Mounting disks/partitioning. Alternatives to fstab?

I wanted to be able to separate the OS, Applications and Users and had found an excellent article by Justin (Ref: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040716153639236). But now with Snow Leopard, fstab has been discontinued and this won't work
Is there any alternate solution to achieve the same as I would want to
1. Install OS in a separate partition
2. Put swap in separate partition (this is still doable but here I'm not looking for pro's con's of doing this)
* the above two would significantly help reduce disk fragmentation I suppose as the main reason for me to do this is, once the disk is near full, performance goes for a toss and getting tired of seeing rainbow circles
3. Put the /Applications in a different partition (may be on the same disk as root)
4. Put /Users on to second disk
Looking for some pointers as well as some insight into how the partitions are handled in Snow Leopard.
Thanks in advance,
-Kesari.

Thanks to every one of you who helped me with the answer. In particular KJK555's comment wrt fstab as well as pointers suggested by R C-R. It was a good reading and indeed a good learning experience for me as this provided quite a bit of insight into Mac for coming from Solaris/Linux. Also, my boot time is under 36 secs with all my apps, initialization with toshiba 500gb 7200rpm disk (would scream if I could get a ssd I suppose. But with mbp, have to live with one disk unless I forego my dvd drive).
Now, to answer why I did this or rather why I wanted to do this extra (unwanted ?) steps:
I can't religiously monitor my disk usage and putting all under one partition, install, uninstall applications etc and I would figure out that either /tmp run out of space or system crash and take for ever to reboot and then end up finding what I can part with and where to squeeze in space from
Now at least by keeping root partion out of all these hassle, I'm safe as I won't run out of space in /.
Another immediate benefit I could think of is, I don't need regular backup of most of the partitions and take only selective ones. In particular of some one is using vmware or virtualbox and set up timemachine, they would love to have this as only they know the pain. Now it's simple. Just put all the vm's in one partition and setup snapshot from the vm onto another partition and take the initial backup of the vm's partition and just setup time machine for the snapshot area. I could go on with advantages but would leave it for other's imagination. Video editing folks !!!
Coming to mistakes or rather my learning experience.
The suggestions in macosxhints works very much except for the fstab changes and here's some tips for those who's looking for this info:
1. The mounting order is always not the same i.e. don't expect /dev/disk0s3 to be mounted as /whatever. This never works. Mount using the UUID instead.
2. Do not try to mount / from fstab and just leave it to the OS. For that matter, just mount those you need it different and leave the rest (in my case now it's only Applications and Users)
3. Trying to add swap or moving it around to a different partition is waste of time as I didn't find any significant gain by doing this. Rather I think by doing this you will be limiting the swap size to the partition size. Now that / is good enough (40gb is quite a lot once you move /Applications out) and this gives excellent leg space for swap or any files in /
4. Not sure but I think this is due to the way OS initializes/uses Applications folder. When I tried to put Applications on to a different disk, it doesn't seem to like it and felt boot time was more as well as login/initialization time. But works fine after boot. Don't think this is a stopper as I have plenty of space to put in Applications on the first drive containing root.
Now I'm going to reinstall (3rd attempt) as with this experiment, found that I may not need such a huge root and (redundant) swap partitions. Little more to my /Users. Here's my planned allocation: root 20gb, alternate root 20gb (for future use), Applications 120gb, Users 120gb, data 200gb.
Once again thanks to all of you for this information.
Wouldn't it be slick, if Apple would produce a 4 or six core Developer's edition MacBook Pro with
up to 16GB of ram and one of WD's new 600GB 10,000 rpm 2.5 inch Velociraptor as standard
equipment?
This would be my dream MBP and would be the first one to buy if it's under $1500

  • Auto-detect & mount disk partitions and removable drives

    I use ubuntu in addition to my current wip of installing arch linux.Now i have installed lxde desktop. But i am not able to see any of my partitions of my disk and other hdd. Besides removable drives also dont get mounted.
    Similarly if a new partition is created the same also gets autodetected in ubuntu. eg my arch linux partition. I need not go to do any fiddling in the system to recognize the same.
    So is it possible to achieve the same under archlinux?So want to know how to get  the same done.
    what i want is to have the partitions[ext & ntfs] detected when the filemanager is opened and mount/unmount at my will, just as i do now in ubuntu.
    So far what i have done is based on the lxde wiki, i installed the polkit-gnome gvfs package but nothing is mounted.
    i would like to have specific instructions to how to work out and get the above  done.
    pls guide to the same.

    What do you mean when you say that pcmanfm is not displaying *any* partitions? You see no files at all? Or do you mean: it is not showing partitions not listed in /etc/fstab?
    I mean it is not showing partitions not listed in /etc/fstab. As of now pcmanfm shows only the arch systems partitions which I created while installation : root, and home. Balance of partitions of other systems of the same drive and second hard drive is not shown.
    When you say that in Ubuntu, newly created partitions show up automatically, do you mean that if you change the partitioning on your internal drive, the changes are automatically reflected in /etc/fstab?
    Yes the changes are automatically reflected in the filemanager of ubuntu, ie. Nautilius. However Ubuntu fstab as you see in the previous post of mine contains no entry to other partitions other than just ubuntus.In the fstab I posted above you can very well see it just shows 4 partitions of hdd1  [similar to the way the arch fstab shows only its own] where it is installed :boot,root,home, swap. Whereas there is two more partitions there viz windows and a ntfs. You don’t see them in fstab, but when you open the nautilius filemanager you can see the drives. See the image link of my filemanger posted below at the end. In that shared data and windows are two ntfs partition of hdd1 where ubuntu is installed. Arch is installed on 2nd hdd alongwith a Ubuntu.289gb partition is a ubuntu LVM along with arch root and arch home you can see.
    If you mean that Ubuntu automatically adds, mounts and unmounts partitions on removable drives when e.g. a USB stick is inserted or when you change the partitioning on one and create a file system, that you can configure to work automatically in arch.
    Yes ubuntu automatically adds, mounts and unmounts partitions on internal drives and also removable drives when e.g. a USB stick is inserted  . As you can see in the image i have posted, it shows all my internal drive partitions automatically. No fstab editing nothing. No fiddling with system files so far i have done in ubuntu. For eg i installed arch a month back, the same you can see is automatically seen in the image. All i required was to   update grub  to recognise árch'. Post that when you boot, automatically the new arch partitions are seen. No fstab fiddling anything. Thus tomorrow morning if i create a new partition on my hdd via ubuntu all i require is to reboot post the creation and i will see the new partition asap.
    As you can see in the image all my partitions are seen, the one i want i click it and it gets mounted, if i dont want it stays/gets unmounted. And its not just ubuntu i saw the same in some other distros also like suse,centos,fedora.
    As far as the lxde wiki is concerned, there it is mentioned to install polkit gnome gvfs for mounting and i did the same but nothing still happens.
    So this is what exactly i am asking how to do the same on my arch system. So if i am guided i wil go ahead and work to achieve the same.

  • Terminal Command to Re-Mount an Unmounted Local Disk Partition?

    Hello,
    Does anyone know a terminal command (or applescript command) to re-mount an unmounted local disk partition? I know it can be done using the DiskUtility, but I would like to do it from the Terminal without launching another program.
    Using Tiger 10.4.5 on a G5

    Hi Tom,
       AppleScript will execute anything that you can exectute from the command line that isn't interactive but it won't execute it in the same way. By that I mean that the environment will be more vanilla. In this case the problem is that the path is rather basic. All you have to do is to use an absolute path to the script and it should work. Apple has a pretty good reference for the mechanism, Technical Note TN2065: do shell script in AppleScript.
       Is wakeonlan basically the same thing as waking upon receipt of a "magic packet"? I think you can easily make Mac OS X do that by itself. Just open System Preferences and the "Options" tab of the "Energy Saver" pane. Check the checkbox beside "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access".

  • External firewire disk partition will not mount

    I have two external hard drives connected by a firewire to my 2002 G4 iMac running OSX 10.3.9. One is a 160GB and the second a 360GB drive.
    I was out of the room when the area experienced a minor power drop in voltage and when I came back the iMac had the message to shut down and restart. When I restarted everything appeared normal until I realised that one partition did not mount on the 360GB drive. I ran Disk Utility to check the disk and it found some issues (I failed to write them down..) but Disk Utility appeared to fix them.
    The disk has 2 partitions and only one of the two partitions will not mount (the second partition works fine!). Disk Utility says that both partitions check OK.
    I have rebooted several times. I have removed all other external attachments and rebooted but still the partition will not mount.
    I cannot see the partition in Finder. The second partition on the disk is available to see and use in Finder.
    I have selected the partition in Disk Utility (grayed out) and tried the "mount" button but nothing happens. For some 18 months up until now the drive has worked fine although I did notice a couple of times it took a while for the drive to open up in Finder and other applications. I use that particular partition daily, it has approx 100GB used of the 150GB total space.
    When I ran Disk Utility it comes up with a variation in the results compared with the partition that has mounted OK. The result of running "Verify Disk" is listed below. The only diffeerence between the two partitions is the first line of each volume. Does the ",0" following "Checking HFS Plus volume." for the first partition called "Genesys1" indicate anything?

    Hello! Power failures are murder on disk drive directories as you have found out. Your best shot is to get DISKWARRIOR. It is the "gold standard" for these types of problems and can usually resolve the issue when Disk Utility cannot. As with any utility there are times when even it cannot fix things but it's the best there is at resolving such issues. Tom

  • Can't Mount Windows Partition in OSX After Upgrading to 10.5 and BC 2.0

    I just installed Leopard today, using the upgrade option (as opposed to a clean install). I was happy to see that I could boot into Windows still, and installed all of the Boot Camp 2.0 drivers while booted into Vista. However, I can no longer mount my Windows partition in OSX. While using Tiger, I did use MacFuse and ntfs-3g to get read-write support, but in Leopard, I can't even read. When I try to mount the Windows volume in Disk Utility, I get an error stating that it cannot be mounted. I also do not have the option to perform "First Aid" or "Repair" on the volume.
    I realize that the latest version of ntfs-3g isn't proven to work with Leopard, but I would at least like read access in OSX. Is it possible that some settings were left over from my Tiger configuration that would not allow Leopard to mount the partition? Any ideas?
    Thank you.

    Ok. I'm in the club with the same problem...
    Strange things:
    * For the first days after Leopard's install, my BootCamp disk0s3 partition (I'll name it "BillGates") was mounted correctly. Then, after a few days (but BEFORE upgrading to 10.5.1), it disappeared.
    * If I launch DiskUtility "BillGates" is shown, but (in the right device navigation bar) it's named "-n BillGates". If I click the Erase menu, it's named "-nBillGates" (without the space between "-n" and "BillGates"). If I launch SystemProfiler it's named "-n BillGates", but the mount point is "/Volumes/billgates". Can't understand where this "-n" thing is coming from!
    * If I try to mount "-n BillGates" from DiskUtility it doesn't work and the log says "Mount of -n BillGates failed".
    * In the FSTAB there were no instructions: it was empty.
    Now, I tried the MacFUSE-solution: no results (meaning BillGates was not mounted on startup).
    I tried the modify-the-FSTAB-solution: no results (with "BillGates", "-n BillGates" nor "-nBillGates".
    I tried the chkdsk-solution: all tests were ok, but nothing happened.
    The only trick that worked was mounting the partition with Terminal's commands (thanks rtracy!!). It made appear "BillGates" on the desktop (without the "-n thing", that is still present in DiskUtility).
    Problem is at the first reboot, the Boot Camp partition disappears again. Any ideas for a permanent fix?!
    Giangiacomo.
    ADDENDUM: I've tried to move a file from desktop to an unlocked folder in BillGates and System did not copy them. "The item could not be moved because "BillGates" cannot be modified" !!!!!!!!

    mount any disk images. I get an error saying broken
    pipe. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
    Here's what MacFixit says :
    Disk images not mounting [Updated] Several users report an inability mount disk images after applying the Mac OS X 10.4.9 update.
    If you are having a problem where disk images won't mount, try booting in Safe Mode (by holding down the Shift key while starting up), then re-attempting mounting of the disk image.
    This solution is particularly useful for the following scenario: You want to try re-application of the Mac OS X combo updater (a common workaround for issues that occur after an incremental Mac OS X update), but are unable to mount the combo updater disk image.
    Prior to booting in safe mode, however, you can delete the following files:
    * /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    * /System/Library/com.apple.kernelcaches
    and re-attempting the mount. These, and other cache files, are automatically deleted when you boot in safe mode, but you can potentially save some time by trying deletion of these files (then logging out and back in) first.
    Another option is to use an alternative tool that can mount disk images, like Mount.app, FlashMount, or Toast Titanium.
    MacFixIt reader Joy Denton is one user who had success with our posted workaround:
    "Just wanted to let you know that I had the issue of Disk Images not mounting. This occurred after installing Mac OS X 10.4.9 from Software Update. Fortunately, I read your post regarding a possible fix by using the Combo Update and used Toast to mount the disk image. Ran the Combo Update and ran AppleJack once again. I am now able to mount disk images. This was an annoying problem to be sure."
    But imho the best advice that can be given about software updates is to always have a clone of your system on another partition or external HD so you can boot on it if anything goes wrong. From an external system you can repair your internal disk, install the Combo update if the incremental one failed, etc.

  • KDE's Dolphin can't mount NTFS partitions after upgrade to systemd

    Hi, I just finished to migrate my system to a pure systemd setup. Everithing seems to work fine, except that Dolphin can't mount NTFS partitions anymore, as it was able to do before. I'm not 100% sure that systemd is the culprit, but nevertheless it is a big change in my system so I assume that it may be the problem.
    Trying to mount with Dolphin I get this error message:
    An error occurred while accessing 'sATA-a', the system responded: The requested operation has failed.: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
    Error opening '/dev/sdb1': Permesso negato
    Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Permesso negato
    Please check '/dev/sdb1' and the ntfs-3g binary permissions,
    and the mounting user ID. More explanation is provided at
    http://tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-faq/#unprivileged
    I used to get this kind of error aeons ago when trying to mount from CL; puzzling enough, mounting from CL now works:
    $ mount /media/disks/sATA-a
    $ ls /media/disks/sATA-a
    Documenti Download $RECYCLE.BIN RECYCLER sATA-b System Volume Information Temp Video
    This is the relevant entry in my fstab (I don't know if Dolphin cares about it...):
    #sATA-a
    UUID=D6789B21789B0003 /media/disks/sATA-a ntfs-3g noauto,users 0 0
    And finally:
    $ ll `which ntfs-3g`
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 125K 21 apr 12.13 /bin/ntfs-3g
    Can anybody give me a hint? Thanks.

    OK, the mess is growing up. Today I switched my laptop to systemd, and the mount problem has appeared  on this system as well. So I am confident that this is a systemd-related issue, and maybe some stock Arch config file is broken. I have this entry on my /etc/fstab for the ntfs-3g drive:
    UUID=88705BA9705B9D2E /media/vista ntfs-3g noauto,users,exec 0 0
    I compiled ntfs-3g with internal fuse support and did the setuid trick:
    $ ls -l `which ntfs-3g`
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 125K 16 apr 2012 /bin/ntfs-3g
    I can mount the disk using the command:
    $ mount /media/vista/
    $
    It works flawlessly, so ntfs-3g works. If I try to mount it with udisks I get:
    $ /usr/bin/udisks --mount /dev/sda2 --mount-options users,exec
    Mount failed: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
    Error opening '/dev/sda2': Permesso negato
    Failed to mount '/dev/sda2': Permesso negato
    Please check '/dev/sda2' and the ntfs-3g binary permissions,
    and the mounting user ID. More explanation is provided at
    http://tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-faq/#unprivileged
    It sounds to me that udisks is trying to mount the disk as a different user, but I'm not an expert so I might be wrong. If I remove the entry in /etc/fstab then udisks will ask for the password. Repeating the same steps but for an ext3 partition, I am able to mount with udisks when there is a proper fstab entry, and I'm asked for a password when that entry is commented out.
    Based on these findings, I strongly suspect that there is some problem with logind configuration in my system. I have been going round and round for hours, serching the web and the wiki (which BTW is in a very bad shape, containing outdated or no informations about mount policies in the polkit and udev sections), and now I feel I need some help to go through it... thanks.

  • [~SOLVED] 1 min hang during boot while mounting xfs partitions (LVM)

    Hi all,
    After the upgrade I did yesterday (which included linux-3.12.8-1 and lvm2), the boot time has increased by 1 minute as the system hangs while mounting two partitions formatted as xfs and residing on logical volumes.
    $ systemd-analyze blame

    1min 13.111s home-VDP76-VBox_VMs.mount

    I have the fsck hook as second-to-last entry in my mkinitcpio.conf, but the fstab entries for these partitions include
    ... xfs defaults 0 0
    so, as far as I undertstand, the partitions should not be checked, am I missing something!?
    I have googled for similar issues but I did not find anything useful, any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    edit: I blame the check disk because of what reported on the system journal (note the time stamps):

    edit2: I have freed up almost all space on the video partition and the time for mounting those partitions has now decreased to 8 sec...I will mark the thread as solved, but I still would appreciate an input on the reasons why the partitions are checked regardless of the fstab setting, for example, is this pertinent!?

    exactly..in fact the man page says
    fsck.xfs(8) wrote:fsck.xfs - do nothing, successfully
    so fsck.xfs simply exits with a zero exit status.
    running xfs_check gives
    xfs_check is deprecated and scheduled for removal in June 2014.
    Please use xfs_repair -n <dev> instead.
    and xfs_repair does not find errors on both partitions.
    Still, I do not understand how nothing being done can take up so much time.
    By the way, a short S.M.A.R.T. self-test did not report errors...
    In the meanwhile, there has been another kernel upgrade and the timing issue persists, so I am assuming it has something to do with the last lvm2 upgrade.

  • [SOLVED]Hiding disk partitions on Gnome desktop

    Since upgrading to Gnome 2.22.0, all of my partitions have been showing on the desktop and in the sidebar in nautilus. I don't really want this this to happen, as it gets kind of cluttered.
    This has been a problem before, but after some googling, I managed to solve it by putting a '10ignore-disks.fdi' in /etc/hal/fdi/preprobe/. Since the update though, this no longer works. I've tried playing with /etc/hal/fdi/policy/preferences.fdi (after some more googling) but to no avail. I'm not really sure what to try next. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Also, note that I've read about going to gconf-editor and turning off the 'volumes_visible' option in apps/nautilus/desktop, but this isn't really what I want either, as I'd prefer if removable media was automounted and displayed on the desktop.
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    I have mine in /usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/95userpolicy/10-ignore-disks.fdi instead, and it looks something like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <deviceinfo version="0.2">
    <device>
    <match key="block.device" string="/dev/sdb1">
    <merge key="info.ignore" type="bool">true</merge>
    </match>
    </device>
    </deviceinfo>
    I don't have an entry in /etc/fstab for /dev/sdb1 and mounting it will be via terminal as root.
    If I am not mistaken, in Gnome 2.22, if you want your partitions to be mounted on boot (without the desktop icons), just place corresponding entries to your /etc/fstab mounting each partitions under /mnt.  Without those /etc/fstab entries, Gnome will mount them under /media and will create desktop icons for each.

    How do I mount a partition at a specific mount point? For example I see a Vol01 disk image, which is a partition of one of my hard drives, sitting on my desktop. Under the disk utility it says that its mount point is /Volumes/Vol01. How do I mount this partition as a file system at /Users?
    Thanks, much appreciated.

    why do you want to do this? it sounds like you want to keep your home directory on an external drive. this can be done without changing the mount point of the external. copy the home directory to the external. then in system preferences preferences->accounts, unlock the lock at the bottom, control-click on your user and select "advanced options." In the resulting popup change the location of the home directory to the external.
    in general to change the default mount point of a drive see this link

  • [Solved] unable to mount harddisk partition or flash drive

    After recent updates to gnome 3.4.2,i am unable to mount  harddisk partition or flash drive .I have 2 year old arch installation with gnome.
    When i click on partitions in nautilus,it says "Unable to mount program files \n Not authorized to perform operation"
    Problem is not only while mounting partitions.
    Wherever we need authorization .Like changing date and time ,changing user accounts using gnome UI etc.The unlock button is greyed out permanently.
    even i am not able to shutdown using gnome menus. it just log me out only ,do not restart or shutdown.Though i can shutdown using shutdown command on commandline.
    i run gnome using daemon method. not through xinitrc .
    https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/25031?p … ekit#close
    I found a similar discussion in this bug. But since, i do not use xinitrc, it is unlikely they will help me.
    Can someone be kind enough to help me on this?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Solaris-x86 mount fat32 partition, the partition max size limit?

    solaris10 x86, laptop, 10G FAT32 partition for windows & x86 exchange data.
    the fat32 partition mount as normal, can be read fine.
    but write some file by x86, that can not find by windows.
    anyboy know did the solaris-x86 mount fat32 partition, the partition max size limit? or no limit, why this problem occur?

    Mounting Windows partition in Solaris
    The easiest way to share data now is to do it through a FAT32 partition. Solaris
    recognises it as partition of type pcfs. It is specified as device:drive where drive is
    either the DOS logical drive letter (c through z) or a drive number (1 through 24).
    Drive letter c is equivalent to drive number 1 and represents the Primary DOS partition
    on the disk; drive letters d through z are equivalent to drive numbers 2 through 24,
    and represent DOS drives within the Extended DOS partition.Syntax is
    mount -F pcfs device:drive /directroy-name
    where directory name specifies the location where the file system is mounted.
    To mount the first logical drive (d:) in the Extended DOS partition from an IDE hard
    disk in the directory /d use
    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c0d0p0:d /d
    You can use mount directory-name after appending following line is in
    /etc/vfstab file
    device:drive directory-name pcfs no rw
    for example
    c0d0s0:c /c pcfs no rw
    If your windows partition like the following means
    C: - NTFS, D:-FAT32, E:-NTFS, F:-FAT32
    Then you can only mount D, F not C & E.
    Mounting D Drive:
    mount -F pcfs /dev/disk/c0d0p0:c /mountpoint
    Mounting F Drive
    mount -F pcfs /dev/disk/c0d0p0:d /mountpoint
    The driveletter only for fat not including other file systems (ntfs or any linux filesystems).

  • WARNING: Insufficient disk partition space.

    im trying to install J2EE SDK on a SunBlade 150 with Solaris 8. I get the following error message during the drivespace check:
    WARNNG: Insufficient disk partition space to install the items selected
    Im trying to install it in /opt/SUNWappserver/
    I have installed the recommended patch cluster for Solaris 8, so all of my patches are up to date. According to df -k, I have about 4.5 gigs left on that partition, so space is not the issue. I figured it must be a bug with the release.
    Does anyone know the fix for this?

    sure.....heres the info, sorry for the late reply, and thanks again for all of your help:

  • After update udev mounts all partitions automatically (but shoudn`t)

    Here goes: after updating udev from 167-2 to 168-1, it started mounting all partition at boot. No rules (the list and the rules are the default ones) seem to include this, and google said automounting MUST be set up by user.
    Downgrading fixes the issue, but I try to keep the system up to date, so this is not an option. Also I do not want to disable udisk mounting by polkit, since I want to keep the option of mounting them via KDE.
    Can anyone help please?
