Moving from Developer to DBA

Hi ALL,
Our org has sun solaris and 10g db
I am a developer ,trying to move to dba in the organisation out of my interest...
and hence wants to know the following for the organisation database
I have access to sqlplus and can query the dictionary ....
My constraints are :
I do not have DBA privileges ie. sysdba.sysoper....
don't haev access to unix root ...
No friends(known person) in the DBA team
What home work have I done ?
1) installed rhel with 9i database
2)completed 2 of the 4 ora 9i cert papers.
3) constantly trying out few assignments from the oracle dba books
But knowledge of database in the organisation is paramount for my successful
transformation.....
Hence I have few questions ,which I need to find out for the organisation...
Q) How are is undo managed ?
ie
rollback segments or undo segments
Q) what different types of tablespace exists?
are they using local or dictionary tbs ?
are they Oracle managed tbs or are they manually created ones ?
Q)what type of authentication is used ?
password file authentication / os authentication or network authentication ?
these are a few questions I would liek to know

App Fails Moving from Development to Prod for Identical Environments

All,
I know everyone says* this but, we really need resolution to this problem ASAP. We are in a situation wherein APEX Applications are thoroughly QAed and then, only after being delivered to Production, the same JavaScript calls that succeeded in Dev are Failing in production.
Some Facts:
1. APEX Version 4.1.1.00.23 Both Environments
   A. Dev was taken to 4.1.1.00.23 via two patches (12920544 and 13331096)
   B. Production was installed as 4.1.1.00.23 directly
2. DB Versions
    A. Dev - 11.2.0.1
    B. Prod - 10.2.0.4
3. PL/SQL Web Toolkit
   A. Dev - 10.1.2.0.8
   B. Prod - 10.1.2.0.6 (Upgraded from 10.1.2.05 using supplied owa in APEX install media)
4. Both using the Oracle HTTP Server from FUSION MIDDLEWARE 11g with mod_plsql plugin.
The Issue:
Using Internet Explorer 9 (works for Chrome, Safari and FireFox), the following is an example of a JavaScript call that fails only in Production.
dropDownMenuDiv = document.getElementsByClassName("dropDownMenu") [0];I am sure someone will respond to this post stating that it just isn't possible that the same code is failing in one environment and not in the other. Therefore, to explicitly test this, I wrapped the above code in this "if" block:

   alert( 'getElementsByClassName is NOT Supported' );
}The EXACT same code executed in Dev and Prod (app export/import). In Dev, it works fine. In Production, it produces the "getElementsByClassName is NOT Supported" message box.
I know that there are some IE Specific workarounds for just this sort of thing but, I also know that IE9 should support this method. In fact, it is supporting this very method when the application is invoked in the Dev environment.
Can anyone please provide a reason/work around for this issue?

Transportation requests moved from development server to Quality,But changes not seen

Hi Folks,
We made some configurations in Marketing area and moved corresponding TR's from Dev server to QAS,but am not able to see the changes in QAS while testing.Where all could I have gone wrong?

Mean while can you tell me if we have not moved them in proper order the changes wont reflect or something?
Not moving the TRs in order, will some times lead to serious problems in production system. To the extent that all business activities would come to stand still. Hence, it's very important to move the TRs in their respective sequence.
Maintain details of TR and their sequence in an excel sheet.

Moving from Development to Production

Dear all, I need to move several portal objects (pages, content areas, users, applications) from a development environment to a brand new production environment. OS are the same (Sun Solaris 2.7), RDBMS are the same (8.1.7), Portal are the same (3.0.6.6.5). I dont want to use portal tools such as contexp, pageexp and so on. Can I export portal30, portal30_sso, portal30_public schemas and import in thenew db? Does it work? Please, any suggestion/help is really appreciated.

What I understood is that I need to go to Extras>>Export project..Correct ?
But will it export the entire thing i.e project/subproject/object in the file ? or I need to first goto LSMW workbench menu first then select All project objects which will show me the 3 nodes and then placing cursor on each node I have to export each one..
I hope I have put up my doubt correctly..
In short do I need to export/import each node i.e project/subproject/object separately or the action Extras>>Export will export entire thing ?/

Questions on Analyzer Upgrade and Moving Analyzer Reports from Development to Production

Hi,We run Analyzer 5.0.3. We are planning to go to Analyzer 7.2. Did any body go thru this upgrade? If so, what is your opinion and tips that may help. Also, we never had Analyzer development environment. We are planning on having Analyzer development environment. In our installation, all of the Analyzer reports are centrally developed based on user requests. Once we have development and production at the same Analyzer version, if a report is developed in the development system, how can the report be mirateed/moved from development to production system?Thank you for your help,Prasant

Probleming when moving from QA to Development

Hi Guys,
We moved all objects of our IR and ID from Development to QA by exporting them as TPZ files.
Now, no matter what change we make in our QA box to our IR and ID objects, they internally seem to be refering to the objects available on Development.
Both Development and QA share the same SLD.
Can they be made to be independent of the other? To make any changes, do we have to make a change in our Development Box and then move them to QA by exporting them as TPZ files.
Need your ideas and opinion.

Error occurred while transporting request no. from development to productio

I have created a zreport (having a request number ) and activate the zreport ..
While transporting this request from development to production I face the error zreport is inactive .But when I check zreport in development server it is active ..

Hello,
Can you ask the basis person to check the transport log and tell as to what error has occured. Most of the time transport fails if one of the dependent object fails to move. For example you have structure that you have used for table declaration in your prog. You moved the program but the structure was not moved. When Tranported , the program will result in an error and saying Struct not present.
What you can do immediately is to go on your prodcution server and try to do a syntax check of the program. I am sure it will show some error and from that you can carry out issue resolution. Also ask the basis person to hvae a look in to ur transport(he can see the same via STMS Tcode).

Best practice for moving from a G5 to a new Mac with SL

I am receiving my new iMac today (27") and am very excited
However I want to move over using the best practices to assure that I remain excited and not frustrated
My initial thoughts are to boot it up and doe the initial set up - to move my iPhoto library over and to use migration assistance to move the rest of my data files
Then to install all of the extra software that I can find the packages for from the original installation disks
And then finally to use migration assistant again to move over any software that I can not find original disks for (I've moved from Mac to Mac to Mac over and over and some of the software goes back to OS 9 (and won't run anymore I guess)
Is this a good way
OR
will I mess up doing it this way
OR
am I spending far too much time worrying about moving old problems over and would be better off to just turn MA loose and let it do its thing form the beginning?
BTW - mail crashes a lot on my existing system - pretty much everything else seems ok - except iPhoto is slow - hoping that the new Intel dual core will help that

Migration Assistant is not a general file moving tool. MA will migrate your Applications and Home folders transferring only your third-party applications. MA will transfer any application support folders required by your applications, your preferences, and network setup. You do not have a choice of what will be migrated other than the above. MA cannot determine whether anything transferred is compatible with Snow Leopard. I recommend you look at the following:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications

Browser and other plug-ins
Contextual Menu Items

In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.

Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.

In general you are better off reinstalling any third-party software that is PPC-only. Otherwise update your software so it's compatible with Snow Leopard.
Do not transfer any OS 9 software because it's unsupported. You can transfer documents you want to keep.
Buy an external hard drive to use for backup.

Not updating Prompts when report is moved from Dev to Prod

Hi,
I have a report In development which uses a Prompt ( Dynamic Lov) pointed to an existing prompt group.
When this report is moved to production the prompt does not give any values as the it is not pointed to any prompt group.
Could any one help me why the prompt is not being updated when it is moved from DEV to PROD.

2.DMS uploading from Development server to Production server[GO LIVE]

Is it all document type [dms] which r created in development server, these will transefer from development to production server by [uploading]transport request.

I think for moving customization request to production, u dont need help of basis, if u have authorization then u can transport the request.
Before moving first identify which are the request number u want to transport and release them using t code SE10 in development server.
Go to production server, execute STMS t code for importing the request from devp server.
Once ur request moved to production successfully then all customization will be available in production system except number ranges and class and characterstics.
If ur using classification system, then create class and characterstics in production system it self.

Reports with prompting stop working when moved from Crystal10 to crystal 11

Issue:
We are having trouble with Crystal Reports XI. It appears that the Crystal 10 runtime included the ability to process reports that used prompting. If we run the same report with the Crystal XI runtime, it fails.

Our Configuration:
We use Merge Modules that install Crystal Reports through the browser via a CAB file that we created. It runs a setup executable
The setup executable project that installs CR XI uses the following Merge Modules:
CrystalReports11_RDC_Reportengine.msm
CrystalReports11_RDC_Runtime.msm
CrystalReports11_HotFix_Merge.msm (This is contrived by us from one of your hot fixes)
Observation:
When the install is finished, the folder structure under u2026. Crystalviewers11/prompting do not have any files like they do if we install the development environment.
Question:
What do we need to do to correct this situation?
*why the reports with*
*prompting stops working when it is moved from a Crystal 10 to Crystal 11*
*environment. I believe that it has something to do with Merge Modules*
*because the files under the prompting folder do not populate with the*
*merge module like they do with the full install of Crystal Reports.*

We have JDK 1.6 installed. The License Merge Module is not related to
this issue.
The files under \Program Files\Common Files\Business
Objects\3.0\crystalreportviewers11\prompting are not being installed.
If we copy files, into this folder structure the reports work.
One of the Business Object's Merge Modules should install the files
there rather than just an empty folder structure.
I got was able to figure out how to enter a customer support message.
They said that they could not support us because we were not on CRXIR2
(Crystal Reports 11 Release 2).
I found a download for CRXIR2SP4 (same thing service pack 4).
I installed it the Merge Module names changed to include a "_5"
Was:
CrystalReports11_RDC_Reportengine.msm
CrystalReports11_RDC_Runtime.msm
CrystalReports11_HotFix_Merge.msm (This is contrived by us from one of
your hot fixes)
Now:
CrystalReports11_5_RDC_Reportengine.msm
CrystalReports11_5_RDC_Runtime.msm
CrystalReports11_5_RDC_License.msm (should have been included)
*CrystalReports11_HotFix_Merge.msm (not needed anymore)
I will try to put a installer together with these. If this work there
will be some complexity around uninstalling the old one and installing
the new one.

Moving from dev to prod -- code no longer works

I'm moving my app from development (running on Oracle 10g) to production (running on Oracle 9i)
This page validation code (Function body returning boolean) returns an error

I'm having trouble figuring out why -- unless it's the different versions of the database?

I'm looping through a collection to validate the entry before moving onto the next page. I automatically present 7 rows in a grid that the user can fill in (7 fixed types of transaction, then begin date, end date, amount.) I just want to make sure they've filled in an amount on ANY line before moving on to the next page which gives an "Are you sure?" type of screen.
Any other suggestions how to do this?
I have a second validation after this that validates date ranges and isn't working either, but I figure if I can lick the simpler one the second one likely has the same problem, which appears to be how I'm referencing the fields in the collection?

Transport from Development to Qualtiy

Hi,
Could anyone let me know the steps that needs to be followed while transporting the objects from Development to Qualtiy.
We are using PI 7.1
I had followed these steps:
In the Enterprise Service Builder --> Tools ---> Export Design Objects ---> I gave the software component version, Mode (specified as Transport using CTS) and then selected all the objects that needs to be moved to Quality.
then i checked in the Transport Organizer and this request was present.
So in SAP logon for Development PI i gave SE10 and released the requests.
But then how to import these items which i released in development.
Could anyone let me know the step by step process required to move the objects from dev to Quality

Moving from Bridge to Lightroom, when adding existing files on hard drive, will metadata transfer? Should I choose embed sidecar in file handling or will it automatically happen if I choose standard?

Moving from Bridge to Lightroom. Will metadata in existing files be recognized by Lightroom, and should I select embed+sidecar when adding files to library for the first time.

CHRIS - you are exactly right about my FUTURE workflow. What I'm trying to figure out now is how to best handle images already processed. My import should be OK based on the way I have duplicates in separate directories, BUT I'm wondering how to avoid seeing all of these duplicates in LR when I search by keyword, etc.? I guess I can somehow flag the RAW files and only get them in my results.
One question though - Stacks, etc. sounds great for the LR processed images. But what about variations based on processing in Photoshop after the LR Develop stage? I guess in this case I will just have to keep duplicate images if I have multiple versions from my PS work?
ISAAC - Thanks for clarifying that LR will recognize my XMP files from Bridge. What about the opposite direction . . . if I edit something in LR and capture this via XMP, it won't prohibit Bridge from recognizing XMP info if I access a file via Bridge, will it?
ALSO - Do you know where I can find info about tracking via XMP vs. the central database? You mentioned a couple of valid points, but I'm not sure I have a full handle on the pros/cons of these options.
