My experience with new HP ENVY 17-j113el : 1200 euros spent to buy a lot of problems...

Good morning,
In April 2014 I have bought a nice, full-loaded, expensive (1200 euro) portable PC, HP ENVY 17-j113el.
Before I was using a smaller, cheaper HP G62 notebook: never have had any problem in three years, great prodct for the price.
With nice and new machine my nightmare started: wifi does not works form the first day, thanks to Ralink 3290 card. Low signals, intermitent functioning, disconnections. Requeste a replacement card to HP support, received after almost a month.
Replaced the card with the "new" Ralink 3290, and wifi signal started to be at normal level. After a short use, the signals started again to be intermittenly much lowest than the normal. Better than my original wifi card, but not as good as the signals received with my previous HP G62. Still having lowwifi signals, "floating" levels", and having the PC at 2 meters from the router shows up just a poor "-65" on inSSIDer..  And no, it is not a problem of my wifi router: never had any problems before with ANY device device.
In addition, since I have installed the new Ralink 3290 card and using wifi on this pc, another problem came out: somethimes there is a strong "click" form the audio speakers on the bottom, even if not playing any music or audio.
 That is really annoying.
Other issues: after bios upgrade to 56 (recommended by HP, executed as HP Support Assistant software directed) I have experienced sporadic computer shut off immediately ater power up.
You push the power button, the computer starts, and after 2 or 3 seconds the computer shut down.
You have to push power button again to restart.
Additional minor issues (still not espected from a 1200 euro notebook): mousepad left key, even if clicking, does not recognize the "click". You have to push strong to make it work.
And also, the keyboard: poor, poor, poor keys feeling, and on left side it bend miserably when used.
Just to note: I am a 43 years old professional, I work as electronics and IT tecnician since more than 20 years, and I am not one of those who complains for nothing.
BUT, after buying HP for years with good satisfaction, this time I am realy disappointed with the lack of quality.
Came on HP, people does not spend 1200 euros to have a PC with this kinds of problems: bring a solution!
I espect from HP to fix all this issues with my "new" (sigh!) nice, wonderful looking, full loaded and expensive PC.

Riccardo G.

Hello Rightrik,
Thanks for posting on the HP Forums.
It seems the computer is facing a number of issues, most which are likely relating to hardware. In my opinion, since the computer it still relatively new, I would contact HP phone support. Your computer would either be serviced or replaced, and the issues will be resolved.
You can utilize this website to learn how to contact HP appropriately, based on your region: Contact HP Worldwide
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

i've backup in itunes with another phone number activation , now i want active with new phone number without losing old backups , what can i do for this problem ??

If I get this right, you've ported your phone number to AT&T with the purchase of the iPhone. That is considered opening your own account under your name. Your brother's account is not ported to AT&T unless you used his SS# instead of yours. Your brother still has his account under Verizon Wireless, all you did was use your cell phone number to when you opened your own AT&T account.
If you don't want to use your Verizon Wireless phone #, my suggestion is to call AT&T customer service and explain that you want a new phone number instead of the ported Verizon number.

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your iPhone. Only if you back up your phone manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your iPhone without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPhone for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • Experience with new microsoft applications

I always seem to have problems when using  new Microsoft apps like OneDrive first time. They usually do not work for me the first time even though I follow the instructions.  I fine that most of these issues are resolved with account settings,
when they appear to be technical. Example: I couldn't get OneDrive to work. My files were not uploading at all I thought I lost my data. I like to test apps before I adopt them. I tried everything I could think of on my own and a number of solutions
I found on Microsoft.com.  In the end it was a logon issue. I had to log off my Microsoft live account log onto a local account and then immediately logout and log back in with my Microsoft live account and it worked.  Which makes no sense to me.
I glad but it took me all day to find the solution and it wasn't even technical and it was upsetting.  In the end I usually like the things I adopt but I spend so much time trying to figure out solutions that I give up and chose not to try new
technology. Or I go to other vendors who's apps are usually more robust and simple.  But I question their security while I trust Microsoft, I would like to able to try Microsoft new apps and technologies without worrying whether it's going to work as
described or is there going to be many hours of tweaking to get it to work.

I'd like to add that this has been my experience with Microsoft ever since the old DOS days prior to Windows 3.1.

  • Horrible Experience with new 17" MBP

I have had 3 Apple laptops in the past 3 years. My most recent purchase has been the most expensive, and most disappointing. Its a mid 09 17".
All day, everyday, this computer beach balls. From the simplest task of quick viewing a folder, creating a bookmark in safari, to playing a song in iTunes. It becomes increasingly disturbing when using a program such as Final Cut Pro or Motion. Ruins the experience.
So I lose intrest in trying to do things such as making videos, so I'll just watch them on the internet. Usually just browsing the net will only score me a beach ball about once an hour.
NOPE. My airport starts dropping the connection. It just shows searching in the airport menu. I have to click on my network and type in the password. My laptop drops it's connection around 5-6 times throughout a day.
I paid $2500 for a better user experience. I almost achieved more when I had my old Blackbook because it wouldn't freeze up for 30-50 seconds 20 times a day.
I have restored, reinstalled, cleaned cache, used snow leopard specific programs, reset this and that. Where do I go from here? I don't want to drive an hour and half to my closest Apple store just for them to tell me its a software issue, when this would happen on Leopard also. I dont want to drive an hour and half to a store for them to take it from me for 6-14 days. I need my computer everyday.
    What do I do?

    Hi All,
I am also having this problem on a brand new MacBook Pro (Which was given to me as an exchange after an absolutely disastrous relationship with my previous MBP!)
From day one I have been having abnormal amounts of beach ball action, sometimes so bad that it actually makes doing anything on here impossible. I took it into my local Apple store and was told that everything seemed to be fine.
A few frustrating days later I called the Apple helpline and was taken through various procedures and told to phone back if this didn't fix the problem. It didn't fix the problem!!
I then reinstalled my OSX software and for the last few months this solved the problem. One of the reasons I was in the forums was that I now cannot open anything by double clicking... Do anyone have any ideas how to fix this?!
So I reinstalled again yesterday, hoping this would fix the file problem but aside from not fixing that, the spinning beach ball of doom is now back in full force!
Don't get me wrong, I love my MBP but for something so expensive, I would really like it to be in working order and not have to send it away for weeks one end!
Any suggestions greatly appreciated and to everyone with the same problems, my deepest sympathy lol!

  • Horizontal streaks (with new HP Envy 4500)

Purchased new HP 4500 Envy (Cwhich wouldn't print black at all with catridges provided).
Bought new replacement black cartridge.  I now get black with horizontal streaks.  [Note it's rubbish for cartridge in box didn't work].
I have tried all the various test pages, realigning print heads, upping the paper quality, switching on and off, taking out and reinserting cardridges, etc and have reviewed this page in detail [ http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c03748920&lc=en&product=5304877&tmp...
I still continue to get horizontal streaks with black text where I seem to be missing about one line in every 3 or 4.
I have checked printer settings (everyday printing should be fine, but isn't)
Ink levels are fine - new.  [Mind you they were fine/full in the cartridge that came with printer too, but that didn't work at all]
Print Qual Diag report - this looks ok - no streaks to be seen.
PRint alignments - looks okish, but I get message saying alignment failed every time.  [Now used papges and pages of paper and lots of ink doing this.... No progress, and repeating yet again doesn't seem to change outcome here, so giving this up - very wasteful and doesn't solve problem]
Clean print head - most black text appears, but a few lines missing or half missing.  [Ditto re repeating this doesn't seem to help resolve]
I am now at end of step 4.  This says if my problems are solved I can stop trouble shooting.
IT DOES NOT, HOWEVER, SUGGEST WHAT TO DO IF MY PROBLEMS ARE NOT SOLVED.
When I print ordinary documents - we MS word, emails, or from web again I am missing some lines or parts of lines (where tops or bottoms of letters have been sliced off).  This is poor.
I HAVE NOW WASTED MANY HOURS, LOTS OF PAPER AND LOTS OF INK.
PROBLEM NOT RESOLVED.  PLEASE CAN YOU FIX IT?
MY HEART NOT FULL OF JOY ABOUT HAVING THIS HASSLE EVERY TIME A NEW CARTRIDGE IS FIXED INTO PRINTER.

    Hello jules878,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
Sorry to hear that you are having issues when attempting to print in black ink.  I see that you have gone and went through the one document on Fixing Ink Streak. That document may not be the one that is geared entirely to the issue at hand.
I suggest that you first make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
Having the power cable in a power bar/strip can cause issues with the display being dim or paper feed issues as well as issues with the Ink Delivery System.
Here is another document that I believe is more geared to the issue that you are experiencing.  Please click the following link for when the Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages.  Some steps will be the same but you will quickly see that the document does cover alternative measures.
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.
    Thank you for your time.
    Cheers,

  • Please share experience with new Webroot for iMac, iPad, etc.

Webroot has expanded its malware product beyond just spyware to a full-featured product for both PC and apple products. We have a 3-seat license and have installed it on our 2-year old iMac (on Lion), our original iPad (on iOS 5), and our PC. On the iMac, it scans for malware periodically, and I think it does continuous monitoring, but I have not yet figured out how to initiate an unscheduled scan.  On the iPad, it appears as two apps, one of which appears to be a browser, which I haven't used yet. If you have this new Webroot on your Apple products, please share your experiences and thoughts about it, how you use it, and whether you think it is effective. Thank you.

I have done those things. I tried the same with an older ibook and three clicks and the airport icon showed an arrow (signaling it now is a base station) no problem but not on either of the leopard machines. is there a problem with sharing using leopard?
When I set the imac to share the ethernet connection and choose by airport the red Button changes to green. the preference window says "sharing your ethernet connection" but no change at the icon on the upper right menu bar. (I've always thought it changes to an arrow over the "radar" icon) if I close the sharing window and then reopen it or turn the airport on/off the internet sharing box becomes unchecked and sharing is turned off. I can't seem to get the radar icon to change and the sharing settings to stay "set".

  • A Forum Regular's Experience with New iPad

My new iPad was delivered today.  It was hard working a regular day, when it was sitting in the box on the kitchen counter waiting for me.  So, what are my impressions?  Stunning.  It was a breeze to set it up via iCloud.  You tell it what language you want, what your iCloud ID is, your wifi encryption code and then sit back while everything migrated over seamlessly.  All I had to do was enter a few passwords on a few apps, and then everything magically appeared in place, where they should be.  All my pictures, albums, music, contacts, were put in place.  It took about 45 minutes for everything to download.
The screen resolution is nothing short of spectacular.  Reading a magazine is amazing and my pictures, which were all taken with a DSLR are stunning.
I'm not experiencing any unusual warmth, even after 5 non-stop hours of use.
I am VERY happy with how smoothly the transition went and how terrific the new iPad is.

rbry .... she told me to go for it last weekend. Now she is actually bugging me to buy the new iPad. I think that she wants my old one now! So my plan is to head out this weekend and pick one up. There is a Best buy store very close to where I live and they seem to be in plentiful supply everywhere. We checked them out last weekend at the Best Buy store and they looked spectacular to me.
I'm not a true iCloud believer just yet and I still use iTunes primarily - but I do have backups in iCloud and iTunes as well. Most of my music is ripped from CD's and I am not going to pay for iTunes Match. IMO - and I am an old man now who is set in his ways - there is now way that I need to pay Apple to store music for me when I can do it myself. I can't ever imagine being in a postiton where I think to myself - "oh my god if I cant hear "Truckin" by the Grateful Dead right now I am just going to die and I forgot to sync it to my iPad". The instant musical gratification just isn't a big need for me. I don't Photo Stream either so the cloud has no great appeal other than for using Pages - at least right now.
But enough of that .... I may not even make it until Saturday ......

  • Great experience with new Mac Mini!

I bought a 2.0Ghz Mac Mini a couple of days ago. I'm very pleased with it's performance and adding 2GB Ram doesn't hurt
I can't believe the grunt this little baby can give, it's outstanding. I thought that my old G4 1,33 was a champion, this one is so much better! I have installed VMware fusion it runs WinXP great, for my needs anyway. I'll try Bootcamp soon. Anyway, I love Leopard! There are some things getting used to like the new finder and how mounted SMB shares are presented but I'll get used to it for sure.
    Love it!
    Oops...gotta update my signature...done!

To echo the above: I've been delighted with my mini (a humble 'ole G4) since "migrating" from Windows just under three years ago.
The best compliment I can pay my mini and Apple in general is that it 'just works' as the "switcher" ads said at that time when I was making the transition.
Although Apple are frequently upgrading and enhancing the range, the great thing is that you don't really feel "left behind" with the latest change. There's a great continuity through the products and, ultimately, I feel it is enough to be a Mac user if the machine/software does what one wants.
Having said that, I daren't visit my nearest Apple Shop to look at the latest Intel minis - I'll only end up wanting one!

  • Bad experience with new ipod nano 6

    Hi...

I tried all the suggestion from apple but still with no result. Mi ipod still asking fo restore.

Put it in a baggie when you exercise with it or get a plastic plug for the dock connector. Sweat will kill it.

  • Mixed experiences with new MacBook & Questions

I just sold my iBook and bought a MacBook 1.83GHz. In generala nice machine, fast and silent. I was wondering which of the following is normal on a MacBook:
    - The mouse button is dreadful. I am now using the click-on-trackpad as a workaround, but things like double or triple click with the mouse button is a pain. I seem to have to hammer the thing to work. Working it with my thumb becomes problematic. Is this normal?
    - It gets scaldingly hot on the bottom near the back left corner, in the corner closest to the power connector. This is when running on battery. Slowing down to single-core seems to help a bit. How do I measure temperature anyway?
    Thanks,
    G

    1) The mouse is probably not normal and it should work better than you're describing. You might want to contact AppleCare regarding that one.
    2) Yes they do get rather toasty. It's quite a change from your iBook although more than likely what you're experiencing is normal. To check temperatures try using CoreDuoTemp…

  • Problem with NEW H520 when installed new power supply & graphic card. Please help!

My H520 was working perfectly and was running FAST..especially when rebooting. ( It was AWESOME!  )Then I installed a new power supply (Coolmax 400w) and a new graphic card (Sapphire Radeon HD6450) and then everything changed.  Now my computer is booting very SLOWLY and all the programs are taking a long time to load too.  I was getting a black screen for almost a full 2 minutes before the windows 8.0 screen would finally load up and then it hangs there for a few seconds and finally goes to the start screen in windows.  But BEFORE I installed this new hardware, when I would reboot, I would see the Lenovo splash screen come up for a few short seconds and then it instantly went to the windows welcome screen.  And even then I would barely have enough time to see the welcome screen before it instantly loaded into the windows start screen.  Everything would load up fast on the desktop too and we'd be good to go. It all took about 30 SECONDS.
But now? It takes MINUTES to get everything going.   After it FINALLY loads up (it takes almost 2 full minutes now!), everything hangs up.  When you first click on the desktop, it takes a few seconds for all of the icons to pop up.  Before I loaded the new hardware, everything loaded up instantly.  I didn't even see the icons load because they were already there.  But now I have to wait for them to load up before I can even see them.  And it's like that with every program and web browser I try to use now.  Everything hangs up at first and then finally loads.  The programs work but they are sluggish.
So I uninstalled the new power supply and put back in the original 280w power supply and I took out the graphic card but it did no change.  The machine is STILL running slow on everything it does and booting very slowly.
I have seen this problem mentioned elsewhere about Lenovo computers but there is never a solution.  Please help!  It took me a long time to save up for this computer and I have been babying it ever since.  I will never be able to afford a new one or pay for tech repair.  I need to fix this!    I was so thrilled with this computer before the hardware upgrade. This is devastating to me that it is working so poorly now when all I was trying to do was upgrade it a little bit.     Now it's performing horribly and it's only 6 months old.
I ran a four hour test on the hard drive and it is fine.  I ran all the system clean ups, optimizations, registry cleanups, windows disk cleaner, defragger and virus scans. Nothing is showing up as not working but there is CLEARLY a problem.  It was never this slow.   And why is it STILL acting this slow even after I uninstalled all of the new hardware that made it start acting this way and went back to the original setup?
I'm trying to run a memory test on it now but the BIOS will NOT allow me to select another drive to boot from so I can't boot from the flash drive or CD drive to run the memory test.  I have NO IDEA what to do next and I am starting to pull my hair out in frustration.
Please, is there anything that can be done to make it better again?
Any help would be HUGELY appreciated.    Thank you!
    Sincerely,
    Jennifer

I totally give up!!  I restored everything to the ORIGINAL state with drivers AND hardware and STILL everything is not working properly like it was BEFORE the upgrade.
So this has been the WORST experience with Tech support EVER!!  I have spent DAYS on the phone for HOURS with these technicians and nobody seems to know what they are doing.  They put me on hold every 10 minutes and are gone for 10 to 15 minutes and when they come back, they seem all set on a new solution but when you ask them questions about it, they have NO CLUE how to answer and then they put you on hold again.  Nothing gets solved and after HOURS on the phone, I just tell them to stop because we are getting no where but running around in circles that make no sense.    THIS A NIGHTMARE!!
So I totally gave up on being able to upgrade this machine.  To any future buyers, I STRONGLY recommend you do all upgrading BEFORE you get it home for the first time.  Make sure you have your power supply and graphic card INCLUDED before you bring it home or you're mostly likely going to have a NIGHTMARE upgrading it later.    Technical support is a HORROR STORY and expect to be WAITING for LOOOOONNNNG periods of time both ON THE PHONE and ONLINE and probably ending up with NO SOLUTION in the end.
I've VERY upset with how this turned out!!  I'm just gonna have to deal with the fact that my computer is permenantly messed up and NOBODY AT LENOVO knows how to fix it.    So I'm stuck.
I decided to send back the new power supply and the new graphic card because of this nightmare with tech support.  I put everything back to the way it was when I bought the computer and it is STILL acting up!!  I just want to revert it back to factory settings .. INCLUDING THE BIOS... but Lenovo said I have to send the WHOLE computer back to them to do that.  All I can do from home is restore from a point in the hard drive and that's not enough.  I need a TOTAL CLEAN INSTALL.  Everything needs to be wiped out and reset, not just restored to a previous restore point.  I've done this multiple times and all it does is erase all the programs and stuff I put on the computer.  The drivers and other codes are still the same.  And then bugs come up and things get all wonky.  I NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE I TRIED TO UPGRADE IT!!
I am NOT comfortable with Lenovo's "solution". I do NOT want to send my computer back to them for them to reset it with factory disks ESPECIALLY when they stated that they are NOT responsible for any damage in transport or otherwise. I have to buy extra packaging to make sure it gets there safely. They told me to use the original box and packaging, that is the only way they can be sure it will get there safe.  Who has the original stuffing SIX MONTHS LATER?!?! I don't want to be sending my computer across the country to get jostled all over the place and have that add to the slowness of the hardware because it was jostled.
Can't I reset it from home?  Can they not send ME the disks instead of me sending my whole computer to them?
I'm so incredibly frustrated with this.  I hope somebody answers quickly and that I don't have to wait DAYS to get a response again.
I absolutely LOVED my Lenovo computer!  And then I tried to upgrade it.  BIG MISTAKE!!  Now everything is totally messed up and Lenovo's customer support for technical problems is HORRID!!
Somebody please help.  This is driving me crazy with frustration and totally breaking my heart.  It took me a VERY long time to save up for this computer and it was my most loved possession.  It was a reward for a lot of hard times and now it's all broken and acting slow.  And it's only 6 months old.
Is there a solution to this very frustrating problem?
I just want it to go back to the way it was before.
And is there a very low cost KNOWN TO WORK WITH THIS MACHINE upgraded graphic card and power supply?  Is there a very specific brand and make?  If so, could you let me know what it is in case I try to upgrade it again someday?
Thank you for your time and for reading this!
Please have a FANTASTIC day today!!
    ~Jennifer~

  • My 12 days experience with Mac mini (intel)

I bought a Mac mini 2 weeks ago (core duo, 1Gbyte RAM, 100Gbyte HD).
I have expected quite Mac mini, however my one was loud, in particular in an otherwise quite room. I’m still not clear from where the noise came. My best guess it is the motor of the fan, which was running all the time.
I called apple care and was told the mini should be quite and I could exchange the Mini, because is was still within the 14 days. My Mini was exchanged without problems.
For a new start, I couldn’t use the Mini at all, because the power cable was missing; another trip to the apple store was necessary.
My ‘new’ mini was slightly quieter, but definite much louder than my previous G4 iBook. I think the noise from the fan can be a problem, but I guess this is a very subjective area.
Ten days later, the computer froze (Bluetooth keyboard/mouse) whenever I plugged in my second USB memory stick. Soon later, Bluetooth wasn’t working at all. Zapping the PRAM and disconnecting for 5 minutes didn’t help. I installed a the tiger update (10.4.6 ) and the firmware update without success. Bluetooth was dead.
I bought the mini back and asked for the refund.
Pros: Extremely fast if you have the universal binaries
Cons: Rosetta is a killer, a old G4/G3 shows a faster response, but I have only experience with MS Office
Finally, Apple Care was very helpful, and Apple Store had no problems in exchangeing the Mini and later give me the refund.
PS: Unfortunately I sold my G4 iBook already and I have to stay with my first generation white iBook

    Frank,
That really does stink.. I had a similar bad experience with the mac mini only it had nothing to do with noise problems.. I got mine out of the box, my first mac ever mind you, and it worked fine for 3 or 4 days then it just wouldn't turn on any more.. tried all the trouble shooting tips; exchanged power cords; finally had to send it to my parents to take into an apple store to get fixed because I'm in the military stationed overseas and for some odd ball reason Apple doesn't have a central place for you to send in desktops to get repaired.. that still bugs me about the service but I'll get over it I guess. Loved the computer but can't say it bolstered my confidence in the integrity / reliability of macs at all.. I purchased it in early April and I still don't have it back. Kinda wish I hadn't bought a mac at all now but I guess I'll be glad to get it back..

  • Anyone have experience with LV 2011 SP1?

Just asking whether anyone has experience with the latest LabVIEW  2011 Service Pack 1?
I haven't had any problems with 2011 (I had big problems with 2010 and building big applications but 2011 fixed that).  One figures that a service pack with no new features should be a good version to stick with for a while so I'm keen to update but.....  there seems to be a patch f1 already addressing some major issues that weren't in the 2011 version!  I found one posting on 2011 SP1 where someone has reported problems with it but it ended up being a discussion on OOP so it wasn't clear if the LabVIEW SP1 version was the problem.  Maybe not many people have moved to it yet.
Regarding the patch f1 its not clear if someone installing the runtime engine only has to install this patch as well if the developer has used it to build an app.  NI is never very clear about this.
I also had an issue installing 2011 SP1 which I hadn't seen before.  Installation stopped early on with Error 1303 - something to do with not being able to access the Program Files directory for some Error directory.  I'm logged in with Administrator rights and as mentioned haven't had any installation problems with LV for some time.  I got round it by turning off the Windows Firewall and unplugging the network cable.  I had to activate products after launching them the first time.  This made me start to wonder if this wasn't a good version tol go with and stick to the basic 2011.
    Any feedback appreciated.

Helpful feedback.  Ben's comment on the problem with LVOOP probably explains an issue I reported in this posting  when I updated a program to 2011 where I used the Harmonic Cursor XControl.   The problem was somewhere in the LVOOP code but I didn't persist with it as I don't have the experience in that area.
    crossrulz comments were very helpful.
I'm still confused regarding patches that come out and compatibility between development environment and the run-time engine, as downloaded off NI's website.  It makes sense that if you build an installer for a client from the development environment that it should contain a compatible run-time engine. But for various reasons I prefer that a user of my programs gets the run-time engine off NI's website.
I just noticed that the filename for the latest 2011 SP1 runtime engine includes "f1" in the zip file name so thats pretty clear and hopefully no more patches.
I recall with 2010 when the early patches came out, that the text with the page for the run-time engine download actually noted that the run-time engine included the patches.  That gave some confidence.
I see from the current 2010 SP1 run-time engine page that it now has f5 in the zip file name.  I remember applying patches f1 and f2 to the development environment.  I see that there is a patch f4 for development environment but not a patch f5.  Configuration control just seems a bit messy.

  • Does anyone have experience with warranty service on "white box" lens purchases?

I am considering the purchase of a 24-105 L series lens.  Amazon lists that lens in the $800+ price range for what some call a "white box" version that is apparently taken from a full frame camera kit and sold separately.  I am curious to know if anyone has had any experience with Canon warranty service on such purchases.
I can buy the lens used in my local market for under $700.  If the additional amount I would pay provides a warranty, I may consider buying the lens new in a white box to have the warranty protection in the event any adjustments are needed to the lens during the warranty period.  Some posts I have read on the internet give the impression that auto-focus adjustments are sometimes needed and the 60D I own does not have AF micro-adjustment capability so my only recourse for adjustments would be to have the lens serviced.
    Thanks.

I would call Canon to get a definitive answer.
However, If you are in the U.S., you need to make sure that the lens has has a U.S. warranty card. As long as the lens has the warranty card, I think Canon should accept it for service.
As a kit lens, it's packaged just like a non-kit lens withouth the printed box, but once you open it, the inside packaging appears to be the same.  Again, I would make sure that that "white-box" lens has not been opened and that all of the registration/warranty cards are for the U.S.---especially if the seller is an Amazon "partner."
