My iphone 4 has a broken screen and wont turn on for me to type in the password to back it up. what do i do?

my phone was spashed my water but i cleaned it up and dryed it up. the screen is off but i know it still works bc i still get txts on it and can hear it. i can also hook it up to my computer and se my info but cant back it up. computer. i cant backup the phone bc the passcode locks it from backup. what do i do to fix it or atleast back it up for my contacts

The passcode lock doesn't prevent the iPhone from being backed up and synced with the computer used for syncing the iPhone - unless the iPhone hasn't been synced with the computer since the passcode lock was set up. And you wouldn't be able to see your info on the iPhone either.
Contacts should already be on your computer - not a good idea to depend on an iPhone or any cell phone alone for such import data.
There is nothing you can do.

Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting.

After my first iPhone had broken due to the home button refused to work and a smashed up screen, I took it to apple for a replacement.
After I got my new phone it worked perfectly fine until a few months later my screen broke again, so I took it to a phone shop for repairing and they had done it dodgy.
The screen wasn't in properly and it had difficulties charging, and again the screen had broken and the charging got worse, I want to take it back to apple but will I have to pay to replace again because I've already taken it to apple?

You can forget about taking it back to Apple. Once a third-party touched it, you voided all warranty & support, as well as the right to an out of warranty replacement. They'll just hand it back to you.
Don't bother going to Apple, you'll just be wasting your time.

If you have backed up previously to iTunes on a specific computer, even if it has been a while, you may be able to still backup even if you are unable enter the passcode on your iPhone due to a damaged screen. You may find the following article helpful:
If you have previously synced your device with iTunes, you may be able to reset the passcode by restoring the device:
Connect the device to the computer with which you normally sync and open iTunes.
Note: If iTunes asks you to enter the passcode, try another computer that you have synced with. Otherwise, go to "If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer" section below.
If the device is still disabled, or if iTunes does not automatically sync your device, sync the device with iTunes.
When the backup and sync is complete, restore your device.
When iOS Setup Assistant asks to set up your device, choose "Restore from iTunes backup".
Select your device in iTunes and choose the most recent backup of your device.

Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.

If the messages are stored on the device and you can power the device up you can use the application posted at https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/770529 , the application has a screen capture option and you can use the screen as a guide to install MyBackup from Market or a number of backup apps from Market and then you can run the applications and backup data to your SD Card to restore to the replacement device.

-When it says place the iPod in recovery mode use this program instead of the buttons.

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

Had exact same problem. Rang Apple support and various apple repairers. All of them said in effect, too bad, you'll have to lose everything since your last backup. It's a work phone with very important stuff on it and the latest backup was on a computer that had a virus. Convergence of crap :/
Happened to talk to a friend who said to try replacing the battery. Did that. Problem fixed. All data saved.
To all Apple support people: rather than say 'once it's in recovery mode you lose all data' try saying 'replace your battery and see if that works first'!!!!
