Minimun requirements to UP an oracle instance
Hi
I have an image of Oracle 9i with RedHat EL 4. Oracle has been installed but not yet configured. Thats meant there is no any SID's , Tns, Lisners defined. Just for start and test instance , i have created a SID called "PROD" and setup other parameters in tnsnames and lisnters in certain files.
But when I'm trying to start the instance by "dbstart" command , i was getting certain init file not found message.
It seems , to get start an instance , there should be an init file created. How can we do it manually ?
and could you please tell me , what are basic/minimum requirements to get up an instance in oracle 9i ?
Many Thanks
Luke
You must
a. PreCreate the other database (the one where you want to import to)
b. PreCreat all the Tablespces in that databases (the Tablespace names must be the same as in the source databse but Tablespace storage parameters and datafile sizes can be different -- database file names, obviously, must be different if this database is to run on the same server)
optionally
a. PreCreate the users with the same roles and system privileges as granted in the source system
b. Manually synchronise SEQUENCE values by doing a DROP and CREATE in the new database after an import (this is in case they have got incremented in the source database since the export)
very optionally
a. PreCreate Tables and Indexes -- this is in case you want to pre-allocate extents to the tables and/or have them created in different tablespaces fom those they exist in in the source database
When you do a FULL export and import, it copies the
CREATE USER statements -- which you may want
CREATE TABLESPACE statements -- which you want to avoid. However, if you don't pre-create them, Oracle will attempt to recreate them with datafiles in the same location as in the source databse -- which will fail. (A caveate : If you run the import with the DESTROY option, importing into the new database without precreating tablespaces can cause Oracle to overwrite and corrupt your source database as it attempt to create the datafiles !)
CREATE TABLE statements -- which you migh pre-run to change storage / tablespaces

"Oracle instance <xxx> - cannot allocate log -Archival required" in the alert log file and could see many log switches in a second in archival destination.
we have three members of log groups (two in each group) in one node and same on the other. Should we have to increase log_buffer_size or addition of redo log files is required?

Bueno.
I hope this is what you meant,

We apas the error that you can not save the archive logs for lack of space on disk. That happens when any process that generates too many ransacciones need to be written in the logs. For that reason much archive log is generated and fills the space.
Removes archivelog older, and those who already have a backup and there will be no problem so I recommend you have a disk space minimum of 50%

Multiple oracle instances in single SLD
Hi
There is requirement from management that they need a seperate database in the present SLD (DEV,QAS,PRD). Since they plan to move this database in future to another SLD. I have gone through some SAP notes that u can have multiple SAP systems and underlying databases on a single host. Also I noted that u need to have a seperate transport directory.
My doubt is since SAP SID requires a Database SID during the installation. So how this new database can be incorporated in the present system.
If any white papers,pitfalls are highly appreciated.
ThanksHi Erick
It is the same oracle version i.e 9i rel.2. we need a seperate oracle insance. My concern is even though u installed a new database making it available in the present DEV,QAS,PRD is a problem. How the existing Dialog instances will recognise this new oracle instance.
what i came to know from the documents is that u need to have a seperate SAP systems and underlying the new database is quite possible and u need to take care of sizing. I searched on the net but couldn't find a similar scenario.
Any other inputs are higly appreciated.

Database creation // ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated. Disconnection f
hi',
i am trying to create a new database on my fedora 8 system (personal desktop not a remote system) using oracle 10g. But as soon
as i use script to create the database i get " ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated. Disconnection forced" error.
following information will help you analyse the problem. i am writing down all the steps i am doing and sending the alertlog file as well. i also have created all the folder's required for new database.
logging to terminal:

By the way, if you want to reclaim memory for your OS, you shouldn't worry about SGA_MAX_SIZE. Decrease SGA_TARGET instead.

Running HTMLDB against another Oracle Instance
I have an HTMLDB dashboard onto our system and would like to be able to run it against a different Oracle instance. Ideally would like to be able to choose the instance on the login screen. Currently we have to setup dblinks to each of our instances and then customise the application to select from the relevant instance. Any ideas?
AFAIK, Golden Gate has no requirement on Oracle edition to be used, but could have licence cost differences.
It works on Oracle from version 8i to the latest one, not only on Oracle database, and not only between same Oracle version and same OS, and not only between two Oracle db .

Dual oracle instances on a single server
can a server run two different oracle instances which are two different
versions oracle?
That is,one instance in 7.3.4 and another in 8i!
first of all is it possible that we have 2
installations of oracle in
the same server??
pl advise.Thanx for this reply.
Can you also please tell me as to what would be the sufficient system resources?
Masy be you can share your server config info if that's allright.
Regards,
Subbu

Yes it's possible. I'm running 8.0.4 and 8.1.6 64-Bit versions on the same server. You have to change the environment variable when you log into svrmgrl to access the databases. Other than that it shouldn't be any problem. (Provided you have enough system resources)

Oracle instance crashing when enabling use_indirect_data_buffers=true
I have a Windows 2003 EE server (32bit) with 16GB of ram hosting a 10.2.0.2 Oracle server which is used to support a commercial software package (arcsight). I'm trying to get the Oracle backend to leverage the available system memory. I've read 50-60 different articles and posts regarding AWE and Oracle. I have successfully tuned the userva parameter in order to get the server to boot stable with the /3gb boot parameter. I've gotten to the point that the oracle instance will start up, but within about 30-60 seconds the instance will crash. Below is the information I believe that is relevant:

I appreciate any input on what to look at to further isolate this issue. I'd run into many other issues along the way (setting AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY to a proper size, setting db_block_buffers to a proper value, etc) that various forum searches helped resolve but I've not been able to find anything related to the errors I'm getting now. If I set use_indirect_data_buffers=false and tune back the db_block_buffers, the instance starts without any problems. Its just when I try and enable the use of AWE that I'm having a problem.
NickJust wanted to close out this tread in case anyone else runs into a similar problem. Turns out we ran into a bug documented in the below linked article (we're using AMD processors). Essentially needed to disable NUMA.
http://blog.csdn.net/orapeasant/archive/2007/06/05/1639532.aspx
excerpt ....
But please be aware of Bug 4494543 - affecting 10g and fixed in Oracle 11.0 ......
ORA-7445: CORE DUMP [ACCESS_VIOLATION] WITH USE_INDIRECT_DATA_BUFFERS=TRUE
Rediscovery Information:
1) Using 32-Bit Oracle on a 32-Bit Windows 2003 server running on an AMD Opteron 64-Bit chip.
2) You have set use_indirect_data_buffers=true in init.ora
Workaround: Basically disable NUMA feature on 32-Bit platform :-
1) Set ENABLENUMA = FALSE in Windows registry for the Oracle Home.
2) Set enableNUMA_optimizations = FALSE (init.ora)
Thanks for the help. We'll see if access to the extra memory will be useful or not .....

Problems While Creating A Oracle Instance In Windows 7
Hi All,
I am trying to create a primary standby configuration in windows 7. When I am trying to create a oracle instance using oradim I am facing the below issue:-
I am using Oracle version 10.2.0.1.0.
C:\>ORADIM -new -sid STDBY -SRVC OracleServiceSTDBY -STARTMODE auto -SRVCSTART s

DIM-00003: An argument is missing for the parameter.
I am not sure which parameter is missing. can you help me in this..
Regards,
ArijitHi Abdul,
I did the same thing mentioned by you but now I am facing some different error:-
C:\>ORADIM -edit -sid STDBY -STARTMODE manual -SRVCSTART system -pfile E:\Arijit
\oraclestby\dbs\initstdby.ora;
DIM-00077: Failed to change service configuration.
O/S-Error: (OS 5) Access is denied.
When I tried the first step I am getting another error:-
C:\>oradim -edit -sid STDBY -startmode auto -srvcstart system
DIM-00077: Failed to change service configuration.
O/S-Error: (OS 5) Access is denied.
Please suggest.

What I can guess is this all is happenning because system datafile OS block got currupted....is it so or some other reason?....and how to resolve this issue?Hi,
Since it is system tablespace, you can't open the DB. If you can't open the db you can't use dbms_repair. Also DBV doesn't change the content of the file so that also not going to help.
So only open left is to do point in time recovery.

VSS-00011: Connection to database instance <instance_name> failed.
Cause : The user account in which the Oracle VSS Writer Service is running does not have the DBA privileges to log in to the Oracle instance.
Action : Run the Oracle VSS Writer Service in a user account that can connect to the Oracle instance with DBA privileges.
I have assigned ora_dba group to the user that runs the Oracle VSS Writer Service which is the only Oracle solution but still getting
the above error. Was advised to raise the issue here that it is an OS issue. Pls helpThe user account cannot access Oracle Database instance. And also how do you temporarily disable security software on the server.
Have you checked what I already asked for? "Try using the user account and access the Database Instance.
That will let you see if the problem is with the user account permissions or not."
If this does not help then you can contact Oracle as suggested by Dave.

Question on Oratab file when installing two Oracle instances in one machine
OS: AIX 5.3
DB version:10.2.0.1.0
I already have an instance of version 9.2 which is very important and which we don't want to upgrade and we wanted another test(unimportant) oracle instance called testdb_10gR2 of version 10.2.0.1.0 on the same machine.
So i installed 10.2.0.1.0 on a different ORACLE_HOME .Installation of the new 10.2.0.1.0 (testdb_10gR2) went ahead successfully and at the last step i have to log in as root and execute root.sh
I entered 'n' for the options "dbhome", "oraenv", "coraenv" as shown below so that the settings for our 9.2 instance (which is very important) will remain intact.
What would have happened if i entered 'y' ie. Overwrite ?
The following environment variables are set as:
ORACLE_OWNER= oracle
ORACLE_HOME= /u04/testdb_10gR2_Feb2009
Enter the full pathname of the local bin directory: [/usr/local/bin]: /usr/local/bin
The file "dbhome" already exists in /usr/local/bin. Overwrite it? (y/n) [n]: n
The file "oraenv" already exists in /usr/local/bin. Overwrite it? (y/n) [n]: n
The file "coraenv" already exists in /usr/local/bin. Overwrite it? (y/n) [n]: n
Entries will be added to the /etc/oratab file as needed by
Database Configuration Assistant when a database is created
Finished running generic part of root.sh script.
Now product-specific root actions will be performed.
During installEdited by: Citizen_2 on Jan 30, 2009 5:05 AM'dbhome','oraenv','coraenv' are sripts used to set a proper environment (see the descriptions at the beginning of these scripts). These scripts rely on oratab (they check for existing SIDs), but answering 'Y' does not mean you will modifiy an existing oratab.
I think these scripts change rarely, so it's very likely overwriting the existing 9i scripts with the 10g scripts changes nothing. To be honest I don't use the scripts , so in my case 'Y' or 'N' doesn't matter. But important is you don't have to worry about 'oratab'.

Auto start Oracle instance in linux
Can I configure oracle to auto start an oracle instance in linux environment ?
Here are the steps to enable the oracle service start automatically during the system boot
Login as root in Linux box to execute the following steps
1. the flag set to Y in /etc/oratab file with the respective instance
2. Copy the oracle script in /etc/init.d folder
3. change the permission < chmod 755 <script filename>
4. add the service <chkconfig --add <script filename>
5 Put the service auto on <chkconfig <script filename> on >
6. To verify the oracle service startup automatic < service <script filename> stop > < service <script filename> start >

Establish SSL connection to Oracle Instance w/JDBC Thin Client
Hello all,
I am writing a monitoring utility that will allow me to establish connections to both Oracle instances and LDAP repositories and query them to determine that they are up and running. My utility consists of a number of objects that handle connections to the LDAP and Oracle instances. I need to be able to do SSL and non-SSL connections to said instances.
My issue is this: I am able to do SSL and non-SSL to LDAP, and non-SSL to an Oracle instance. I am having problems, though, establishing an SSL connection to an Oracle instance (I am using the thin client). Whenever I try, a SQLException is thrown that states: "Encountered a problem with the secret store. Check the wallet location for the presense of an <b>open</b> wallet (cwallet.sso) and ensure that the wallet contains the correct credentials..."
Ok, a little background for those who may need it. Oracle uses a wallet to hold certs that allow SSL connections. I have a wallet on my box, and, from the command line, I am able to sqlplus into and tnsping the appropriate Oracle instances, so I know it is setup properly. The inability to connect only occurs in my code. My code looks like this:
DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
Security.addProvider(new oracle.security.pki.OraclePKIProvider());
/*Setup connection properties*/
String connectionString = "testbox01:1000:ssl_instances_name";
String userName = "userName";
String pwd = "password";
Properties props = new Properties();
props.put("oracle.net.ssl_version", 3.0");
props.put("oracle.net.wallet_location", "SOURCE=(METHOD=file)(METHOD_DATA=(DIRECTORY=c:\\wallet)))");
props.put("oracle.net.ssl_cipher_suites", "ssl cipher suites");
props.put("oracle.net.ssl_server_dn_match", "FALSE");
props.put("oracle.net.ssl_client_authentication", "true");
/*Do connection and return connection object
OracleDataSource ods = new OracleDataSource();
ods.setUser(userName);
ods.setPassword(pwd);
ods.setUrl("jdbc:oracle:thin:@" + connectionString);
ods.setConnectionProperties(props);
Connection conn = ods.getConnection(); <---This is where code errors out with SQLException described above.
return conn;
And that's pretty much it. Anyone have any ideas?Ok, that looked horrible. Let's try this again:<br>
