Non-anamorphic footage, do I anamorph it?

Quick question,
I'm just, literally, about to begin importing 19 episodes of a TV show so we can place them on DVD. The show was "SD widescreen" as the leader on the DVCAM tapes says, but it's not anamorphic. When I import a test clip in a widescreen timeline, I get a scrunched picture still with the black bars, so right now I'm inclined to just ingest in a regular 4:3 timeline and leave the black bars alone. However, to me, 16:9 is more pleasing and I like editing in it more, and I'd also like to do the best job I can here, which would be to make this true 16:9.
What's the easiest way to make something anamorphic? I tried cropping and then scaling, but I don't want to degrade the image by scaling it 133%. I'd also like to not need to export or really even render these approximately 19 hours of shows, but that may be asking too much. Is there, and if so what is, the easiest way to make footage already letterboxed to be true anamorphic not just 16:9 in a 4:3 frame.
Thank you all,
-Brian

Thanks Studio, that was exactly the experienced opinion I was looking for. Now I'm just hoping that my boss doesn't change his mind later on and decide he wants true widescreen DVDs. Definitely not going to web, so keeping it 4:3 it is.

-Brian

  • Footage not capturing anamorphic

I have 24p anamorphic footage coming in from an XL2 that won't capture anamorphic. My capture settings are set to DV NTSC Anamorphic and it has worked before but now the footage stays 4:3. I have tried multiple capture tests with other settings and can't get the footage to come in Anamorphic. Any thoughts?

Actually, what worked before was that I just captured it anamorphic and I didn't have to set my sequence to anamorphic. That way it doesn't need to be rendered. I have checked the anamorphic setting in the capture settings but the clip isn't checked as anamorphic when captured.

  • How to un-squeeze anamorphic footage after sound is synced?

    Hello,
I imported some anamorphic footage, then synced all the sound, and am now trying to fix the aspect ratio/un-squeeze it. But the "interpret footage" option is greyed out.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

strange, not sure why you cannot access interpret footage...  does this happen in other projects? is it only happening with certain footage? if so what format?  latest version of premiere etc?
a work around may be to nest your sequence, and then adjust the scale in effects>motion>uncheck uniform scale.  then adjust hight and width to fill frame or close to desired result. you could import and overlay a picture at proper ratio to compare if needed.

  • Anamorphic footage distorted after multiclip cut

This question has been posted a few times but no answers yet.
I'm editing a multiclip of 2 cameras, both anamorphic footage. I put the multiclip in an anamorphic sequence. At first everything is fine.
BUT once I make a cut to my 2nd camera, that 2nd cam's "distort" attribute changes from 0 to 33.33 EVERY TIME. No biggie, I can remove that attribute but it's getting annoying! It's only the 2nd cam ... if I cut back to the first cam, it remains undistorted.
The "anamorphic" column in Item Properties is check for both cams & multiclip ... even the distorted cam. So any other ideas???

I JUST had this issue happen to me. Unfortunately my eSATA expresscard prematurely ejected causing my scratch drive to go offline. Upon reconnecting the media, it told me that some files out points were off and needed to be adjusted, or something like that. My multiclip continued through the end, but I immediately noticed that my previously 16:9 footage was now 4:3 within a 16:9 frame. After checking to make sure they were Checked anamorphic, I opened the files in the Finder, which were still anamorphic. The solution was what was listed above, Remove Attributes->Distort. Somehow a distort was added to my clips. Selecting all and removing cleared a hassle that could've taken infinitely longer to fix but also just to diagnose. This isn't as much an answer to your problem but as help for anyone else having this problem with multiclips and not being anamorphic.

  • Revert to non-optimized footage

    Hi,
If I import AVCHD footage and create optimized footage (i.e. prores), is there any way to revert back to the non-optimized footage once done editing to save hard drive space? What would happen if I just delete all the prores files - will the project break or try to open the SD card backup?
    Thanks

Yes, you can just select the clips, Control-click and use Transcode Media to create either optimized or proxy media.

  • Anamorphic Footage on DVD...Final Cut Express 2.0.3 & iDVD 4.0.1

    Hello again everyone,
My latest project involves 5 short QuickTime Movies edited together in one sequence in Final Cut Express 2.0.3. I am trying to now burn that sequence to DVD but I am having some "issues"...
Three of these QuickTIme Movies are DV PAL Anamorphic and the other two are DV PAL (not anamorphic) and all five have been edited into a DV PAL Anamorphic Sequence in Final Cut Express 2.0.3. This works great when viewed in the canvas.
What I have been trying to do next is export the whole sequence using File/Export/QuickTime Movie so I end up with one whole exported QuickTime Movie, containing the five other QuickTime Movies, that I can then import into iDVD 4.0.1.
The export works fine and I can import the new QuickTime Movie into a PAL iDVD 4.0.1 project but the footage looks 4:3 and not anamorphic.
When exported the QuickTime Movie does not seem to have preserved the pixel aspect ratio of my sequence (anamorphic)...
Can anyone please offer some advice here? What is the best way to export Anamorphic PAL sequences out of Final Cut Express 2.0.3 as QuickTime Movies that can then be imported into iDVD 4.0.1 (or DVD Studio Pro and other apps) with the correct pixel aspect ratio (Anamorphic PAL)?
Is this something that iDVD can't handle and needs to be done in DVD Studio Pro or do I need to change my export settings in Final Cut Express 2.0.3......or do I need to export it from Final Cut Pro instead?
    Regards,
    Justin Pamenter

I think iDVD 5 is the first version of iDVD to support anamophic. Sounds like you did the right stuff in FCE. You had the Easy Setup on anamorphic when you captured and when you created the anamorphic sequence.
Take a look at the iDVD forum or Google "iDVD Anamorphic".

  • Setting timeline for Anamorphic footage shot 24fps

    I have footage I shot with a Panasonic DVX100a.
I shot 24p with the Anamorphic lens.
When I import into the FCP timeline the settings give me a choice of 24fps..or Anamorphic. There does not seem to be an option that includes
    both.
I need to cut this film for output to film- so I need to have a 24 timeline.
of course - I also want to see the image at the right aspect.
    How can I do this?

you need to go in and edit the capture preset... I usually copy the preset and rename it. add the anamorphic check box.
HOWEVER... did you shoot 24p or 24pA.
If you shot 24p then leave it as a normal 29.97 sequence. The cadence is 3.2.3.2 not 2.3.3.2.

  • Footage in Pal anamorph get blurry in fcp x, (not sharp as on original File... )

When i import footage pal anamorph into fcp pro x, it gets blurry.
    Its not the field dominance:-)
Ist there a Function to tell fcp x that it is anamorph?
    Thanx mike

It is a Animation Pal File (Typo and Packshot, where you see the sharpness perfektly) generated in AE.
If i compare the same file without doing anything to it, it looks a little blurry especially the typo.
    Thanx

  • Bringing anamorphic footage into a 4:3 Motion project

I'm sure this is an easy fix but I haven't really had a day off in weeks so I'm a little fried. I have DV Cam footage that was shot anamorphically. When placed in a 16:9 sequence in FCP with the anamorphic box checked in the item settings everything is fine. I have to incorporate this footage into a 4:3 Motion project that I already created. When I bring it into Motion, it is squeezed to fit the 4:3 aspect ratio. How do I make the footage 16:9 in Motion?

Open up the inspector for the media, there is a drop down menu in there.
or you could just drag the x dimension out to 133%

  • Anamorphic Footage****

    Hi,
I recently shot some stuff in the anamorphic setting and when I was capturing my footage, I didn't have the correct settings in Final Cut.
After digitizing, all I did was just click the anamorphic 16:9 check box in the item properties and clicked "yes" when I dropped the footage into the timeline to change it to what it's supposed to be.
Is this enough? Everything seems to look fine, but I'm wondering if there was any quality lost or anything that should make me go back and capture it with the correct settings.
    Thank you.

If you recorded and captured DV, the only difference between 16:9 and 4:3 is the way FCP interprets the pixel aspect ratio. They are both 720x480 (if dealing with NTSC). The check box toggles between a .9 and a 1.2 interpretation ratio. The original material is not affected.

  • Checking 16x9 Anamorphic Footage for 4:3 Action/Title Safety

I am working in place where most things are coming in 16x9 SD, with some mixed 4:3 footage as well. The graphics department as provided an element to place over the 4:3 footage to fill in the sides for 16x9.
However here s a little station logo on that graphic that has been reported to be out of safety on a 4:3 monitor. If my sequence timeline is setup for 720x480 (Anamorphic) how can I check Action/Title safety for 4:3?

  • Need to edit footage shot in anamorphic/Sqeeze with footage shot widescreen

Okay, so I had two DPs who were supposed to sync the footage specs and didn't. Now I have part of the project that was shot in anamorphic/squeeze on dvx100a and then part of the footage shot in regular widescreen 16x9 on dvx100a. I've been told those are two different pixel ratios... how do I do this?
Help. Under deadline for dvd distribution for this web series. Thanks!

Hey Shawn.. for sure, I am going to edit it in final cut but the first part of the project, the sequence setting had to be set to anamorphic. When I do that for the second half shot in widescreen, it distorts it.
I'm not sure how to solve that, since the output to digibeta has to be continuous. If I do a sequence in anamorphic, the widescreen distorts, and visa versa.
    Any suggestions for that?

  • Widescreen and letterbox using same anamorphic footage

Is there a way to take a single source file that is anamorphic 720 x 480 (1.20) and have two buttons: one widescreen and one letterboxed -- so those with widescreen tv's can watch it in it's native aspect ratio, and those with 4:3 tv's can select the letterboxed version.
Right now, I am taking the anamorphic QT source file and placing it in it's own track, and then downconverting the anamorphic master making a letterboxed QT file and placing it in another track. I'm probably doing this the long way around, but it works. Just looking for a quicker way.
    Thanks.
    David Barker

Encode the track as 16:9, do not make another version that is letterboxed, then set track to 16:9 letterbox in the inspector (NOT pan & scan or pan&scan/letterbox)
The track will be 16:9 on 16:9 tvs and letterboxed on 4:3 (though people can mess with their DVD PLayer and TV settings)

  • Exporting anamorphic footage to letterboxed 4x3

so, im having quite a few problems here and have been searching around the discussions for a while and cant seem to find any answer. If this has been answered and im just too tired to find it im sorry. anyway, it goes a little something like this...
so i've shot a bunch of stuff in squeeze mode using a dvx100b. brought that footy into fcp and edited everything in an anamorphic timeline (set up using the easy setup) and everything is looking pretty good. now comes the strange part.
im finished and ready to export (going for 16x9), so i go to file--> export--> quicktime movie. leaving it on current settings, i get a 4x3 version all squished up. so i try again, this time, setting the in and out points so im only exporting 5 seconds of the project (because im not waiting around if its not going to work again).
viola! it works, looks great, anamorphic, 16x9.
now i reset the in and out points, export the entire thing, and low and behold, im back to that squished 4x3.
so i guess, my final goal is to have 16x9 letterboxed in 4x3. i've been exporting first to 16x9, then usng quicktime to letterbox it.
so really i have been going through 2 steps to get this to work and there has to be an easier way. i just get squished or stretched all the time. hope someone has an idea or can point me in the right direction...
all software is updated to the most recent versions...
    thanks everybody

This is an inefficient way to go about things.
Create a new sequence using the easy preset for 4:3 DV.
Drop your 16:9 anamorphic sequence into it.
Load the sequence into the viewer, then select the MOTION tab.
Set Distort to 1.33 (or something like that)
    Export using Current Settings.
You will have a letter boxed version.
    Good luck.

  • DV NTSC Anamorphic to DV50 NTSC Anamorphic

I created a photo only slideshow using DV NTSC Anamorphic as my Easy Setup. I then learned that DV50 is a better codec for that. I changed Easy Setup to DV50 NTSC Anamorphic and dragged my DV sequence into the new DV50 sequence. I said "no" when it asked to change sequence setting to match clips. The new sequence looks fine, but I was surprised that I didn't get render bars. It's still 720x480 & 48kHz, so I'm assuming that's why?
    1) Am I causing myself any problems by doing this? Losing any quality?
    2) Should I also go into Sequence Settings (Cmd 0) & change Render Control to Apple ProRes 422? I know the file will be bigger, but is there any other reason why you would not do that when trying for the best quality?
    Thanks.

    Hi -
You don't need to change your Easy Set Up.
Make a duplicate of your DV sequence (click on the sequence icon in the browser and control-click on it. From the drop down menu choose duplicate). and then load +the copy+ to the timeline by double clicking on the copy sequence's icon. This will keep you original sequence safe in case something goes wrong.
Click anywhere on the copy sequence timeline and type Command + 0 (zero) to bring up the Sequence Settings. Change the Quicktime Video Settings Compressor to DVCPRO50-NTSC. Click OK and you are done. You will need to re-render.
You don't lose quality - you gain it because DVCPRO50 is a better compression codec.
In answer to you second question, I would just render in the Sequence Codec of DVCPRO50 as the quality gain you will get by rendering in ProRes 422 will, IMHO, depending on your source material, be too subtle to be worth doing. But if you want to do it, go ahead. It will just use a lot more disk space and place a heavier load on your drives to playback the ProRes 422 parts.
    Hope this helps.
