  • Apple TV: unable to check for downloads

I have rented movies on my Apple TV before, but when I tried to rent a movie recently on Apple TV I couldn't get it to work. I went through all the steps but it didn't start downloading. And when I went to check for downloads, this message came up, "unable to check for downloads". Everything else works perfect, so I have no idea why this is happening. Anyone have any thought on this?

Ha! That must be a popular movie, because we're trying to rent Shaun of the Dead over here as well. Same symptoms as everyone else is reporting, D.C. Metro area. I've rebooted the device, disconnected and reconfigured the WLAN settings, logged out and back into iTunes Store, and nothing fixes it. Still getting "Unable to check for downloads" when I do what the device tells me to do.
Argh. How's about a bit of that famous "Customer Service," Apple?

  • Why does my apple tv say it is unable to check for downloads?

I have disconected my internet like three times and restarted my apple tv. Yesterday, I used reset settings but I fixed that. How can I make it download my shows and movies if it says that is unable to check for downloads. I do have great internet.

    I'm having the same problem!!!!
I rented a movie it downloaded...but i wont check for downloads!!

  • After install of 10.0 I get "unable to check for download , unknown error 3603

after I installed ver 10 of Itunes,
I get "unable to check for download , unknown error 3603"
Now I can not get to my downloads at all

Follow these instructions to completely remove Apple software
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Then use free Ccleaner to repeatly repair your registry until it's fixed.
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
    download iTunes again from Apple.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/
If you have 64bit Vista or Windows 7, look for the seperate download of iTunes for that further down the page.
Once installed, use the Apple Software Update under your Start Menu to fully update all Apple components.
Your content will remain on the drive in the Music > iTunes Folder, nothing is deleted.
You should be making backups of your content regularly, either through iTunes or via copying the iTunesFolder in your Music folder to a external drive.
Windows is notorious for having "other" issues that make it unstable, we as volunteers helping others can't always resolve those issues.

  • "Unable to check for downloads" message -- how do I see the movie I rented?

I just rented "The King of Kong" through my AppleTV and it tells me to go to Settings-Downloads-Check for Downloads to view it, but when I do I always get "Unable to check for downloads"! So how exactly do I see the movie I just rented? And of course there is no one live at customer support at this hour. This is not the seamless experience I've always heard people are supposed to have with Apple products!

Same problem on 3rd rental--"Over Her Dead Body." Amazing how many times this title appears on this thread. Coincidence or server issue? I haven't tried renting since this problem. Title appears in iTunes account; checking "purchases" under "Store" shows all purchases downloaded. Still get "Cannot check for downloads" message on ATV for two days now. 2d request into Apple Support now; will see what they say.

  • Just upgraded to lion and now my iTunes says the store is temporarily unavailable and it is unable to check for downloads

I only upgraded to Lion because of iCloud. I have an AppleTV, an iPhone 4S and my MacBook Pro so it just made sense.  But now, I was in the process of downloading a season of a TV show that I purchased earlier today and it still had about 15 episodes left to go and it now says "iTunes Store is temporarily unavailable, iTunes is unable to check for downloads" Any help would be appreciated!

maybe they are doing maintenance?  I would wait awhile and check back later.

  • Unable to check for Downloads

I rented a movie a couple of days ago, still not in in "downloads..?" I get the "Unable to check for dowloads" message each time I try. I have since purchased two movies and rented another without any issues. ANY IDEAS? THanks

I had the same problem and this worked. First do a factory reset of the apple tv - hold down the menu and the "-" key for about 6 seconds and the unit will reset. Then in the menu choose "factory reset". the unit will now reset all settings (including all network and account information which will have to be re-input later). When the unit restarts put in your network info. Then do a software update - there is new software which seems to be causing the problem (perhaps you can try the software update without resetting the unit first???) Anyway, after the software update and another restart the unit worked fine and downloads worked again. Good luck,

  • "Unable to check for available downloads" since upgrade to 8.1

It appears a number of people are having this problem but are all under different headings...
I can purchases new music/items and have them download right away, but it appears anything that was waiting for me to download prior to the upgrade to 8.1 is stuck somewhere. When checking for Downloads (no matter which way you do it) I get an error that says "Unable to check for available downloads. The iTunes store is temporarily unavailable."
Troubleshooting guides suggest ensuring your firewall is allowing all permissions appropriately... I even turned them to "ask for permission" so that I would know it was trying. No luck.
When is Apple going to recognize there's a problem? If I can purchase new items and get them to download right away, clearly there is no issue with ISP or Firewall.

Having the same issue. I even downloaded a rental last night to have it disappear this morning and it says I have purchased the rental but never downloaded it. I have played with all network settings include as open as possible and no luck.

This device does not have a sim card in it. Could this be the reason or am I missing something when I am trying to update.
Yes. You can't update or restore any GSM iPhone without a valid sim card installed in the phone. The sim card need not be activated, but it must be valid & present. If you want to update, you need to get a sim card.

  • Unable to check for available downloads...  Try again later.

"Unable to check for available downloads.  The iTunes Store is temporarily available.  Please try again later."   Forever, really.
It all started when I attempted to "Download All Updates" (104 of them) and it crashed.  Now it tells me that I've already purchased the items, and to "Check for Available Downloads", which throws the above error for going on three days now.  Email support has not answered my inquiry / report.
In the meantime, the "Genius Folks" in the Apple Store inspired me to a partial workaround, at least to whittle down the queue.  By installing the apps to my device, updating them there, and syncing them back to iTunes.  But I still have a few stuck in some weird state, that iTunes is unprepared to process.
BTW, the geniuses never heard of this problem, even after I showed them that a quick Google search came right back with 404,000 hits.   I've seen iTunes unable to connect to the Store when there were too many updates, for years, on both Windows and OSX, and many released versions, but I've always been able to download them individually, instead of in bulk.  First time it crashed and left me hosed.
Seems like a server-side issue.  Any suggestions on how to get through to the powers that be, and have my queue cleaned up?  And maybe get the attention of the Q/A and development departments to actually acknowledge and fix a long standing and most inconvenient bug?

Thank you so much - I have spent the last 4 days scouring internet forums trying to solve this problem (I couldn't connect to the iTunes store/download any apps or updates) and just as I was about to give up I stumbled across your post. I can't believe I've had such big problems all because of the ampersand in my billing address! How did you discover this?! It's such a small detail! To my huge relief it's all sorted now and I can now update my apps and download again! I'll be cancelling my appointment at the genius bar tomorrow too! Thanks again very much!

  • Unable to check for purchases problem . . .

    Hi,
I mentioned this problem in another thread, but I think a new one is warranted.
I too have received the "Unable to check for purchases" message after upgrading some songs using iTunes Plus. After allowing for the initial congestion to die down, it has now been over a month since I bought them, yet I still can't get the songs.
But, my question is this. I emailed iTunes Customer Service, and I have received a reply requesting my billing details. I've checked, and this is information that Apple already holds. I'm a little suspicious about this request, here is the email:
"I am sorry that you are not able to download your items that are currently in your download queue. To help troubleshoot this for you, I would like for you to reply to this email.
In this email if you could please include the billing address associated with your account. I will also need your permission to test your account and reset your password.
Once we have received this information, we will verify, reset your password and test your account. You will then receive a follow up email with you new password and the results of our test."
Does this email sound realistic? Has anyone else received an email like this from iTunes Customer Service? I hope I can reset my password afterwards also.

Yes, this email is realistic and not an uncommon reply (I also had such a reply when once I had a problem with the iTunes Store). The iTunes Store customer service rep sometimes needs to be able log into your account and check things when a problem arises, and it's something they can't do without resetting the password since they don't have access to your current password, they can only change it. So I don't think you need to worry.

  • Unable to check for available downloads. the network connection was lost

in my downloads window in iTunes it shows i have "28 iTunes downloads available". when i try to download them, i get the error "Unable to check for available downloads. the network connection was lost."
my connection is fine though, as i can individually download purchases by clicking on the cloud icon.

I followed the advice on Holgr's link, i used screen flow to capture the error message, and then made the video available to apple support. My issue was immediately escalated, and my account started working again shortly after.
I received no additional messages from tech support, i had no idea the problem was resolved until i tried it again.
