Mount UFS disk not working

Hi,
I am new to Solaris so this may be something simple I have missed. I am having troubles mounting a MO (magnetic Optical) disk on my Solaris 9 X 86 workstation.. I have just loaded the Solaris operating system, in the workstation I have an internal MO drive connected to an internal PCI SCSI card. I know the drive is working because I can format and create a newfs on disks, then mount read and write to the disks I have just created. I mount the disk by using the following command.
# mount /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s2 /mnt/mo
When I try to mount a disk MO formatted on another Solaris system using the same command I get an error
# mount /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s2 /mnt/mo
mount: /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s2 is not this fstype
I have tried to change the fstype to autofs in the vfstab file but this would not work. I have a Linux box with the same hardware installed and I can mount both MO disks (mine and ones formatted on other systems) by using the following command:
mount -t -ufs -o ufstype=sun /dev/sda /mnt/mo
I can read and write to both MO disks in Linux (after complilng the kernel with WR support for UFS in Linux) but not in Solaris.
Can anyone give me hints as to why I can not mount the disks from other Solaris machines?
Do I need to add other file system support?
Can I do some checks on the MO disk to make sure it is compatible?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Thanks for your responce.
I have 2 new solaris X86 boxes which I have just built. Our customer sends us data on MO disks formatted in UFS from their solaris 8 SPARC boxes. If what you are saying is true, it may not be possiable to read the MO disks on my X86 solaris box then.
All of the disks I am trying are 512 bytes/sector (4.1GB or 2.3GB).
I have not tried Solaris 10 but if may be worth a go before I go out and buy a SPARC station.
When I do the following commands this is the output I get:
On the UFS formatted on a SPARC station
#fdisk -w /dev/rdsk/c0t6d0p0
# (returns with no errors. I also tried s2 instead of s2)
#prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/c0t6d0s2

results were teh same exept:

In conclusion does this mean that we can not read the disks formatted on the SPARC boxes?
Do you know of anything else I can try?
Thanks in advance.

You need to get some software that allows your Mac to read and write to the NTFS disk.  There's a whole bunch of stuff out there, but this program has a good review, and you can try it for free.  I would move everything off of your external drive, reformat it into Mac OSX extended, and use it for your Mac.  You don't need NTFS anymore, unless you still have a Windows computer that needs it.

  • Aperture Install Disk not working, How can I download it?

I have just had to replace my hard drive in my iMac and now have to reinstall Aperture 3.
I have the disk but my computer doesn't seem to want to read it. I have the serial number etc. still and the only options i can see suggested is to downloand the trial. However, that is no longer available, is there a way that i can do this without purchasing this again??
    Thanks

I have the disk but my computer doesn't seem to want to read it.
Does the disk not mount at all, or does the installer not run and you get an error message?
"check with the developer to make sure Aperture works with this version of Mac OS X" .
Some of the older installer DVDs give his error message, because a developer certificate expired. This easily solved by resetting the date before installing, see the thread below.
Re: Install failure for Aperture 3 on my MacBook Pro. Operating on Lion.
If the installer disk does not mount, try to read it on another computer and create a disk image from it. Perhaps somebody can let you borrow another computer for this?
What was the Aperture version you have been running before the crash? If it has been Aperture 3.5.1, you should be able to download it from the AppStore, Purchased tab.

  • [SOLVED] (Auto)mounting in KDE not working after switch to systemd

After I switched to systemd (everything else works fine now) I cannot mount any disk (CD/DVD/USB disk) with KDE 4.9.2.
I only get the error message "cannot mount the following device: [...]".
This is also the case when logged in as root, so it's probably not a problem with permissions.
    Manually mounting works fine.
These lines show up in syslog when attaching a USB disk:

I'm not sure I really agree with IgnorantGuru in that I used to use a script which mounted my floppy with udisk --sorry old school--and with the systemd change, I now only had to change my script back to the KISS principle of mount and umount, without udisk, to make it work.  I don't understand all the complaints about the direction arch is going.  To me it's the same as it's always been.  Arch is for competent linux users, simple as that.  If you don't want to do the work and figure it out--as best you can--on your own, then the forum is your friend.
edit: @alwaysanoob:  Recently, with the change away from consolekit to logind, check to see if your polkit.service is active as many posts are showing that the polkit upgrade is not always activated due to conflicting group id's.  I myself had this problem as polkit was trying to use group id 102 which was already taken by an old install of gdm--which I had to remove--before the polkit.service could be started properly after a reinstall of polkit

  • [SOLVED] Suspend to ram / disk not working in newer kernels

    Hi all,
this puzzles me for a while:
My desktop system was able to suspend to ram / disk flawlessly in older kernels. It stopped working with 3.3. The suspend seems to work, the machine goes to standby. But when I try to resume, the machines is on but the screen stays black. Neither the console is working nor can I ssh into it. Only hard reset gets me out here
I did investigate and found many tips and hints which all led to nowhere. I even changed my filesystem back from btrfs to ext4 and my VGA module from proprietary nvidia to nouveau.
When this all failed I got to the idea to burn several install disks. One of the official 2011.08.19 (kernel 3.0.3) and one of the snapshots 2012.06.05_04-00-01 (kernel 3.3.7) and 2012.07.17_04-00-01 (kernel 3.4.4). I guess these can not be compromised by some hosed installation. I started one by one and issued the follwing command:
    echo mem > /sys/power/state
which suspends the machine successfully in all three cases. With 2011.08.19 the resume is working but the other two fail. Some more info about the hardware:

Another life-sign. The issue is still unsolved but I've come a little further. It seems to be a combination of more failures. The first one is USB hardware. I have a usb keyboard-mouse combo from Logitech (comfort cordless desktop). The USB bus does not wake up correctly when resuming from suspend. So my keyboard is unsuable. I put in a file /etc/pm/sleep.d/20_custom-ehci_hcd with the following content:
    BUSES="0000:00:1a.7 0000:00:1d.7"
    case "${1}" in
    hibernate|suspend)
    # Switch USB buses off
    for bus in $BUSES; do
    echo -n $bus | tee /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/unbind
    done
    resume|thaw)
    # Switch USB buses back on
    for bus in $BUSES; do
    echo -n $bus | tee /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/bind
    done
    esac
The bus IDs were taken from /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd
When I start pm-suspend from a console (no X started) this seems to reanimate my keyboard while the screen stays black (with backlight on). I can type and reboot. Also I can ssh into the machine from my laptop.
Concerning the blank screen there seems to be a bug in both the proprietary nvidia modules as well as the nouveau driver. The nvidia folks have issued a new beta driver which seems to at least minimize the failures. This all concerns the nv50-family of nvidias cards. I have a GF8600GT which is one of these
I'll wait for this driver and then restart my testing. Until then - no suspend/hibernate
EDIT: Today's nvidia 304.32 is solving my issues - I can sleep again

  • External Hard Drive no longer working. Repair disk not working

It appears in the finder, but says I should take everything off of it and restore it.
Weird thing is, it says it's a 465GB capacity, and 236 is available, with 56,708 files on there, but it says 0 items in the finder, so it can't see everything.
I have important stuff backed up on there, but it's not loading.
Disk utility won't repair the disk, and the repair disk permissions are greyed out.
Incorrect number of Access Control Lists
The volume KYLE-HD could not be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
Those are what I get when I try to repair disk
Also for owners enabled, it says no, not sure if that is impt. or not.

    I'm experiencing a similar issue...
In the middle of copying items from an external drive (ironically, to reformat and enable Time Machine), finder popped up a 'Device Removal' warning... and the two volumes (partitions) of my external HDD disappeared and would not remount. (Disk Utility would not show the drive or volumes.)
I disconnected, powered down the drive and tried reconnecting - same problem... volumes wouldn't mount and Disk Utility showed no disk (despite the hdd showing up under system profiler just fine).
Tried again, and got the problems Kylecool is describing.
Luckily, most of what I wanted to get off the drive had already copied... there's just one more essential (iPhoto library... yes, I have a backup - but I spent a few hours a couple of days ago integrating two libraries into one [a painful process that I don't want to repeat]...).
I'm in the process of copying the library now, and will then reformat - so hopefully no great loss... but thought I'd add my experience to that of Kylecool's as it may be an issue with 10.5?
    (HDD is connected via FW400.)

  • I have compaq cq50. was VISTA upgraded to WIN 7. Recovery disks not working. BOOTMGR compressed

will not boot up.  I have 2 recovery disks, the 1 of 2 will take but 2 of 2 disk doesnt run.

    Hi:
If you are trying to use the Vista recovery disks and they are not working, and you can read your Vista product key on the bottom of your notebook, then you can make your own Vista installation disk by reading the guidance below.
If you're up to a slight but rewarding challenge you can make your own if you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the PC.
Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them an my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
When you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-v....
After you successfully install Vista, you can then install the drivers from your PC's support and driver page.

  • Recovery disks not working

I have an HP G60 Notebook PC, Product # NW144UA#ABA
The computer got a virus and couldnt open Microsoft Office applications so I wanted to restore it to the original factory settings. I created my own set of recovery disks (used 3 DVD-Rs). I started the recovery manager and followed the steps, the first disk worked just fine then popped out and asked for the second. I tried to put in the second disk (correctly labeled from when it was made) and it said the disk is not good, please insert disk #2. I have tried this several times and same thing. Now I can't even get back to the regular computer. When I turn it off or cancel the recovery manager it comes up with a black screen saying BootMGR not working (or something.. cant remember exact words). At one point in trying the recovery manager I got an "error 1002 please contact HP" message. I have tried to keep inserting disk #2 and after 20 times it still wouldnt work. I have tried to call HP customer service and was told I could buy recovery disks, but shouldn't my disks work? Please help!!!

    Hi:
Sometimes the recovery disks don't work that you make for one reason or another.
Unfortunately, there are hundreds of posts like yours and unfortunately, very few answers.  I have yet been able to help someone get their recovery disks to work.
So, I see that you may have two options (only one if you can't read all 25 characters of the Vista product key on the bottom of your PC:
    1. Order a set of HP recovery disks and hope they work.
    2. Make your own plain windows vista installation media if you can read your vista product key.
This will NOT restore your PC to factory condition. It will only install the operating system, and you will need to either have your program installation files and also use whatever downloads and drivers are available from your notebook's support and driver page.
Start from page 289 at the link below.

  • Recovery disks not working for Satellite L350

I have a Toshiba Satellite L350 which I bought some years ago
Originally it was a vista home premium laptop and I opted for the Toshiba windows 7 upgrade and its been pretty much trouble free .
However recently something went a bit weird and things just were not working well (it would not always log you out and never seemed to shutdown correctly) and various other applications did not run correctly.
After a few uninstalls ,reinstalls, scans and Microsoft patches did nothing I decided to take the plunge and use the recovery disk.
I had bought one from Toshiba when I got the machine originally and had made one myself before the upgrade to windows 7 and one again after.
I still have the windows 7 upgrade dvds so I can apply them after if I had to start back on vista again.
The only other big change has been a RAM upgrade to 4gb - I still have the original RAM if I need it but before all this there were no hardware issues reported and chkdsk was fine also.
So to me it was the o/s that was the problem.
I have now tried all the recovery disks and they all have the same problem reporting that imagex cannot uncompress the second file image as it is corrupt at block 90 I dont have this actual message to hand
    but can update later.
I cant see that Im doing anything wrong as all i do is put the dvd in the drive and restart the laptop with F12 to boot off the recovery DVD and follow the on screen commands.
Have you any reports of such of this previously or am I doing something stupid?
    Thanks

Thats very strange that al recovery discs show the same error message. As far as I know when you start recovery image installation the HDD will be formatted, new partitions created, recovery image copied on second HDD partition and as last step is recovery image installation.
    >I had bought one from Toshiba when I got the machine originally and had made one myself before the upgrade to windows 7...
Have you tested both of them in the past?
Generally speaking all you do is right. In my opinion the problem can be recovery image itself or maybe HDD has some failure on certain sectors.
If you can obtain second HDD somewhere exchange it, set BIOS to default settings and test recovery installation again.

  • Recovery Disks Not Working - Windows 8

    Hi,
This relates to my G6-2240sa HP Pavilion, bought 14 months ago, preinstalled with Windows 8 (later upgraded to 8.1)
Just out of curiosity I installed Linux Mint, hoping to dual-boot my system.
In the process I have wiped out everything on my HD.
I didn't mind that so much, as a fresh install of Windows 8 would have been welcome.
But now I find that the recovery disks (4) that I created are not working.
Whichever of the three options I choose (and I have tried them all) the process grinds to a halt, becoming unresponsive at anything from 7% to a max of 34% on the second disk. Then I am confronted with "The destination Drive is not Connected"
(I presume it means my hard drive. What on earth had it been doing for three hours,  to suddenly discover that?)
I have run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI thorough disk test and it comes up as Long DST: Passed, Memory Quick Test: Passed.
Started the recovery process from the bios defaults, using the optical drive as the first boot device, which only managed to reach a max of 17% before freezing. Strangely, the better results of 34% came from using a USB external DVD)
I have been through most of the other posts on here to find a solution, but none of them seem to apply to my specific problem.
Took it back to PC World, where I was informed that my best bet would be to buy a set of Recovery disks for my Model, Serial number, Product ID, obtainable from the Netherlands at a cost of £42, and I am waiting for them to arrive now.
Now I'm wondering, at the risk of throwing good money after bad, would it make more sense to buy new Windows 8 software or a different computer?
Surely having paid for a system that claims to offer security in the form of a recovery procedure, I am entitled that it should work as claimed.
After more than a week I'm at my wits end as I cannot use any of my programs without a Windows platform.

    Success!
Although I have to say that with a poplation of over 7 billion I did think that my problem would have attracted more response than just one reply.
However, my thanks to Indypat for that. You gave me the hope to keep trying.
I read your solution from your link Pat, removed the SSD (taping the bare connectors, just in case), did all the other things suggested and tried again. Twenty more times! Still no go.
Was just surfing the net to find the cheapest OEM to buy, when the mailman (We call them postmen) arrived at last with the recovery disks I had ordered.
Started the process at 10 am ( I think I had to replace the SSD first to authorize the process) and by 4 pm recovery was complete! So my conclusions are that the recovery disks I made, did not work. Don't ask me why - I made them all according to the instructions - maybe the medium was faulty?
Now, (and for the foreseeable future as far as I can see) I shall continue updating Windows and reinstalling all my precious programs.
Still, after two weeks' cast into the outer darkness, at least I have clean Windows.
I'm glad you got your own problem sorted at last Pat. Like yourself, I am an HP fan. (again)

  • Hp recovery disks not working- will not reboot

I have an hp envy ultrabook touchsmart model 14-k033TU. About a week ago the laptop decided to shut down and perform an update. It was bed time so I let it do it's thing. During then update it may have switched off as it was not plugged in ?ran out of power. When I next tried to switch it on a blue screen appeared with a sad emoticon with the message "your pc ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collectinng some error info...". I cannot read the source of the error as it flashes by too quickly. It alternates between this blue screen and a black one that says "preparing automatic repair".
I called hp after trying a few solutions online, several of which weren't applicable as it will not start normally. It just loops between the two screens. They sent me some recovery disks but I had to purchase a usb cd/dvd drive to use these. I put the first disk in and nothing happened. I pressed esc and tried to boot from disk as someone suggested but it did not work. The loop continues. I am not sure what I else I can try. I guess it's deeply corrupted now. Any ideas?

  • Nokia 920 on Pay Mountly account does not work in Europe..again.

So this is the second holiday I have gone on with my Nokia 920 and its not worked in Europe.I've had phone and account for well over a year now.Am on a Pay monthly deal and activated the "Euro Talk & Text Booster"  before I left. Checking my account - it is still active. Would not work - again. Pretty dissapointed, and if it happens again I will consider my options when it comes to renewing my account.. Annoyingly my wife and son's Nokia 620 and iphone 4 respectively both worked with cheap'n'cheerful GiffGaff PAYG accounts, but not my Pay Monthly phone. In all countries an Automatic search found nothing. Manual search in any location (France, Italy, Gibraltar and Portugal) found networks, but when I selected any of them it would say they could not be connected, whereas the Giffgaff phones worked with any network they found. Any help appreciated. MD

Sorry I don't see that. I have already looked here. When I get into my account I don't have have "Devices and Usage" option to select.I have a "My Phone", which I have recnetly manually selected as  the Nokia 920, as it was blank. The menu on the left hand side of the dashboard is shown belowI should point out I am currently on a SIM only deal I beleive. and the phone was not purchased through EE/T-mobile.I got the discounted SIM only deal when I tried to leave EE over a year ago. • Grey Screen on Start up and Hard disk not working

Hi , I was working and suddenly some popping noises came out of the hard drive. I tried to save my work but i couldn't because it got "stuck". I had to turn it off and when I restarted a grey screen appeared without the apple logo. It won't start up and starting from cd, safe mode, single user mode don't work. I reset the PRAM too and nothing works. I'm worried about recovering the data... what should I do? I have work there that i need!!!
    thanks

thanks for your reply. I took my powerbook to 2 apple authorized technical service and both of them told me that they couldn't get the data using disk warrior.
I already removed the hard drive and replace it with a new one. However I still want to recover data. I plug the hard drive to my home powermac with a usb connector and using disk utility and terminal i was able to "see" the drive but not mount it. In disk utility the drive appears as 0 bytes.
I want to try using Terminal or Single user mode to mount the hard drive, and/or repair it and try to recover some important files that I urgently need. Do you know how?

  • External hard-disk not working with firewire under Snow Leopard

Hi. I have a LaCie d2 external hard-disk that has Firewire 800, 400 and usb2. I previously used it on my old (angle-poise) iMac connecting using the Firewire 400 socket. I've just a got a new mac with Snow Leopard and I thought it would we best to connect to the LaCie with Firewire 800. However when I do this, the disc mounts ok, but browsing in the Finder is really slow and copying files from the disk to the imac seems to work at a really slow rate (less than USB1 speed) if at all ! However, I switched to using the USB2 connection instead and it works like a dream. What gives ? Is Firewire in Snow Leopard buggy ??

There's no problem with the drive.
Maybe true, and the drive would probably work fine with Leopard. One thing that's obvious is that Apple did make changes in the way that FireWire works in Snow Leopard. Many drives and drive manufacturers work well with SL, but there have also been reports of firmware issues by Western Digital and other companies.
Have you checked with your vendor to see if they are offering a firmware update for your drive?
BTW, I got a new FW case a few months ago while at a Fry's electronic store. The brand new USB2 and FW400 cables worked fine. The FW800 cable did not, but another cable came to the rescue. Just saying...
