im not using the latest leopard version...im on the one but last....
music software always has issues with updates...
Don't see why that would matter.
if i choose to make a 30gb partition, i cant make it bigger later? probably not but 30 should be plenty.
    NTFS or fat?
XP likes ntfs but mac can only read nfts, not write to it. I keep all my data on external drives split between fat32 and osx. That way I can easily move files back and forth. Frankly I wouldn't bother otherwise. Since my projects are usually around 35 audio tracks throughput is never an issue.
would macbook be able to access data files on windows partition?
    Only Fat 32.
would windows xp be able to access files on the mac side?
Windows cannot read a mac partition, in fact, the mac partition won't even show up in XP.
sorry sorry sorry.... this is all rather complicated....just reading the pdf manual for bootcamp......
It's not that bad, just be patient and take it one step at a time
    cheers!

  • Midi Latency with G4 1.25 Mhz, 2 GB Ram, GB 9, Leopard

Recently upgraded to Leopard/Ilife 09... I'm getting intolerably midi latency with an external midi controller, motu 828 firewire midi/digital audio interface, recording a GB software instrument. This system worked cherry with 04/Tiger. Is the new GB/Leopard so heavy with all the Intel support that it cannot even run on my good old G4 PowerPC?
We're talking single track, no other apps, internal drive... should I not expect this HW to have enough cycles for this? Apple advertises complete GB 09 ( other than "lessons" ) support for this system. Seems like something is very wrong...

garage band simply will not run properly on this hardware w/ leopard.

  • Audio MIDI latency problem (from iOS 7.0.6 till current version)

This problem started since i updated my iPhone 5 16GB and iPad Air 32GB Wi-Fi from iOS 7.0.4 to 7.0.6 (iOS 7.1 still have this problem):
i'm a DJ and using my iPhone and iPad as mobile but powerfull dj setup (with installed DJ Player ios app (http://djplayerapp.com)) and connected Vestax VCI-400 dj controller (with separate power adapter and powered hi-speed usb cable) via original Camera Connection Kit.
MIDI touch responce was perfect until upgrading to iOS 7.0.6. After that i got audio latency issues.
For example: i press to any button or moving crossfader and jog wheels for scratching on dj controller but sound starts just after a few seconds. DJ controller works fine (with usual aftertouch audio responce) with other music apps instead this one.
By the way: Connected AKAI MPK25 midi keyboard responce is OK in DJ Player and in other apps too (with separate power adapter and connected CCK via USB hub) without any problems after iOS updating on both Apple devices.
Main topic was started a month ago on the forum of DJ Player app developer: https://getsatisfaction.com/djplayer/topics/sound_delays_when_playing_from_vesta x_vci_400
    Anyone have the same problems?

    PROBLEM SOLVED!!! thanks for attention.

  • MIDI Latency

I recently purchased an M-Audio 4x4 Midisport Interface. This solved a problem I was having in terms of MIDI output with a MOTU interface. But depending on the sequence of events, such as putting my iMac to sleep then waking it later or turning my MIDI keyboard on before starting Logic Express 9, the port my keyboard is connected to goes a bit whacky. Play a note, hear it a second to five seconds later. If I move my midi input cable to a different input port everything is okay but the affected port will not be reset until I disconnect the USB cable and reconnect or perform a cold boot. Disconnect and reconnecting the USB cable is easy enough but I was wondering if anyone else discovered a similar issue and if so a more permanent solution. Once the interface is reset, everything is okay. There are other situations that cause the latency but generally it occurs as a result of keyboard (musical keyboard that is) activity when Logic is not running. When the M-Audio is reset and Logic is running, I typically have no problem during my sessions.
I am running OS X (10.6.3) on an iMac with 4GB memory, dual core Intel processor. My MIDI controller is a Yamaha P-80 Electronic Piano connected to the MIDI sport 4x4.

Do you have any mastering plugins on your final outputs 1 & 2? If so, you might want to bypass these for now as they effect latency of the "realtime" audio path. It's important to only use them for mixing and not recording.

  • Help with midi latency issue?

I'm using a midiman 4x4 with Logic Pro 7.1. and just recently on play back of a midi part to my Nord Lead 3 there is really bad latency between the audio in Logic and the midi.
When i'm actually playing midi there is no issue whatsoever, just during playback after i've recorded a part.
I'm using an M-Box by the way..
This problem has only arisen in the last few days and i've updated the drivers for my midi interface but this has made no difference.
    Any ideas???

  • Midi latency problems during record/playback

I am starting to use Garageband for midi recording--I am going through an M-Audio Audiophile interface by firewire--when I preview the software instruments everything is fine but when I record then the recorded notes are dropping out or delayed during record and playback--how can I solve thhis problem?
I have already followed the Garageband help suggestions for settings
    I would welcome any help!

Do they have the same interface as you? I get very little latency on my iBook G4 and I am using usb 2.
Before getting my external drive I had been recording successfully on my iBook's hardrive. Besides eating up hardrive space I had no problems. Much of what I do uses GB's excellent software instruments and MIDI.
Software instruments are strenuous on the cpu and ram. What is your ram situation?
I also lock tracks as I go along, especially with software instruments. Avoid using effects during the recording stage, add the effects afterwards.

  • Disappearing midi latency during recording

Haven't see a discussion on this yet, any ideas?????
When I go to record a midi performance, there is a delay of about 175 milliseconds, that after about 10 seconds disappears and allows the performance to properly align with the rest of the track. There is no audible delay when I am performing, only when I go to play the track back, and as I am watching the piano roll record in real time.
I have tried resetting the logic preferences, and changing my midi keyboard. The midi keyboard is plugged directly into the MacPro. I'm troubleshooting in a new logic file with no extra plugins using the default EVP88. I'm using Logic 9.1.3.
    Much Obliged

Update: It has something to do with my audio interface. I tried unplugging it and the problem stopped. I'm using the Audio Kontrol 1 from Native Instruments. Reinstalling the drivers for that now...

  • MIDI files - opening vs importing and using templates

I think I'm out of luck on this one, but I thought I'd put it out there anyway. I spent all morning building a new template with 50+ buses for internal recording of audio (Thank You APPLE!).
I would like to be able to open MIDI files using that template. If I import, only the regions are imported not the tempo map, markers etc. If I open, then I can't have it use my template because it opens in an empty file.
I've gone into the global preferences and assigned my template as the default template and still no love. Any thoughts?

I can import the environment but all of the routing is gone. I've got like 50 buses or something and all of my tracks in the arrange are gone as well. No way to import those I imagine. It'll take me only like 10-15 mins to load them all up again, but still thats 1-150 mins each time. Thats why I built a template to begin with, to avoid routing stuff and inserting tracks over and over.
We need an update on this one stat

  • I feel 8.02 is less responsive and has higher latency!

After installing 8.02 and 10.5.3, Logic feels less snappy, has higher latency and has graphical glicthes when a big project is loaded.
Also, when recording in loop mode and when the playback cursor goes back to the beginning of the loop, the recorded notes are all messed up (like Ableton Live)
Also, when dragging a selection in the arranger, the (dragged) selection jumps all the way up or down? (bug?)
8.02 has various other tiny glitches.
Also, the Sculpture synth uses way more CPU since the update!
Good thing: projects load up extremely fast
I have no problems with the Overload Message but then again, I never saw them, ever in 8.0 or 8.01
I did a repair permission before and after each update (update OSX, Logic and Apogee Duet) and flashed the PRAM after all the updates.
I do not use third party plugins.
What am I doing wrong? Because I read all good things about the new Apple updates. However, I am not experiencing them, except for the faster loading times

I have the same latency problem since updating, and only in Logic (not Cubase). I reduced the midi latency when I uncheck, "Universal Track Mode," which is supposed to remain checked, in Audio pref., and turning off any sends on that track while recording.
Now there's a whole new problem of rerouting outputs to high number Double busses (bus 29-30) that never existed before when I reopen a project or start a new one from a template.

  • Latency, Recording incoming Audio into Logic,... I don't understand

I'm trying to clear up my understanding (or misunderstanding) of latency of incoming audio into Logic.
    As a test, here's what I did.
    Set-Up
    1. In Preferences/Audio/General, I set Plug-In delay Compensation to off.
    2. In Preferences/Audio/Core I set the I/O Buffer Size to 32 (is this necessary?, to go that low?)
    3. In Preferences/Audio/General I turn on the Low Latency Mode On, set Limit to 0ms (Zero Milliseconds)
    4. Created a 1/4 note click track with Klopfgeist.
    5. Just for reference, I converted to audio. Opened in the sample editor and it is indeed, exactly on the beat.
    6. Set up my Roland Fantom as a Midi instrument. Channel 10 to trigger a Side Stick sound.
    7. Create another 1/4 note click track.
    8. Recorded the Rolands Output into my MOTU 2408 interface into Logic.
9 Opened up the waveform up in the sample editor, zoom in and notice it is obviously late.
    10. Move the Anchor point 6 ticks to line it up,
Therefore, the incoming audio is off by 6 ticks.
Is it not possible to get 0 latency? I read the chapter in the manual but I believe this wasn't made clear, i could be wrong.
I have a guitarist coming over to record on my record in a week, I don't know how to deal with this except to move his entire track
    by 6 ticks. ?

That is not really the type of latency that's affected by your audio I/O buffer setting. A DAW system has different types of latency, MIDI latency, latency caused by some plugins, AD/DA converter latency..etc. The six tics will probably remain the same or close to it if you're buffer is set to 64, 126, 256...etc.
Why do you have "Low Latency" mode selected, do you know what it's function is?
The I/O buffer setting affects two main aspects.
The response of the system when you play a virtual instrument, and...
...real-time monitoring of an audio input track. (this is an audio signal that passes through Logics audio engine and can use live effects)
The example using the Fantom requires MIDI sent to the keyboard and the audio into the MOTU passes through the AD converter.
What you want to set is the Record Delay so that your audio records in time, however... it needs to be set using a loopback test.
Use a 1/4 note recorded audio click (side stick) that you've adjusted to be perfectly on the beat copy it a few times. Use a cable from the MOTU's output to an open channel's input, record the click, compare.. now adjust the "Recording Delay" until the recorded click matches the first click.
Recording delay is on the Preferences/Audio tab.

  • Speaker problem in Windows (Macbook Pro 15" mid-2012)

I've got a problem with my speakers on my Mac which I can't find any solution or logical explanation for why it is happening.
When I'm in Windows 8 (installed through BootCamp), the speakers only play the higher frequencies, like 1000Hz and above. There is no sign of freqs below that. When I'm in OSX, the problem does no occur, so it is not a loose cable inside the Mac.
I know the Mac has a speaker which plays lower freqs, so I think it must be disabled by Windows. When I'm using FL Studio (I produce music), I use Asio4all to lower the MIDI latency. When Asio4all is enabled, I can choose two audio-outputs: HD Audio 1 and HD Audio 3. Nr. 1 plays only the high freqs, and Nr. 3 plays lower freqs. Is it a driver problem, and is it a fix for it? I've tried to update the BootCamp sounddrivers and Realtek drivers after reading some guides, but with no luck.

Heh, I actually solved the problem Here's how to do it:
    1. Right click on the volume-button in the tray and click on "playback-devices".
    2. Click on "Speakers, and then "Configure" in the bottom left corner.
    3. Now, you can choose either Quadraphonic or Surround if you get that option.
    4. Your sound will now be as great as in OSX!
If you choose stereo, you will get the thin sound because the Mac has three/four individual speakers which is coded in OSX to work together. In Windows, they're not. Therefore, you must manually select Windows to send sound to all the speakers!
With ASIO, there isn't a fix as I have understood. This is because ASIO detects two and two speakers, and thinks they are different. The only fix would be if the ASIO4ALL-coders would create a function where you can "combine" the audio outputs and send the same sound to more outputs at once!
    Hope that helped!

  • Midi controller / audio interface

hi - After years of working with Cubase on a PC, i have become a brand new mac convert and have just invested in a macbook pro with logic express.
I am looking for recommendations for getting midi in & out of the computer as well as a good audio interface. I play keyboards and will use an external midi sound module for sounds so midi latency (as near as possible to zero) is important as is audio quality and I am looking to buy a new midi controller keyboard. Am i right in thinking that the new breed of keyboards will act as the midi interface too?
Finally if there are any good "starting out" reading resources you can point me to that would be greatfully appreciated!
    thanks

    Hi Alex,
    Welcome to the Forum!
You already have the solution on the back of your mind,
Most midi keyboard controllers can be pluged via USB to your computer, and act as a midi interface for other modules too,
some of them also have an audio input.
As you don't state any buget, my only advice will go to the audio interface,
each one has it's own preferences, and I'm sure it's going to rain answer on that matter; go for an Firewire interface to audio (USB's weak), also take a look at your internal HD (I believe it's an 5400rpm drive) you need and external HD 7200rpm in that case for audio.
Finally, if the resources you looking are about Le, instead of reading
the best I fiound to date is Martin Sitter's videos:
