MSI NX6800-TD128 Vs MSI K7N420Pro

I got myself a new graphics card today.
Unfortunately everything has not gone that well. Once I installed the new graphics card I noticed a distorted image on the BIOS boot up screens:
Some of the characters would blink.
Strange flickering lines (always on the same areas)
Once I booted up Windows I had similar problems with flickering lines and flickering lines of blocks.
I tried installing the drivers but I the computer would black screen and stay there.
Does anyone have any ideas? Incompatibility with the motherboard? Faulty graphics card? Power supply?
Thank you.

Hi guys.
The NX6800-TD128 does not have a particularly big cooler so it fits in perfectly.
There is no cap immediately in contact with the card but I guess they are within ~4mm.
The power cable is inserted into the card.
The monitor cable is fully inserted and I've also tried using the DVI socket with the converter but that gives me the same problem.
I was previously using the onboard video.
I did remove the drivers and run DriverCleaner to remove all traces of the drivers. I don't think it's a driver issue as the problem also occurs on the screens prier to Windows loading. I did read somewhere that the drivers can tell you if your card is not getting enough power so I tried to install the latest WHQL drivers from nVidia's site but unfortunately Windows would black screen and stay there.
I did not add (or remove) anything, including RAM, when I first inserted the card.
I've since removed every PCI card and every drive to limit the power use/conflicts but that has not helped.
Now for the bad news (for me) (I'm worried you guys are going to say that this is the problem and that I'm going to have to go out and spend £50 on a high end PSU):
I've tried two PSUs (they produce slightly different distortions but they both produce them).

Best regards guys.

  • MSI NX6800 TD128 and Garbage Characters

Purchased an NX6800 TD128 on Saturday. Put it in the machine last night and all I get is garbage characters flashing on the screen
The Windows XP logo appears after a few seconds, this time with flashing green lines down the screen. The machine then either hangs with white flashing characters onscreen, or it reboots. If it reboots, same happens again. The spec is ...
    Athlon XP2600
    1Gb RAM
    1 x DVD writer
    1 x DVD ROM
    2 x 160Gb Western Digital HDD
    480w Tangen power supply
I put the old GeForce FX 5200 back in and it all works fine. Any ideas folks? Looks like it's a dead one to me

    Hi retro-squirrel
One thing you should know before you post a problem is to give a more precise signature . If you don't give the max amps of your PSU (3.3v/5v/12v), make and type of ram (preferably with lat & cas), most of the moderators won't bother answering. I would imagine they are sick of telling people to make more informative signatures . Here is a link to give you a hand...
Suggestions on posting and getting better answers
This is from GlennVidia who is one of the mods from this area, if you fix up your sig he may be able to steer you in the right direction. He is very knowledgable and extremely helpful . I'll pop back later to see how you are going. Hopefully you don't have to RMA that card of yours.

  • NX6800-TD128 DVI-D problem

    Hi !
I am a happy owner of ay MSI NX6800-TD128, which I have a problem with. When I connect it through the normal D-SUB cable (normal vga cable, everything is fine).
BUT when I am trying to connect it with the DVI-D cable, which is the purpose why I had bought it along with the 23 col BENQ LCD, there is no signal.
I had tried to manually change the Input source as well, but no luck.
The solution should be siple, could somebosy help me out please ?
HOW CAN I TURN ON THE THE DVI SIGNAL ?
    Many thanks,
    Moore

Test 1: Get another LCD monitor with DVI connection and test it on this graphic card.
Test 2: Also, test the card on another monitor with DVI connection that known to work.
If test 1 fails, return the graphic card.
If test 2 fails, return the LCD.

  • NX6800 TD128 problem

    I bought a NX6800 TD128 about 3 weeks ago.
As soon as i had installed it I put doom 3 staight onto my machine, so that I could test how fast it was.  But It wasnt great at all first thing what happened, As soon as i had started the game, was that the whole screen divided Up into small black triangles and flickered like mad . this only happenes If I am moving thou. If I don't move my charecter in doom 3 everything is great but If I start to move the whole monitor flickers. This doesn't only happen with Doom 3 but with XIII or Prince of Persia the Sands of Time. But with the latter two games It isn't so bad with PoP It hardly ever happenes (the flimmering) and with XIII It only happenes In outdoor leveles. But doom 3 Is horrible. I have already installed all the newest drivers for the VGA card (forceware61.77) and I've also got the newest ones for my motherboard (asus A7N8X) And I#ve got SP2. I'm not quite sure if my powersupply is good enough thou. It says It has 500watts butt in real life it only has 5v 30A 3,3 28 A an 15v A with 12v But that should do. I can't think thats the problem because I've already tested the Pc with all the extra bits like Cd drives and PCI cards unplugged and the flickering didn't change. what can I do ? Is my VGA card faulty or something ?
    please help me
    with regards x7aa1186

I'd also suspect it's going to be at the top of the list for causing you much aggro
For a 500W PSU, it is very low in the 12v. Better spending a bit more of the folding stuff and investing in a better one.

  • Anyone else get a NX6800 TD128 with GDDR3?

I did.  When I got it back from Rma, I didnt notice the box, i paid more attention to puttin it back in my system so I could be playin again. Last night I noticed it said "128mb DDR3" on the box. So today, I found a program to determine specifications and sure enough, I've got GDDR3 memory.  I guess that explains why I can get it up to 350/950. Just curious, did anyone else get GDDR3 on there 6800nu?

that´s the gift from MSI,everyone who have problem with this card, just send it to RMA headquarters and they give you DDR3.but also you can´t say everyone you get it.it´s secret.they wanna you as a potencial customer again and that is the reason.but as i now you must pay a shipment to them, but it´s still less money than the 6800 GT or ULTRA costs, and with DDR3 you can have it from this card.......very good.....i wanna problemous 6800non-u

  • How long for NX6800 TD128 rma (weird characters problem)

Anyone rma this card to MSI? I sent it in tuesday of last week and it's still not on it's way. On the tracking, it is said to be "In Processing"

i did call and they said they would have to call back, so I asked for an e-mail cus my parents would probably assume they were a telemarketer, because the person i was talking to did not have the information on his computer as to why it was taking so long.  so i should be gettin that tonite or tomorrow morning.  I'll update later for anyone who's interested in how long it may take for them

  • Is it safe to turn down the fanspeed on my nx6800?

    Hi,
I just bought a new case that's really silent, and now the sound of the VGA cooler on my MSI NX6800-TD128 (non-ultra, just plain geforce 6800) really stands out. I would like to turn it down (it's on max now, as per default) but how low can I turn it and still be able to, say, play doom 3 without my card getting too hot? I haven't overclocked it, and I have the copper cooler. The ambient temperature in my case is about 28C if the motherboard is to be trusted. Does the card have a thermal sensor somewhere, and if it does, how high can I allow the temperature to go?
I read somewhere that it would even be safe to turn down the fan to minimum (http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/gffx/nv40-5.html), but I figured I'd ask here first.
    Thanks!

28C is a comperetivly low case temperture.
You sould be able to reduce it a bit, say 30%. If it does run too hot you will notice so called artifacts.
Just raise the fan speed after that happens.
If u want to make it really silent, get one of these:

  • NVidia GeForce - NX 6800 TD128

I just got a brand new MSI gforce 6800 and I can't get it working.
It shows garbage during bios init., differently colored numbers and
it doesn't seem to ever get past the init, or maybe I just can't see it.
I flashed the mobo's bios to the latest version ( asus a7v 600 ), but
that didn't make any difference. does anyone have the same combo
    of board ( or chipset via 600 ) and 6800 series ? I got NX6800 TD128.
    thanx for your replies.

    Hi,
I've found the solution to the problem where the NX6800 non ultra was showing artifacts in bootup and in windows, and also locking up and flickering the display.
I read a lot of posts in this and other forums and its not really my own merit, but since I am in the dominican republic and rma'ing the card is not viable for me, I just deceided to go on and try.
**** Will void the warranty in your card ****
    - Remove the heatsink of the card. For that you must unscrew from the back of the card. There are 4 screws that are different from the rest, the ones in the center. So don't mix them with the other ones.
    - With a business card, credit card, plain screwdriver, remove the heat transfer patches from the heatsink. They should be a pink glue like stuff.
    - With the business card (don't use a screwdriver), remove the thermal paste off the cpu.
    - Once it's clean, you have to put some (preferrably good brand) thermal paste on top of the memory chips and the CPU chip. Not too much, not too little. Then spred it uniformly so it covers every memory chip and the cpu.
    - Don't worry if you spill it on top of other parts of the card since thermal paste doesn't conduct electricity.
    - Put the heatsink again and screw it. This time apply a bit more of force to the screews so It's well tightened.
    - Then try the card.
    It worked flawlessly for me.
I tested in a total of 4 machines before doing this, all had the same problem. After doing the modification, i tried it in one of the test machines, and in my current one, specs:
    Athlon 64 3200+
    MSI KT8 Neo
    1Gb 400mhz Kingston DDR
2x WD Raptors in SATA Raid 1
    Sound Blaster Live!
    Thermaltake 520Watt PSU
Temps are now about 50-60 celsius at gameplay (doom3)
I can't post the temps before that, since I couldn't get any game to run, either windows. Only safe mode and VGA mode.
    Hope this helps.

  • K7N420Pro Major Ram Problem

Hey guys, i have no one else to turn to so please help me out.
I have two MSI K7N420Pro (one in each of my systems) and none will not run more then 1 ram chip and only one ram chip in the 1st slot, otherwise they just beep and will not boot, (Error Leds; 1 = green, 2,3,4 = red)
    here is what i have tired;
    - reseting CMOS
    - multiple bioses (2.5, 2.6 and current 2.7)
    - both ramchips are the same (256 mb Winbond PC266 CL2.5)
i cant return the boards as i bought them in the USA and now i live in Australia + i dont think that there stuffed as they both work fine with one ram chip, besides what are the chances of 2 screwed boards.
any help would be greatly appreciated
    thank you

That signal is usually a sign of memory problems alright. What we have found is that this board is very sensitive to memory and its placement. One stick will have to go in the first back (no problem according to you). The other one you'll have to place very carefully but very firmly into its slot. You should press it in til the holders on the sides pop up on their own to assure full placement. And if it doesnt work in the second block, put it in the third. Either one should work.

  • Massive static on my K7N420Pro

Ok, I have an MSI K7N420Pro, connected to a Yamaha TSS-1 5.1 surround system via the SPDIF port.  When my computer is on, I get Massive amounts of static through my speakers.  No sounds are playing.  Muting Windows 2000 seems to get rid of the static, but it comes right back when I unmute.  I am using NVIDIA Unified NForce drivers
    Audio driver version 5.10.2096.0
    Control panel Version 1.00.00.0307
Any ideas on what might cause it, or how to fix it?

Just an update - the static is intermittent.  It seems to go through a cycle of sorts...  It's clear during the day, but at night it gets worse.  I'm now thinking it's probably some kind of RF interference.   So far I've ruled out my TV, Microwave, fluorecent and incandescent lights, monitor, and almost any electrical device in my house.  Having jacked the volume up on the Yamaha reciever, with the power off, I find the static is still there, but very faint.  When I turn my computer on, it seems to amplify the static, which makes me think that if RF interference is causing it, then both the reciever and the motherboard are affected.  That being the case, it's amplifying RF interference off the  motherboard, and it is having an additive effect on itself.
If this is an RF interference problem,  how would I go about proving it, or go about fixing it?

  • Something wierd with my hypertransport

Hello, im a light overclocker and dont know all that much about it, i sorta understand about each thing that happens when you overclock and AMD64 but this hypertransport just baffles me . . . just when i thought i got it figured it just gets weirder
Ok i have a K8N Neo2 mobo with a amd64 3200+ seated and happily running at 2.2ghz at about 113f (45c) under full load and 103 under idle. Temps provided by speedfan. The cpu cooler is the Scyth Universal Heatlane cpu cooler paired with Nanotherm PCM. Komusa 3700 dual channel ddr ram (512)
Ok my thing is when i try to manually overclock my cpu to 220 with my ht at 5x i cant seem to get the pc to reboot without having to drop the ht to 4x or without lowering the fsb to 205. . . now thats manual. . .Right now im running the fsb 220 and have the ht at 5x . . .the way i was able to acheive this was using the auto overclocker under core center. BTW im running 100% stable, i have been able to run multiple apps paintshop pro9 editing a picture at pixel ranges of @ 15000x11000 with a bunch of apps running in the background, windows media with a dvd playing, trillian pro2 running idle aswell. SiSandra's burn-in ran fer like 4 hours with no problem.  I have been able to run super pi no problem too, i dont know if that would be enough proof of stabilty fer you heavy overclockers out there, i have been running more than 8 hours each day fer 3 days at this new setting. I cant test nE games my msi nx6800-td128 is on its way fer a second RMA. so i cant acutally test under a heavy game. Im running a heavily stressed ati rgace xl pci card, which has been showing graphical glitches and oddities since i put it in when my first msi vid card went funky. I hate this card, i got help from ati tech and they told me it was being stressed in my machine . . but meh
    1. why was i not able to achive these clockrates while trying to manually set the settings to what i have achived with the msi core center auto-overclocker?
    2. has anyone else been able to achieve this with a similar setup?
    3. and do pci graphic cards actually get mejorly stressed on 64bit machines?
thanks fer any kind of reply, i just thought my HT results were wierd. . and not seeing anybody post anything similar to this . . i thought i should share. So am i lucky or is this something that someone could explain to me @.@

thats what my understanding was aswell, maybe there is something im missing . . . I just didnt get why i can do that software and not by the bios, i did ferget to mention that everytime i start the pc i have to reset the overclocked setting but it works  fine after i do so. . i am just looking fer an answer to why i can do this via corecenter and not hardware. I didnt know about having to drop it 3x when clocking to 250 LOL but i have been able to overclock my cpu while at 4x to about 236, then my ram craps out on me, but im happy at 220.
Sorry the signature in my last post was not updated, its fixed with my current config now. but anywho i did notice a lag once and a while while running my machine like that fer a long while under load . . .but i guess that would be normal. hopefully somebody will be able to help enlighten both of us on this, its certianly got me puzzled still lol

  • Which brand should i buy Geforce 6800 GT?

    Hi all....
yesterday I went to the market to buy Leadtek A400 GT because i like the card cooler, but all stores and the whole seller said to me the same sentence "out of stock".
now i have to choose other 3 brands:
    1)MSI
    2)XFX
    3)PNY
I like MSI product more than the other two, but I read in many posts in the forum that the MSI release two versions, one with NVIDIA reference cooler and the new version is MSI cooler. I really want to know how can I distinguish between the two versions. Any photos can help a lot or any description.
    thanx for help.

    alaaaweee,
The only 6800s I know about are the:
    NX6800-TD128
    NX6800GT-TD256
    NX6800 Ultra-T2D256
