Mini to control audio sources (hi-fi)

Can a mac mini be set up to control audio sources instead of a traditional hi fi? For example, use the mini to play cd's, and to control itunes libraries on the mini (and remotely from other computers in the home network)? Would I use the apple remote and a flatscreen TV for a menu? Would I need a keyboard also?
If there's a one stop shop on apple or third party to clarify these options that would be great info.
Thanks much

Yes to pretty much everything you asked. You can host music and other media on a mini for sure. You can control it locally or remotely. You can elect to use the Apple remote with Front Row or you can use a keyboard. You can use a TV as a display or go with a headless server, whichever makes more sense for what you have in mind.
Basically the mini is a pretty flexible device and you can roll it how ever you want within the context of everything you asked. It just depends on what you want from it as to how it would be configured.

    Hello Everyone,
I seem to have lost my audio source controls on my timeline. Any suggestions on how to get it back?
    Thanx,

Once FCP Rescue is downloaded and open (make sure you have the correct version), Select TRASH. This deletes your preference files.
Open FCP now. All the settings are reset to default - including things like scratch disk, custom tool setups etc.
Once you have gone through the set up procedures, BACKUP the settings. When you need to overwrite corrupted preference files after this, use the RESTORE command.
If this doesn't solve your problem, there is likely something else at work here.

  • How do I record an audio source outside of Logic while in Logic?

Hi everyone, I have a question I would like to address to the forum.
How do I record an audio source outside of Logic while in Logic? For example, I would like to record the audio off a youtube video or dvd to be then used in Logic. I am using a Dididesign M-Box Mini for both my audio input and audio output i.e. all sound is coming in and out of the M-Box. I hope this is an easy question to answer (I am a new Mac user). Thanks in advance.

Use the 3.5mm audio out jack on the back of your computer. Connect it to your audio interface, and record like normal. You need an adapter cable. ( 3.5mm stereo to two 1/4 inch mono) see link.

My bluetooth seems to have stopped working in my car. Both phone and car audio says it is connected but nothing comes through car speaker.  I no longer have screen on iphone that says to choose audio source.  How do I get that screen back?

Thanks, this was the clue I needed to figure it out.
From Settings you can pull up Control Center.
In Control Center you can enable "Access from within Apps" (also "Access from Lockscreen")
Now when I'm playing music, I can swipe up from the bottom and a little control center window slides up. Neat - this is new since my old iPod. On this window, the name of the current Bluetooth connection appears. Tap on that, and a list of connected Bluetooth items appears. I just tap on the one I want to connect to and I am now playing through the speakers I want.

  • Enhanced dictation shuts down other audio sources.

enhanced dictation shuts down other audio sources. So I cannot transcribe voice memos or listen to music as I type.  this is a 6 y.o. IMac.  4 GB RAM.  any idea why?

    Ok, I reply to myself.
The problem was caused by the microphone and the firewire connection. Enhanced Dictation is not ready to work with my audio hardware (micro Shure and Presonus audio card via Firewire). Although this audio hardware works fine with other software and even with online dictation, when I use it with Enhanced Dictation, the system seems to be working (the micro bars of the microphone in the screen move ok) but no words are written at all.
The solution was to connect it analogically, using an audio connection between my audio card and the line-in connection of the mac mini (stereo).
Hope Apple will solve this problem. I guess many people probably are having the same problem, mainly people with pro audio cards. I hope that this will help them

  • Is it possible to use my MacBook Pro to control audio playback on my iPhone?

I wish to use my iPhone as an audio source for my home hi-fi system, but would like the convenience of being able to select tracks, etc from my MacBook Pro
Previously I have used the "Remote" app to do the "opposite" (i.e. use my MacBook Pro as the audio source and use my iPhone as the remote), but if I could do it the other way around, it would mean I would still be free to use the MacBook for internet browsing etc, without needing to have it always connected to my hifi system audio out cable
Thanks guys, appreciate any help or ideas!
P.S. I don't think this second part would be possible - but also, can I use my MacBook Pro to control a digital radio app like WunderRadio or similar? (This question for bonus marks)

    For anyone else interested...
After lots of googling, I have found that there are some iPhone apps that lets you do this:
    Tunes Remote  (http://www.tunesremote.com/)
    And Reverse Remote (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/id438057551?mt=8&affId=1736887)
I tried Tunes Remote which cost $1.99 and worked perfectly

  • Switching audio sources without stopping FMLE

We use several Osprey cards, and wish to change from one audio/video source to another audio/video source without stopping FMLE.
We can do the video switching from one Osprey input to the other using wirecast or vidblaster software video mixers, but are at a loss how to switch the sudio from one osprey input to another without stopping FME and selecting the other audio inpout from the drop-down list. We do not know of any audio mixer that FMLE recognises with which we can accomplish changing one audio source to another withour stopping FMLE.
Any information in this regard much appreciated,
    Thank you

to my knowledge, there is no software mixer with 0 lag because its software.  Hardware allows for no lag because theres nothing reading the info, encoding etc.  Software reads the audio data, usually it chunks, this is why it creates lag.  i did some testing using a usb mic and listening for the amount of time between me making the sound and it actually coming out.  Its just barely noticeable to annoy the person talking if he or she were to be listening to it through headphones or speakers, but i would estimate about 1/8 of a second.  Though if you want to be able to remotely control a mixer and you have someone working with you with a little technical experience, you could have them rig up a remote control system using remote control airplane actuators to turn the knobs.
also while looking mackie control mixers say they have motorized faders, and since its program controlled, i believe you can actually control the faders using a program, but his would mean getting a new mixer.  if you want to look these up, http://www.mackie.com/products/mcupro/

I want to make a slideshow to view on my television with image's duration ranging from seconds to an hour or more and I want to use my iPhone or iPad mini to control the television through my Apple tv.
I've been unable to locate an app that will do this.  The Photos app that comes with the phone or iPad has extremely limited duration controls.  PhotoStream seems to load everything from my phone or iPad not allowing me to just load up a set group of images.
iPhoto for iPad is getting some terrible recent reviews.  I tried a couple other free apps but they don't use Airplay.
I can do something like this with iPhoto and my MB Air, but it's kind of ugly to have the computer open in order to connect by Airplay to my Apple TV.  I've thought the iPad or iPhone would be a lower profile controller.
    Am I out of luck?

Thanks for your help.  Since I'm uninterested in loading all my photos (the only option) into photostream, I won't be able to use the settings in ATV.  I guess I'm just stuck with using iPhoto on my MB Air.  Thanks again.

  • Kanex MIni DisplayPort+USB Audio to HDMI Adapter --NO SOUND

    Hi,
I just purchased a Kanex Mini DisplayPort+USB Audio to HDMI Adapter for my new Samsung flat screen so I could watch netflix movies. The guy at Tekserve (NYC based authorized dealer) said it's really cool b/c it's audio and video all in one. Two cables are attached to a small box on one side and on the other side of the box is for the HDMI cable which goes to the TV (most of you prpbably already know this) .
The two attached cables fit into the the USB (audio) + mini display port. The video works great, but no sound. I called Apple for tech support and we tried a few things like changing the sound output to USB, but no luck.
I can call Tekserve on Monday, but would love to figure this out before then for the week-end.
    Thanks everyone for your help.
    Mary

There are actually 2 different Mini Display port to HDMI adapters from Kanex. One supports 2 channel audio through the USB audio out cable, which is the one you have Mary. The other one with the extra audio plug cable supports 5.1 digital audio.
    http://kanexlive.com/products/item.aspx?id=3323
    http://kanexlive.com/products/item.aspx?id=3495
I don't have either of these adapters but I would think that you "should" be able to go into your System Preferences under Sound. If the USB plug from the adapter is plugged into your MacBook, then it should show up in the output window in the Sound preferences which you would then choose instead of outputting the sound to the built-in MacBook speakers.
At the bottom of the product description page of the adapter that you have (the USB 2.0 version), it says this:
+Sound Output setting on Macs must be changed to "USB Sound Device/USB Type" to have the adapter operating correctly.+*
Let us know if you get it working properly. I'm considering getting one also.
Sorry.... I just re-read your initial post and it sounds like you already DID try switching the sound output to USB with no luck. The only other thing I can think of is the adapter might be bad and maybe exchange it for another one from where you purchased it. Or you could maybe exchange it for the 5.1 digital audio out version. Although it sounds like your sound is going directly into the tv via HDMI and not a surround sound receiver.
Kanex does have tech support and contact links on their web page. Maybe you should email them directly about your problem. Unfortunately I'm sure you'll have to wait til sometime during the work week to get a reply back.

  • New Mac Mini and TrueHD audio

Has any one know if it's possible to play back uncompressed audio streams from .m2ts streams thru the HDMI connector, or are the Dolby Digital and/or DTS the only streams that can play back thru HDMI?

Apple have only said Dolby DTS works, and PCM works. They have not mentioned TrueHD. However others have said that currently the chips used in the Mac mini do not support sending True HD via the HDMI, even though the HDMI specification obviously allows this.
The conclusion is that we would have to wait for another newer Mac mini model with a better set of chips.
I have seen less to nothing about the possibility of running TrueHD via the Mini Displayport and then an adapter to HDMI. It is the case that the Mini Displayport supports audio on the 2010 Mac mini but it is likely the same chip issue prevents True HD.
This is all very disappointing of course.
For the moment, I am sticking with an Apple TV running XBMC which is far cheaper but still does not support TrueHD.
PS. If the rumours are that the next Apple TV only does 720p are true, then Microsoft will (rightly) be laughing at Apple's feeble efforts.

  • My iphone4 recently stopped working in my car and no longer asks for audio sources.  It is paired and turns off the radio when a call occurs but does not utilize the speakers or mic in the car.

My iPhone recently stopped asking for audio source in car and no longer works through the speakers.  It pairs with the vehicles just fine, turns off music, but I must use the actual phone to communicate.  What happened?

The same problem I have today afternoon.
My car audio system is compatible with iPod USB connector and worked fine for also 6 months.
When connecting my iPod nano 6rd gen via USB to car audio system, iPod displays on its screen a sucessfull connection, and music tracks is successfully displayed on the car audio system. But do not play. Switch forward or backward by playlist (by the buttons on the car audio system) works also, but still there is no start playback.
I tried plugged my iPhone 5 via USB to car audio system - it's works fine.
I plugged iPod to my mac computer - itunes says it's all Ok.
I am confused and do not understand what is happening.
May be restoring to default factory settings iPod....

  • Iphone 4 no longer changing audio source to make call via in car bluetooth.

Hi, I have an Audi A4, my iphone 4 connects to it, you can look at the directory's, calls made, missed etc,
When you want to make a call or receive a call, the audio source from the phone is not put through the car, its only goes through the phone.
Checking the iphone, it used to show a list of audio sources i.e. the car's bluetooth connection, the speaker or the phone.
No it doesn't show the car's bluetooth.
My HTC Desire S has no such issues and voice can be heard through the car's bluetooth, so I assume that the car's bluetooth is not at fault.
    Thanks for any help

I had this same problem with my iPhone 4 and my BMW. I deleted the pairing and paired the phone to the car again, and the same issue occurred.
I reset the iPhone by pressing the on/off switch and the home button and that worked! The audio sources showed up and I was able to get audio from the car.

  • Can I select an external audio source?

I have  iMovie09 ver 8.0.6.  I'm using a Panasonic video camera (it uses miniDV tapes) connected to my MacBook (white plastic 07) via firewire.  When I have the cable from the mixer going into the camera and recording to tape; when I transfer the tape to MacBook, I get the external audio source great!!!  However, when I plug the cable directly into the MacBook, it still gives me the audio (BUT) from the built-in mic of the camera.  When I open GarabeBand and record the audio, its the external and its great.  However, I don't want to have both recording at the same time only to overlay the GarageBand audio onto the video clip.  Yes, I've selected the 'in-line' option from 'System Preferences'.
Is there a way that I can select the external source while in iMovie??  Looking at some other negative posts, I don't want to upgrade to iMovie 11 either.

I came across a much older post which I believe solved my issue.  I connected everything up first, then booted up the MacBook; then I selected 'built-in audio' from the 'voice-over' option within iMovie.  It recognized it right immediately.  However, now I'm not sure that the audio is in fact coming from the 'hot' microphones that I'm receiving from the mixer.  But that's just troubleshooting.

  • Simultanious audio output from both mini Displayport and Audio Output port?

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if someone who already has audio+video output through the mini displayport set up can be so kind and answer the following questions for me:
Can audio be output simultaniously from 3.5mm audio port as well as the mini displayport? That is, if I output both video and audio to my reciever through the 2010 iMac's mini Diplayport, can i use the standard audio output port to provide line input for a further set of (active) speakers (analog would be fine)?
In the case both outputs CANNOT work simultaniously, which one will work if i have both plugged in? If the mini displayport has higher rank (or priority or what whatever i should call the one that works when both outputs are plugged in), and the reciever it is plugged into is switched off, will audio automatically switch to the standard audio port? Same question goes if the standard audio output port has higher rank/priority?
    Many thanks in advance!
Just in case you are wondering why the heck i would wanna do that, here's some background:
I am planning on setting up my new 27' iMac on a 'work' desk in my bedroom, where i can comfortably sit and work on the computer as well as use the beautiful screen as my bedroom TV. Since i also wanna use my mac for all my living room multimedia needs (movies, tv shows, music, etc), i plan on running a long (15m) audio+video HDMI cable all the way up to my reciever in my living room. Furthermore, i am also planning on running a USB cable to the living room (through something of this sort: http://www.coolgear.com/images/171632pro.jpg) plugged in to a usb hub mainly for mouse/keyboard availability in the living room, but also for other things such as external hard drives and so on. The problem is that, apart from having my audio play in the living room, i also want to provide line input to my reference monitors that will be located at the iMac desk and i obviously much prefer i get the line input directly from the mac rather than running a third cable from reciever back to the speakers.
