MS Project client vs. PWA: Who needs what in my organisation?

Dear Forum,
I am currently rolling out Project Server 2010 and due to a limited number of MS Project Client licences available I need to manage the allocation of user licences carefully. In this course some questions came to my mind:
Who in my organisation needs the client and who can do with the PWA?
My rule of thumb and approach for peolple needing the client would be all People who actively need to schedule a Project and create and maintain a Project schedule. Linemanagers and Teammembers who only need to view the Project can
do with the PWA.
Certainly the possibilities of introducing Standards are in my opinion greater with PWA (as I views and fields can be standardised easier). But creating a full schedule with PWA? I am not so sure...
What are your opinions and advice on this Topic?

I think you are on the right track. In general PWA is more suited for light weight schedule management, Tasks, Timesheets and collaboration. The Web Schedule management became much better with 2013 and Project Online, but I still recommend Project Pro for
heavy schedule management.
This link gives you the key differences between both versions (it is for 2013, but 'most' of it applies to 2010 as well).
http://blogs.office.com/2013/05/29/managing-project-schedules-in-project-professional-vs-project-online-pwa/
Having said that, you can attach templates to Enterprise project types, and let full schedules be created in PWA, and just let them be 'edited' t suit the project.

  • Filtering Users in Who Does What Report

Hello! I'm using a shared resource pool, and we list out every staff member in the company. When I assign specific people from the pool to my project, and run the "Who Does What" report, I end up with people who are not allocated to my project
(they are part of other projects, but given the timeframe, they end up in the report).
Is there a way to filter out users so only allocated users will be shown in the report?
    Thanks!

    Assuming you have MSP2010,
The who does what report uses, or refers to, the Resources - Work filter. You can see this by clicking project, reports, custom, and you will see the complete list of available reports, then select the who does what report and click edit.
This is the same as for views, tables, filters, groups when you go to more views, more tables, more filters, more groups.
You get the full list and can edit, copy etc.
It is best not to change the original filter or report. Better housekeeping is to copy them both, give the copies new, distinctive names such as "AA My Resources - Work 01" and "AA My Who Does What 01". Then you can do what you like to
these, while the originals are preserved in their original state.

  • What client software do I need to use oracle? I am a student teaching mysel

Hi, this is probably below eveyrone else but I am a complete novice with oracle and have never used it. But my teacher assigned me to install this on a SLES10 Linux machine and populate its database. My friend is going to help me witht he later but we just barely managed to install the majore database software on saturday adn that to like 8 hours for us. But now I hear we need to install some kind of client software to really use the database we installed. I mean we can type in some kind of address and change settings but what client software do we need? I look for the client but like 20 diffrent versions pop up and I'm not sure what to use. If this helps heres what computer it would be on.
Laptop, on a Sles 10 Linux OS which is running of of VirtualBox. We downloaded and installled the latest oracle database software. 11. So now what?
Please if you reply email me at
    [email protected]

    Hi ,
What sort of student you are ? I meant.. are you going to study DB administration or Development.?
IF DB Admin, you can use the sqlplus commmand line tool to study administration or the Enterprise manager database control provided with oracle. You can configure that.
If for development, you can use the free tool from oracle -> sql developer or you can use thrid party tools like toad...

  • VBA XML Ribbon now rendering in Project Client 2013 (version: 15.0.4569.15.04)

    Hi,
What I’m trying to do is to add XML ribbon to Project Client 2013 using VBA code. I have a method in my VBA project (mpp file) under “ThisProject”. When this project is open, it passes the xml ribbon to ActiveProject.SetCustomUI (“My XML
ribbon content HERE”). I can break point and see the call is being made but ribbon is not visible on the Project Client 2013.
This ribbon works in only one computer (in Project Client 2013). Right now I have this file stored as a local MPP file, but eventually I have to move this code to Project Server (global-check-out location). There are no error or any issues
    that I can think.
Why does this work in one computer but not in other three computers? Is My XML schema and the format correct for Project Client 2013? What kind of permissions does Ribbon requires and how can I check them?
Below is my VBA/XML ribbon code:

  • TS2756 How do i see who and what deivces are connected to my personal hotspot wifi

I have an IPhone 4 it is up to date on software, but when i try to see who is connected to my hotspot it doesn't allow me to see it just shows me that there are a couple connections but not who or what.... is there anyway to see these?? Thanks

In AirPort Utility 6.1, click on the AirPort Exteme icon, then look for Wireless Clients. Click on the listing of each device just to the right of Wireless Clients and another box will open to display the following for each client:
    Name
    IP address
    Hardware Address
    Signal Quality
    Data Rate
    Other stuff
Unfortunately, there is no convenient "list" of all conneced devices. You have get details on each one individually.
I don't know how to find an Ethernet client if you need that info. I think Apple left this out.

  • Unable to open/edit project in project professional form PWA(project server 2010)

i have been working perfectly and opening my projects with project professional from PWA
All of a sudden,i get this error: no permission to read enterprise global file when trying to edit my projects in project professional from the PWA
i have also tried opening the project from project professional directly and it says (you do not have sufficient permissions to  perform the requested action)
please what is the cause of this issue and what can i do to resolve it?

    Hello kehinde,
The cause of this problem is somebody changed something.
To resolve, I would clear out the cache to see if that resolves anything.
Then, I would reboot system and see if that resolves.
If still no go, then I would look into security settings, and start doing some detective work.  I keep a version of project server in a separate instance, that is completely out of the box, so I can have a reference point for settings.
If still not solution, then I would resave the global file settings.
    Cheers!

  • Project Server 2013: I am using Project Server Permission Mode and need help with permission assignments?

    Hi
Project Server 2013: I am using Project Server Permission Mode and need help with permission assignments?
How can I change Permissions for the individual users to see specific projects or all projects in project center and to see specific quick launch items?
    For Example: if i have 4 users, A, B, C and D. what i want is:
User A can see everything and act as a project manager or Admin.
User B can view all projects in project centre but can change the schedule or resource assignment etc.
User C can only act as approver of projects and can view all projects in project centre.
User D can only view specific projects for which permissions are given.
can i have some expert help in sorting and understanding permission modes... as i was playing with project server mode permissions and can't figure out how to apply the above scenario to set of my user.
    Thanks in Advance
    Cheers

    Ajay Kumar

    Hi Ajay,
Please refer to this link for detailed explanations about PS2013 security model.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197638(v=office.15).aspx
Actually, it will take a couple of days to explain in detail the security model that is a fundamental and tricky aspect of every PS implementation. But basically, you NEVER set permissions for a single user. You have groups in which your insert users. Groups
define "what users can do". Then you associate groups to a corresponding category. Categories define "what user can see". Thus the association of a group with a category will set "what the user can do on the objects he can see". Then, for more advanced security
level, you can use the RBS that will consist in "branches" in which you'll insert users. Based on those branches, you'll customize categories to fine-tune what user can see (for projects and resources) depending on the RBS branch and level.
I'd advice you to start "playing" in a test environment with the default categories/groups that might probably cover your need.
    Concerning your 4 users:
user A : add him to the "administrator" group. Be careful that you're mentionning either project manager or administrator, which are 2 groups/categories with totally different permissions level.
user B : basically can see everything and change everything? it could be in the project manager group, assuming that there are no project visibility restrictions on the category via the RBS.
user C : waht do you mean by "approver"? Workflow approvals? Then it will be the portfolio manager group. Task update or timesheet approval? Then it is another long topic: please refer in the documentation to the "status manager" and "timesheet manager"
concepts. There are not related to the security model. In a few words, the status manager is the owner of the project plan, is defined for each task and approves tasks updates. The timesheet manager is an attribute defined for each resource in its parameters
    and approves resource timesheet.
user D : you have to define which permission level must be given to this user. Basically it could be a team member that will see only projects he's in the project team. Note that team member cannot interact with the project plan in another way than submitting
timesheets and/or tasks updates which must be approved.
Once more, those are large and complex subjects that require a deep dive into your business model and tons of tests in a test environment.
    Hope this helps.

  • IPod Info for those who need it

Just thought I'd give some help to those who need it.
    - For those who are having trouble with their ipods accepting some videos and not others, try shortening the names of the video files. As long as the video files are in the proper format, this should clear up that issue.
    - For those who want to get the songs off of your ipod without having to worry about the iTunes one-way syncing issue the following programs will help you with that:
    PodPlus
    iPod Agent
    - For those who are just curious, here are the size incriments for data:
    Bit
    Byte
    Kilobyte
    Megabyte
    Gigabyte
    Terabyte
    Pentabyte
I've got the 5th gen iPod and after a little finessing, I think I've got it all pretty much figured out. So, if anyone has questions, gimme a shout. Or maybe you've got some cool ideas I can use!
    5th Gen Windows XP Pro
      Windows XP Pro

What is an ideal average setting for my homemade iMovies?
Settings for your iMovie for what? If your are talking about conversion to an iPod compatible format, which format? Are you more concerned with quality or quantity?
First, what's the best, fastest and easiest way to convert these iMovies to the H.264 (is that done through iMovie or QT Pro or both) and what other settings (audio for one) should I be using besides the standard 30 fps ?
Your are using the same QT tools whether you convert directly from iMovie or indirectly via QT Pro using a reference file. (I.e., the only time you save is the time it takes to write the reference file itself.)
Define what you mean by best.
The "Movie to iPod (320x240)" option is the fastest in terms of programming your conversion but the slowest in terms of time it take for processing. The "Movie to MPEG4" option is slower/harder to program for a single pass H.264 encode, but takes half the time to process as the dedicated H.264 option. MPEG4 video options (single pass and 2-pass modes) are faster than H.264 codec. Audio options are the same for both H.264 and MPEG4 formats -- AAC LC. I personally would stick with the 44.1 kbps sampling rate and 128 kbps data rate for audio but you could take it up to 48 kbps at 160 kbps if you want. As to frame rate, I would stick with the current (original) setting of your source. 30 (29.97) fps provides the smoothest flow of motion. You could, of course, try 24 or even 15 fps in some cases to see if it is acceptable. Dropping below 12 fps would probably be unacceptable to most people. But you're the producer and director here, so you have to make up your own mind.

  • TS2755 I want to remove imessage completely--how can I do this? This is a terrible feature for parents who need to monitor usage.

Hi - I am a parent who needs to know when and who my child is texting . Imessage is a terrible feature that I want to remove or at least block.  What can I do to remove this so that my child doesn't have it as an option?

To turn Messages off, you'll need to turn it off in the Messages setting, and then set up Restrictions and disallow changes to accounts. Otherwise your child can just turn it right back on.  For more information, see:

This presumes that your iPhone is running iOS 6. The option to disable Messages is not present in iOS 5, if my memory is correct.

  • Impact of changing a Project Name on PWA 2013

    Hi Ladies and Gents
I know that if I change the project name of a current project on the Name field on the PDP it will update the Project Plan name. I also know that I  need to change the project site name and I know what the workaround is to ensure that the project plan still
    associates with the project site.
What I want to ask, is there any other impact to historic data if I make a change to the above
    Have an awesome day
    Willem

    Hello Willem,
Changing a project name will be fine as the system works off the GUIDs. Test this process on a test project before so that you are satisfied this works for you.

I just got my MIDI to USB cable, fired up Garageband.  I clicked the basic lessons, tried Play.  But the lesson guy is playing.  I'm the one who needs the practice, not him.  Please help.  I don't know what I'm doing.

    G35Guy:
Well, if that's the case, you must have a different finish on yours than I have on mine. Either that or you are extrordinarily careful when using it. Mine literally scratches when using a microfibre cloth. I would really like to know whether yours is somehow different. It would really piss me of if some people got a good quality exterior that doesn't scratch and some of us got the opposite. Did you try holding your player under a light to see if there is anything. You may just be looking at it in bad lighting. I find it hard to believe, unless your unit has a different type of plastic cover, that it hasn't received any type of scratches. Can you take a picture of it's It probably seems as though I don't believe you. That's not the case. Its just that I was so careful not to scratch it last night and it got scratched anyway. I have read of similar experiences by others who have the Vision:M as well.
I wish I could return mine and get a different color, it really upsets me that a $300 item that is meant to be hand held and used heavily scratches this easily!! If anyone from creative is reading this, I would like to know what you plan to do about it! I didn't pay all of that money to have this player look like Sh*t when I am only using it the way it was intended and am being very careful at that!

  • After updating - safari is messed up, ANYONE who knows what to do? :(

After updating the newest Office update as well as safari (middle of November 2007) I lost all my emails in my inbox and every subfolder (entourage), my messenger icons disappeared and now I can't even open Safari properly, (which is the main problem) When trying to open Safari, I get the, "The program ended unexpectedly" and my options are to try again or send a report. I've send a report SO many times, but that doesn't help me, and I'm not sure Apple takes these reports into consideration......Doesn't seem like it anyway.
Are there ANYONE who knows whats going on, what to do, etc. And might I add, I am not a technical genius so I don't get all the postings people have made about extensions, hexi- whatever, applications and so on. I just know that nothing is like it used to be
As for my Entourage, that had something to do with the update and me not clicking on the right button. BUT when researching a bit, I found out that I could get my old emails back by finding them somewhere in some profile whatever-BUT there was nothing there! And my messenger icons, well, they just disappeared.
I am NOT a happy Mac user at the moment, I can't call support because I don't have that Apple Care Plan and my iBook is old...
SO in conclusion, does anyone know what to do? Safari is the most anoying malfunction. The other things I can live without
BUT if I hadn't installed Firefox a long time ago, I wouldn't be able to get online at ALL...

The same thing happened to me with Safari. I tried (as per the other thread on this topic) dumping the items in the Input Managers, but no luck. I've sent several crash reports in when it's happened, but it's obviously very frustrating, and who knows when a fix will appear?
Here's the latest crash report, just in case it helps:

Thank you. After two system restores and three program removals using the control panel I got itunes back.  I would feel better if Apple would include items you don't need options in installs so that the constant checking for what is not there would not create problems.  For me it was MobileMe associations. I never would have thought of Bonjour and (Quicktime - which I don't even use but did not remove just in case)
    Again, Thanks!.
