Multiple hard disks different os's...

Hey you guys,
I got a little issue. I'm sure it requires a somewhat simple solution but I tried to google and do more research on my issue and I have found nothing. It's probably because I'm not using the right keywords . Anyways, I installed arch on my main hd, it is a sata drive, and I have installed freeBSD on another hd, an ide drive. When I try to boot arch with both hd's plugged in I get a kernel panic error after init tries to run. This happens even if my bios is set to have the arch hd as the main priority for booting. When I manually unplug the freebsd hd from the motherboard, I can boot arch successfully. Now when I have both plugged in again and I have the hd with freeBSD as a priority for booting, it boots successfully. I was wondering if there is a way to just switch from one hd to another on my bios without having to manually disconnect one hd in order for arch to boot properly. I'm guessing there's a certain configuration on arch's side that I can modify to ignore the other hd when booting. If the full panic error is needed, let me know and I'll reply with the info. Thanks in advance.

your gonna need to reconfigure your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf check out
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Con … mkinitcpio
in the hooks section only put in the hook for your arch drive
I installed arch on my main hd, it is a sata drive
so only have sata in hooks
then either
pacman -S kernel**   <**whichever kernel you run
or
mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel**.img   <**kernel you run
my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
MODULES=" sata_via ext3"
HOOKS="base udev sata "
the hooks define which drive gets sda or sdb
as arch  recognizes ide as sda now
unless you tell it otherwise

  • Multiple hard disks / Mulitple Images for MBP

I just "switched" and am an owner of MBP with 110 Gigs of available space.
One of the first things I noticed is that the footprint of OS X is quite large after installing a bunch of new apps, putting my music and photo collection on the hard disk I started to worry about space.
I have multiple external hard drives for back ups and storage but I want regular and immediate access to photos, files, and music so I've ruled out storing things on external drives because they are not always on.
I have created a bootable backup on one of these drives however, and I started wondering...
Can I create multiple bootable back up partitions and then customize them for particular tasks and just boot from those external partitions whenever I need to engage in a particular task?
For example I would create fresh OSX image on an external partiton and install Adobe Create Suite (which takes up some space). Then when I needed to use Photoshop or Illustrator I can plug in that drive, boot from it and work as usual. I can still access the MBP drive for files and other applications.
I'm thinking of making another external partition for my windows virtual machine which also takes up lots of space.
Is there going to be a significant performance hit from running the OS over USB 2 or Firewire?
    Are there other concerns?
Am I thinking about this wrong? for example would it be easier to install apps to eternal partitions and run from there? Do the apps need to be on the same partition as all the pref files and the OS or does it matter at all.
Thanks for helping out the mac newb
Is there going to be a significant pref

    jimndeb,
Let me explain my setup. I have my OS, and all applications installed on the internal hard drive. Just as you mentioned, I also store all my music and photos on the internal drive as well, so I have access to them when I carry my machine with me.
I then have a second external hard drive, where I store movie files and other large files to preserve space on my internal drive. This drive also has a second copy of OS X installed on it. The only time I boot off of the external drive was to repair/debug a problem with the main drive, or to test a software update. I never made a habit of booting off the external drive because it was noticeably slower.
On my first Powerbook (G4, 667 mhz) I had a 30gb hard drive, and was very space conscious. I used to keep non critical applications such as Final Cut Express or Adobe Elements on this second drive, as to not eat up space on my primary drive. So, in this situation I would boot off of the internal drive, but run programs that were installed on the external drive. This way, my OS was not suffering from throughput slowdowns, but my individual applications were.
On my new Macbook Pro, I have given up storing programs on the external drive. With a 120 gb hard drive, I decided that that few hundred megabytes or even a gig or two of hard drive space was not worth moving the applications to the external drive. I concluded that it was not the programs themselves that were filling my harddrive, but rather the media files.
So, back to your situation. Yes, you could have an OS installed on your external drive, with particular apps and files stored with this OS. I'm not sure there are any benefits (or requirements for that matter) of having the OS and apps on the same partition. I believe you could run a setup similar to what I used to, where your booting OS is internal and your applications reside on the external drive.
As a note to your original message, I am not sure if you can have multiple OS X installations on different partitions of a drive. I have never tried it, but I know partition support seems to have improved with Intel machines (in order for boot camp to work).
    Hope this helps,
    Josh

  • Howto backup, multiple hard disks ?!

In few weeks I'll get my new MacBook Pro (512 GB SSD) , Now I'm using Windows Vista + 512 GB internal hard disk which contain docs, photos, video, ...
I'm thinking what I need for new backup and I wouldn't like to load many data into my macbook so I'm thinking to buy new 2.5 hdd 1 TB where I can save my data of windows hdd and I would use it as expansion data for mac.
Then Iìll buy new external hdd 3.5" of 2 TB for all backup.... too much disk!?!?!?! What do you think ?

To connect multiple USB hard drives to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), you just need to use a USB hub.

  • Firefox 17.0.1 cache activity on multiple hard disks?

I upgraded OS of my desktop PC from Win 7 to Win 8 (install from scratch).
I also loaded latest version of Firefox 17.0.1
My C system disk is a SSD (therefore no moving parts). I also have a second mechanical hard disk only for data (no software installed on it).
I noticed that; when I scroll up & down in any web page (sometimes just moving mouse over active areas) I hear exactly syncronized activity sound from my mechanical hard disk. So Firefox is inducing some read/write activity on that drive (which normaly it shouldn't have anything to do with it).
I didn't have this with my previous Win 7 - Firefox 16 combination (on exact same PC setup).
I'm only using few extensions (that I've been using on my previous setup as well).
It only happens with Firefox. Scrolling in no other software causes such activity on my secondary mechanical disk.
So I assume that; Firefox is throwing it's cache operation on every single drive it finds available around.
I couldn't find any setting (under Options) to specify location of cache file.
May be it's not the cache file; but it's absolutely caused by Firefox.
I have a virtually silent PC - currently spoiled by Firefox.
Any idea how can I have Firefox run using only the resources of my C (SSD) drive?

Firefox stores all your data — including the cache — under your profile folder, which resides on your system disk.
    * [[Profiles]]
If you want a version of Firefox that stores everything in its installation folder, get Firefox Portable. It's designed to be run off a USB Flash drive, but it can also be installed to a local disk. Just make sure to put it somewhere other than the Program Files folder, because over there, Windows UAC would prevent it from writing and modifying files.
    * http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
Or if you prefer doing things the hard way, you can relocate most of Firefox's data as described in this thread:
    * [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/944695 How to move any and all disk writes made by firefox to ANOTHER drive?]
As for finding out what Firefox is doing, you can use Process Monitor. Create a filter for Process name: ''firefox.exe'', then open the '''Tools''' menu and choose '''File Summary''' to examine disk activity.

  • Cant write/edit data on my external hard disk! Help please!~~

Okay guys, currently, i'm using Tiger version 10.4.11. My problem is that i cant edit data or write data to any external hard disks, like the maxtor One Touch and so on. Only thing i can do is to extract the data from the disks. I have tried to write on multiple hard disks but in all my attempts i have failed. i've tried to edit my network settings, but no results.
So, i seek help from anyone out here!

    Hello, yea.. thanks man =)
Basically, its a shared hard disk between my macbook and a windows PC. So i kinda use the PC to write all my backups and data on the hard disk.
I have quite a few hard disk and they all have the same issue. It says 'The item 'file x'cannot be moved because 'my hard disk' cannot be modified.'I've used the software provided from the hard disk manufacturer, Maxtor/Seagate, to reformat the brand new portable hard disk which i bought yesterday.
Its connected via USB, same as all the other ones i have.
eh. the get info for it says

    Format: Windows NT Filesystem

erm... its a portable drive which i carry around, so i guess its not a network drive? and how doi determine the network settings? Sorry man.. not really good at these =x

  • Issues with Catalogs in Organiser when photos on hard disk other than C:

    Hello Folks;
I face the following issue with PSE7 :
the Catalog function does not work when I try to import pictures located on any other hard disk different from C: disk.
In other words, the following happens :
    1) in the Organiser, I create a new Catalog (on C: disk or on F: disk)
    2) I import pictures located in a directory on disk F:
    3) when I try to review the "cataloged" images one by one  , PSE7 gives the message that he has lost the connection to the images and a window opens asking to RECONNECT the files;
    4) I then browse to the right directory , find the files and try to reconnect  back to the original image (that was not moved to another place nor renamed !) the system does not reconnect te picture with the catalog
    5) in short : PSE7 is unusable when pictures are not located on C: disk
I contacted the support (since I ahve a legal version , yes !) but they seem to consider this normal ; catalog and pictures must be on the same disk drive they told me . Unbelievable !
This surprises me because : with PSE4 (my former version) , this worked withiout any problem !
I consider this as a ral software bug, isn't it ?
I am still in touch with Adobe's support but it takes time .. and still no solution ..
Did someone face the same issue ? Suffering in group is less painfull as anyone knows .. ;-)
Any solution at sight ?  ;-)
Thanks a lot for any help on this, I am totally stuck here ... !
    Claude

    THANKS a lot dj-paige   ... !!!
Thanks to the psedbtool (thanks  john rellis too  !) .. I could diagnose the problem : my two disk drives C: and F: had the same serial number .
And even better :  I could SOLVE the problem .
I changed the volumeid of disk F:  asexplained in john rellis's documentation .. and now PSE7's Catalog works fine !!
(I am still waiting for a decent answer from Adobe's suuport .. it's a shame that they do not do !).
THANKS again dj-paige  for the support received ... !!!
I wish all problems in life could be solved as easily as this one !!!

  • HT1175 How do you back up additional hard disks to time capsule? Which disks etc. to you choose?

How do you back up additional hard disks to time capsule? Which disks etc. to you choose?

I can read your question a number of ways.
If you mean a disk plugged into your computer you wish to include in Time Machine backup.. just make sure it is HFS+ formatted and remove it from the exclusion list in the TM preferences.
If you mean a disk plugged into your TC for backup,
You can plug a USB disk into a Time Capsule as long as it is compatible.. and the disk is formatted HFS+, ie Mac OS extended Journaled.
You need a USB powered hub if you want to use multiple hard disks and even one might still need a hub.
Not all external drives are recogised but for example the Touro Deskpro works fine.
You can buy them up to 4TB.. how much added space do you want.
Also notice that USB 2 on a TC or AE is slow.. I mean half the speed of the same disk plugged into your computer so consider if speed is relevant to you.
You cannot use TM to backup network disks.. again I am not 100% sure what the question means.

  • How do I add multiple passwords to a FileVault2 external hard disk?

    Hello,
On a boot volume, multiple users can have access to decrypt the disk - but with external disks it appears as though only a single password can grant access.
How can I enable a second passphrase to unlock a hard disk? Thanks.

Currently there's no way to add decryption keys to a non-boot volume.

    4. Hinges snapped, so disassembled completely but DID NOT remove the HD. Realised I'd bought hinges for the wrong model, so put it back together and worked fine.
Week later, new hinges mkII arrived. Disassembled again (stll didn't remove HD) replaced hinges, reassembled, and cue error message on startup.
I've tried reseating multiple times. Have reset the BIOS settings, and attempted t recover using F11 at stat up. Same error every time.
I've tried connecting to another laptop using an external HD box. Disk spins but does not show up in My compuer or device manager. Conclude this doesn't tseem good.
In a last ditch attempt to salvage files from said disk, I connected it directly into my toshiba laptop and prayed. And it worked - my laptop booted up in what appeared to be safe mode, and I was abe to burn files from the Pavilion HD to a DVD. (Took the HD back outt, put my toshiba HD back in and no damage done).
So...is the HD dead or not? I'm loathe to buy a new one just yet....

    Hello reaper_2,
I understand that you are getting an error 3F0.
    Turn off the computer.
As you power it back on tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.
    Run the startup test.
This will test all the hardware in the system and detect any problems.
Usually when you get this message the hard drive is going to fail.
Let me know how everything goes.

  • Dismount multiple external hard disk drives

I have multiple external hard disk drives and was wondering what the command line is that will dismount all of these at once? Note that there is also one external DVD unit as well which I would not want to dismount.
    Thanks,
    Lyman

    diskutil unmount "/path/to/disk";diskutil unmount "/path/to/disk";diskutil unmount "/path/to/disk"
Just replace replace "/path/to/disk" with the path to the mount point, leaving the quotes.
    Good luck!

  • Is it possible to have multiple partitions on my hard disk drive and use Bootcamp to install Windows?

    Hi all,
Here is my question: I have MBP early 2011 and was trying to install Windows 8 using Bootcamp but the option to install Windows is grayed out so I can’t click the box next to “Install or Remove Windows 7.” Is this because I have multiple partition on my hard disk drive? Is there anyway I can install Windows 8 using Bootcamp without deleting my partitions on my hard disk?
    Few more details:
    Mountain Lion 10.8.2
    Bootcamp 5.0.0
    Thanks for your response

You can't create a Boot Camp partition on a drive you've already partitioned, and you can't install Windows 8 through Boot Camp at this time.

If you want to add a second partition to the internal drive (in Disk Utility, select the drive, then open the partition tab and just click the + button), you should first be sure that you will have enough room to accommodate whatever the second volume will be. I am currently doing this for Snow and Mountain Lion.
To get to whatever volume is not the startup disk, restart and hold down option/alt at the chime, which will bring up a selection of the two volumes. Use the left or right arrow keys to select it and then hit enter/return.

    Hi
Sounds like you may have moved the RMX library folder?
Is RMX fully updated (for Lion)?
Check your hard drives for a file called SAGE:
It (or an alias of it) is normally found in the <USER>:Library:Application Support:Spectrasonics.
Note that on Lion, the <User> Library is 'hidden'... quickest way to get there is to hold down Option (Alt) whilst using the Finder:Go menu
