Multi-processor slow down

I am running an LV7 app that basically captures and processes data from 2 cameras simultaneously. It runs on a dual CPU machine with each grab and processing cycle in independant while loops. I've noticed that sometimes, for no apparent reason, one of the while loops will execute a lot slower than the other. In these instances LV (in general) uses less CPU time. I can think of nothing in the app that will cause this as quite literally it can run fine one execution and exhibit this problem the next with no change being made. I suspect there is a buffer building up or something like that as generally a PC reboot will fix this but everything is being managed correctly (or at least I think it is).
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm worried I may
be falling foul of some LV/Windows weirdness that I can do nothing about.
TIA

Are you triggering the cameras, or simply acquiring from a fixed sampling rate.
The difference could be that both cameras are not running at 100% the same frequency. If one delivers pictures at 1Hz, and the other one at 1.05Hz, then after several captures, you'll notice a difference.
If you're triggering the cameras, then this shouldn't be the problem as your program is synchronising the two cameras.
I've had this "problem" with multiple parallel serial instruments. I ended switching to a queue-based producer-consumer model, and everything worked great.
Hope this helps.
Shane.

  • Processor slow down?

I have a new Imac 3.06 with the 8800 video card. I play call of Duty 2 on it and it seems that it is very jittery, unlike on my last computer g5 twin 2 gig witha 128 vid card, Now I would have thought that this comp would be even better than the g5 but it plays worse, what can i do to improve performance in here? I have turned down picture quality, which I shouldnt have had to, ive put back colors to thousands from millions, I shouldnt have had to, it still is jittery, help please.

    Hello Legend.
You've ended up in the forum area for late-model G4 mini-towers, like the one under my name.

  • Does installing Desktop Experience on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 slow down the server / increase processor usage?

    Hello.
I'm running a tekkit classic (Minecraft) Server on a dedicated server I got from OVH, Im just wondering - Im currently using ClamAV for an antivirus, But I would like windows defender.
Im wondering if installing Desktop Experience on my dedi would increase processor usage or slow down the dedi even slightly.
    System Specs:
    RAM: 32GB DDR3 ECC 1600MHz
    CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245v2
HDD: 2x2TB SATA (Both used, specified as different drives)
    OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
Theres only 1 indev tekkit server currently running on there, Im getting 0-5% processor usage. I may be setting up more modpack servers  - but im wondering if installing desktop experience would increase the processor usage or slow the dedi down.
    Thanks.

  • Limiting # of processors slows computer down considerably

I just purchased a new Mac Pro quad-core 2.8GHz. I'm loving it so far, but I'm having a problem with one application. It apparently has trouble with the new quad-core Macs. (The new version of the program has apparently fixed this problem, but I can't afford to upgrade at the moment). A solution I've seen offered to stop the program from crashing is to use the Processor Preference Pane to limit the number of processors down to 1 or 2.
I installed the Processor Preference Pane from the Developers Tools, but limiting it to 1 or 2 causes the computer to slow down to unacceptable speeds -- literally, there's a lag of 10-15 seconds on any action, even clicking on an icon.
Is there anything I can do to correct this?

There is a workaround, until you can afford to upgrade your BitVice.
As soon as you have started an encoding session with your old BitVice 1.7, you can re-activate all your processors again.

  • High processor load slows down wireless connection

My wireless connection slows to a crawl when the CPU is being utilized more than 80% (average for both CPU cores).
For example, if I have Safari and Quicktime open, web pages load very fast and the CPU load is less than 5%. When encoding a video in Quicktime, the processor load is around 85%, but web pages load very slowly in Safari (or any other browser). Ping times also increase considerably (from 25ms under low CPU load to 200-2000ms under heavy CPU load). As soon as the video is done encoding and the CPU load drops back down, web pages load fast again.
This problems only seems to apply to AirPort connections. High CPU load does not appear to affect speeds when connected via Ethernet.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    MacBook Pro 15" 2.33GHz/2GB/160GB/256MB   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Has no one else experienced this? I can reproduce this problem consistently. Anything that utilizes the processor at least 40% slows down my wireless internet connection.

  • Does Maverick slow down processor speed on iMac 2007?

Ever since the update on Maverick 9.1 I been experiencing very slow reponse in all of my applications, especially Safari. I tried memory clean, disk doctor, and hard drive test which show nothing really. Activity monitor shows I got about 1 GB of ram that is available when running Safari. I tried other browers with the same rainbow circle that safari has. Is it a virus? Or is my computer so old that apple is trying to force me to upgrade? (BTW, I've got 3 GB of ram and 54 GB of hard drive space avalible- and I ordered more ram to make a total of 4 GB of ram).

RAM could be one of the issues with your slower Mac performance.
You are starting to get a little low on hard drive space. 54 GBs is still alright, just need to keep an eye on this when your drives gets to 20 GBs or lower.
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.
If you have any commercially advertised antivirus software installed, completely uninstall this per the instructions on the developer's website.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of so called hard drive "cleaning" or " tune up" style apps? These are a form of malware/"crapware".
Delete anything like this per the instructions on the developer's website.

  • Photoshop CC slows down suddenly, for several minutes

    Hi!
I have a problem with Photoshop CC. I sit on a 27" iMac, 8GB RAM and an i5 processor, OS X Mavericks, Wacom intuos Pro tablet.
My problem, that suddenly occurs is tha Photoshop CC suddenly slows down to a halt. No error messages, it just gets very very slow. The first sign is that I suddenly cant zoom. I try to zoom, and nothing happens. Then the cursor, still able to move around with no problem, wont change to an arrow when hovering over buttons or menu items. If I open Safari, everything works fine, exept if I go back to Photoshop, then only the properties window will show. Photoshop is like this for up to ten minutes, then suddenly everything happens at once. All the zooming, closing of images if I tried that (with the keyboard), and then it is all fine again.
The problem occurs both when I do complex work with many layers, but also when doing simpler work with just a few layers.
I have 850GB free storage space and Photoshop is allowed to use 5GB of RAM. I usually dont have open more than two pictures at once. I use Lightroom 5, and PS CC as an external editor.
Any ideas how to solve this? It does sound like PS is writing alot to the HD sometimes, but it should not get this slow anyway, and the program does not freeze as in software error. I dont need to force quit PS, I just need to wait it out. Very annoying!
Sorry for my bad English! It is not my first language

Tells us a bit more about the work you are doing:
    How many layers?
What types of layers? Shape? Text? etc.
    Document dimensions?
    Bit depth?
    File size on disk?
Also, tell us a little about how things are set up:
    Where is your scratch disk?
How much free space on that disk?
    How much RAM?

  • How to test hardware on an old MacBook Pro that is slowing down.

I have the very first-gen MacBook Pro 2.0gHz Core Duo, 2gb ram.  I have been using this laptop as my primary since I got it, mostly for development work (Java, Objective-C, Web, etc), but also email, general web surfing, and the occational game (although, not in a while).
Recently, I noticed things were starting to "slow down".  Well, not slow down so much as things would get long pauses.  For instance, I hit a site in Google Chrome, and the app sits there for like 20-30sec of longer, as if the window is frozen, then *poof*, it draws the page.  Sometime, Chrome will even pop up asking if I want to kill the page.  It is not the only application that seems to be suffering from this, I just spend a LOT of time on the web, so I tend to notice it much more.
Even more recently, my SpringSource Tool Suite (STS, a custom Eclipse with a bunch of SpringSource plugins) started acting up too.  Mostly when I start the Roo Shell and execute a command, STS (read Eclipse) will show the command as "executing", but it seemed to never run.  I thought it was maybe a problem with STS or the Roo Shell plugin, but yesterday I ran something as a test, then got a phone call and didn't come back for some time.  To my surprise after more than 40min of just sitting there the command ran.  Once it ran, it ran in full, normal speed (the command I ran was to rebuild the Eclipse project files using Maven).  So, what I thought was frozen was merely paused for a long period of time, just like what I was seeing in Chrome.
So, this has lead me to believe I either have some sort of hardware issue, some sort of heat issue (I have seen this on Wintel laptops where the processor "speed steps" down to almost 33mHz), or some sort of software issue.  I really don't want to have to re-install OS X, if I can avoid it.  I did boot off the original disks that came with my laptop and ran the Hardware Test, but it came back with no errors.  I have iStat Pro installed as well, and the fan speeds are usually around 1800-2000rpm, sometimes jumping to 4000+rpm.  CPU tempuratures report around 151º.  I also ran the Disk Utility off my 10.6 disks.  I do know that my DVD burner no longer burns disks, but it hasn't for more than a year.
    Laptop specs:
      - MacBook Pro, Model MacBookPro1,1
      - OS X 10.6.8
      - 2.0gHz Core Duo w/ 2gb DDR2 RAM
      - Toshiba MK3252GSX 320gb HDD (replacement for factory 120gb HDD over 1.5yrs ago due to space issues)
      - I recently replaced the battery, as the old one had expanded.  I use the laptop on wall power 99% of the time.
    Thanks,
    Mike Bauer

As mentioned above, I did do this.  What I am not so certain is how intensive this test is.  Stated another way: If this was ran and passed 100%, does this mean everything on my laptop is 100% functional, like the fans, processor, cooling, memory, etc?  The drive also checked out when I did the Disk Utility from the 10.6 install CDs, and the S.M.A.R.T. check indicates no disk errors.
Maybe I should take it into a Genius and have them look at it.  Just not sure how much that will cost me, and its an old laptop, so I don't want to put too much into it.

  • Itunes slows down when sharing music is enabled

    hi,
i searched through the forums and i didn't see that exact issue so i decided to post it.
as soon as i share my library itunes completely slows down.
    - starting to play songs takes 5 seconds and displays the rotating rainbow circle
    - rating songs takes 5 seconds also and displays the rotating rainbow circle
    - resuming play after pausing also
there are two more interesting issues:
    - i have a few albums where it doesn't happen! the albums aren't encoded different, have the same version of tags, are on the same drive in an adjacent folder. i tried reimporting songs, placing it into different folders or harddrives. no changes.
    - only 2% of my library is shared and it seems like most of it is recently added music. but: no differences in encoding, tags, place on the harddrive. renaming, readding, moving the files didn't change the situation.
i also disabled automatic updating of playlists, deleted all my playlist folders, reinstalled itunes, tried basically everything.
what does itunes do in the network when playing, rating songs, ...? i'm using a fast wlan, but i don't think that's the issue or does itunes reexport the xml-file after every play? has it something to do with auto-update-play-counts after every song (which i couldn' find in the preferences)?
any help would be greatly appreciated!
    regards,
    eric.
by the way: i'd loooooove to see pandora-like functionality in the next major versin of itunes!!! :)))

When you are sharing your iTunes, any other users you share with are accessing your hard drive and music foilder simultaneously with you. Since shared users are not playing exactly the same song at the same time as you, your hard drive's heads are scanning and reading from more points than they would be with you alone listening. There is a need to cache some part of the files for sharing, and that uses a bit of your RAM too. I guess it would be similar to saying that your car drives fine as long as you are driving it alone. Pile a few friends in with you, tow their cars behind yours, and suddenly, your car has nowhere near the performance it did with just you in it. Aside from adding more RAM, buying a fatser hard drive or stepping up your processor, this is simply an issue with sharing one system between more than one user at the same time, and it can't be remedied.

  • Serial instr. (VISA) VI slowing down performance

    Hi,
I tried to use the serial VISA Vi´s of LabVIEW 6 to install a communication
    between a "Master" (PC104) and some "slave"-devices via a multi-RS-232 card
(PCM-3643). After writing a command, the master is waiting for a short
respond of the slave, indicating the execution of the command.
I´ve used the property "Termination Character" to detect the end of the
respond. I hoped to minimize the system load by this way, but I realised a
100% system workload while the VI is waiting. With portmon you can see
thousends of status calls to the port instead of few receive events. This
extra-load seemed to slow down the overall performance (and increases the
    CPU temperature).
Is there a way to minimize the activities in the waiting
    period, or should I
better use the old Vi´s from the Serial Compatibility palette to build my
own loop, including some additional waiting time.
I´m not a very experienced labview programmer (nor a programmer at all).
    Thank you
    Hans-Joachim

    Hi Hans-Joachim,
I like your comment about "and increase the CPU temperature".
Make sure you get a copy of the latest and greatest version of NI-VISA.
A while back they fixed an issue where NI-VISA ate up all of the CPU. This sounds similar to what you mentioned.
The suggestion regarding checking the number of bytes at the port first is always good advice.

  • System slowed down after Mavericks update (10GB RAM)

    Hi,
I have recently updated to Maverics on my mac pro, 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 10GB RAM.
When I perform regular tasks it's all normal. Unfortunately I do some much more than that. I use Aperture on a daily basis and it seems to have slowed down a bit. The issue is more apparent when I use Final Cut. I can't have any other design/photography/video software on the background anymore. My computer can't deal with. But it could before Mavericks! It will also complain about not enough memory when rendering...
I understand that kernel task is heavy on the memory and after an EtreCheck I also realised how much memory spotilight is using. I already excluded a lot of items from spotlight, and it's way better, but still, why is my computer so slow?
Please can someone look at my check and tell me if there's anything I can do to boost my system back to it's previous glory?
    thank you

Beware of perceived RAM use. 10.9 uses RAM more efficiently:
About memory management in OSX 10.9 Mavericks
Memory is managed differently, and more efficiently in 10.9.  It is (mostly) unique in the industry, but may become trend.
Let’s start with the basics.  Mechanical disk drives are very slow, with access speeds in the 10s of milliseconds and transfer rates in the 200-400 Mbps range real world.  SSDs are much faster, on the order of a couple of ms access and typically 1200-3000 mbps transfer rates.  RAM is much faster than either, in the nanosecond access and transfer speeds of ~8 Gbps effective (1 GHz x 8 bits/byte).
These are rough numbers for comparison purposes only.
So the goal is to keep as much in RAM as possible. But if you run out of RAM what do you do?
Traditionally you take the least used RAM and write it to a special part of the disk, in a way that you can access it most efficiently - minimizing the disk delays.  This is called a swap file because you swap RAM in and out of it.
10.9 has a new trick:  it compresses RAM using the main processors.  Rather than swapping stuff to disk (disks are slow), it actually uses the processor to compress memory and make, for example, 1 GB of physical RAM hold as much as 1.5GB.  Similar approaches are used to make MP3 files 10x smaller than the real thing - there is redundancy in data and you can take advantage of that.  Apple is making the following calculation: the processors can compress way faster than the disk can swap.  And its also predicting that the processors are often partly idle - waiting for swap files or disk access.  So rather than swap files around, its compresses the files ***in RAM***.
Compression works,.  Tests show that on average it is faster, and that 4GB (i have 4 GB RAM) acts like 5 1/2 - 6GB.  Wow.
So, 10.9 will load up most of your RAM, knowing that it can compress some when it needs to.  So don’t worry too much that it may look like all your RAM is taken - yea, it is, but its OK.
The measures to look at are:
    1. amount compressed. Compression means it has run out of RAM and needs more. As long as compression is low this is fine. In fact this is how 10.9 uses RAM more efficiently than 10.6,7 or 8.  Contrary to common wisdom, it requires LESS RAM than 10.8. The colored indicator tells you who this is going - green (good), yellow( iffy) and red (bad).
    2. amount swapped.  Once it cannot compress any further, or can’t do so efficiently, jot begins old-fashioned swapping.  This is a major slow-down and means you would benefit from more RAM. Tiny amounts are OK.
here's an article by Apple - but on th pre-10.9 memory management techniques....mostly still true, but read on.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342?viewlocale=en_US
Bottom line - compression makes 10.9 use RAM more efficiently than previous OSX versions.  It also makes the “ram used” indicator less meaningful, and mans you should monitor “compression” .
That said, RAM has always been one of the most cost effective upgrades possible.  People spend too much on new machines and too little on more RAM.
    Hope this helps,
    Grant

  • What is this all about? "The "QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6" plug-in is slowing down your Mac. You can wait for it to recover or stop it now."  I'm running Mavericks 6.8.

I regularly get a prompt reading as follows: "The "QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6" plug-in is slowing down your Mac. You can wait for it to recover or stop it now."  I've tried waiting, but nothing happens.  I "stop it now" and lose the page I'm reading.

I have seen so much response about the Mountain Lion update slowing down computers.  I am updating from Mac OS x 10.6.8.  What can I do to ensure the upgrade will go fine?  Do I unplug my external hard drive before installing, or keep it plugged in?
Also, I have the 08 version of iWork. Will this cause problems for the update?  Can I update this AFTER I update the processor?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There's no reason to think that Mountain Lion will slow down your Mac. Just make a backup of your data before upgrading with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Also, check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com Upgrade them to a compatible version or delete them before upgrading.
The external drive won't make the OS X Mountain Lion installer fail, but it's better to unplug it during the upgrade.
iWork '08 is compatible with Mountain Lion. iWork '09 includes OS X Mountain Lion features and can be purchased at the Mac App Store.
To upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend at least 4 GB of RAM. You can check how much memory you have in Apple menu > About this Mac

  • New IMAC slowing down with spinning ball

I've had my MAC for about 3 weeks (I switched from a PC). Today it started slowing down. First whe n I tried to print something and then when I was in Excel (Office for MAC 2004). Both times it didn't do anything for a minute and then the clorful spinning ball thing appeared. About a minute later it finished what I was doing (saving a template file).
I looked at the system memory and I have 2GB of RAM with an OK status. I have two printers - one USB attached to my MAC and the other on another computer (Windows) that I am sharing. This was not a problem before, so I don't expect this to be the issue, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.
    I haven't bought virus software yet - perhaps I have a virus?
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Macs don't get viruses, so you can rule that out. Do you have any shared drives or network connections? Something there could be slowing things down. If you do have some connections, try disconnecting them and see if that speeds up your access. When was the last time you rebooted the machine? You could always try that.
There is a utility in applications\utilities called "Activity Monitor". You could look there to see if anything is hogging the memory or processor. Have you installed anything recently?

  • Compressor slow down after DVDSP/quicktime update

I am producing DVDs every week between 1 to 1.5 hours long. Usually takes compressor from 2 to 4 hours to render.
After upgrading to DVDSP 4.1.2 and Quicktime 7.1.5 it has been 4 hours and the redering is just over half done.
Activity monitor is showing 98.70, using about 1/2 of both processors.
Anyone else having a slow down using compressor?
Power Mac Dual 1.4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GB Ram, SATA RAID drives

I am having the same issue. My G5 Quad would rev the fans going no matter what i was encoding. QT to WMV, QT to iPod, Compressor encoding SD or HD or QT file. Compressor used to fly for me. This wasn't the case on my G5 dual 2 but I thought it was because I didn't have as much RAM. Now I upgraded to the UB version of FCP and it's as slow as molasses in wintertime.
