More Usable Image Detail - Adobe Camera Raw Beats Canon DPP

Let me start with a question:
When you do your raw conversions, do you convert to an image that's got the same number of pixels as your camera's imager has photosites?
If so, why?  I ask because I'm convinced that - with modern software - to get the most usable detail out of a raw image one should convert directly to an upsampled size.  You might think that in trying to get "more megapixels from the same camera" I'm just fooling myself, but again and again when I look at the problem of maximizing the output from existing equipment (which, face it, is everyone's goal, no matter how good the equipment) I keep seeing that there is an advantage to selecting from the upsampled resolutions in Camera Raw.  Of course, the computer must be up to handling the additional data.
In actual terms, my Canon 40D has 3888 x 2592 photosites (plus some guard pixels around the edges) making 10 megapixels, yet I find converting to 6144 x 4096 (25 megapixels) to be advantageous - ESPECIALLY when I use my sharpest lenses.
I happened to be doing a head to head comparison between Canon 50mm f/1.8 and Canon 50mm f/1.4 lenses, and the difference between the two appeared pretty subtle - UNTIL I converted to the aforementioned upsampled resolution, and then the more expensive f/1.4 lens clearly stepped ahead.  There was simply extra detail I hadn't been seeing clearly at the native pixel size of the camera's imager, but which stood out clearly at the larger size.
This reaffirmed my previous observations that conversion directly to upsampled resolutions in Camera Raw brings out additional detail.
This screen grab shows part of the converted image, as produced by DPP and Camera Raw, both at 6144 x 4096 pixels as produced by the converters and displayed at 100% zoom.  Note that the detail (e.g., in the terrain) is finer and more real looking in the Camera Raw conversion, while the DPP image seems to have more sharpening artifacts.

I had to read that twice to make sure I knew what it meant!
What I am trying to say is to show the results of both converters in the native resolution and the 25M upsampled.resolution.
On another note, I have been playing around with the details of noise and sharpening in DXO and ACR, looking at 300%. It's both good and bad. If you are willing to mess with the ACR settings at 300%, then ACR has the edge, even comparing to manual tweaks in DXO. They do correctly optimize, however, except that point isn't as good as ACR. The depressing point is all the tweaking to do on an individual basis. Can you imagine tweaking 100 or more images that way? Then you get to move over to other corrections.
We are splitting tiny hairs here, and the bottom line is if you are going to make 30x40 prints from a given file, you may want to use ACR all the way and bite the bullet. If the Auto corrections for the lens employed in ACR is well done, as it seems for my Nikon 18 to 105, the workload is relaxed.
Finally, the ACR corrected image will need final sharpening at higher values than the DXO, and at that point, they come together a bit more...sharpening anomalys and all that.
The final fuss levels takes me back to my 8x10 days, where these kinds of determinations (max quality level) takes place under the focusing cloth, and deliberate selection of POV is carefully considered. Today, it's in front of the monitor. But instead of a few sheets of film to process, we have 100's to do.
I thoroughly enjoy working with the files on the computer, but not so much having to deal with less than optimum technical details right out of the camera. Barrel distortion? Hasselblad was not satisfied with the "normal" corrections in it's general optics, which were damn good, so came out with the 100mm Planar that was awesome! All they gave up was max aperture, and picked the FL at a value that provided for the best corrections. So I recall anyway.
Why should we be required to do these kinds of post corrections? Digital editing involves throwing away information, and ther appears to be enough so that correcting these deficiencies still gives a wonderful image. Just imagine what it would be like if all you need to do is to open the file and adjust values to taste, with all that information density available exclusively for that part. You don't even need to use a focusing magnifier!

  • Why do my raws look different when I view them in Adobe Bridge/Adobe Camera Raw and Canons Digital P

    Hello all,
    I am sorta new to taking Raw photographs and I have been been using Adobe Bridge/Camera Raw to edit. When I take my photos (I am using a Canon t2i) I have it set to save a raw and a jpg. When I view these images in Adobe Bridge/Camera Raw I notice a clear difference in the jpg and raw (I understand the whole concept behind raw vs. jpg. so im not questioning why one looks different) It is obvious all the adjustments that were applied to my jpg. vs the natural raw.  My question is: When I view the same two images in the software that came with my camera, canon digital photo professionals, the canon and raw look almost identical.... My assumption is that canon is applying the same "adjustments" to my raw as it did to the jpgs?  Has anyone used these two programs and noticed this?

    Can't say I'm an expert on DPP myself either.  I've only run it a few times myself.
    If you're seeing Photoshop freeze just by looking at the File Info tab, that's certainly not expected and you should start a tread specifically to discuss that.  The forum may be able to help you get that working.
    I happen to like the color my camera delivers in its embedded JPEGs (which I use to quickly review shots via IrfanView).  Starting with that color in Camera Raw by default just feels very natural and integrated.
    Without a specific custom profile to help you with the task, here's my suggestions for the next best thing:
    1.  Take an image with a range of different colors in it.
    2.  Open the embedded JPEG also using whatever means you have to do so.
    3.  Open it also in Camera Raw and make sure you're using the Camera Raw default parameters.
    4.  Go into the Camera Calibration tab (little camera icon), and choose the Camera Standard profile as provided by Adobe.
    5.  Tweak the various sliders so as to match the color between what you're seeing in the JPEG and Camera Raw.
    6.  Save new Camera Raw defaults.
    Some notes:
    Make sure you leave the White Balance on As Shot, since storing a specific white balance is probably not going to be helpful.
    Test your settings and repeat the above to tweak them as needed using other images.
    Keep in mind that not every application does proper color-management.  IrfanView can be set up to do so, and I don't recall whether you have to tweak a default setting to make it do that or not (it's been a while).

  • When opening an image in Adobe Camera Raw in CC, the image is solid red

    The image is solid red and not my image. I have been working on an image and several layers of work done on things like white balance, color cast.  When I add a CAL I cant get to ACR at all. If im on the previous CAL I can open in ACR but with the red image.   I am on a Mac 10.8.5 Have the latest version of CC installed. Help!
    An hour later I went back and on a copy of my Background layer, I opened the image in ACR.  So what are the parameters of ACR that I don't understand?

    You can't do that in ACR, but you can if you open it in Photoshop and use the crop tool there.

    Er...I don't really think that solves anything. But you may succeed in temporarily hiding the problem.
    You do have PS color management policies at "preserve embedded profiles", right? As long as you do, there's no particular need to synchronize PS / ACR / Lr color settings, any source profile should be honored anywhere.
    The reason Adobe RGB works as monitor profile is because it's a known good, not corrupt, profile - not because it's the same as a document profile somewhere. Those two are not supposed to be the same. But for a wide gamut monitor it's close enough to work for diagnostic purposes.
    NEC Spectraview is a solid and reliable calibrator. But that doesn't help if the OS doesn't load the profile correctly.
    One gotcha with Spectraview (and Eizo Colornavigator) is that it's so easy to switch calibration target and the associated monitor profile. That's fine, but you also need to relaunch any color managed application that happens to use the monitor profile. That profile is loaded by the application at startup, and it will continue to use it even if it's changed at system level.

  • Aperture vs Adobe Camera Raw

    Hey,
    So, lately I've been shooting in RAW and have finally found some time to process some of the images. I am a Mac user, so I have the option of using either Aperture, or Adobe Camera Raw (Lightroom). Can someone please explain to me the main difference between the two programs, in terms of their ability to retouch/edit RAW images. I've had experience with Adobe Camera Raw (through photoshop cs6) and believe it is an excellent piece of software, does Aperture provide the same kind and quality of tools. The reason I am asking is because while I need a program to help process the RAW files, I also want to organize them in a library where I can see my edits. I am currently using iPhoto and I like the way it works.
    So to summarize the question, is aperture as good at processing/editing RAW images as Adobe Camera Raw? If not, why, what are the differences?

    Much of the difference between the two has to do with the way brushes work (for local adjustments) and some features.
    Brushes:
    In ACR, the adjustment brush works as a multi-parameter brush where you brush in strokes and can adjust quite a few parameters after adding the brush stroke (e.g., exposure, highlights, shadows, sharpening, noise reduction, clarity, saturation, etc.). ACR adds a 'pin' for each new adjustment which can then be selected to change the parameters of that adjustment.
    In Aperture, you use what is called a 'brick' which is a panel dedicated to the type of adjustment (e.g., enhance, highlights & shadows, edge sharpen, noise reduction, etc.). In this case, you use each 'brick' (or panel) to change the brushed in parameters for that specific type of adjustment.
    In summary; you can add or change more parameters in ACR with one brushed adjustment than you can in Aperture, but both can add or change the same parameters (with the exception of exposure, which Aperture doesn't currently do as a local brushable adjustment).
    ACR has arguably better sharpening and noise reduction control. ACR also has a gradient tool and lens distortion correction which Aperture currently lacks.
    I do find that brush speed is about the same with a lot of adjustments added, with Aperture getting better marks overall.
    All that said, I would be surprised if Aperture didn't receive some of the tools it currently lacks in the future.
    As far as RAW decoding goes, Aperture relies on the OS X camera RAW compatibility feature to render RAW files, so you will already have a sense of what that default render is like with iPhoto and Preview. Aperture can alter those parameters either as a RAW fine tuning preset that you create or with the adjustment bricks.
    FWIW, I have been using Adobe ACR at work (on Windows) since it's inception; and while I like the results with some images with regards to highlights, shadows, sharpening and noise, I can get there faster with Aperture. I also don't agree with Adobe's new rental policy for the CC line, so won't be investing in their products anymore. I quite like the 'App Store' paradigm.

  • Aperture and Adobe Camera Raw

    I would love to set up Aperture to allow me to edit images in Adobe Camera Raw.  I can open images from Aperture in Adobe Camera Raw by setting Adobe Bridge as my external editor, but none of the adjustments are saved in Aperture.  From Bridge, I can also save the file as a dng file that Aperture should be able to read and save it in the numbered folder where Aperture placed the original raw image, but the saved dng file doesn't show up in Aperture.  Apparently Aperture can't see any images in its own folders if it didn't place them there.
    I also tried making my adjustments in Adobe Raw, saving it as a dng file and then importing it into Aperture.  This is not ideal, as it would be convenient to do the Adobe Raw adjustments from within Aperture, but it does allow me to import the edits into Aperture.  Aperture does something odd in this case.  When I open the imported dng image in Aperture, at first it displays it with the edits I made in Adobe Raw but after a few seconds reverts to the originla raw image.  I can't figure out how to recover the adjustments.
    Can anyone fill me in on the nuances of Aperture in this workflow?  Is there some way I can at least make the raw edits in Adobe Raw and make them available in Aperture.
    Some of this may be my ignorance.  For some reason, I have never been able to fully grok the whole version/master process in Aperture, never quite sure how to move between versions and masters.  I suspect that some of my issues with the imported dng files is a version/master thing that I am not understanding.
    I'm beginning to wish that I had set Aperture up to use external folders rather than place my files in the Aperture database.  I think if I had done this it might have eased my current issues.
    Is there any way to export an Aperture database so it exports the images into folders that correspond to projects and folders in Aperture?  I suspect not, but . . . one can wish.
    Any help with any of this would be greatly appreciated.

    In the Adobe Camera Raw preferences, there is a section called: 'DNG File Handling'. You can (and may already have) select the option 'Update embedded JPG previews' and use the drop down to select either Medium or Full Size. The result should be (in Bridge at least) that adjustments you make in ACR and then either click 'Done' to save to the .XMP file inside the DNG file or click 'Open' to launch and render the image in PS for further work.
    The result should be an updated embedded JPEG inside the DNG file that can be used by any program that can read DNG and is set to use an embedded JPEG.
    In testing on my machine a couple of years ago on Snow Leopard, the OS X included program Preview did not show the updated previews though. It only displayed the original RAW data. I assumed it either was not set to show any embedded JPEG preview, or was simply not designed to be compatible in that way. Preview uses the same digital camera RAW compatibility function of OS X that Aperture uses. So it did not surprise me to see that it was not working in Aperture at that time. This was either a later version of AP 2 or early version of AP3, but I can't remember for sure.
    It was my understanding that the purpose and function of dng files is so that raw edits made by any software could be accessed cross platform through the open source dng file.  If Aperture simply chooses to ignore that data, it defeats the purpose of dng.
    My understanding of DNG is that it is an archive type file made of (1) a RAW conversion which holds the decoded RAW data, (2) any .XMP file that has been created by the decoding software as well as; (3) ITPC and EXIF metadata and some other info such as ICC profiles and the JPEG preview. You can also opt to include the original RAW file.
    I don't know the extent to which Aperture is designed to support the DNG file though. Does it handle it like a PSD file where it retains the full file content, but only supports displaying it in a limited fashion (e.g., no transparency)? Or should it actually read the .XMP data file and render it based on that info? I don't think this is the case as the .XMP data that pertains to adjustments made by another RAW decoder doesn't seem to be compatilble with the way Aperture is handling adjustments.
    You could certainly test the embedded JPEG in a DNG file by making and saving some changes to the copy of a file in Finder and then comparing the original DNG to the adjusted one using the Preview program. If the changes are not shown, then the issue (or lack of one depending on Apple's point of view) is with the OS X digital camera RAW compatibility function (which they update for new digital cameras periodically).
    If Preview does show the changes, you could then import both the original and adjusted DNG into an Aperture library (even a new test library) and see if it displays the differences. If it does, then this would point to an issue with sending a file from inside Aperture to an external program and then saving back (assuming this still fails to work as you expect).
    Sorry I don't have more. I decided not to go with DNG and just archive with RAW and JPEG depending on what I end up wanting to do with the images.

  • Camera Calibration Profile in Adobe Camera Raw 5.3

    I'm trying to figure out the Camera Calibration tab in Adobe Camera Raw 5.3.  It seems that every picture I open selects a different Camera Profile in the drop down menu.  How do I know which one is appropriate for my camera (Nikon D40X)?  Or, do you just select whichever one looks the best to you on the drop down menu for that picture?  Or, does it matter that much at all since they never had this tab in there before?

    I'm not sure I understand...when I open an image in Adobe Camera Raw 5.3, does it open with a different "default" for each picture?  Or should I be using a specific profile from the pulldown menu, e.g., ACR. 4.4 or "Standard Adobe" or should I try them all and see which one I like?

  • Does Camera Raw support Canon G9?

    Appreciate any help with this problem: My new Canon G9 raw files (.CR2's) are not recognized by Bridge 4.1.
    Windows XP, SP2
    Just installed CS3 Master Collection including:
    Bridge 2.1.0.100
    Camera Raw 4.1
    Bridge wont show Raw thumbs -- only "CR2" icons.
    Have downloaded and replaced Camera Raw 4.1 Plug-In (with "Camera Raw.8bi) into correct folder several times:
    Common Files/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats" per Adobe instructions
    Reopened Bridge and it still wont show images -- only "CR2" icons. Note that .JPG's are opened in Camera Raw.
    Went to tools and Purged the Cache - no change
    When I double click on the preview, Photoshop opens with a message:
    "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"
    I really need help on this one.

    The G9 support is unofficial, that's true.
    However ACR is not designed to emulate the results from the Canon in-camera conversion at all, and the defaults are nothing but a starting point.
    This has been covered ad nauseam here. Please do a forum search.
    Camera manufacturers, Canon and Nikon in particular, perform in-camera RAW to JPEG conversions designed to generate the over-saturated, over-contrasty and over-sharpened images that appeal to most amateurs.
    Their stand-alone RAW conversion software also performs the same conversion to your RAW images.
    Noise is also hidden by compressing the shadows so you don't see much of the noise inherent in the image.
    Adobe Camera Raw, ACR, on the other hand, comes with default settings designed to give you the most detail possible (even if this sometimes means revealing some of the noise hidden by the camera manufacturers in their RAW conversion software), as well as the most natural images.
    That being said, you can calibrate your camera to ACR and come up with your own settings to produce exactly what you want, including the JPEG-look of the camera manufacturer, and save that as your profile.
    The key is to learn how to use ACR properly and to calibrate your camera to ACR.

    The ACR defaults are nothing more than a suggested starting point.
    The color temperature won't necessarily match either.

    Close and restart Photoshop if you have not already done so.
    In Photoshop, go to the Help - About Plug-in... menu then choose Camera Raw.  What version does it say there?

    Facebook used to but now I believe it includes it. I also read that possible facebook adds metadata to images uploaded to albums but not wall posts. Regardless, what metadata field has to be filled in?

  • Adobe Camera RAW (All Versions) Import Canon .CR2 / RAW images with an orange / green color cast.

    All versions of Adobe Camera RAW including the latest 7.3 import .CR2 images with a greenish / orange color cast.
    Tested on 7D, and 5D III
    Makes Hardwood floors, and flesh tones look abysmal.
    Canon's Digital Photo Professional renders the colors fine, as does ACDSee 5.0 Pro (when viewing)  Exporting from ACDSee however is another story as things look even worse than Adobe.  DPP can export perfectly.
    Changes to Color Gammut / Space have little or no effect.
