Multilple TNS names files used in Connection Network Alias Dropdown

My network's TNS names directory has the latest tnsnames.ora file and also has several older versions named "tnsnames.ora.<date>". In SQL Developer Connections it appears all of them are read to create the Network Alias dropdown list. You can test this by making a copy of your tnsnames.ors file called tnsnames.ora.old1, etc. My guess is that SQL Developer is reading "tnsnames.ora*", not "tnsname.ora".
But I'm just a user, not a DBA admin. Is this a feature or a bug?
Its also possible that keeping the renamed old versions in the TNS names folder instead of a subfolder is just bad form and I need to get that behavior changed internally.
I'm running 1.5.4.59.40. I just installed patch 2 and the behavior is the same.

It's a feature. I think I remember some guys asking for support for this because some setups use various tnsnames.* files, but eventually a lot more users are complaining about this. Sqldev 2.0 will probably have changes in this area, so let's hope we will finally be able to choose our location manually...

  • Multiple TNS Names files cause duplicates in TNS Alias drop down

SQL Developer 1.5 EA3, JDK 1.6.0_04, Win XP SP 2
In EA3 we are still getting duplicates in the TNS Network Alias drop down box where there are multiple files starting with TNSNAMES. in the first location SQL Developer finds TNS Names files. I know it has been discussed before (ie 1.2.0 reads TNSNAMES.ORA file multiple times and duplicates values in Alias but can anyone explain why we need to look for more than one file starting with TNSNAMES. or indicate any other product that uses similar logic to find the correct TNS Names file?

I have multiple versions of oracle clients and a tns_names file in each directory.
I agree with the last comment about a preference option of which tnsnames file to use.
Right now my problem is not seeing duplicates, but not seeing all of the SID's listed in my tnsnames file, and because of the above I can't tell which tns_names file it is using. So instead I am editing them all.

  • SQL Developer 2.1.0.63 duplicate TNS names displayed in the Connection Type

I'm running SQL Developer 2.1.0.63. The New Connection window displays duplicate Alias names when you select the Connection Type of TNS. I've made sure that the TNS_ADMIN variable name is all in upper case in the Environment Settings but I haven't had any luck eliminating the duplicates. I've tried filling in the TNSNames directory on the preferences setting but this didn't help either. I've also checked my system and I don't have multiple version of TNSNAMES (we keep a public copy on a network share). Does anybody have any suggestions?
We also have SQL Developer 1.5.5 and we don't have this duplicate problem in that version.

I found the problem, it was in the TNSNames file. SQL Developer 2.1 is more sensitive to a messy TNSNames file. This past fall we reworked our environment with new hardware and OS software, during the multiple rounds of testing we created various temporary test databases. The entries that were added to the TNSNames file never got cleaned up and in some cases were added in a random fashion. After I went in and cleaned up some of the old, dead entries I noticed that there were duplicate entries for one of our Development databases. After I removed the duplicate entry in the TNSNAMES file all of the duplicates displayed on the Connection Type screen disappeared. Problem solved.

  • Toad ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified

I'm installing oracle clients and tools on a new Windows 7 machine issued to me by my company.
I installed a 64 bit 10.2.0.3 oracle client, but found that 64 bit installations don't work with TOAD. So I installed a 32 bit 10.2.0.1 oracle client. I also set up my TNS names files in the network/admin directory of both installations, set up the hosts files, and ensured that the registry information is accurate. I have no ORACLE_HOME environment variable because when I installed the 2nd installation of Oracle it said that I shouldn't have one since I have multiple versions of oracle and it erased it.
I am able to connect and use SQL Plus and SQL Developer with both installations of Oracle, but I'm not able to connect with TOAD. TOAD finds the 32 bit installation and all of its registry information looks correct and TOAD says "The Oracle home is valid". TOAD also loads my TNS file and all associated IPs and everything looks good when I look at them in the the TNS Editor. I am also running TOAD as administrator in order to avoid "Can't initialize OCI. Error -1" errors.
Yet, whenever I try to connect to any database, I get the following error:
"ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" and then the database I am using
Is there anything else I need to setup because I have multiple installations of Oracle? Or anything else I need to setup running on a 64 bit windows machine with 32 bit installations of oracle and toad?
Thanks for any help you can give.

  • Local Database, TNS Names & ORA-12541: No Listener

I am trying to get IFS working on our new Windows 7 machine and the entire department is scratching it's head right now.
I have gotten Oracle 11.2.0.1 installed and finally being seen by the ODBC thanks to the past threads on the forum mentioning the System Environment Variable. However, now I need to be able to get the program to sync the information that I can pull from "MPRDSP6", the one working ODBC connection right now.
In the past with Oracle XE we had the following in our TNS Names file:
    XE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = COMPUTER.company.local)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = XE)
The XE was created whenever Oracle XE was installed and we just added in our MPRDSP6 at the end of the TNS Names file. This was what we used when making the local copy for our personell that would travel and need access to the database.
However, with Oracle 11.2.0.1, there was no TNS Names file whenever it installs and I had to create it --> Inputting our XE entry and the other, MPRDSP6.
Upon trying to 'Test Connection' in the ODBC screen I get:
    Unable to Connect
    SQLState=S1000
    [Oracle][ODBC][Ora] ORA-12541: TNS:no listener
Whenever I try to sync the MPRDSP6 with the local copy of it (named local_db), I am getting an error from the program saying:
Could not find the Local Oracle Data Folder. Please make sure your Local Oracle is running and that you have set the Local Database Creator.
I am assuming this is simply because there is actually no database in existance: it is just in the TNS Names.
    I am Running Windows 7 x64
Forgive me if this is a very simple fix as I am completely new to the world of Oracle.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Having the same issue, trying to connect IFS Sales and Marketing. In my case, I am using Oracle Express 10g, Windows 7 32-bit. My ODBC DSN can find the "host" server, but does not seem to find the local Oracle Express instance.

  • AX use to extend network from a LAN

Hi there - not sure if the subject title is correct. I have hust bought a house that has Cat 5 Cabling and i initialy thought of putting an AX in each room plugged into the Ethernet socket on the wall (that goes back to a Switch with a modem connected to it).
Question is can i setup each AX / AEABS / time capsule in the house to be on the same network for disk sharing/printing etc. using this method or do they all need to be on the same wireless network with a central hub?
Basically i am looking at creating a compbined wired / wireless network and wondering if it all works the same as if it was an extended wireless networ?
    Regards
    Taffy

Question is can i setup each AX / AEABS / time capsule in the house to be on the same network for disk sharing/printing etc. using this method or do they all need to be on the same wireless network with a central hub?
Yes, you can place base stations at various locations in the house, where there are Ethernet drops, to create a "whole-house" wireless network.
You will; however, need to place an Internet router at the location of the modem instead of using the switch directly, so your network configuration would look something like the following: Modem > \[WAN port] AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) \[LAN port] > Ethernet switch > base station #n, where ">" = an Ethernet patch cable.
What you will want to do is configure the AirPorts for what is known aa a roaming network. With this type of network, each base station would have a unique base station name, but use the same Network Name (aka SSID) & wireless encryption for all.

    Hi Bjoern
    Thanks again for your input.
I have some commnet on your input.
I have started instance in mount mode using sqlplus. But it doesn't make diffrence if I stated using srvctl since service get ready as we started instance either OPEN/MOUNT mode using srvctl or sqlplus.
As you are saying diffrent way of configuration of service by mentioning preferred and available attributes for instances but its not useful to know instances which are open. Its useful for segregate work to specific nodes by creating diffrent services for diffrent application.
'crs_stat -t' shows resources online even instance is either nomount/mount/open state. I want to exact state of instance so its not useful for me.
Below example showing service get READY status even I start instanc with mount option using SRVCTL

In the ReportDocument.Load method it tries to connect using the using the connection information embedded in the Report File. When the application calls ReportDocument.Load(reportFileName). This
tries to connect to the database using the connection information embedded in
the "reportFileName". This was only realised on checking the ODBC Trace
Log. The connection itself is not a problem. The problem is that the embedded
connection information is related to OLD production system. And failed
    connections had raised some concerns.
    Note: I am using
SetDataSource to populate the data for the report. So I don't need the
    connection.
    Is there any way I
    can disable this auto-connect?
    Thanks and
    regards,

I need a help in answering one of the issue encountered last week.
I have created a database link and tried to access the information from a table using the program written in another language. The password provided was incorrect for that user while creating database link. So we expected that, while retrieving the data, Database connection has to be errored out as password provided is incorrrect.
But unfortunately, user account was locked out. When i checked with DBAs they mentioned that it tries to connect 16 ports with in a min of time.we were shocked as it STOPS another scheduled jobs with that user. and affects production badly.
As per the program, it has to connect only one time and yesterday we tried to execute the program in DBAs observation and it errored out as expected. Didn't tried for multiple ports.
Now the question is, WHY the database connection established 16 times last week and caused user account locked. DBAs are unable to answer it. Any EXPERTs opinion on this would greatly appreciated.
I have verified managing ports in oracle documentation, it was mentioned that if one port is busy it will try to connect to another port in the range of ports mentioned during the installtion. DBAs verified ports related file and it was blank. and they are not agreeing with this reason. Please HELP me in finding the correct REASON for this.
is it a NETWORK issue or issue with DATABASE SERVER only?
    Thanks

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.

    Hi,
I am a tech at a failing company. Unfortuneatly some users still need ADI installed and working with very limited resources to troubleshoot oracle. I am getting the error - ( Could not connect to the database - ora-12545: tns:name lookup failure )when the user tries to log on to ADI. Any suggestions? I would really appreciate it. We are on Windows NT on an NT network. Oracle 8.05 client installed and ADI 6.0.
    Thanks, Mary

Copy the tnsname.ora file from Oracle Database serve onto the client PC.
    Path: %Oracle_home%\net80\admin\

  • InDesign Crashing on file open - Missing Font / Network Connection Lost

For starters I am using InDesign 5.5  When I open the file, either by clicking on the file through finder or or opening it through indesign I get the following error message:
The document "file name.indd" uses one or more fonts which are not currently available on your system.
I can't press either Find Font or OK - wheel spins then after 30 seconds or so and then I get the message:
The network connection was lost for the file "file name.indd", or the file was modified by another process.
Press OK. Nothing happens. Activity monitor says Indesign is using 100% of the cpu and not responding. The file is on my local machine and nothing has changed on it since the last time I opened it without issues 3 days ago. I'm not running anything that could be using the file or any of the images the file uses.  I have downloaded and installed the font that was missing and the error message hasn't changed.  Any ideas?

Try the option: save a copy for duplicate a file
    Hope,it works

  • Can't Connect to Database - TNS Names Trouble

Hi all, this is my first posting, so bear with me as I struggle
through trying to word it in a logical manner that you can
understand! I'm definitely not an Oracle guru, but some of my
job duties require me to interact with several databases -- so I
know enough to get by. After the battle with the Nimda virus, my
system could not find the files to start SQL Plus and the icon
had turned to generic. In an attempt to try and resolve this, I
downloaded and installed the 8.17 client. I set up several
connections through Net 8 config asst, but some of them would
not work. Here's additional background info: we are moving to a
new clustered DB configuration. The old config was numerous
individual databases, but the new DB incorporates all the old
ones (just separate accounts). The funny thing is I have no
problem setting up connections to the old databases, but have
had zero luck connecting to any account on the new DB. I have
coworkers that are using an older version of SQL PLus and SQL
Net Easy Config and they don't have any problems connecting to
the new DB. We double checked there TNS names against mine and
found no differences. Also, I still have the old version of
Oracle loaded, because it wouldn't let me uninstall it -- I
loaded the 8.17 in a new home. I'm desparate, so any help at
all will be very appreciated. Sorry for such a long post.
    Thanks,
    SS

    Steve,
This sounds like a job for Oracle Support. There are so many
factors here, and if the tnsnames.ora files are the same, it
will need some industrial strength investigation.
