My iPhone 5 has really sporadic battery percentage that jumps all over the place and every so often the phone turns off

Hi guys!
I'm having trouble with my iphone 5, the battery percentage jumps all over the place. It will be down at 14% and then I plug the charger in and it jumps to 50%, it jumps around without me plugging the charger in. Today it actually turned off twice and had the red icon to plug it in and when I plugged it in it had turned straight on and was at 27%.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Its really annoying because when I'm out I'm not really able to rely on the battery indicator being correct.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
Russell

Hi Boris,
That sounds really similar! I'm not sure what to so about it, I bought a mobile battery pack to charge my phone while I'm on the go as this seems to make the percentage instantly jump back up again. If I don't get any ideas on here ill probably take it in to an apple store and see if I get any joy there. I'll let u know the outcome if I do go to a store, maybe I can at least buy one at a reduced rate or something. I got my iphone 5 on the day of release so I'm outside warranty too :(

My phone crashed and has an icon showing a usb cable and the itunes emblem. when I connect to itunes it does not recognize my phone and treats it as just iphone. when I try to restore about 9 to 10 minutes into the restore the phone turns off and then on and then loses the connection with itunes and at the end of the download it just asks me to restore it again.

Be prepared to lose everything on your iPhone but it should be backed up in iTunes so you can restore from your backup.
    Try Recovery Mode... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

Wine, were you charging over the USB Connection or AC Power?  We've found in our organization that at times not enough power is generated over USB to recharge it in situations like this...I quote from the email of a fellow technician that i just received today...
I’ve had a couple of users up here bring their iPhones to me so dead that the phone was unresponsive, no matter what we did. One thing that many people do not realize is that the iPhone (iOS devices in general) have power management in them. The power management appears to be set up so that the device will not power on at all until the battery is at a certain minimum level. If the user will plug the device into the power adapter, not a USB port on a computer (laptops especially), and leave it for about an hour, maybe longer, the device will come back to life.
The reason I say they have to use the power adapter is because the USB port is not high enough power to bring the charge up fast enough for the battery to come back out of “hibernation”.
Each time I have had the users do the power adapter plug in, and leave it for a couple of hours, the devices have come back to life
    Hope this helps

No matter what i do, my iphone will not recognize any sim card that is put into the phone, and i have tried 3 different networks

Most likely the phone is locked to a carrier that you haven't tried yet.

  • Ato restore my iPhone it turns off on me. I try to reboot it and it does the same hing. When I click on restore on the computer, the phone turns off in he middle of the file extraction. What do I do now?

I cant seem to restore my iPhone it. I try to reboot it and it goes to a connect to iTunes screen. I connect the phone to the computer and when I click restore in iTunes, the phone turns off in he middle of the file extraction. What do I do now?

Restore as a NEW device.  Don't use backup at all.  Your backup may have corrupt data causing the issue.

  • I have the "battery guage jumps all over the place" issue, is it 3.0.1?

I have the issue with the battery guage jumping all over (I have been as high as 77% and as low as 42% in the last 15 minutes)
is there a consensus as to if his is a 3.0.1 issue or a hardware issue? The run time still seems ok, but it can be stressfull not knowing if you have 30 minutes of battery or 3 hours, when you are away from a power source. The issue has kept me from using my phone too much lately which certainly limits the usefullness of the phone.
I did not have the issue with 3.0 but also didn't have the issue with 3.0.1 for the firt 3 weeks I had it.
I have fully drained an charged the battery twice in an attempt to recalibrate it, not in anyway effective.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Kalel, I had the same problem with my black 3 GS.
I got it on the day it was launched here in germany. All the time no problems. Updated to 3.0.1 as soon as it was released. No problems for a bunch of weeks.
Then, one day the battery was completely run down over night from 56%.
After a 100% charge I had jumps in the battery status as you reported about it.
I went to a T-Mobile-Store and got a new SIM-Card. Didn´t help. Then I made a restore to new phone. And I didn´t installed the Facebook App again. As this was the only thing I changed before the problem occured; an update of the facebook-App.
Since then I didn´t had the problem. Sometimes the battery goes up for 2-3%. For example I look for new SMS, and it´s 80%. I check again ten minutes later and it´s down to 78%. Then it might be 5 minutes later back to 80%. But that happens only sometimes. Let´s say one or two times a day.
So far the battery-jump-problem seems to be solved in my case. I don´t reach the 300 hours standby as by Apple mentioned. I would be VERY glad to reach 150 hours. But I never reached this times. I don´t know. Perhaps I call the Apple Service and talk to them.

  • Appeaers a message that battery is too slow and the phone turns off

When the battery is yellow since today appears a massage saying that the battery is too slow and the cellphone turns off! Whats going on? Before, it could have the battery in red buy never turned off :s i need help please. Ah! The emails are taking hours to arrive! I have the 9300 and im too upset!

This tends to indicate some rogue app running in the background or an email stuck in the outbox constantly trying to send.
Reset the device by pressing and holding the home and power buttons until the white Apple logo appears.
Check the outbox for all email accounts configured on the device to ensure no messages are "stuck".

  • My iphone 3gs has a frozen screen; I have tried to reset the phone by holding the power button and the one at the bottom but still nothing! Help!

My phone still won't get off the frozen screen even when I try to force a reboot

Thank you Lawrence. that worked! I have another question for you as well. I just got this 6 Plus and it is already saying that I am nearing the end of my storage. My  iCloud is apparently 20gb and I have 6gb left. I'm attaching a screen shot. Any thoughts on how I can make available some more storage?
I Also wanted to get an enhanced quality Speech voice Alex, but it is saying I don't have enough Memory (I think it says memory because I can't read the message fully). Lastly, in your opinion does Grayscale really improve battery life above and beyond what can be achieved by closing out all apps etc. Thank you.

  • Restore iphone 4 to install the ios 5 but something went wrong while doing back up and whenever i connect the phone to itunes theres an error and the phone turn off after 1min

hi guys i just downloaded the ios 5 and while it was doing back up something went wrong and everything were stopped and shows me a message as an error msg and now whenever i connect my iphone 4(32g) to itunes after 1min it goes off and the battery full and the same thing happend again and again can u help me guys plz i only see connect to itunes on the screen no options even

by reset option do you mean the DFU restore? worked for me, have you tried that?
if not - hold the lock and home button until the power down bar comes up. then hold the lock button for ten seconds - next continue to hold the lock button and press the home button for ten seconds - next release the lock button and hold the home button for 10 seconds. this should be done with the phone tethered. If done right and your itunes is configured as such, the phone will reload the drivers and start up itunes, and then prompt for a restore/update.

  • I was on FaceTime on my iPhone 4S, then my screen when green and the phone turned off and on... Why?

Does anyone know why my iPhone 4S did this?

The device will shut down when the software detects potential danger to the hardware. Can either be potential or real danger. Device shuts down to protect the hardware.
Please restart the device and give it another go. If you continue to hiave this issue you may consider restoring your device back to default settings.
    Good luck.

  • Random reboots when 60% or less battery, phone turns off when fully charged

    Hello!
I need help! I have been using my new Sony Xperia Z3C for 4 days now. It came with Lollipop update.
Everything was working great when I opened it, but not for long. It started to reboot more and more frequently and anything could set it of, home button, typing a screen lock PIN, using any app or just while in stand by!! Crazy.
After that frustration I hoped it was a software issue because that I can solve. I started with PC Companion update and after that same thing. Ok, I thought the version is the problem. I went with older versions of Lollipop firmware. Again, same thing, after some time of usage phone starts to reboot uncontrolably. Fine, fine, I thought okay Lollipop is the problem, I need to go with Kit Kat. I did that and after successfull startup and app instalation, account logging and everything, guess what. REBOOT!
Then I noticed the weirdest thing, When I am charging the phone, it works like a charm and when it is almost full. When it drained passed 60% battery level it started to reboot again and this happens every time. When I charge it again it works just fine until 60% again. Other weird thing is that the phone TURNS OFF completely when it is at 100% charge.
Can I fix this at home?
    Cheers,
    Branko
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Phy,
yes I allready did the SIM card and SD card test and removed both of them but it's the same issue. Sometimes it works for hours without a problem and then it starts to reboot every few minutes. It really has no rules.
I guess considering all the similar topics I read and your suggestions it is definitly a hardware issue.
Thankfully I will get a replacement on Monday.
I will update what kind of issue it was if I get that information.
    Cheers!

  • Why does battery suddenly go to 0 and phone turn off?

I have an iPhone 5 and noticed the following. My battery is showing 30% or more; I start taking photos (with flash) and all of a sudden (within minutes) the phone turns off as if it was completely discharged. I plut it in, and within 5 minutes the battery is showing 40%.  The fast charge time and the very unexpected turn-off make me think the battery wasn't really at 0. Am I wrong - could a few flash photos drain a 30% battery to 0, and could an empty battery charge up to 40% in a few minutes (being plugged into a car charger)? Or does my battery need to be recalibrated somehow?

I found out that after it shuts off, the first time I hold the buttons, it shows a charge symbol and doesn't turn on. But if I hold the buttons again, then it does boot! Unfortunately, it then shows 4%, not 30%. I let it run down again, plugged it in the wall for 4 hours like you said. Let's see what it does now. It's just weird how it unexpectedly shuts off long before it gets to 1%.
