Motion Effects won't transfer to FCP

I added the smoke dispersion effect in Motion to text that I set up. Unfortunately, when I imported the file into FCP, the smoke vanished. Please help!

First, try rendering the movie (or a short piece of it) out of Motion and see what happens.
Smoke is not very dense, pixel-wise. So it might actually be there, you just can't perceive it.

  • My slow motion effect won't work... HELP ME!!!

I really need some help here. The original version of Imovie that came with my OS X worked great when it came to adding the effect of slow motion with the little bar at the bottom. I just recently purchased the Ilife 05 package and was all excited to get editing... but now I can't get the slow motion effect to work at all. It does all the rendering of the clip but the effect does not appear in my time line!!! What is wrong??? Please help me!!!

    Hey Karsten... I'm back again...
Yes you guessed correctly... but I never want to see another pc in my life. Now about my prob... I did as you said and still nada. I wish the upgraded version in the Ilife 05 package still had the slow motion control at the bottom of the main screen like in the prior version, but they have taken it off of the main screen and placed in the special effects folder as "fast/slow/reverse". and it is here that it slows the clip down in the preview and renders the clip with the red bar on the main time line. But the red bar on the bottom of the clip in the time line doesn't move and ofcourse the clip is not put in slow motion.
My brother is quite savy with Mac as well and he can't figure it out either. What do you think???

  • How to apply a "motion" effect to an entire group of images in FCP

I have Final Cut Studio and I'm creating a time-lapse video right now out of about 3,000 high-resolution JPEG images. I've figured out how to import them in to my bin at a default length of 1 frame per image and then drag them in to the timeline (30 images per second).
I now need to make them all larger by about 60% (they automatically imported into the timeline at 45%). I also need to readjust their "center" location and "rotation" throughout the video as the camera was running for several months and got bumped here and there. So I need to zoom in (to create a buffer on the border of the images) and then rotate, tilt, and pan the frame in various places until the video is nice and smooth and consistent throughout.
My question is, how do I apply motion effects to the entire track or to hundreds of images in one shot? I'll die of old age if I have to manually apply, re-apply, and re-re-apply the settings to 3000 individual images. I've been searching for an answer to this for a while but haven't found any articles so I thought I'd post it as a question.
Any ideas would be HUGELY appreciated!
    Thanks

Wow, thank you everyone for giving me so many ideas.
Tom, I never knew about the "Paste Attributes" button... and I've been using FCP for 4 years, how embarrassing. But dang, what a COOL feature! I'll be using that a lot in the future.
Kevin, this Nest feature is PERFECT! That was literally what I was looking for really (a way to keep the image high quality as I zoom in and tinker and what not).
David, the images are 1600 X 1200 @ 180 DPI. That was actually one of the lower settings in GbTimelapse, but as long as I can use the padding to crop and zoom, I'm happy. Thanks for the info though.
And Andy, thanks for the tip about Motion. Normally I only use Motion for titles but I know I really should play with it more as I'm aware of it's ability to do so much more than that.
Thanks again to everyone. Seriously, 10 minutes after I asked this question and I had 3 different, REALLY good solutions to a problem that I thought would be incredibly hard to solve, haha
    Cheers guys,
    Chris

FCP effects won't unpack from files. Can access them from menu bar but on effects tab

I think you meant but "not" on effects tab. Were you able to before? Try trashing your preference files. you can do this by hand or use the free program, Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion.

  • ERROR: red-white checkered box when exporting Motion effects from FCP-COMPR

Hello, im having an export issue with motion clips inside Final Cut Pro 2.
I exported the shortfilm using quicktime-same as project.
Suddently in the exported file i get red and white chekered box where the motion effect takes place.
Im using chroma to replace images from a tv set, i use the same effect around 15 times across the shortfilm, but only in two places it shows this red & white box...
Does anyone knows why this happens, how can i solve it?
I tird to export using compressor, but in compressor´s preview window, it shows exactly this red and white box everytime my motion efects apears.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!
Thanks a lot for any suggestion

  • Carrying motion effects from 30fps to 24fps project for online

I'm working on this program where they transfered their dailies footage to HDCam, then they downconvert their dailies to DVCam letterbox with burns. There are some effects (split screen, crop) on the motion window and now it's time for the online and the effects look all out of place. The cuts are at the right spots, but the placement in the screen is out of whack. They are all on top of one another and squezzed in.
Let me explain the shot: 3 people all talking but each one of them is in a diferent split screen, then all 3 of them show up. 1 person occupies the top left, the other one the top right and the last one at the bottom of the screen.
The DVCam downconvert of the masters are lettebox with burns, and it seems that the effects won't apply to the HD online since all the effects look squeezed together (like it was made for 4:3 instead of 16:9)
Now, my question, does anyone know how to transfer the effects from a 30 fps project to a 24 fps project? More specifically, how do I transfer the effects made on the "motion" windows to work on an 23.98 timeline.
Thank you in advance for your help.

The red & white checkerbox means that in the rendering process it cannot find the media.
Strange why this happens on only two instances though
Have you tried trashing your prefs and repairing permissions.
Could you render directly out of Motion and then drop the movie into FCP?

  • Editing stills with motion effects, performance questions.

I am editing a video in FCE that consists solely of still photos.
I am creating motion effects (pans and pullbacks, etc) and dissolve
transitions, and overlaying titles. It will be played back on dvd
on a 16:9 monitor (standard dvd,not blueray hi-def). Some questions:
What is the FCE best setup to use for best image quality: DV-NTSC?
DV-NTSC Anamorphic? or is it HDV-1080i or 720p30 even though it
won't be played back as hi-def?
How do best avoid squiggly line problem with pan moves etc?
On my G-5, 2gb RAM, single processor machine I seem to be having
performance problems with playback: slow to render, dropping frames, etc
    Thanks for any help!

Excellent summary MacDLS, thanks for the contribution.
A lot of the photos I've taken on my camera are 3072 X 2304 (resolution 314) .jpegs.
I've heard it said that jpegs aren't the best format for Motion, since they're a compressed format.
If you're happy with the jpegs, Motion will be, too.
My typical project could either be 1280 X 720 or SD. I like the photo to be a lot bigger than the
canvas size, so I have room to do crops and grows, and the like. Is there a maximum dimension
that I should be working with?
Yes and no. Your originals are 7,000,000 pixels. Your video working space only displays about 950,000 pixels at any single instant.
At that project size, your stills are almost 700% larger than the frame. This will tax any system as you add more stills. 150% is more realistic in terms of processing overhead and I try to only import HUGE images that I know are going to be tightly cropped by zooming in. You need to understand that an 1300x800 section of your original is as far as you can zoom in , the pixels will be 100% in size. If you zoom in further, all you get are bigger pixels. The trade off you make is that if you zoom way out on your source image, you've thrown away 75% of its content to scale it to fit the video format; you lose much much more if you go to SD.
Finally, the manual says that d.p.i doesn't matter in Motion, so does this mean that it's worth
actually exporting my 300 dpi photos to 72 dpi before working with them in Motion?
Don't confuse DPI with resolution. Your video screen will only show about 900,000 pixels in HD and about 350,000 pixels in SD totally regardless of how many pixels there are in your original.

  • Slow motion effect

I was wondering how to get that slow motion effect that is so commonly used i music videos. I have a canon xha1 that shoots 60i and 50i. To achieve this effect do I do it all in FCP, or is a combination of having the fps high and then the sequence at 24. I could do it in FCP, but it doesn't look clean. If any body has anysuggestions, thankyou. peace. E.

Final Cut Pro can do slow motion with or without frame blending. In both instances you are creating duplicates of frames in order to create a slow motion effect. These look okay in video but with the effects you are talking about are done with large production values where the shots are done with slow mags where the film is running at a high rate of speed to get more frames in an action. There are cameras today that allow you to over and under crank footage but mainly they are tapeless formats where you are recording to hard drives, disks or cards.
you might want to investigate After Effects version 7 or later where it does time warping where individual pixels are blended rather than an entire frame like in Final Cut.

  • Effective way from AE to FCP

Is there any effective way to transfer file from FCP to AE or AE to FCP beside export a quicktime to AE and render back to FCP? tjx

Is there any effective way to transfer file from FCP to AE or AE to FCP beside export a quicktime to AE and render back to FCP?< </div>
    Automatic Duck.< </div>
While true, AutoDuck is expensive overkill for most of us. I've been using After Effects with Media 100 and FCP for more than a decade without ever needing a tool like AD (although M100 did have something similar built right into it, I just didn't use it very often).
Moving FCP sequences in and out of AE requires sophisticated tools like AutmaticDuck. Moving a simple video file in and out of AE is a drag and drop situation. Mostly.
Try telling us what you're trying to do.

  • How to achieve the distort motion effect ala Final Cut Pro in Premiere CS4?

    Newbie here.
I have just recently started with video editing. In Final Cut Pro I have the option to distort a still image in the motion/effects panel. In premiere cs4 I only find the option to scale it up/down without the option to individually distort the four corners. Does anyone know how this can be done in premiere cs4?
The effect i am going for is the same as in Apples presentation of iPad. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/specialevent0110/
I have an presentation wich I need to insert all the slides from the powerpoint presentation in the video.
Any help would be appreciated. ( I have searched around for an solution, but without results)
    Regards T

Here is a resource, that deserves a bookmark, the PrPro-Wiki. Plenty of great FAQ articles and tutorials.
I see the "Distort" part of the Effect in FCP, but the "Motion" aspect was throwing me. I kept thinking Posterize Time, and that is anything but what you were looking for. That's why I was going to head to Google for the FCP Help files, or similar.
    Good luck,

  • Final Cut Server Metadata will not transfer to FCP

    Hello,
I am new to Final Cut Server and am encountering a couple of issues. A big one is that the metadata from quicktime clips stored into final cut server will not transfer when I put these same clips from the server into FCP.
Any idea why? The metadata is with each asset in the server but won't transfer when the clips are transferred into FCP.
    Any suggestion would be great!
    Thanks.

FCP only supports specific types of metadata.  What specific metadata fields are you looking to export with the clip?  Also, "how" are you getting these clips from FCSvr to FCP?

  • How to properly timewarp 59.94 footage for slow motion effect for 29.97 output

I have footage filmed in 59.94 that I want to use for slow motion effects and output to 29.97. Using timewarp I seem to get duplicate frames at times. What would the best workflow to accomplish the cleanest result? I've tried interpreting the footage at 29.97 and keeping it at its native 59.94. At this point I feel like I'm just confusing myself further by just trying random things. Thanks!

Always interpret footage as what it really is. If it is really 59.94 progressive then that's what it should be interpreted as. It will play at the right speed in any comp of any frame rate. IOW, if the footage is 10 seconds and you put it in a 99fps comp and play it back at full frame rate the clip will still be 10 seconds long. If you put it in a comp that's 15 frames per second, the clip will still be 10 seconds long.
    Make sure you understand that.
There is a chance, and a good chance, that your footage is actually full frame 59.94 fps video. That's why I suggested putting it in a comp that's also 59.94 fps and checking for duplicate frames.
There is also a chance that your footage is actually 29.97 fps interlaced. If you separate fields and look at the footage in a 59.94 fps comp you won't see any duplicate frames.
To change the speed of the clip you just need to apply Time Remapping, Time Warp, or any of the other Time Time tools in AE. It doesn't make any difference what the frame rate of the composition is, you'll be changing the length of the clip.
To keep from creating duplicate frames you either need software that interprets the new, extra frames or you need to use an exact whole number multiple of the frame rate for rendering.
Where did you get the footage? What Camera? What are you trying to do with it? What is the final destination (delivery) for your project.

  • Rendered motion effect looks very soft.

I am hoping someone can explain what is happening. I have a shot that looks great, and when I apply a reverse motion effect, it looks fine, but when I render the entire timeline, the shot looks really soft.
I can lay off to tape without rendering this, but if I export my timelines using compressor, the resulting compression has the same soft shot problem. I am rendering in high precision YUV and motion rendering is set to best.
The quality is not acceptable on that shot, it's night and day from its rendered and non-rendered state, almost like it's being de-interlaced and softened.
    SD timeline, Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2.

I'll give you a head's start. Select clip in FCP. Right-click and choose Send/To Motion Project.
In Motion, click on the Properties tab in the inspector for your clip. Twirl open the Timing parameter. There you'll see everything you need for a speed effect. Click the "reverse" button to have the clip go in reverse. Under Frame Blending choose Optical Flow. I don't find it necessary unless you're slo-moing the clip though.
    Piece of cake.
When you use Optical Flow, Motion has to analyze the entire captured media (I'm sure you know this from Shake). Just a caveat.

I have rented 2 movies the past 9 days and they won't transfer to my iPad (first generation).  Get the same error message that says they cannot be played on my iPad.  I haven't watched either movie and this is the first time I have ever had this happen after several successful movie rentals and transfers.

When you have a query please post the feed URL rather than its contents. For the record, yours is at
    http://www.honywoodschool.com/podcast/44986
I don't have an iPad to test this, so I can only refer you to Apple's Podcast Tech Specs page:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html#formattingvideo
This says that the maximum video size for an iPad is 1024x768 - your latest episode is 1280x720.
    Slightly confusingly, it also says
'iPad & Apple TV can play the following video formats:
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format'
which suggests that mp4 files are even more limited.
Incidentally your feed gives this URL for the media file:
    http://www.honywoodschool.com/user/59/133934.mp4
However when downloaded this produces a file called 'howtosetupappeid.mp4' so soe sort of redirect appears to be in place, and these can sometimes cause trouble. It's better to link directly to the file - it's possible that the iPad doesn't handle the redirect.
That's all I can suggest: if it still doesn't cover the problem I can only refer you to the iPad forum where someone may be able to actually try your podcast and offer a comment.

  • Motion effect bad linking

here is the problem. in my sequence, a day or so after cutting with it, any motion effect i use to slow down a clip comes back as the entire master clip sped up as fast as can be. so instead of having my cut-in slow mo clip, i have the same size clip, only the entire master clip sped up to fit. its the same on all the old duplicate sequences as well. never seen this before, not sure what to do. any help is appreciated. dh

goto sequence settings and set the field dominance to none. Maybe you won't have to do that.
