My Airport Express was knocked out by a lightning surge

My Airport Express was knocked out by a lightning surge through the exterior cable from the street. Can it be mended? The cable modem attached to the Airport extreme was also knocked out although still powered by electrcity from the wall. The Airport Extreme that was attached to the modem was completely dead! Anythting can be done to revive it!

Sorry, but in most cases it is not possible to repair lightning damaged products. Unfortunately, you'll likely need to replace them. If you have an Apple store in your vicinity, you might want to contact them to discuss your options.
In the future, you might want to invest a high quality surge protection type power strip to help protect your senstive electronic components.

Why does my airport express keep cutting out?

I have a 1st gen Airport Express and use it to stream music from my PC, iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch. My Airport Express is connected to a Teac UD-H01 DAC via an optical cable which is connected to an amp and speakers. I had no problems at all with this set up until I upgraded the Airport Express firmware to 7.6.3. The sound then started to drop out frequently. To cut a long story short after various testing, the problem had to be the Airport Express. I called Apple support but they were not much help and couldn't fix the problem and said they would speak to engineering and phone back. While I was waiting I decided to have another go to find the problem and opened the airport utility and saw that there was an option to downgrade the firmware. At this point I realised that the problems started about the same time that I upgraded the firmware to 7.6.3 but didn't think at the time that Apple would release a firmware that didn't work. Anyway I downgraded to 7.6.1 and hey presto, everything worked again. A couple of days ago I noticed that firmware 7.6.4 was available and thought I'd give it a go, not good - same problem as 7.6.3. I've downgraded to 7.6.1 again and all is well. Hope this helps.

  • Airport Express light went out, stopped working.

Airport Express light went out. iMac says the connection is "excellent," but it's not working (I use it to stream audio) and is getting very warm. Did it die?

The usual cause of a dark LED is a failed AirPort Express. The reason your iMac reports an "excellent" connection is a mystery, but would be explained if it is actually connected to a different wireless network.
The only potential remedy is a "hard reset" (see below). In rare occasions, repetitive and persistent attempts have been known to revive an ailing Express. There isn't anything else you can do. A "factory defaults reset" is identical, but is performed by keeping its reset button depressed while connecting it to power. Try that also.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then gently press and hold its tiny reset button. Don't apply any more force than required to feel a tactile click.  Keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • If the front end on my 6111 was 'knocked-out'..

if the front end on my 6111 was 'knocked-out'... would the MAX device test report an error

If you are talking about, right clicking on the input channel and bringing up "test panel" it would show an error only if the "Knock-out" caused the input values to be out of range. Other wise you would would see some wrong value displayed.

  • HT4587 my airport express regularly cuts out after 6 seconds of playback. Why?

I've had an airport express for several years. Used to work fine with ibook, but since getting imac 18 months ago, when I play a tune it plays the first 6 seconds through my hi fi then cuts out.

Just got back to my home machine (Sony Vaio, Windows
XP SP2) and installed the latest version of iTunes
(6.0.1.3), upgrading from the last 5.0 version I also
recently installed. Installation went fine, started
it up, it wouldn't see my Airport Express. I've got
my Sony hooked up through a hub to a Linksys Wireless
Access Point (WAP54G) which then broadcasts to the
Airport Express in my living room, hooked up to my
stereo. The setup has worked flawlessly for the past
year or so, throughout numerous iTunes upgrades (4.x,
    5.x, etc).
So I plugged and unplugged the Airport Express in the
living room as my Base Station Chooser couldn't see
it. 30 seconds later, it's up and there it is in the
Base Station Chooser. iTunes 6 even sees it ("JVC
Living Room" is the selection option). When I got to
select it in iTunes, I get the "Connecting to 'JVC
Living Room...'" dialogue pop up and it simply sits
    and spins. No connection.
I went to the Apple site, looked through some support
docs, noticed that my version of the Airport Express
software was out of date. I was running 4.0.1, not
4.2 for Windows. So I downloaded that, updated it,
    started it up, same thing.
So I'm sitting here now with the following situation:
    iTunes 6.0.1.3
    Airport Express running 4.2 admin
    iTunes can see it
Base Station Chooser can see it
    I've got a green light
    I can't connect.
I'm not getting any error messages. It simply sits
    and spins.
    Any help?
    Cheers,
    Gord.
I have the exact same problem! ( and same hardware!!) HELP!!!

  • Airport Express with optical out?

I've been looking at doing some streaming music throughout my house. I was thinking the Airport Express would work since it has optical out then it could outpout to one of my other stereo systems. However after looking around I can't find it anymore.
Did Apple discontinue the Airport Express that plugs into the wall and has the optical out?

Yes, a new version....with a power cord..... and a lot more....was introduced in June.

You can still get refurbished versions of the disontinued model...with "new" warranty from the online Apple Store.

  • My AirPort Express was successfully set up, but internet won't connect.

I recently purchased an AirPort Express to be used as the main source of Wi-Fi in my home. I followed the instructions in both the manual and on the computer to set up a new network, and the AirPort set up successfully and lit up green. Only problem is that when I tried to connect to Safari and Mail, it said there was no internet connection, even though it recognized the network. When I went to change the settings, it said there was no valid IP address. I've tried this on 3 different computers, resetting it for each one, and got the same results every time.
If you have any ideas to what could be causing this and how it could be fixed, could you please help?
    Thanks.

I'm currently connected to the internet from a broadband cable modem, as are the other computers I tried this on.
Whenever you connect something different to a cable modem, they usually have to be power-cycled for the change to be recognized. It wouldn't hurt to reset everything else while you're waiting.
Here's what Tesserax usually says in this sort of situation:
It's always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your network components when changing configurations.
    Please try the following:
o Power-off the broadband cable modem, AirPort Express Base Station (AX) and computer(s); Order is not critical. Leave all off for at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-on the cable modem; wait at least 10 minutes.
o Plug-in the AX; wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s).
Your Express should be configured to connect via Ethernet, configure IPv4 "via DHCP", and connection sharing should be set to "share a public IP address" which will distribute individual IP addresses to your computers.
It should go without saying, but also be sure your computers are all connected to your Express's wireless network (under the "fan" icon in the menubar), and that their network port configurations are correct - if all this doesn't make sense to you, reply for more help.

  • Airport Express keeps dropping out

    Summary of my network
Cable Modem->Ethernet Switch->Airport Express-> Wifi Network; iMac 27, Macbook pro 13, Macbook, iPhone 4, Palm Pre and just recently Apple TV.
Since adding the apple TV, the network will just drop out while streaming from the iMac. in recent months, I've come back to my iMac disconnected from the network. I'd have to select the proper network in the dropdown box. Now, the only resolution to the problem is to unplug the Airport Express and wait for it to reboot. Everything is up to date, running Latest Snow Leopard.

try downgrading to 6.1.1 from 6.3. I had to download the software from apple to do it but after that my AX hasn't dropped out since.

  • Do Airport Express modems wear out over time

I periodically ( a few times a week) lose my connection with the Internet through Comcast.  I have two Airport Express units n our home that is our wireless network.  They are synced together.  I will lose connectivity with one or both and have to disconnect from power for about a minute and then plug back in, then all is well until the next failure.  Do these units wear out over time?  Is there a better Apple product to use in this situation?  I am using a Motorola modem in this process.
    Thanks,
    Mike

The physical law of entropy is stronger than God. Therefor, anything and everythign will break down given a long enough time. However, I think you may be worrying a bit too much here. Your express should generally last long enough.. until you plan to change 802.11n to another better format.
Yes, some go bad time to time, hence why limited warranty is only a year from DoP.
I suspect your issue may be due to interference. I'm curious what band are you using on those expresses.

  • Swapped From Time Capsule TO Airport Express - Constant Drop Outs

I recently switched my main network from Time Capsule to my Airport Express so I could play music etc... But since then every few hours I'll get an error saying the Time Capsule can't connect, then maybe 20 minutes later both the Airport Express and Time Capsule eventually start flashing yellow... If I leave it all overnight it just seems to fix itself or if I turn it off/on it all fixes itself... I have always had strange issues with Airport Express even one I had 2 years ago... But Time Capsule when I bought it I never had any dramas, the only reason I switched is so I could listen to music wirelessly... Are there any settings in Airport Express that I would need to look at? And also do I need to update any of my settings in Time Capsule to make it work better with Airport Express?

These are the logs if there is a guru out there who can see an issue would be much appreciated!

  • Airport Express keeps dropping out after update to Mavericks

I have just updated my fairly old system (iMac 2008) to Mavericks and experience has been mostly positive. However the Airport Express that I have been using for years as a network client to play music from iTunes on my hi-fi has now stopped working reliably. It constantly drops the music every few seconds to the point it is unuseable. Generally the green light (on the Express) stays on but for long drop-outs (say over 3s) the orange light starts flashing, then the green light comes back on again.
The only things that have changed are software updates. The iMac has been updated from 10.5.8 to 10.9. iTunes is now 11.1.3 and the Airport Express asked for a firmware update so I did that too. No new hardware has been added, no new RF items have been introduced to the house, nothing has changed position.
The Airport Express is model no A1264. The wireless router is a Netgear model from VirginMedia.
This is really frustrating as its the only job the £80 airport express has to do and now it doesn't.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

  • Why would Airport Express signal cut out every afternoon?

I have had an Airport Express router for several years.  In the past few years, our wireless signal shuts down in the late afternoon, usually around the same time each day.  I have to unplug and plug it back in, then restart the computer for it to work. ?

This is almost certainly someone that is coming home about the same time each day and firing up their wireless network, or a high power wireless device, gaming console, etc. causing interference for other close neighbors. He might be using a high power antenna for his wireless network as well.
Another possibility is a nearby cordless phone which can create interference as well. I won't bore you with a story about this at this time.
When you unplug the AirPort Express and plug it back in, the Express automatically scans to find the best available channel to use at the time....and things are usually OK for awhile until the available channels get overloaded again.
If the AirPort Express is located near an outside wall of your home, try relocating it to an interior wall or room as much as possible. This will help shield some of the interference coming from networks and cordless phones at your neighbors.
Unfortunately, there are probably ten times more wireless networks than there were a few years ago, yet we have the same number of wireless channels to use that we did 10 years ago. Things are really overcrowded....an unfortunate fact of life for those living in crowded areas.
Some folks living in apartments, condos, etc are finding out more and more that they simply cannot rely on wireless, and must use a wired connection for stability.

  • My AirPort Express now drops out almost every night.

The green light remains on as though all is fine, but it completely loses wi-fi signal.
It goes from a full bar perfect wi-fi signal (which it's had for over a year) to zero bars of wi-fi instantly - and then it remains off.
This has been confirmed wtih multiple computers.
About 20% of the time it will come back on by itself after about 10 minutes.
The other 80% of the time, I have to crawl over my television and audio system, unplug the AE and allow it to restart.
This is starting to become maddening. It appears the device itself is defective.
I have installed the latest updates.
