Mini Concern

Hi,
I have been using my mini as a replacement for my xp box for almost a year now, and it is continuing to amaze me day after day. I just, however, encountered an experience which has left me feeling slightly concerned. I rendered some Garageband work to iTunes whilst listening to a song in iTunes and talking to my friend on MSN Messenger. During all of this fairly hard drive intensive activity, I noticed that my system started making a whistling / screaming sound. At first I considered this to be my noisy power brick but to my surprise it was in-fact coming from within the minis shell. I considered that the sound was coming from my 80-Gig Seagate hard drive and thus I quit every running app on my mac. The sound didn't stop. I then shutdown the system and re-started it and the sound is no longer present, however, I have never throughout the one year that I have had my mini heard this sound and it does raise an issue of concern.
I checked the system profiler and it stated "S.M.A.R.T" status verified, whatever this means. I must also add that I have had my mini running for around four days, with the hard drives being allowed to sleep whenever possible. Should I worry about the health of my system from this simple experience, or should I understand that hard drives often make these sounds and there is nothing to worry about at all?
Thanks in advance for any help

The fan could easily create the sort of noise you describe, if it's not totally healthy in itself. Dry bearings, or dirt/dust on the thrust face can cause remarkably dire-sounding effects that vary by temperature, vibration caused by other components, even small variations in voltage or load.
Without taking the lid off, I doubt there's any way to be sure where inside the box the noise originates, and identifying where the sound is coming from is made harder by the fact it will 'leak' out the optical drive slot and ventilation holes more readily than through the casing.
You might try and recreate the the conditions that gave rise to the noise the last time, and see if it happens again. If it's the fan, you would normally be able to change the noise by putting the system on it's side (thus changing the bearing's thrust face). One thing I think is invariably true - that if the hard drive were to make that sort of noise, it very likely would be a precursor to imminent failure. You might therefore want to boot up from the install disc, and run the disc utility from there, selecting the option to 'repair disc' (you can't run this option from the disk utility on the hard drive because you can't repair the boot disc). This will check the drive out and find any signs of the sort of damage that is commonly experienced prior to drive failure.

  • Can't view photos in edit mode

    Hello,
I just upgraded to iPhoto '08, and while I can view all my thumbnails ok, the photos themselves won't load at all in edit mode.
I was using iPhoto to try to"jumpstart" my iWeb (per my other help request in another topic) when I noticed this.
I have Leopard 10.5.2, iPhoto 7.1.2 and a 1.8 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM in my upgraded G4 tower. I tried deleting the preferences file, rebuilding the library file, opening in another account, etc, with no luck. I had even just erased my hard drive and cleanly re-installed Leopard, etc. with still the same problems in both apps. Do I just need to add more memory perhaps? I can't think of anything else...?Does Leopard require much more memory than Panther (which I had before) to run properly?
    Thanks,
    Paul

I've had the what sounds like the exact same problem with iPhoto '08. I, too, have an upgraded 1.8 GHz G4 (AGP Graphics) running OS 10.5.3 (although the original installation was 10.5.1 and the same problem occurred before the software updates). When I try to edit a photo, the edit window opens but no picture appears. Clicking on the various editing tools and manipulating them (blindly, on a blank screen) shows that editing is actually taking place, and that changes can be saved.
An earlier post of mine concerned the first problem I noticed since my OS and processor updates; namely, that the DVD player app won't work, but instead returns an error message saying that a valid device could not be found for playback. Several responses to that post seemed to suggest that the ATI Rage 128 video card might be the culprit and that it would need to be replaced. In the past week I've been on the phone or in email contact with tech support people at ATI, Sonnet, Other World Computing, and Apple, the last being the least knowledgeable of all of them, I'm sorry to say.
The Sonnet guy personally runs a computer just like mine, but with the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac video card. That item costs $209 at OWC. But ATI says it won't work because of the G4's 200 power supply.
These folks think that the iPhoto problem would be solved by the new video card -- but I'm not yet convinced I want to spend that kind of money to find out. Most also say that the DVD Player issue would be fixed, although the OWC guy says it has nothing to do with it.
So we're going blind here, with much conflicting expert opinion. I'll keep watching for further discussion.

  • DVI to Component Video - Compatibility Question

Hello, everyone. I am in a pickle with my soon to be new Mac Mini, concerning the issue of hooking it up to a TV for use as a monitor.
My problem is thus: The TV is a 26" LCD with only a maximum of a Component Video input (no VGA or HDMI), and the Mini has only DVI out. I have seen a cable and/or adapter on the internet that converts DVI to Component, but there is a warning that says the DVI port must support it, or the graphics card must support it. I am wondering if anyone knew if this would work with the Mac Mini. My only other alternative is to use the DVI to Video adapter with S-Video, which on the 1368x768 TV would be inferior. I would prefer component, but am unsure if it would even work because Apple's Tech Specs on the Mini lists only DVI to VGA conversion or the S-Video/Composite adapter, and does not specifically say if it supports Component.
Any support would be GREATLY appreciated, as I have been up for three hours into the wee hours researching all the aspects of my problem, and am unable to figure it out. THANK YOU!
    Duncan
EDIT: Here is a link to the adapter: http://sewelldirect.com/dvivideoadapter.asp
    And cable: http://sewelldirect.com/DVI-to-Component-Adapter-Cable-6ft.asp
That way you can see what I mean about that cryptic warning. All I need to know is if the Mac Mini can support that sucker! Thanks again!

Our local video "expert" is BSteely, and hopefully he will weigh in on your question.
Some posts of his from the past, which may relate:

The impression I get is that you might need a more expensive adapter to convert DVI to component.
BTW can you give us the model number of your LCD TV? Thanks!
AppleTV is probably better suited for a component-only TV, though the Mini can certainly do a good job when the TV does have digital or VGA inputs.

  • Restricting a matching rule to user

    Hi All,
In my project there are multiple strategies defined depending upon the country and region.I wanted to know if we can restrict the user to use a particular strategy only because i m using named searches concept to allow a user to operate on records to particular country or region only.
    I had mainly 2 questions
    1. Is there any provision in MDM so that we can restrict the user to particular strategy only
    2. Or is there any method in MDM so that the matching rule like Selected vs All or All vs All can be greyed out so that i want to force user ro use matching rule Selected vs Result or Result vs result only. This is mainly mine concern because if user by mistake selects the Selected vs All MDM performance may go down because we have recoreds upto 650000.
    Please help me in this
    Thanks and Regards
    Nitin

    Hi,
Try creating MDM Roles and granting access to only your Named Search. Assign this role to the respective user and test your scenario whether it works or not.
Check MDM Console Guide page 306 - http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwmdm71/helpdata/en/4b/71608566ae3260e10000000a42189b/MDMConsole71.pdf

  • Few SAP queries

    Dear  Poojary Chetan
Thanks for the stuff of SAP Insatallation and Upgradation. I have downloaded it form Rapidshare.
Just a few questions I have in my mind while I am going through your docs.
    1. What about the source DVD/ CD from which you are installation the SAP?
    2. Where can I get that DVD/CD?
    3. Systems minimum requirements?
    4. Right Now I am working on SAP FICO 4.6C. What are the differences of MySAP and Netweaver as compared to SAP 4.6C.
    5. You have not mentioned Installation of SAP 4.6C on WIndows and Linux in your this docs as displayed in the attached Snap.
    6. After Installation of 4.6C how to configure the main modules e.g. FICO, SD, MM (as mine concerned is with FICO Configuration).
    7. If I am missing or wrong at some point, do correct me or guide me.
    THANKS in Advance.
    Shahzad Iqbal

    Dear Iqbal,
The cds and dvds of SAP ECC6.0 is provided by SAP. You need to research more on ,and explore all this on SAP Market Place.
To download the cd you should be having a solution manager landscape later which helps in downloading patches and installation ,also to generate key when you install. You need to study more on License and agreement.
System Minimum requirement is all provided in sap box and sap instguides.
When you speak about the differences between 4.6, my sap  and Netweaver. Netweaver is the latest landscape which combines ABAP standalone installation, Standalone Java installation and mixed abap+ Java application. Your 4.6c is based on Abap .
Try to explore more on Architecture of Netweaver ,http://service.sap.com/instguides for SAPNETWEAVER.
I am not working on functional side, the document posted is only on the Basis side for Netweaver.
Please do close the post .
    Cheers,
    Chetan.

  • Cut-to-case backup strategy

Me is on seting up a concept of backup strategy for mbp being planned to be used in our environment.
Till now no experience with mac clients at all.
We will do it stepwise. At the beginning the Mavericks on-board tool for backup Time Machine.
As soon as bit conformable with platform disk cloning will possibly be included in the process.
But only if Time Machine not sufficient for our needs.
Finally if one day it turns out it all does not suite to our needs a switch to 3rd party backup solutions will be conducted.
However this day me can see some signals saying the Time Machine will not
be suitable due to functional limitations. So for final decision bit more information is needed.
We plan to use NAS attached to router as backup destination storage.
Mass storage of nas will be formatted in NTFS. Mac client will get access to nas for
purposes of backup at regular cycle but not continuously, let's say 1 time a week - this corresponds to current
backup strategy and fulfills the needs completely.
As far mine understanding is the TM drive (backup target) removes backed up items in following situations
    - as soon as the remaining storage space is below some limit the oldest increments
get removed, number of increments being removed depends on how quick the minimal free space
      requirement if met.
    - there is no warranty a file is backed up on TM drive as soon the drive gets connected to mac client
and the original item no more exists on the client's drive (source)
    A. Is the above understanding fine? Any other situation to be added onto the list?
    B. Local snapshots: Is this how the foundation of mac os trash bin are built and look?
    C. Or is the mac os trash bin a function and implementation independent from TM local snapshots?
So a nas is planned to store the backup files. Additionally a usb 3.0 drive is planned to backup the backup nas.
In emergency situation where the mac os will following procedure will need to be conducted.
step 1, By other means the backup files are to be copied from ntfs formatted nas storage to
external drive - usb or thunderbolt - formatted using mac os conform file system.
step 2, external drive with TM backups prepared as above to be connected locally to mac client
step 3, recovery using Recovery HD is to be carried out.
    Is the above understanding fine?

    Yes, you are right.
In the meantime have had more read about TM.
As the well-known article does it claim it in the beginning indeed a complicated
    and mysterious machine.
I guess for the same reason one needs more than one read runs
    to have an overview.
Now I am aware, TM is proprietary and rather a closed-platform system.
Those components are not standardized. If any grade of flexibility is shown
it is so thanks to capabilities of that proprietary system.
I see some functional limitations shown by TM which immediate disqualify this
solution in our environment. We will need to take a 3rd party solution.
What a pity, the costs continue to explode.
Cloud based solution will not be acceptable due to connection rates
in my region. It is also quite regular case here to be left without broad -band connection
for more weeks after had changed the flat.
Also due to mine concerns regarding data security basically nowadays.

  • Googlemail folders (IMAP vs POP Which is the lesser of the two evils)

I just changed my googlemail account to IMAP from POP as I was sick of rereading emails on my iphone that I had already read on my laptop. Now emails appear twice, in 'Inbox' and also in the googlemail 'All Mail' folder. I've tried the 'mailbox' / 'use this mailbox for' trick but it obviously doesn't work for the 'all mail' one.
I just want for my Apple mail folders to appear as they did when it was set up through POP but for it to unmark the messages I've read on other devices/online and vice vercer.
I'm tearing my hair out and ready to just revert to reading all emails online, at least then I won't have to read them twice. Any help comes much appreciated

    Hello Jonny!
As I understand the matter, Google IMAP keeps messages in the "All Mail" folder and just tags labels like "Inbox" or "From Uncle Al". This means that for every message there inevitably will appear a duplicate in the "All Mail" folder in Apple Mail.
If you already have read all messages and the unread counter next to the "All Mail" folder still says "7" then select "Mailbox" > "Sync all accounts" in Mail.app.
One more addition: if you don't like "Drafts" and "Spam" to be sub-entries to the white GoogleMail folder in the sidebar, you can move them by selecting each in turn and setting "Mailbox" > "Use this mailbox for".
Hope that clears up the matter.

  • Re: Qosmio F50-126 - Freezes when on battery power

    *hey everyone*
I bought my Qosmio F50-126 couple of months ago with 3 year international warranty. There is something about the notebook which really irritates me--- *THE FREEEZEE*.
I have noticed that when I am watching a video on any player and any format, the whole computer freeezess *for 1 or 3 seconds and resumes* by itself *But the interesting thing is that it ONLY happens when running on battery*. It runns like a dream when running on ac with battery being charged. *IT INCREDIBLY annoying*
When your into the movie and lights are off and your in ur comfly warm bed. The WHOLE computer freezes with the audio jittering. It only happens for 1 or 2 seconds but it occurance is *COMPLETLY RANDOM.* If the laptop is in the mood of watching the movie it only freezes 2 or 3 times but sometimes it just get on my nerve.
I disabled my kaspersky and other random process runing. Please help me!
*Just for the note: It only happens the freeze only happens when running on battery*. Oh- hope this help
I notices that my HDD light on the notebook doesnt blink that often when on battery and playing the video so its not the load time the reason... also...SAME RESULT WHEN I RUN ON HIGH PERFORMACE, BALANCED or power saver---actually powersaver is *_THE WORST.... BYE... PLESE HELP ME OR MY LIFE IS DOOM_*

hey-- i'm amazed with the quick reply.. thank you.. okay back to the notebook
Yes, i did install nvidia driver from there website, 9700M GTS driver. The lastest one there is. You are correct about the heating problem but i believe its with all the qosmio because after reading a thread on it about the GPU temperature, i think it normal which it shouldnt be. Like, when doing normal work, the gpu temps hovers around 60 C but when playing game,, max it reached was 105 C when ruinnin the game at max performancel. Forexample, farcry 2 when on ultra high runs smooth with the gpu temp around 101 but when everythikng low,, back to 'normal' temp 60. But the gpu temp isnt mine concern. My concern is the freeze. So you mentioned about Toshiba Display Driver and i will give it a test and see if makes any differnce. I hope it does but i'm afraid it might downgrade my graphic power frame rates but i will still give it a go and see if it makes any diference. Also, sometimes, my display driver stops working, the nvidia website downloaded driver.
And final answer to the second post,,, umm..i dont remember,, its just these few days its getting on my nerve and decided to post a thread on the internet.
hope this helppp... so..im goin to toshiba driver and download the display driver and see if that make a differnce.i hope it does..
bytheway... only thing i dont understand is why doesnt it freeze my runin on ac?

  • Work well in my mini but not in my iMac 27". Only difference is 27" with CS5 , are there any concerns?

My mini works well with Lion but my 27" iMac always stop some where. I did install two times and restore to SL because I want new thing but I have to work. The difference between two computer sis just the iMac with CS5 but the mini don't. Any concern ?

I don't really have a suggestion, other than to point out that others have had problems with CS5 in Lion.  You did not describe your problems, and I don't use Adobe CS, so I have no idea whether that might be the cause in your case.  If the problems people describe with CS5 match your problems, then you may want to update to CS5.5.

  • Wifi concerns replacing eMac with new mac mini

I have an eMac (PPC) which is currently maxed out at 10.5.8.  I was thinking of upgrading to a mac mini.  My only concern is that I currently have an old mac mini (late 2006) and it's ability to use wifi with its internal airport interface is severely limited.  The only placment I have found this mac mini to reliably work in is if the mac mini and the wifi router (belkin) are located in the same room.  The eMac I'm thinking about replacing is on a different floor than the router it's airport interface just works, as do all of our laptops.  I understand that some the wifi problems with this mac mini might have to do with the antenna placement in its chassis.  So my question is has Apple improved the reliability of the airport interface in the mac mini ?

The router is really NOT the issue as far as I can tell.  Laptops situated right next to the mac mini have no problem getting and maintaining a connection.  The eMac with a much older airport card and situated on the same floor as the mac mini, maintains its connection as well.  The late 2006 mac mini initially starts off with a good connection but within 10-20 minutes after startup, the connection goes bad, and won't return no matter how many times one reboots.  If I shutdown the mac mini and restart it after an hour or so, the connection becomes solid again for about 10-20 minutes.  Interestingly, when the mac mini is in the same room as the router, the connection starts out solid and stays solid.
My concern, from what I can tell, is that the basic chassis design of the new mac minis don't appear to be that much different in concept than my late 2006 mac mini, except for missing the CD R/W drive and being more compact.  Is there an inherent design flaw in the mac mini (older and current versions) that degrades wifi connectivity in cases where the mac mini is not within line of site of the router?

  • Questions Concerning the Matrox MXO2 Mini

Based on comments on this forum and other online research, I am seriously considering purchasing a Matrox MXO2 Mini for laptops along with the PCIe host card so that I can use the Mini on both my Macbook Pro (Unibody 2.53 Core2 Duo) and my Mac Pro (8-core Harpertown) and edit the captured footage in FCP7. I have a few questions that I could not find the answer to online, and I am hoping that you might be able to help.
The Matrox Mini is supposed to up-rez SD to HD on capture. How do those of you who use the Mini feel about this conversion of SD to HD? I know you can never really exceed the quality of your original SD material, so I am wondering if there is much to be gained by taking SD material and converting it to HD?
I would like to capture some analog material that is S-VHS recorded. The Mini can apparently do this through S-video, but I don't see any S-video connectors on the back of the unit in pictures I have looked at. Is this possible and how?
Finally, are there any caveats to using the MXO2 Mini, especially with a laptop? I shall be using a firewire 800 drive to capture the material to, and my Macbook Pro does have the Express 34 card slot required by the Matrox Mini.
Thank you very much in advance for any comments on this device that you care to make and for considering my questions above.
    Tom

How do those of you who use the Mini feel about this conversion of SD to HD?
It equaled what I got with the big boy the MXO2. No, you cannot get any better quality converting SD to HD...if anything it will degrade the image as you are blowing it up. But, there are times we need to, and doing it via hardware in realtime is better than most software versions. Compressor can do a slightly better job, but when you set all the settings to best and let it crank away for days.
    The upscale is good....very good.
so I am wondering if there is much to be gained by taking SD material and converting it to HD?
Nope. Only do it if you need to mix it with HD footage, if the HD footage is a majority of the footage, and you need to deliver and HD show. Going SD to HD, then back to SD for like DVD or DV makes zero sense. It will make the footage look worse.
Finally, are there any caveats to using the MXO2 Mini, especially with a laptop? I shall be using a firewire 800 drive to capture the material to, and my Macbook Pro does have the Express 34 card slot required by the Matrox Mini.
Not that I can think of. I did this with DVD and betaSP footage. zero issues.

  • Hello iPad friends I need some help concerning connection to WiFi. My iPad mini won't pick up on any WiFi and I have tried resetting both the iPad and WiFi settings to no avail. Also, even inputting the name manually won't work. Help?!

So yeah basically my iPad won't pick up on WiFi networks and I am wondering if there is a remedy to this. Thanks :)

The easy things first. Tap wifi in settings. Is wifi turned on, can you see your wifi  in choose a network, do you have airplane mode turned on, is it just your wifi router or all wifi signals, if you go to a public site can you see their network? Have you tried a reset.?  If your still having problems,  take your mini to the Apple Store and let them show you how. If they can't connect to their signal ask them for further suggestions

  • I know very little about Imac, but I am becoming increasingly concerned that something is not right with mine

    Dear All,
I'm rather new to all this so please excuse any bad forum etiquette. I have been noticing recently that I seem to be having less control over my Imac (purchased 2012). I'm assuming I have a virus and as much as it pains me to say it I think its been done by someone I know.
Please could someone have a look at these screen shots and give me your thoughts, It would be a great help as I dont really know where to start with all of this.
    Many Thanks
    B

That window is your backup scripts - there is no reason for you to open or amend them, and doing so might screw things up. It looks like the app is AppleScript Editor - quit that app from the dock (force quit if necessary by holding down the option key while you click the dock icon and click Quit)
That entry in Console looks like either you tried to FaceTime or call your friend, or they tried to call you. Yosemite (if that's what you have installed) conflates FaceTime with audio calls, so it could be either.

  • 20" iMac and external Dell 24" : doesn't work with Mini DVI to DV adapter!

Help! My lovely Dell HP LP2475w 24" Monitor can't be used as an external monitor. The native screen resolution is 1900x1200 60Hz. The Apple site claims the iMac is capable of being able to output this resolution.
When the HP is plugged in via the apple mini to dvi adapter a (tested) DVI lead, it recognises the monitor, but can't bring it to life. Just an occasional flash. In the resolution listing for the HP, the native resolution 1900x1200 isn't listed.
Plugging a cruddy old 20" Samsung with the same DVI leads works with no problems.
I NEED to use the HP for my Photo editing, and phone calls to Apples support have proved fruitless.
Does anyone have a 20" Intel iMac and an HP LP2475w set up that works?
    Many thanks for any help.

I'm glad you got it working!
So do you have it working at full 1900x1200? I've noticed a few more oddities about my iMac on this monitor. First off is that initially I could only go as high as 1680x1050, which I think is the native resolution of the iMac. Now I actually see two more options, one of which being 1920x1200. This surprises me since you couldn't get it to a full 1920. Both resolutions produce the same size image on the HP, but the 1680x1050 is fuzzier. It's odd to me, same dimensions just a little less clear. I can stretch that using the HP's settings to full screen, but I cannot adjust the 1920/1200 image even though there is a black border around it.
Can you tell me what color settings you have on the HP? I have really struggled to find something I like. I actually like how things look in my iMac, and my MBP. I can't get things to look the same on the HP. I also feel like text is just a hair fuzzier on the HP than on either the iMac or MBP. I'm tempted to try a used 23" Apple Cinema Display, but I'm not sure I'll have any better luck with that. I mostly concerned about the image quality when I use my laptop, and for some reason I'm not getting great results with the HP or Dell externals that I've tried.

  • How can I actually get a WiFi problem FIXED on my Mini?

OK, 32 years after buying my first Apple product (Apple ][+) I actually need hardware support for one of my products - an iPad Mini.
    The result?
    Worst. Support. Ever.
It has been THREE weeks since the issue, and tomorrow will be 3 weeks since my first call.  The basic problem?  When  left for work my Mini would connect to my home network just fine, but when I got home it wouldn't. And hasn't since.  On my network I also have 3 iPads (1, 2, 3), Macbook Pro, couple of iPod Touchs, Kindle Fires, Nexus 7, PC laptops, Android phones and so on.
    - First, they pushed me off to Airport support and that involved loads of reconfiguration and restting.  He left me with 'homework' of totally reconfiguring the network (2009 Airport Extreme and 2x Airport Express extenders).
    - I finished all of that and it STILL wouldn't work, so I was on the phone, and they eventually decided to send a box to get a repair.
    - I get the box a couple of days later - but it doesn't come with return info so I have to get the PDF to print and attach (which means another day before it goes out).
    - They get the Mini at Apple, cannot reproduce the issue and turn it around ... but the email notice is late so I miss the delivery truck, and it ends up at ~6PM the next day before I see the Mini.  Not surprisingly it doesn't work.  Worse yet, I got my new iPhone 5 and it works immediately and perfectly on our network.
    - I get on the phone again and although I ask for a PDF label so I can return the Mini, the person ends up sending out another box.
    - The next day I take the Mini into work and it works great on WiFi (it had been spotty before, but they reconfigured it over the weekend), so I grab a WiFi analyzer for my Samsung Galaxy S3 and see it is broadcasting on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
    - I wonder if that is the issue ... so at home I switch the bnetwork to 5GHz and the Mini functions immediately and perfectly.  Of course I lose connectivity for about half of the other things.  So I switch back to 2.4GHz, and unsurprisingly the Mini doesn't work but everything else does.  I have found the problem (no thanks to Apple).
    - So I call Apple that evening, and talk to a support rep, who listens for a bit but basically says that it is very likely that regardless of what he puts in the case notes that the support person would take the Mini out switch it on and if it worked they would put it in the box and return it.
    - He put me through to someone else who he said would make sure that the situation was properly handled.
    - Still concerned, when the box arrived (Christmas Eve), I put in a note detailing the issue and with big letters 'PLEASE DO NOT RETURN THIS IPAD MINI WITHOUT REPAIRING, IT DOES NOT WORK ON 2.4GHZ WIFI'.  I wrapped that around the Mini with the writing on the outside.
    - On the 26th I get a notice that it had been received by service.
    - This morning I get a call from FedEx at 8AM to be expecting the shipment.  Then a while later I get the email from Apple.
    - Of course, as I checked the email I see that they did exactly the same thing ... returned without doing ANYTHING.
    - So ... surprise, surprise ... it STILL doesn't work on 2.4GHz WiFi (but will work on 5GHz).
    - So again I call.  This time the person sends me to a 'supervisor', who assures me that they will do a swap and gives me a specific case # to take to the UPS Store where they will be able to get it shipped out to the correct warehouse and it will be resolved.  He gives me the case #, and his name and contact #.
We got over a foot of snow, so it took a bit to get out, but I had to drive my son to a house to do shoveling as part of the local Youth Bureau, and then headed into town to the UPS Store.
You probably know what is coming - when I get there they cannot pull up any info on the repair ID, nor by my phone number.  And when I check the email on my iPhone there is nothing new from Apple Support, meaning that Jason didn't actually DO ANYTHING!  I called from the UPS Store but naturally got voice mail.
So here I sit three weeks later, having done 100% of the work myself with only pure incompetence on the part of Apple, and with a still-broken iPad Mini in my hands that has seen both coasts a lot recently.
Worse yet, it isn't like the iPad Mini WiFi is a RARE issue, it is EVERYWHERE, whether the initial disconnects, the stuff resolved by 6.0.2 or the failures like I am seeing.
Worse still, a friend of mine had a similar issue but was just dealing with it, and when I brought up the whole 2.4 vs 5GHz issue, he took it to the Apple store, told them, and walked out with a new one within 10 minutes.
Unfortunately I am 2 hours in either direction from an Apple store so that isn't an option based on my schedule and my family schedule.
So instead I get treated like a second-class citizen, and have direct requests and troubleshooting ignored by an incompetent staff that doesn't even do the most basic troubleshooting.
Any suggestions of how to get ACTUAL support from Apple outside of a store?

Just to close out ... the 'supervisor' was clueless as it turns out.  Apple does NOT have a deal with UPS on handling the Mini, so the person who gave me the info was wrong.  Did he call back?  No ... he just let me go out and find out myself.
So I called again, and this time eventually ended up with a manager, who told me that the UPS Store thing wouldn't work, but that a box would arrive and then there would be a 'forced replacement'.
About 10 minutes later he called back and said he discovered that EVERYTHING the supervisor did was wrong ... he didn't actually properly flag for auto-replace, so I would have gone through an identical cycle again!  So he had to restart the whole process, meaning I would get TWO 'coffins', but that I would then get an auto-replacement and would see that indicated in my support email.
I got the email, saw 'auto-replace'.  Got the box on the 28th and immediately turned it around.  Apple got the box on the 31st, and on the 1st I got emails that my Mini would arrive on the 2nd and it also had the new serial #.
Yesterday I grab the box from FedEx and go home to check it out.  As expected, it IMMEDIATELY worked on my WiFi without issue ... and has worked perfectly since.
    So ...
    - it was NOT my home network.
    - it WAS a hardware issue with the Mini
    - Apple does NOT do proper testing on the Mini to detect what appears to be a fairly common issue.
    - non-retail customers ARE treated as second-class by support.
This issue took FOUR WEEKS to resolve, involved FOUR shipments back & forth, and the ONLY reason it got resolved was that *I* did the troubleshooting that Apple either would not or could not do.
For someone who has been an Apple customer for more than 30 years, this has been a sobering experience ... I quite frankly expected much better from them.
