Mounting Linux partions in Solaris

What is the proper way to mount a Linux partition in Solaris, so
that read/write is possible?

  • Installing Linux Apps in Solaris Container

Is there a how-to or similar documentation showing how to install and run a Linux app under Solaris 10 x86?
I am particularly interested in running Linux WordPerfect 8/8.1.
I have successfully installed WP8.1/Linux with Free BSD so I have some experience in this sort of grafting.

    Hi
You have a few options, none of them are great.
    1. Wait for "brandz" (basically, other OS personalities in zones). No idea when this will be available, but I wouldn't count too much on it being in 2006.
    2. lxrun. This is part of the companion CD - I'm not aware of any more up-to-date versions (though I've not looked in places like Blastwave). This will require one of 2 suboptions
    a) that you install Linux on your UFS filesystem or
    b) you install Linux on another partition on your disk/another disk and use an ext2fs driver* to mount the Linux parttion.
The SFW lxrun dates from the time of RedHat 6 or 7.

  • Linux emulation in Solaris 10

Hello, I am having trouble getting a Linux program to work in Solaris 10 build 61. I took bin/mktemp, lib/ld-linux.so.2, and lib/ld-2.2.5.so from Debian stable and the program dumped core with FLTBOUNDS / SIGSEGV when I ran it with chroot . bin/mktemp. I also tried a non-chroot variant with libraries copied to /lib, running a stand-alone lib/ld-linux.so.2, a different Linux flavour (ASPLinux) -- nothing helps. Could anyone please shed some light on what is the proper way of running Linux programs in Solaris?

There are rumors that a future Solaris 10 release might be able to execute native linux binaries.
Solaris 10 b60 is not able to run native linux binaries, AFAIK.
You may be able to run a native linux application with the help of "lxrun".

  • Linux support on Solaris 10 x86

When we are trying to run linux binaries on solaris 10 getting the following error:
    update_records: Cannot find /lib/ld-linux.so.2
    update_records: this is linux binary.
Whereas Solaris 10 features states that we can run the linux binaries on solaris 10 natively. Let me know in which release of solaris 10 do we have support for linux libraries

That feature doesn't exist yet. It's suppose to come in a future update of Solaris 10. Your only option if you want to run Linux binaries natively is to use "lxrun"--otherwise get the source, if possible, and recompile.

  • Can I use LINUX Drivers in Solaris 10...

As a beginner, I have installed Solaris 10 version 08/07 onto my system. The motherboard is ASUS M2A-VM, with integrated graphics, network interface, audio, etc...
My audio and network interface are not working... The motherboard came with a cd which has windows drivers and additional software.
It also has linux drivers for:
    Audio:
    Core5
    Core6
    Linux
    RHEL4
    SUSE10
    Other
    realtek-linux-audiopack-4.05f
    LAN
    FreeBSD
    Linux
    SCO_OpenServer6
    Unixware7.x
    Chipset, and RAID!
Has anyone used any of these ASUS Linux drivers with Solaris...
If so what steps do I need to take to get them to work on my system! (I hate to ask, I know you all have better things to do) Maybe you can point me to a good book that explains how to go step by step...
My question is how do I get my NIC to work (What steps do I need to follow? the sound is not an issue, as, I can do with out that. Will any of the drivers mentioned above work?) thank you in advance for your answers...

Drivers are the "connective tissue" between the Operating System and the hardware. The connections from the drivers to the OS are not compatible between different operating systems, so no, you cannot use Linux drivers in Solaris.
If the OS is similar enough you can sometimes get away with it -- example, using Solaris 9 drivers in Solaris 10. But between completely different OSes? Won't work.

  • Problem with Linux executable in solaris

    Hello
I have a problem. We have sunblade workstation with OS solaris 2.8 version. I have downloaded a program which is developed under RedHat 5.1 and complied with Egcs-1.0.2. when i execute this program i am getting the message like bash: ./Al: cannot execute binary file
I would be thankfull if someone tell me how to solve the problem.
    Thanks Raji

You need lxrun do be able to run Linux binaries on Solaris x86. You can get it at
    http://soldc.sun.com/freeware/details/detail_lxrun_0.9.6.1_8_Intel.html
I've never used it, so please post your results here.

  • Mounting XRAID onto a solaris server

    Hi
I need to migrate data from a hitatchi RAID currently managed by a solaris server to an XRAID that will be managed by an Xserve. If they are on the same network can I just mount the XRAID temporarily on the solaris server using mount -F nfs Xservername:/newdirectory /mnt and then just use the cp command to transfer the data or is that just not sensible.
    Regards
      Mac OS X (10.4)

There's no problem exporting an Xserve RAID volume as NFS and then mounting it on the Solaris box.
You need to set up the sharepoint using Workgroup Manager on the Xserve RAID, but then you should be good to go. Of course, NFS security is... no security... so be careful with the default export rules.
Also, depending on how large the volume is, Solaris may have problems seeing exports that are larger than 1 or 2 TB. What version of Solaris is it?

  • NFS latency when Solaris 10 client mounts Linux NFS server(EMC NAS)

    Hello,
One of our developers discovered a problem that for simplicity we call "latency". We have several 5.10 clients that we see the exact same symptoms on when NFS mounting our Celerra. The NAS is running a Linux variant "2.4.9-34.5406.EMC", but before you all jump on the "it's EMC's problem" bandwagon, let me explain. We set up an automated process (Perl) that watches an exported folder for the appearance of a request file (rand.req). When the request file comes in we rename the request file to (rand.sav) and then return a "report" named (rand.res). Very elegent I thought, and it runs at near lightspeed when only Linux NFS clients mount the share and create, monitor, delete, etc any files. In fact there is zero recorded latency from the time the report file appears and when the client detects it. But for all our Solaris 10 clients, they create the request file just fine, and the Perl process running on the Linux box sees the file instantaneously and returns the report, but it takes the Solaris client anywhere from 5 to up to 50 seconds before it see's any change in status for any files the Linux box manipulates. I've tried every possible combination of mount -o options there are including noac, rsize and wsize variants, vers=2, proto=udp, actimeo=0, etc, etc, etc. Nothing seems to be the magic bullet. nfsstat -c shows nothing out of the ordinary. There are no retransmits or dropepd packets anywhere in between, no firewall loads, no connectivity delays whatsoever. I'm completely out of ideas. Any ideas or clues would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks
    Dave

No specific recommendations. But maybe you can watch the cable and get more information.
Set up a case where the file has been created, then have the client check and snoop the cable at the same time. Does the client actually issue a directory check (or is it just displaying cached information)? Does the response contain the new file?
    Something to test anyway...

  • Mounting a dvd on Solaris 10

I am a linux user, not a Solaris user and I am running solaris 10 on a Blade 100. I want to mount a dvd but am unsure of how to mount it because of the difference between Solaris and Linux command lines. "mount cdrom" does not work. I am sure this is an easy answer to this question but I can't seem to get this DVD mounted.
    Thanks,
    Michael

Unless you've changed the system's configuration, mounting
CD/DVD media is supposed to happen automatically, with the
    help of the "vold" daemon.
The CD/DVD will be mounted somewhere in /cdrom/xxxx with a
symbolic link /cdrom/cdrom0 pointing to the root directory of the
    media.
If you've disabled "vold", of if you didn't install it, manual mounting
    works like this:
    1. iostat -En
This command can be used to print a list of SCSI/ATAPI/USB/
Firewire disk/cdrom/dvdrom devices. Note the disk id in front
of the entry, for example "c1t1d0":
    % iostat -En
c1t1d0           Soft Errors: 1 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
Vendor: HL-DT-ST Product: DVDRAM GMA-4020B Revision: A105 Serial No:
    Size: 0.00GB <0 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 0 Recoverable: 0
Illegal Request: 1 Predictive Failure Analysis: 02. Manually mount the device, using the device id from the above
iostat command, with slice "s2" appended (on Solaris x86:
    append "p0").
    # mount -F hsfs /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s2 /mnt

  • Re-claiming Linux partiton for Solaris

    Hi,
I installed my PC (acer TravelMate 260) as a dual boot (Linux & Solaris 10) which works fine. But now I find myself using Linux less and less so I would like to format its partition with ufs and mount it as /scratch or so. (The Solaris partition is a bit small and I start running out of space.)
    Can this be done?
Or do I really have to re-partition the drive into one big (primary) partition and re-install Solaris on that one?
    Cheers, Peter.
PS. Some things appear easier under Linux...

I don't think this is possible since Solaris uses one fdisk partition in which it uses slices to "split" it. But it can only use on of those fdisk partitions per harddisk.
What you could consider is checking what other filesystems Solaris supports (I'm pretty sure I read stories about it knowing about fat32) and simply use a Windows or Linux disk to repartition and change the Linux partition into a fat32 partition (not forgetting to layout the filesystem itself).

  • Linux Support in Solaris 10

So where is the LINUX support in the new Solaris 10?
I downloaded the free Software Express for Solaris x86 Platform (11/04) and installed it on a Dell 8600 P4 1.8 system. Fresh install on a new hard drive. Then I tried to install the new FireFox web browser for Linux. Received the following error: Cannot find /lib/ld-linux.so.2. I was logged in as Root. Ran a search of the entire system and found nothing using pattern ld-linux*.
    ED :(

So where is the LINUX support in the new Solaris 10?It does not exist (at least not outside of Sun).
There are rumours that it will be available in one of the Solaris
10 update releases. In case S10 FCS will be available in
january/february 2005, and the rumour are true, I'd expect that
the linux support will be available somewhere in june 2005 (??
    S10 Update 1) or october 2005 (?? S10 Update 2). (Pure
speculation be me, I don't know the schedule)
I downloaded the free Software Express for Solaris

#This is a working production system with 2 146.81GB mirrored hard disks. There is no disk error for either local or external 2TB Western Digital USB disks that works on Windows 7 or XP.
Any idea on what else to look for?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jack

    Hi All,
Looks like it was a driver / incompatibility / unsupported issue since 2 other much smaller USB keys (Lexar USB Flash Drive – 32GB, SanDisk Cruzer Colors – 4GB) were successfully mounted automatically by volfs service as follows:
    # df -h
Filesystem             size   used  avail capacity  Mounted on
    /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0      5.1G   4.0G   1.1G    78%    /
    /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s7      129G   1.7G   126G     2%    /export/home
    /vol/dev/dsk/c3t0d0/unnamed_rmdisk#1:c   3.7G   2.4G   1.3G    65%    /rmdisk/unnamed_rmdisk#1
/vol/dev/dsk/c2t0d0/unnamed_rmdisk:c    29G    96K    29G     1%    /rmdisk/unnamed_rmdiskIt also appears that the Device status of Not Ready from “iostat –En” below may not be correct either since both smaller drives are working fine:
    # iostat -En

It is necessary to install additional driver that came with the disk on Windows XP platform. However,
    Thanks again,
    Jack
