Moving virtual machine Pagefiles to seperate VHD for exclusion by DPM

Hi,
I have read the MS documentation regarding excluding pagefile churns from virtual machines to increase performance of backups and reduce storage space required and I would like to implement this within our environment.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj721498.aspx
However, when I move the pagefiile from the system disk onto a seperate VHD I get the following warning:
"If you disable the paging file or set the initial size to less than 400 megabytes and a system error occurs, Windows might not record details that could help identify the problem. Do you want to continue?"
As I understand things this means that I may not get a crash dump if a BSOD occurs. Is this correct, and if so how can I mitigate? How have others managed this scenario, do you just live with the fact that you won't get a dump file in the event of a problem?
Thanks in advance.

"If you disable the paging file or set the initial size to less than 400 megabytes and a system error occurs, Windows might not record details that could help identify the problem. Do you want to continue?"
AFAIK, all you need to do is to ensure that the separate drive does have a paging file on it, and then this message can be ignored.
Once the the page-file for a virtual machine is moved to a different VHD, you should exclude it from DPM by using the Set-DPMGlobalProperty cmdlet.
Otherwise, you can use backup tools that can do page-file exclusion in automatic fashion, like Veeam, for instance. We use the said software in our environments and pretty happy with the functionality it provides.

  • Moving Virtual Machine - Attach VHD with new VM

    Hi All,
We wants to migrate 2 virtual machines from one location to another location.
    Present Location :- Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (IBM X3400 M3)
VM 1 - Server 2008 R2 Standard with Additional Domain Controller and Exchange Server 2010 SP3 in size of 1.3 TB
VM 2 - Server 2008 R2 Standard with Primary Domain Controller in size of 50 GB
New Location :- Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (HP DL 380P Gen 8)
Last Sunday we have tried export and Import which is failed because I get to know that exported from Server 2008 R2 cant import on Server 2012 R2. It took 15 hours to export 1.3 TB VM :-( and it failed.
    Now my question is :-
Option A - Can we move our entire Datacetre to new location which I don't want to do
    OR
Option B - Just copy VHD and paste it on new server and create new VM and attach it. If I uses this option than my VM with ADC with Exchange and VM with PDC will work or not? Because of Machine ID and hardware will get changed.
or any other you can suggest. Exchange and DC on risk and I am not an expert of Exchange Server and Domain controller.
    Thanks for Help

    Hi Server.Tech,
    >>Last Sunday we have tried export and Import which is failed because I get to know that exported from Server 2008 R2 cant import on Server 2012 R2. It took 15 hours to export 1.3 TB VM and it failed.
As Brian mentioned , if there is no snapshot , copy vhd then attach it to a  new VM is quick and easy.
If snapshot exists and you want to keep it , you may need to use server2012 as "bridge" for export/import .
For details please refer to following link:

  • Virtual machine VHD file is missing the "Virtual Machine" Security group from ACL

    Hey All,
Doing support work for a client and they are unable to take snapshots from certain vm's. I think this is down the VM not having the virtual machines security group within its ACL instead is seems to just have two GUIDs. to me if looks like the vm's have
been moved and imported or something like that but was obviously not done correctly.
When taking a snapshot they get a general access denied error
Does anyone know a quick way to add the virtual machines security group back into the ACL, I did find some powershell commands however this errored stating I could not change the owner of the group.
I'll keep looking but if someone knows a quick fix for this I would appreciate it. One other thing I had thought of was turning the vm off, The creating a new Virtual machine and attaching the VHD as the new VM? Would this work?
    thanks in advanced

    Hi Dunn2010,
Yes , please try to copy the VHD then create a new virtual machine and attach the replication .
If it is possible please try to find the relevant Error messege of your question in event log and post it here .
Any further information please feel free to let us know.

  • Cannot start Hyper-V virtual machine

    Hi,
I have a Windows 2008 Server. It has been now upgraded to Windows 2012. Everything was working fine. But, now I turned off the virtual machine and copied the VHD file to another drive for backup. After this, I am not able to start the old virtual machine.
(The VHDs are in place. I only copied them) However, two another virtual machines are running now without any problem. While trying to start, I am getting the error "the operation cannot be performed while the object is in its current state". These are
    critical server. Any quick thoughts?
    Thanks
    Tom Jacob

    Hi,
If possible please restart the Hyper-V host server, then check whether still has such issue.
If issue still there, launch Event Viewer, check Hyper-V related logs. Post the logs for further troubleshooting.
And I notice you mentioned turned off the virtual machine, do you mean the VM running well in the past? (I mean after you upgrade server to Windows server 2012)
Can you export the VM now? Export it then delete the VM from Hyper-V, import the VM again and check the result.
For more information please refer to following MS articles:

  • Can a virtual machine created on one server run on any other server?

    Hello Community
If you have 7 Servers (named "Server1" ... "Server7") all running WS2012 R2 server Standard Edition,
which you get to create 2 Virtual Machines (using Hyper-V) at no extra cost.
        The question is:
Knowing that each server has its own IP address and may even be on a different subnet(s)
or the same subnet, if you create 2 virtual machines on  (for example) "Server3"  will those virtual
machines be able to run on any of the other 6 servers?
        Thank you
        Shabeaut

Unless this is some trick question then yes you can.

  • "Installing extensions on virtual machine..." does not complete on Azure VM

When creating VM using my custom disk, I encountered the same issue as the one mentioned in this post(http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mast/archive/2014/06/18/azure-vm-provisioning-stuck-on-quot-installing-extensions-on-virtual-machine-quot.aspx). I can’t
resolve my problem by following the steps of the post.
    Here is the context:
Before uploading the disk, I prepare my Ubuntu VM by following this post(http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/virtual-machines-linux-create-upload-vhd-ubuntu/) in which there is a step “sudo apt-get install walinuxagent”.
When creating VM, the portal is stuck in "Installing extensions on virtual machine...”.
I can’t SSH to the VM.
I checked the status of VM agent using PowerShell, it shows ‘GuestAgentVersion: Unknown’ and ‘Status: NotReady’.
Could you kindly help me out?

    Hi Hulu;
Thank you for your post. Apologies for the late response. From a support perspective the way forward would be to open up a support ticket as we would need to do get the
need subscription id, deploymend id and vm name for further troubleshooting I encourage you to do the same.
    Please refer to
this documentation on how to open a support ticket. Hope this helps.

  • Remote Desktop Licensing on a virtual machine

I want to move a small business to a hosted solution. If all applications live on a virtual machine then the best way for users to access them would be via remote desktop. Looking through Azure documentation I do see that RDP licenses are not included and
have to be purchased separately, I understand that part. What I cannot find is this:
Can I just configure my VM to be the license server and then purchase and install RDP licenses on it?
Different documentation keeps talking about having to do a separate agreement with SPLA or integrating with existing infrastructure. I do not want to integrate anything, if we make this move then the only server or servers the company uses will be the VM,
on-site PCs will not even logon to AD but strictly do RDP. The entire server and AD infrastructure will only live on Azure and it would be very nice to just install necessary licenses without having to do separate agreements and jumping through hoops.
    Thank you
    Vassili

    Hi Vassili3,
As per my research and experience Subscriber Access Licenses (SALs) to multiple tenants is via the Microsoft Service Provider Licensing Agreement (SPLA) program.
The main prerequisite I see is to Create a basic desktop hosting service deployment in Azure Infrastructure Services. See
Microsoft Azure Desktop Hosting Reference Architecture Guide
    and the
Microsoft Azure Desktop Hosting Deployment Guide.
For more information about licensing restrictions that are related to Remote Desktop Services in Microsoft Azure, see

  • Known Issue: Windows Emulators Are Not Supported When Visual Studio Installed in a Virtual Machine (Windows 10 Insider Preview SDK and tools, April 2015 release)

If you install Visual Studio 2015 with the Windows 10 Mobile emulators in a virtual machine, setup will succeed but the emulators will not be available as valid debug targets.

The Windows Emulators require a physical machine that runs Windows 8.1 (x64) Professional edition or higher, and a processor that supports Client Hyper-V and Second Level Address Translation (SLAT). The emulators will not run when Visual Studio is installed
    in a Virtual Machine (VM).
The emulators for Universal Windows app development work best with Windows 10.

  • Monitor profiling & ICC profile management in VMware virtual machines?

    Greetings,
I'm successfully running Photoshop CC in Windows 7 on bare metal PCs.  To support that, I profile/calibrate my monitors with Datacolor Spyder4Elite and print with Qimage.  Photoshop, Spyder4, and Qimage all create and/or install ICC profiles.  Does any/all of that function correctly within virtual machines hosted by VMware Workstation (v9.0.2, specifically)?  Datacolor's Spyder4Elite, for example, relies upon periodic reloading of the LUT (Look-Up Table) of the graphics adapter.  The other apps I mention ask Windows to use ICC profiles.  Can I successfully move all of these workflow elements into virtual machines?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

No, actually the System Default stayed the same, but the ACER profile showed up in the Devices panel.  However, [ ] Use My Settings was NOT checked, implying they found some way to install the profile that's outside the normal configuration settings somewhere between the Advanced and Devices level configuration.
The fix is to check the [ ] Use My Settings box, add the profile one wants to use in the Devices panel, and [Set as Default Profile].  This overrides the setting above.

    Hi,

  • RMI server crashing the Virtual Machine

I am writing an enterprise RMI service at work and it has been crashing at seemingly random points and in-frequently. It is not actually crashing as such, because I have added a shutdown hook and that is getting called before it exits. I know for sure that it is not a system.exit() call because I have prevented all system.exit() calls in the security manager. I also have put in very tight memory management and an extended heap so I don't think its a memory issue either. Frequent calls to freeMemory() show that there is no memory leakage and that everything seems to be being cleaned up correctly.
I am using the IBM 1.3 virtual machine on a linux box for the server and thus the calls to the garbage collector are working nicely and when requested.
The crashing is happening at seemingly random points and I have covered all my public methods with try....catch blocks that catch Throwable, and it doesn't seem to be an exception. Code that 19 out of 20 times will run fine, crashes on the 20th run etc.
What I am wondering is - has anyone had similar problems and do you know how to fix it?
My other thought is that perhaps it is a problem with the IBM virtual machine, and I am thus going to try running things through the Sun 1.3 virtual machine to see if I get any different results.
Any insights or help from people developing similar services would be greatly appreciated (this is the first RMI service I have implemented).

    YES!!! I finally solved it..........
I put the monitoring code into the startup script - incidentally, on linux the shell variable is $? as opposed to $status.
Then I let it run and this morning it exited again and the error code was 130 - or Control-C.... This made no sense to me as the service was running on a linux box which I was monitoring through a telnet window on my Windows PC. And I know for sure that I wasn't pressing Control-C.
After talking to someone else at work I found out that they had heaps of problems running a resin server in a similar way (through a telnet window), and in the end it came down to the telnet window was sending things it shouldn't to the resin server and causing all sorts of problems. As soon as they ran it in the background, the problems disappeared.
So I ran it in the background and the problem has disappeared. Instead, to monitor the service I just did a tail -f on the log file and every half hour or so the tail program running through the telnet window was just dying mysteriously...... ha ha ha ha
Thanks a lot for your help EJP, I wouldn't have been able to sort it out without your suggestions. And I have learnt a lot more about RMI in tracking this bug down. Only problem is that the clients were here for a demo last week and had it exit once while they were running the client app......arg!!!
