My 1440x1080 footage is letterboxed

When I create a DVD with my 1440x1080 footage it appears letterboxed on my 42" plazma tv. I want it to fill the screen. Can anyone tell me how to set it up to do so? Also, when I upload it to the web it appears letterboxed. In final cut my sequence settings are 1440x1080 and it seems to export as 16x9. I don't understand why it plays back as letterboxed. I appreciate the help.

Two things to look at: how is your DVD player set up to deliver the picture to your TV? Most have an on screen menu, make sure it is set to send a 16:9 image to the TV.
Where are you uploading the internet content?

  • Need help using 1440x1080 footage in a SD 4:3 timeline

    Hi Folks,
I need to use some AVCHD footage in a normal SD 4:3 timeline destined for a dvd. I'm trying to figure out the best workflow. The client provided a usb hard drive with some files extracted from a Sony hdr-sr5. I know the first problem is ingesting these files. I'm on a PPC G5 so I know using the L&T window isn't an option. I have experimented with using Toast to convert the files to ProRes 422 and that seems to work to some degree. I'm probably not doing it correctly because the footage shows up in FCP looking somewhat squished down and with letterbox bars above and below. In Toast the files indicate that they are h.264 1440x1080. When viewing in the Toast Video Player they get 'expanded' to 1920x1080. So I'm not sure why the footage gets letterboxed when converted to ProRes. So I guess that's the first part of the problem.
The second issue is that I just need to use the center crop of the image in a SD timeline. It's just talking head stuff so there's no problem cropping down. But I'm just not sure I understand the correct procedure for doing that once I have the footage ingested in the proper format.
I could definitely use some guidance here as the whole AVCHD thing is new to me.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Can't help with your first question, but create an sd 4:3 timeline. Drop your hd footage into it. It will come in letterboxed. In the motion tab, remove any distortion, scale and position to your liking

  • Adobe transmit displays 1440x1080 footage as 4:3

I've just upgraded to CS6 from 5.5 and have the following problem:
Panasonic P2 footage (AVC intra 50) is not displayed correctly on my production monitor (via Black Magic Intensity) - the image is being sqeezed to 4:3 when it should be anamorphic 16:9. The same goes for 1440x1080 ProRes footage.
However, the image is correct in the viewer window which places the bug in either Adobe Transmit or Black Magic's driver. Additionally, if I drop the same footage into and AVC-100 timeline then it displays correctly.
I looked at the AVC-intra 50 settings and they appear correct so I can't tell who's to blame here.
Anyone else having problems with AVC-intra 50 footage and a third party monitoring system like AJA or Matrox? I'd love to hear if other Black Magic users are having problems. I suspect it's the Black Magic driver...

Rolling back the driver would be a good way to determine the culprit. Only problem is that the old driver had flakey audio when turning on scrub, would drop frames and then catch up, and also had about 5 frames of latency. BUT at least I would find out if the new driver was the culprit.
I'll give it  a try just find out!

  • 16:9 footage being letterboxed on widescreen tv. Why?

    Footage shot in 16x9.
Edited in fcp in a 16x9 sequence setting.
Exported the movie and put in to compressor.
    Encoded at 90min, best, 16x9.
Put in to dvdsp and menu and video is 16x9 letterbox, not pan/scan or anything else.
Video plays on 4:3 tv with letterbox.
Video plays on widescreen tv (two different tv's) with letterbox.
This just isn't right, but I can't figure it out. Thank you in advance

You can try a reinstall of the software (make sure to remove the receipts) and also you can try a new user first.
1.) Which players were you trying this on and did Apple DVD Player change to 16:9?
2.) If the DVD SP Pro screen switched to 16:9 then it is working properly and could be the player you are trying. Sounds like it did not switch to 16:9 when you opened it in Apple DVD Player?
3.) Also when did you set 16:9 Letterbox on the track itself and not as a general default?
Could be wrong, but do not recall this issue coming up before if the settings in Final Cut, the encodes and DVD SP were correct (people have had improper settings before.) It is computer software and things can get bugs, but it is worth looking. The project open up from the build file DID NOT open properly in Apple DVD Player? - which is why yu said you had drop downs?
If you can say exactly the workflow, from original source footage, settings in Final Cut, the exact version of DVD SP, your OS it may show where it is falling apart, other than a general issue with DVD SP (since it seems not 16:9 ever worked properly for you?)
1.) Running OS 10.4.11 on a PowerBook G4 733 (yes?) It could be the computer maybe out of spec for the version of DVD SP....
2.) Running Final Cut Suite/Studio version with Final Cut xxx (???) on the system
3.) The original material is x capture on a x camera as x type of footage
    4.) Captured (how)
5.) Edited in a Final Cut sequence with the following settings:
6.) Exported from Final Cut as self contained/reference movie at what settings version
7.) Ran through Compressor and bitVice with the following settings
8.) Bought into DVD SP (which exact version)
    9. Set the track itself to 16:9 Letterbox?
10.) Built project and it did or did not open in 16:9 prior to burning.
11.) If it played back properly at 16:9, then burned to what brand DVD
12.) Tried it on Brand and models of DVD Players and television, with proper settings on both TV and DVD Player (check settings)
Some of the things, like brand of media, probably would not affect this issue.
Have you tried a 16:9 project in iDVD with a small portion of the footage that is exported from Final Cut Pro and does that work properly? (You can make a disc image in iDVD and mount with disk utility and play in Apple DVD Player?)

  • Exporting anamorphic footage to letterboxed 4x3

so, im having quite a few problems here and have been searching around the discussions for a while and cant seem to find any answer. If this has been answered and im just too tired to find it im sorry. anyway, it goes a little something like this...
so i've shot a bunch of stuff in squeeze mode using a dvx100b. brought that footy into fcp and edited everything in an anamorphic timeline (set up using the easy setup) and everything is looking pretty good. now comes the strange part.
im finished and ready to export (going for 16x9), so i go to file--> export--> quicktime movie. leaving it on current settings, i get a 4x3 version all squished up. so i try again, this time, setting the in and out points so im only exporting 5 seconds of the project (because im not waiting around if its not going to work again).
viola! it works, looks great, anamorphic, 16x9.
now i reset the in and out points, export the entire thing, and low and behold, im back to that squished 4x3.
so i guess, my final goal is to have 16x9 letterboxed in 4x3. i've been exporting first to 16x9, then usng quicktime to letterbox it.
so really i have been going through 2 steps to get this to work and there has to be an easier way. i just get squished or stretched all the time. hope someone has an idea or can point me in the right direction...
all software is updated to the most recent versions...
    thanks everybody

so i guess, my final goal is to have 16x9 letterboxed in 4x3. i've been exporting first to 16x9, then usng quicktime to letterbox it.
This is an inefficient way to go about things.
Create a new sequence using the easy preset for 4:3 DV.
Drop your 16:9 anamorphic sequence into it.
Load the sequence into the viewer, then select the MOTION tab.
Set Distort to 1.33 (or something like that)
    Export using Current Settings.
You will have a letter boxed version.
    Good luck.

  • Mixing "letterboxed" and "squeezed" footage in the same sequence

This is a good one. All footage shot on a DVX100, which has 2 ways of getting widescreen: squeeze and letterbox.
We shot 2 tapes worth of footage three weeks ago using squeeze for widescreen. I have since made a rough cut of all that footage.
Today, we shot the remaining scenes, but they were shot letterbox for widescreen (due to a communication errore between myself and the DP).
We discovered this halfway through shooting today, and decided to keep shooting letterbox because it will be easier to convert the squeezed footage to letterbox than vice versa.
Oh, and the squeezed footage is all outdoors, the letterboxed all indoors, so matching isn't an issue.
    My question(s) is (are):
How would you deal with this (reshoots are out of the question)?
Is there a simple way to convert the footage I've already edited without losing the edits?
Is there a magical fix that will fix it without any effort on my part? (just kidding about that last one)
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the tips!
What is your final output hoping to be? Do you need
anamorphic enhancement? (ie. you're outputting to
DVD, or for display on a 16:9 monitor, or for film)
It will be on DVD ultimately, but projected digitally for the premiere and possibly sent to festivals. It just needs to be widescreen, enhanced or not.
I take it your existing sequence is 16:9?
    Yes.
    If so...
    1. Open a new 4:3 sequence in the timeline.
    2. Drag your existing 16:9 sequence into the 4:3
sequence but don't let go of the mouse
    3. Press and hold the Command key, then release the
    mouse.
    4. The contents of your 16:9 sequence should
now be inserted (as letterboxed clips) into the 4:3
    sequence
I'll try this when I get home.
Or, when you meant 'convert the footage,' where you
    talking about the source files?
If it's as easy as those steps, great! However, the two formats need to output to DVD together. I assume this will simply add more render time to that end?
I don't care about the source files if I can ultimately output it harmoniously.
    Thanks again!

  • Export in HD 1280x720 16:9 without letterbox

I use a Canon HG20 and want to fit YouTube's widescreen with no letterbox but I can't seem to export in HD without a letterbox. A tutorial video said to use these settings
Key frames - Every 30 frames
    Data rate - Restrict to 1800 kbits/sec
    Dimensions - HD 1280x720 16:9
    Deinterlace source video
This is what I use, but there's a letterbox and there isn't supposed to be. It messes up the dimensions very much. How can I export with no letterbox?

AHA! That would be your problem. The actual clip is 1440x1080, but you were using a 720x480 DV-NTSC sequence. When HD media is placed in a SD sequence, it is scaled down and letterboxes are added.
Here's what you have to do:
    1. Select the sequence in the browser.
    2. Go to +Sequence > Settings > Load Sequence Preset > Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60+. Select it and click OK.
    3. Now you drag your 1440x1080 footage to the sequence and edit, etc.
    4. Export using the 1280x720 settings described above.
Unless I am very much mistaken, this should fix your problem.

  • Beginner question: can i have 16x9 and 4x3 footage on the same timeline?

    Hi,
I am assembling a highlight promo reel for somebody and i have 16x9 and 4x3 footage. not sure what to do or which footage to convert, since i need them both for the promo. any suggestions would be appreciated, or please direct me to a past discussion.
    thank you
    -shelby

If the majority of your footage is 4:3 work in a Timeline that is 4:3.
Your 16:9 footage will letterbox automatically to fit with black bars at top and bottom.
You could also cache the 4:3 material with the Widescreen filter to fake a 16:9 look.
If the majority is 16:9, use a 16:9 Timeline. Your 4:3 footage will pillarbox -black bars at left and right.
You could fill that area in by placing a copy of the 4:3 above itself on the Timeline. Enlarge and blur the lower layer to give your clip a complimentary "border". Simply blowing up 4:3 video to fit a 16:9 Timeline will make it look horrible.

  • Non-anamorphic footage, do I anamorph it?

    Quick question,
I'm just, literally, about to begin importing 19 episodes of a TV show so we can place them on DVD. The show was "SD widescreen" as the leader on the DVCAM tapes says, but it's not anamorphic. When I import a test clip in a widescreen timeline, I get a scrunched picture still with the black bars, so right now I'm inclined to just ingest in a regular 4:3 timeline and leave the black bars alone. However, to me, 16:9 is more pleasing and I like editing in it more, and I'd also like to do the best job I can here, which would be to make this true 16:9.
What's the easiest way to make something anamorphic? I tried cropping and then scaling, but I don't want to degrade the image by scaling it 133%. I'd also like to not need to export or really even render these approximately 19 hours of shows, but that may be asking too much. Is there, and if so what is, the easiest way to make footage already letterboxed to be true anamorphic not just 16:9 in a 4:3 frame.
    Thank you all,
    -Brian

Thanks Studio, that was exactly the experienced opinion I was looking for. Now I'm just hoping that my boss doesn't change his mind later on and decide he wants true widescreen DVDs. Definitely not going to web, so keeping it 4:3 it is.
    Muchos gracias,

  • 1920x1080 to 1440x1080 Down Converting

    Hi,
I shot a wedding with my Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon HDV30. The 5D Mark II is 1920x1080 and the HDV is 1440x1080 and I want to edit both on the same time line. I'm pretty sure I have to down convert the 1920x1080 footage to match the 1440x1080 footage but I don't really see where I can do this in compressor. Sorry I'm new to all this and can't figure it out on my own.

I think I figured it out here http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/compressor_h-264_moviesfcp.html
I'm going to change the dimensions to 1440x1080 and see what happens. If anyone else has any tips let me know. thanks.

  • Premiere CC not liking HDV footage

This has happened on two different Macs running latest Premiere CC. Trying to play Apple HDV 1080i60 (1440x1080) footage and it just starts falling apart and becomes unplayable (see screens). It especially does it when trying to fast forward through footage. The original footage plays back fine in Quicktime AND in Premiere CS6. It also plays fine on CC with my beefy Mac Pro 10.8.4. It was an older Mac Pro (10.7) and Macbook Pro (10.7) that had issues - both using Mercury software acceleraton only. They play back other codecs just fine. Any ideas?

How exactly was the footage captured?

  • 720p60 or 1080p30 for Letterboxed SD DVD?

I've been shooting 1080i60 with a Sony V1U for a couple of years, and have never been really happy with the results after using Compressor to convert this footage to letterboxed SD DVDs. (I use frame controls, etc.; still not pleased.)
I now have a Panasonic AG HMC150 camera, which I like a lot better; I've shot footage in 1080p30, and also in 720p60, which really improves pans and motion in general.
My question is, which format will give the best results using Compressor and DVD SP to produce letterboxed SD DVDs?
After shooting a few events (mostly stage plays and concerts in a theatre, without a lot of fast motion) I'll know which I want; I'm just looking for suggestions on which format to start out with, since I won't have time to experiment before the first events, which are coming up this week.

Hopefully this will bump your thread so that actual owners of the 150 will chime in, but in my experience (albeit with material delivered to me) 30p is the sweet spot.
60p doesn't downconvert to SD (and 30i) as well as 30p does.

  • HDV Aspect Ratio and Exporting For the Web

    INTRODUCTION
I am trying to export an HDV video for the first time and have managed to confuse myself. I want to upload it to blip.tv and they transcoded videos into Flash with 4:3 aspect ratio. But more than that, I want to understand how this all works so I don't have to guess about the settings that will give me what I want.
    BACKGROUND DATA
    4/3 is 1.333...
    16/9 is 1.777...
1440/1080 is 1.333... (if the pixels are square)
1920/1080 is 1.777... (if the pixels are square)
In FCP my clip format says:
    Frame Size: 1440 x 1080
Pixel Aspect: HD (1440 x 1080) (Does this mean the pixels are 1.333... times wider than it is high?)
    EXPORT USING QUICKTIME CONVERSION
When I go to export this clip using Quicktime Conversion under the Options... Size... dialog and look at the Dimensions dropdown, (I assume this is the dimensions of the exported video. Is that correct?)
Some of the settings are (the settings are in quotes, my notes are in parentheses.):
    "HD 1440 x 1080 16:9" (if pixels are square this is 4/3)
    "HD 1920 X 1080 16:9" (if pixels are square this is 16/9)
So both of these settings claim to be 16:9 but they both can't be true unless they have different pixel aspect ratios (which I find hard to believe). This makes me think I don't really know what they mean when they notate something as 16:9. Can anyone give a definition that will help me here?
    EXPORTING FOR THE WEB
Using FCS2, what settings should I use to export this clip undistorted for the web (with letterbox if needed)?
    Thanks for the help,
    Rob:-]

What I find with HDV 16x9 1440x1080 footage, is that when you output for the web you have to hard code the size you want the result to be. 320x180 or 640x360 for example scale things nicely. If you want bigger, just do the math.
I don't know why but whenever I select a predefined output size, it always screws it up (I don't work with 4:3 ever, so I'm speaking only of 16x9). So I always enter the size I want.
And as far as Compressor 3, I really can't get that to set the size I want correctly either. Mostly its due to me being lazy and not wanting to spend a year reading the Compressor manual. A package that should basically have the easiest interface known to man is now so complicated that unless I have to hand-holding tutorial, or get to drag/drop one of their presets, I end up screwing things up with it. Not to mention that you get to wait for hours just to see how you screwed up the settings of your output.

  • Pixel Aspect Ratio Issues-FCP HELPP!!!

Okay folks, so currently I am putting together my reel in FCP, however I am encountering a few issues. So my source formats are different in pixel aspect ratio, some was shot on the 7D, some on the Alexa, and some on super 16mm, and a few after effects animations. However all of it is HD, and in ProresHQ 422. My problem here is when I import all of my media into FCP if the timeline is set to square pixels, the HD(1440x1080) footage looks squished, and if I set the timeline to HD(1440x1080) the square pixel footage looks blocky, pixelated and super square.
That said, some of the footage from the 7D is labelled as square and some is labelled as HD(1440x1080), and all the after effects stuff is square.
Right now i am dealing with it and just leaving my timeline as green-preview render, so everything looks mostly normal. However whichever format is not that of the timeline, the footage is degraded a tiny bit, so that when I pause the footage it looks great, but in preview it is slightly blurry.
My question is, is there a way to format everything as either square or HD(1440x1080), so it looks normal, or is there a way to use mixed media formats and not have the preview blur. I'm going crazy over here, as I just graduated and am in dire need of a reel so I can begin to apply for jobs, etc....Or is there a way to formate my prores setting to transform everything to square pixels?
    Thanks guys!

You can use compressor to convert everything to square pixels, however there's no need to worry about how it looks in fcp when it's playing but not fully rendered.  Try exporting a short section (mark an in and out around the section - and going file:  export: quicktime Not quicktime conversion) with current settings.  If you render the material, it should look fine when you play it within fcp.  Unfortunately, the render settings in the sequence menu are not particularly intuitive, but do a little playing around with them if you've got the time.
I prefer to convert all my sources to my intended pixel dimensions, frame rate and codec before I edit in fcp, but it may not be necessary in your case.

  • PLEASE NEED HELP WITH OUTPUTTING HDV/DV!! 16:9 to 4:3!! NEED HELP NOW!

ok. I started out with HDV footage. Imported that edited it native HD into final cut 5, didn't downconvert. Now I am trying to output the finished work onto a dv camera through firewire. At first i nested the HDV sequence into a NTSC sequence, but the video wouldn't go through to the camera, only audio. I thought it was a connection problem, but then i played some DV footage and it went to the camera fine. So then i exported the DV sequence as a quicktime movie in NTSC form, but that really cropped the 16:9 footage and made it unwatchable. How can i take the 16:9 HDV footage, and letterbox it so that it fits inside a 4:3 frame without cutting off any of the original frame, and then export that to a DV camera? Let me know if you need more info, please help this is due tomorrow!! ahhhhh!

When you Export using QuickTime Conversion, to DV Stream, you get an option of what the aspect ratio should be. Select 16:9 and the DV stream will be what you're looking for. Opening that in FCP and sending it to the camera should work out well.
