Msi k8n neo3 cool 'n' quiet & amd a64 sempron 2800+

nice forum! I hope you guys can help me out.
here's the deal.
I am what one would call a computer expert, but unfortunately I seem to miss something in this particular matter, unlike in other cases, which is very frustrating.
I personally own loads of MSI boards, most of which for amd64 systems, so I have experience with the drivers and utilities and I know how to get these systems up and running with cool 'n' quiet, except for this particular system. I know the cpu can't be to blame for this, since it supports cool 'n' quiet. I also have owned some other boards from other manufacturers (also amd64), so I'd like to think that I am aquainted with the technology.
msi k8n neo3 motherboard:
- bought this one three days ago
- came with bios version 1.05x (!!!)
- updated the bios to 1.5x (amongst others because of the sempron support)
- enabled the coolnquiet feature (OC options were enabled, settings to optimized, captain etc. etc. (what I usually do)).
- installed the drivers from the cd; the .inf driver was also installed (I saw a screen confirming that).
- put energy management to minimalized setting
- rebooted
and... nothing! well, except for the normal speed it should not be running on at 0% cpu load (1607 MHz).
tried installing the standard amd driver from the amd website; also nothing... I did come across this problem once before and then I had to conclude that the problem could be resolved by installing another amd a64 driver package that came from another manufacturer's motherboard cd (which should not be the problem of course, because this driver (just as the cpu) should be generic).
configuration:
- this board @ bios 1.5x
- amd 2800+ sempron (latest model) + boxed cooler
- 2x samsung ddr400 512mb (also tested it with corsair modules)
- dvd-drive
- couple of hard drives connected to pata/sata, no raid enabled.
- winxp-32 us. SP2
apart from this particular problem, the system works just fine.
who can help me out?

Thanks for your replies guys.

Appearently only Sempron 3000+ and higher support CnQ .
Some lower models ildes down to as litte as 14W so CnQ don't make much sense in those low power models.
Also if the multiplier is locked downwards CnQ can't work (E.g can you run 7*200 , and make it stick).
Well, appearently this specific model does support it, I know this because it says so on the box... so why isn't it working then?
For the sake of the argument, what if this CPU did support CnQ, what am I doing wrong then?
What I also can't figure out is why these CPU's, according to your statement, should be doing something like 14W in idle mode, whereas these cpu's basically aren't that different from normal amd64 cpu's, except for the support of x86-AMD64 and having a larger cache ; these fully featured amd64 cpu's need something like 80-90W in stressed mode, running on their normal clock speeds and do something like 32W when in CnQ-mode. How is that possible? Because of newer generation production processes with less nm-technology or something like that?

  • MSI K8N NEO3-F Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX

I must not have stated my problem clearly. When I built my computer I turned on the power from the back, and the case lit up. (power switch on PSU) I was excited because this was my first build. When the bios popped up, it did not detect my hard drive. I then shut down the computer. I resat the ATA cables heading to my hard drive. When I went to turn the computer back on, the PC wouldn't start. I tried resitting everything on my Computer. I tried using only one RAM, resat video card, CPU, and even tried resetting the cmos.
Eventually I found that if I pull the lithium battery from my motherboard, my computer will turn on. The computer will run without the battery, or if I resit the battery. The battery on a motherboard only deals with the bios and the time and such. It doesn't make any sense at all. I am going to test my powersupply tomarrow and then my video card on a laiter date. I have tried replacing the battery. Getting around this problem wass not hard, I have installed games that look phenomal. I was succesfully able to install my OS also. Resetting the bios on every load up is not fun.
My other recent problem has been with the video card though(this is why im going to test with another VC). When I resit the battery after shut down, and turn my PC back on, the Video Card over powers it self. For three minutes the monitor wont recognize my card and my card pushes as if it was running DOOM3. Finally it steadies out and the monitor turnes on. Please help me out if you have any good info for me. I'll try anything at this point. I'm not computer illeterate.
I am an Intern with TWC's IT departement. I am also going to school for computer science. The A++ side of computing I had never learned.
.......Every where I go with this problem, no one seems to know the answer. No one will even throw ideas at me. Someone please help me out
    Heres my PC:
    ASPIRE ATX-AS520W
    MSI K8N NEO3-F Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX
    AMD Athlon64 3200+
    Sapphire Radeon X800Pro
    Samsung Spinpoint 160GB
    2*512 MB Crucial Memory

MaYBE I'm not really understanding the problem here...Are you trying to use the switch on the PSU to begin the boot process?  If so, hopefully, you should continue to have trouble doing that, it's not supposeed to work that way.  If the computer starts with the power switch on the PSU there might be a problem with the CMOS jumper, jbat1, being in the wrong position...continue to post your changes and progress and someone will continue to help you, there's a lot of good heads around here, but there's a lot of guys with problems too...add as much of your configuration info to your signature as you can find out, that will help us help you as well...

  • Problems with MSI K8N-Neo3 and Command Queing.

I had some problems with two computers, based on the MSI K8N-Neo3 mainboard - they wouldn't boot into Windows after installing the drivers for the graphiccards. Before the breakdown of the forum, some people suggested that I was using to small PSUs. In the meantime I've solved the problem, by disabling the Command Queing feature in the drivers. Seems there may be a problem with the MSI board, and Maxtor SATA drives with Command Queing.
Key system components for the two computers:
    AMD Sempron 3000+
    MSI K8N-Neo3
    1 GB Kingston PC3200 DDR-SDRAM
MSI GeForce 6600GT or MSI GeForce 6600LE graphics
Maxtor 120 GB SATA disk (6L120M0)
    Sony DVD-RW drive
Anyway, I wanna say thanks for the quick answers...

Thats not what I read (assuming this is the same correct model)
    420W double unit
    DC O/P Load Max
    +5V 42 Amp.
    +12V 16 Amp.
    +3.3V 28 Amp.
    -5V 0.5 Amp.
    -12V 0.8 Amp.
    +5VSB 2 Amp.
Agreed that one is 420W, but is that it or not?

If you creat a signature (in profile) it will save you having to type your spec's  out each time or us looking for it. Use mine as a template.
What PSU are you using ? Can you list the power output ? (writen on side of psu)
Going from your specs you listed your graphics card is very hungery on power so I would suggest your psu isn't up to the job under load.
Post the spec and we will know for sure.

  • Is the MSI NX6600LE TD256E incompatible with MSI K8N Neo3 mainboard ?

    Hello people,
I have a very ugly problem here. I have an MSI K8N Neo3 mainboard here, that with PCI Express and AGP slots.
It was working fine for a while, so I dont think the mainboard itself is bad.
Originally, an Inno3D Geforce 6200 with Turbo Cache, was installed on that computer. However, in the past week the owner buyed a copy of Battlefield 2 to have some fun, he also buyed an MSI NX6600LE TD256E PCI Express graphic card to replace the Inno3D Geforce 6200 with Turbo Cache.
I got that PC here today, in order to install the new MSI Graphic card, and also install the game. Now comes the ugly part: I cannot get that card to work in that computer, and I don't know why.
At first I thought that the card was defective, so I took it out of that PC and installed it on my own PC, and the card works in my PC (see signature), and my PC's graphics card works fine on the other PC (the K8N Neo3). Even the old Inno3D card works fine.
Since the card works fine in my PC (I've used it while writing this post), and my PC's graphic card works fine in the other PC, as well as the old Inno3D card, the only thing left for me to think is that the NX6600LE TD256E card is not compatible with the K8N Neo3 board, but that seems too strange for me.
Can any one here tell me if there's some kind of compatibility problems between the MSI K8N Neo3 mainboard and the MSI NX6600LE TD256 Graphic card ?
    Any help is welcome,

    Update:
The card is compatible with the board. What was incompatible with the card, was a little chip in the board (fried) which I didn't noticed during the first inspection of the board.
Curious thing is that it accepted other cards and not the NX6600LE, but in the end, not even my own NX6600 card, or any other PCIe card worked at all. I guess the little chip suffered some kind of damage due to power problems in the place where the computer was. With this in mind, an electrical technician will be sent to the place to verify the electrical installations for problems of any kind, so we can correct them and prevent future problems.
Back to the board thing,  a new K8N Neo4-F board has taken the place of the semi-toasted K8N Neo3 board. Also, and thanks to the hibrid design of the K8N Neo3, we will still be able to use it. The PCIe slot is dead for sure, but the AGR Slot still works well, so we'll use it for traditional desktop aplications, such as word processors, internet surfing, e-mail, document scanning and printing, etc, etc, etc...
Well, that's all. I just wanted you guys to know; so no one keeps looking for an an answer to this (now solved) mystery. For me this case is now closed, so if no one is interested into it, Admins... feel free to delete the entire thread
    Be well you all,
    Edwin

  • MSI K8N Neo3 how to install cool n quiet

can any one tell me how to install cool n quiet on k8n neo3.
is core center enough to do the job of cool n quiet.
Is my board is compatible with cool n quiet
I am using AMD athlon 2800+ and k8n neo3with MSI FX5200 VGA card

Refer to page 1-9 of your manual.
Enable the feature in the bios.
Select "minimal power management" in Windows power schemes.
You don't need to install core center for it to work, it just lets you visually know it's working.  AMD also has a small utility to visuallize the CPU throttlling.
To allow the CPU fan to automatically speed up or down, enable "smart CPU fan target" in the bios.
    Hope this helps.

  • MSI K8N Neo4 FI Compatible with AMD 3800+ X2?

    I just bought:
    MSI K8N Neo4 FI
    AMD Athlon 64 3800+ X2
    Gainwood 7800GT Golden Sample
    hec Pb-480PB 480W
Problem is that i don't get a picture when i start the computer.
Everything seems to work, all the cables are plugged in.
The gfx has power from the cable.
Can it be that the motherboard dosen't recognize the CPU, and that won't give my a picture?
    Help would be appreciated.

That should be enough to start the computer. It has two +12V rails, which are of good enough ampage.
Now it looks to me like it needs a newer BIOS version to recognise the CPU.
See: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=651&kind=1 I think this is your motherboard?!
You'll need another A64 CPU to flash the BIOS though.
Just to settle akhille's mind, you could also try a better PSU.

  • MSI K8N-Neo3 support of 90nm Sempron

    Hi there
Anyone tried the new 90nm AMD Sempron processor with K8N-Neo3 - i've got a few problems. The problems are related to the BIOS - when i use the 90nm Sempron 2800+, i can't see the CPU VID and CPU Ratio settings in the BIOS, they simply dissapears...
Another problem, i can't reach a FSB higher than 218 MHz on this board, and it's kind of sad - the Sempron i mentioned above, went to the max FSB on my old AOpen n250a, an early engineering sample...
Guees my only choice is to wait for a new BIOS version...

    Tydyt,
The question was about the Socket 939, which only work with the Neo2 and Neo4. If you have a Socket 754 it only work with the Neo and Neo3.
    Take Care,
    Richard
I think KIJ is talking about the incomplete support of 90nm Sempron . He uses a 90nm SP 2800+ , but cannot see the adjusting option
of CPU VID and ratios . And on the MSI website , the compatability of 90nm Sempron on K8N Neo3 is being tested , will MSI release a new
BIOS to let the users adjust CPU core voltage on 90nm Sempron ? ( The voltage-adjusting function on CoreCenter doesn't work .)

Yes, I noticed this behaviour also.  Moreover I would like to see a feature that enables you to create some kind of power profile.  A profile that says e.g: "don't minimize power until load 5 minutes less than 10". It's now all or nothing.....

  • K8N NEO2 cool and quiet problem

I noticed that when I enable cool and quiet, my CPU clock gets stuck at 1 GHz (5x multi), it will not go full speed even at max load. Does anyone have any ideas?

Default xp installation use processr.sys Microsoft signed as cpu driver .
With AMD installed cpu driver it updates to amdk8.sys Advanced Micro Devices signed .
As for why the driver states version 1.1.0.0 i wonder myself .
Think that the changes are in the inf/cat/installshield file ,thats what i think when looking at the revision history.
    Edit:
It is the file cpudriver.EXE which is 1.1.0.14 revision
    (http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/cpudriver.EXE)
The amdk8.sys file is still at version 1.1.0.0 .

  • Does Cool N Quiet + AMD Chip Driver = Video Card Overclocking?

For some odd reason, my 9800NP is automatically changing its clock rates on me.  Never down, only up.  Does N Quiet and/or the AMD Chip Driver impact your video card?  Right now it booted at 378/330 which is a 9800Pro.  I'm using the normal BIOS for a NP, but it does show up as a pro in the Display properties.  Any ideas?

I think the Cool N Quiet software doen't like RadLinker/RadClocker.  I enabled Cool N Quiet in the BIOS, but did not install the associated software. All better now!!

  • MSI K8N Neo3-FSR Support Semptron Processors?

    http://msicomputer.co.uk/products.aspx?product_id=703542
It states support only for Athlon 64 processors.
But how about AMD Semptron processors? Especially new Palermo (90nm) ones.
    AMD Sempron™ 2600+ (1600 Mhz, 128 Kb L2 Cache)
    AMD Sempron™ 2800+ (1600 Mhz, 256 Kb L2 Cache)
    AMD Sempron™ 3000+ (1800 Mhz, 128 L2 Cache)
    AMD Sempron™ 3100+ (1800 Mhz, 256 L2 Cache)
    AMD Sempron™ 3300+ (2000 Mhz, 128 L2 Cache)
This MB would give a nice upgrade path thanks to AGR-slot. But without support to Semptron processors you are stuck with 130nm Athlon 64 processors.
If someone could tell/find out is there already support for Semptrons or is it planned in next BIOS update, please let me know. Thanks.

    Thank you very much.
I will pass this information forward to one other forum.
Edit: Actually I should have found that information by myself too... But noooooo...  I had to be a lazy bastard.
I might be actually buying this motherboard myself along with Semptron processor. Although originally I was just suggesting this for someone who had old AGP (Radeon 7500) card and wanted to update CPU+MB+Mem now and PCI-E Graphics card later. Anyone know is this a recent overclocking board?

  • MSI K8N 2 NEO Platinum with AMD 4200+ X2 Machine Check Exception

    Greetings,
I recently bought a 4200+ x2 and when i replaced my Venice 3500+ by it i get a Machine Check Exception when windows xp Professionnel is about to load. But when i go back to my Venice everything working properly. any ideas what could cause such a trouble?
my PSU is a ANTEC 550W, i don't think i'm in need of any more power and more i got it recently, so it's almost new and never got problem with it before.
    thanks.

I think that you have to cleanly reinstall your Windows XP Pro operating system for it to recognize consistently dual core cpu.  What bios do you use?  Does CPU-Z say that you have one processor or two in Processor Selection at bottom of CPU Tab?  Good luck.

  • K8N Neo3 don't work with MSI RX850XT PE?

I want to buy a MSI K8N Neo3-F to use with my VGA AGP RX850XT PE but in the PDF linked on the specifications page ( http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainboard/agr/7135agr.pdf ) my VGA isn't listed.
    Works or not?
    Tnx a lot

You're going to want to find a proper agp board to drop that vid card into.
The AGR slot isn't a full fledged agp slot so even if it did work with it, I doubt it would perform up to it's fullest.
I'm a fan of msi boards, but if you're looking for something that would allow you to upgrade to pcie in the future, I believe that asrock is the only mobo producer making a board that has both PCIe & AGP slots.
